They will take place on Saturday October 25 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the McNally Rodeo Arena in Kernville. Hayrides will be available to the arena.

Peggy Sue Vineyard, age 87, passed away on October 12, 2014 at her home in Wofford Heights. She passed away exactly the way she scripted: peacefully surrounded by her family. Peggy was born to Lou and Betty Armstrong on December 12, 1926 in Leavenworth, Kansas. Peggy grew up in Kansas; met and married the father of her three children (Norman Alexander) divorced and moved to Oklahoma. Remarried in Oklahoma and moved to California in 1960. Peggy’s love for California never faltered. “I never want to live anywhere else,” was heard more than a few times by anyone who’d listen. Peggy was an active member of the Kern River Valley Elks #2358. She served as a Trustee and the Treasurer. She was a Lady of the Elks and very busy on their various committees. She was the Elks Volunteer of the Year in 2007-08. Peggy was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lou Kenney and a great grandchild, Devan Carri Schuster. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Gerry Owens (the love of her life); a sister, Glenna Krueger and her husband Jack, of Sanger, Texas; three children, son Mike Alexander and wife Muriel of Big Lake, Alaska; daughter Pat Terrell and wife Laurie of Wofford Heights, CA; daughter Phyllis Shafer and husband Ron of Neodesha, Kansas; four stepchildren, Paul Owens and wife Jan, Catherine LeBeau husband Larry, John Owens and Dan Owens, all of California. Three grandchildren and five great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and so many more that loved her. Some called her “Mom,” some called her “Peg” and some called her “friend,” but all will miss her each day. Funeral services and a memorial will be held at the Kern River Valley Elks Lodge, at 6708 Wofford Blvd. in Wofford Heights, California on November 16, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that your donations be directed to the Elks National Foundation. Checks payable to ENF may be mailed to the Kern River Valley Elks Lodge, 6708 Wofford Blvd., Wofford Heights, CA 93285. Death notices and obituaries with or without a picture are available for purchase in the Courier by calling 760-376-2860 during office hours weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., or can be requested through your local mortuay.

Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist The city of Lubbock, TX, recently unveiled a bronze statue of an African-American army veteran and a student at Texas Tech University Schlensker named Timothy Cole in a little city park across the street from the Texas Tech Law School and about four blocks from the scene of a crime, for which he was condemned and incarcerated. Cole was accused in 1986 of raping a white university student at knifepoint. The victim had testified that her assailant was a smoker, and although Cole was asthmatic and had never smoked, the jury found him guilty, and he was sentenced to 25 years in prison. That was 28 years ago. In the early years of his jail time, Cole had been given several opportunities to be paroled, if he’d simply confess to the crime for which he was serving time. However, he steadfastly maintained his innocence in spite of potential for his being paroled. And rightly so! For after the statute of limitations on aggravated rape (Cole’s alleged crime) had expired, another inmate, who was doing life for a series of other rapes, confessed to Cole’s crime and admitted that he, not Cole, was the assailant. DNA evidence confirmed his confession. The Texas court system had condemned the wrong man!
So, the Texas court system could just, apologize, release Cole and compensate him, right? No. For in the 14th year of his jail term, Tim Cole died of an asthma attack at the age of 38. In 2010, Governor Rick Perry, granted Texas’s first ever posthumous pardon, and the Texas state legislature is taking steps to change laws in such a way as to reduce the chances of executing similar injustices in the future. John Burnett of NPR News, commented that Cole’s “statue is a reminder that the law is fallible, but the truth must win the day.” We see another reminder of an injustice of far greater magnitude frequently. That reminder is a cross, like the one on a hilltop outside Jerusalem about 2000 years ago, where another man was totally innocent of any crimes, yet - rather than being thrown into jail for 25 years was executed in a most horrifying manner: crucifixion. Jesus was that man, the Son of God and Savior of the world. And it was His completely unjust execution, since He had done no wrong, that can be applied to our offense accounts, simply through faith in Him. That is, trusting that His gracious, loving action of suffering and dying in our place actually made the immense and total payment price for all the sins and offenses of which we are guilty. God’s law is not fallible, but the truth of God’s love, grace and mercy has definitely won the day! Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lake Isabella.

