Rods run on Kernville

Rhodeshow Productions is back for the 40th Anniversary Kick Back In Kernville River Run as seen in this photo from last year’s rod run. This year a vintage trailer show and automotive swap meet have been added to the mix at the Kernville Airport.
Columbus Day controversy timeanddate.com Courier Information Columbus Day, which is on this Monday, remembers C h r i s t o p h e r Columbus' arrival to the Americas on October 12, 1492. The holiday today remains controversial because the European settlement in the Americas led to the demise of the history and culture of the indigenous peoples. Many states now celebrate Native A m e r i c a n s ' Day/Indigenous People's Day instead of Columbus Day. Christopher Columbus is often portrayed as the first European to sail to the Americas. He is sometimes portrayed as the discoverer of the New World. However, this is controversial on many counts. There is evidence that the first Europeans to sail across the Atlantic were Viking explorers from Scandinavia. In addition, the land was already populated by indigenous peoples, who appear to have 'discovered the Americas thousands of years before. Columbus Day originated as a celebration of ItalianAmerican heritage and was first held in San Francisco in 1869. The first statewide celebration was held in Colorado in 1907. In 1937, Columbus Day become a holiday across the United States. Since 1971, it has been celebrated on the second Monday in October.

Good or Not? Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist Part I: When God created the universe, the Bible says it was all "good" (Genesis 1:31). If we look carefully at God's creation, we might say that what Schlensker "good" meant was that the whole system God created was such that it brought forth, supported and enriched life. That, as far as God was concerned, is what "good" meant. God's entire creation blessed supported and enriched mankind. Man and woman blessed, supported and enriched each other. The system brought forth, supported and enriched life. The whole created order was united to-and at peace with-God. "Behold, it was very good." Before too long, though, things became not good! In fact, things became not good in the worst possible way! The beauty, the integrity, and the peace of God's pristine creation were shattered, when the people, for whom God had created the cosmos in the first place, succumbed to the temptation of Satan and rebelled against God. (Genesis 3:1-8) They spurned His company, thumbed their noses at His goodness and blatantly disobeyed Him. They figuratively spat in His face. So now they were alienated from their Creator. They could no longer enjoy walking and talking with Him in the cool of the evening in the Garden of Eden. The people, the pin-
nacle of His creation, were alienated from God; they were alone, lonely and miserable. And God was grieved. After all, God, Who is identified with "love" (1 John 4:8), needs-if we might be so bold as to ascribe to the almighty Creator of the Universe a need-God needs someone to love! We might infer, then, that that is the reason God created people at all. But the people, whom He had created for relationship with Himself, had become separated by sin. This new situation was described by one of my clever college buddies, who poetically penned "2 2 2 B 1" (too two, to be one). That's how it was after Adam and Eve's rebellion in the Garden. At that point this almighty loving Creator God showed another of His characteristics, His graciousness. And He demonstrated His desire for reunification with His estranged creatures. God did not wait for His people to return to Him on their own. In fact, we are told in the Bible that at this point they were not even able to do that. Instead, God came looking for them as they were hiding in shame (Genesis 3:9-15) and He made them a promise, by condemning Satan in their presence and hearing, that He would remedy this alienation problem they had created through their disobedience. God to the rescue … lovingly and graciously! Stay tuned … more to come next week. Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella.