Antler, Fin & Feather Report
Fishermen, fish, schooled alike Mike Mencarini Courier Columnist As we move from the dog days of summer into the cooler days of fall, it’s time to change our fishing patterns. Yes, it’s time for Mencarini some fall crappie fishing. In the fall the lake’s water temperature is about the same at all depths and the oxygen level is a bit higher. What this means is the crappie can be schooled up at any depth at any time. So finding the hungry schools will be the hardest part of the trip. In the fall, the schools of shad are very important to the crappie as well as the bass. Both species depend on the baitfish as they need to fatten up for the winter months. So No. 1 on your bait list should be minnows. It’s a tossup for numbers two and three. I think jigs and then small minnow type artificial lures, two inches long or less. It depends on which one you feel more
confident with. Just as in the summer, the crappie feed more aggressively from late evening to the early morning hours. So don’t count out night fishing. Artificial light works well as it draws insects which draws the baitfish (shad) which attracts the crappie. Another rule-of-thumb to follow is when the water has low visibility, use small artificial lures that make noise and when the water is clear or clearer, use jigs or small spoons. If you have a two rod stamp, you might try a live minnow on one rod and artificial lure on the other. There is a short window of time that you can catch crappie from the shore as they come shallow in the evening and early morning hours to feed. That time window is now. I expect to see some of you burning the midnight oil until the weather turns cold and the crappie head to deep water. Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and avid fisherman. For questions or comments you can reach him through the Kern River Courier.

ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) Lots of choices could make it difficult to select what is best for your needs. Avoid snap judgments. Take the time to check them all out to find the one that really meets your goals. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You could once again experience pressure from others who would like to see you move in another direction. But heed your instincts to stay on your own path. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking charge of a project that seems to be about to stall or collapse altogether could be a challenge. But once everyone knows what you expect of him or her, things should go smoothly. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Avoid the pressures of the upcoming holiday period by setting a time right now to discuss how to divide up the responsibility of helping a loved one come through a difficult period. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s not too early for you to start making long-distance travel plans. The sooner you stop procrastinating and start deciding where, when and how you’re going, the better. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone you’ve known for years might disappoint you, or even make you feel you've been betrayed. But check the facts carefully before you make charges that could backfire on you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A holiday
plan might need to be revised to accommodate an unexpected complication. Come up with an alternative arrangement as soon as possible to avoid more problems down the line. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Don’t accept halfway explanations for a situation that requires full disclosure. The more you know now, the better able you will be to handle any complications that might arise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The cooperation you relied upon might not be easy to get. Maybe there’s an information gap. See if everyone understands the situation. If not, be sure to offer a full explanation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Problems caused by that recent workplace distraction should soon be easing, allowing you to resume working at a less frantic pace. That personal matter also begins to ease up. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Changing your mind about a job decision isn’t easy for the usually committed Aquarian. But once you check it out, you’ll find facts you didn’t know before. And facts don’t lie. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your unique way of sizing up a situation gives you an edge in resolving that upsetting workplace problem. Stay on your current course regardless of any attempts to distract you.

This pageant will take place on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. There are 15 contestants! Live music can be enjoyed on the newly finished gazebo in Circle Park right in downtown Kernville. Several local bands and artists will be making an appearance throughout the weekend. The pumpkin patch will be located at Frandy campground. There are over seven different types of pumpkins and gourds. The petting farm will offer a variety of farm animals for your petting and feeding pleasure. It will be located right next to the pumpkin patch. Also next to the pumpkin patch you will find along with the petting farm, haunted maze, turkey poop Bingo, Euro jumps, Amazing Bounce, Bubble Fun, Wreck a Wreck and several other vendors and food! Sweet Adeline pastrami sandwiches, Tubatulabal Indian tacos, and a variety of fall treats will be for sale. The pumpkin patch is open from open to close on each day. The haunted maze was a huge hit last year. Several folks from Bakersfield stated that the drive was worth it just to go into the haunted maze. The actors for this attraction include none other than our local high school drama club. They will take you on a frightful journey you will never forget! Contests are located throughout Frandy campground but the Halloween Costume contest will take place on the Main Stage at Frandy campground Saturday at 6 p.m. There will be free movies at Frandy Park Friday night at 8 p.m. enjoy Ghostbuster I and Saturday night at 8 p.m. see Ghostbuster II. Don't forget your chair! Several vendors will be located throughout the town of Kernville. Our local Art Association and Farmers Market will be smack in the middle of Kernville.