Greedy genetic-tinkerers Sam Struckhoff Courier Contributor
PICKS OF THE WEEK “Jurassic World” (PG-13) Boldly defying the lessons of the past, somebody decides to build a theme park with dinosaurs surrounding poorly protected humans. Chris Pratt stars as Owen Grady, a velociraptor trainer who has a shaky alliance with a few dino-buddies. He's opposite Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays an uptight park director who doesn't take off her heels even when being chased by dinosaurs. The greedy genetic-tinkerers who run the park have crafted the biggest dino-attraction yet: the Indominus, a mutant hybrid monster made pointlessly deadly and intelligent. The visual effects and overall scope of the action sequences go beyond what was done in the original, but even with upgraded tech and bigger teeth, this Jurassic thriller isn't as thrilling. Characters are so one-sided that even Pratt's immutable charm gets a little muted. “Testament of Youth” (PG-13) Adapted from the bestselling memoir, this drama tells the story of a young woman finding herself and her whole world changed through World War I. Vera Brittain (Alicia Vikander) was an intellectual and rebellious student at Oxford, part of a growing feminist movement, and she'd fallen for her brother's friend Roland (Kit Harrington from "Game of Thrones"). When the fighting breaks out, Vera becomes a nurse, while many of her
Bryce Dallas Howard in "Jurassic World"
friends and loved ones become memories. The film is visually stunning, especially in the jarring contrast between the English countryside and the bleary chaos of trench warfare. Vera is a fine and fascinating character, and her transformation is handled expertly by Vikander's performance. "Z for Zachariah" (R) -- Nestled in a Southern valley, Ann (Margot Robbie) and her farm animals are safe from the killer radioactivity that took out (almost) every other living thing on Earth. One day, a scientist named Loomis (Chiwetel Ejiofor) stumbles into her idyllic sanctuary. As the Last Man and Woman on Earth, Loomis and Ann make good-faith efforts to get along, understand each other and try to grow some romance in the postapocalypse. Just when things seem to click, in comes Caleb (Chris Pine), a strapping miner who has more in common with Ann than Loomis ever could. The tension in the triangle, and the ideas that the characters represent, make it a slow-burning but effective post-apocalyptic drama. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Health Insurance Matters
Junk Mail Harry P. Thal Courier Columnist I expect and suspect that the post office clerks will be exceptionally busy, especially with those people with the small sized P O boxes. If you are on Medicare, Thal chances are you will begin receiving piles and piles of mail. Be careful. Due the large quantity of mail, many people will just dump the brochures, booklets and catalogs immediately in the trash without even opening it. I understand the frustration of receiving this unwanted intrusion in your life, but care must be taken. Among this "junk" is your 2016 "Annual Notice of Change" and 2016 "Evidence of Coverage". These documents are very important. It tells you the benefits for your current Medicare HMO plan or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan for the coming year. There will be changes; some subtle, others blatant. It is your job to look through the material and recognize the changes. With these two publications, which Federal law requires your insurance plan to mail before September 30, will often have other material such as a multi-language insert, a formulary (list of drugs your plan will be covering in 2016) and a list of pharmacies (or how to get the pharmacy directory). I strongly encourage everybody on Medicare who has a prescription plan through either their HMO or a selfstanding plan, to check carefully.
Your company may have doubled or even tripled the co-pay cost at the pharmacy next year! Another plan may have a much lower cost. Therefore, the other material that you discarded at the post office may have contained an ad for the plan that would cover you more affordably. Legally, until October 1 you should not be receiving anything but the aforementioned. On October 1 plans may start promoting their plans, with enrollment not beginning until October 15. Then chaos will be the "word of the day" until the Annual Enrollment Period ends December 7. And, unlike ObamaCare, this actually does end as scheduled. For those people who don't want to sift through all the paperwork there is a simple solution. Seek professional help! My office does this for free! And, as we do so many, I don't need to read the instructions a million times. I have read it and know what each plan does and doesn't do. How can I do this for free you might ask? Truth be told, I don't. It is free to you, but the insurance plans pay me. It is the same no matter on what plan you select, so there is no incentive for me to pick one plan over another. Now granted, some plans don't use insurance agents, and don't pay a commission. I help you anyway, as in a year or two, chances are you will need a plan that does pays me. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker in California (0621106) Thal is on the National Association of Health Underwriters Medicare Advisory Board. He may be reached at 760-376-2100, harrythal@aol.com or harrythal. com.

Help with feral cats wanted Friends of the KC Animal Shelters Courier Release The Friends of the Kern County Animal Shelters Foundation is beginning a comprehensive program to stop the growth of feral cat colonies in the Kern River Valley. This is an overwhelming task and they need help from the entire community. They have started a four phase, six-month program with the goal of making a difference in the numbers of cat litters next spring. ■ In phase one, during September and October, they will identify and document the current feral colonies and plan to promote public participation through newspapers, Facebook and flyers and seek groups and agencies to help with the spay and neuter process. They will also do some fundraising and grant requesting during this phase to pay for traps and transportation expenses.
■ In phase two, November and December, they plan to recruit and train volunteers from fraternal organizations, social groups, from mobile home parks and valley communities. ■ In phase three, December through February, the teams will begin to trap, neuter and release feral cats back to their owners or home environments. ■ In phase four, in March, they will evaluate and make adjustments to more fully reach their goals. Many details are not yet confirmed, but the Foundation is asking the public to contact them as soon as possible if you have one or more feral cats in your neighborhood and if you belong to a group/small community that might be able to help with this much needed program. Contact the Foundation by email at krvferals@yahoo.com, the preferred way, or by calling 760-417-2000 and leaving a call back number.

Since 1998, more than 600 individuals from organizations throughout Kern County have graduated from the program that serves to achieve three primary goals: Educate participants to increase understanding of public issues and human relationships; mobilize participants to learn to lead effectively in areas of community health and well being; and help participants network with other citizen action groups with common interests and issues. The program includes 56 hours of instruction time in nine subject areas. Classes are held one Friday per month, starting in January 2016. Each class is taught by trainers with expertise in the areas of public speaking, time management, effective community meeting facilitation, strategic planning, conflict resolution, community mobilization, resource development, media/marketing and legislative advocacy. The participation fee is $100 once accepted into the program. Class scholarships are available for those with a demonstrated financial hardship. Applications can be downloaded online at kcnc.org. ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) Some flashes of Aries ire might erupt as you confront an unusually bewildering situation. But you should be able to keep your temper under control as you work through it. TAURUS (Apr. 20 to May 20) That marriage 'twixt the arts and practicality that Taureans excel at once again highlights your enjoyment of much of the week. However, you need to watch any sudden urge to splurge. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Even with all the plusses apparently outweighing the minuses, you still might want to defer an important decision to make sure you have all the facts you need. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) One or two problems might threaten to derail otherwise smoothly running situations at work or at home. But a few well-placed words should help get things back on track quickly. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) This could be a good time for all you Leos and Leonas in the spotlight to open your generous Lion's hearts and share the glory with those who helped you accomplish so much along the way. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) You might want to get advice from someone who's been there and knows these situations better than you do, before investing time or money (or both) in a questionable
matter. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Be careful how you handle a workplace matter that seems out of place in the schedule you've prepared. Before you act, one way or another, find out who set it up and why. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Your entertainment aspect is strong this week. Besides providing a wonderful break from everyday obligations, sharing fun times brings you closer to those you care for. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Having a weekend fun fest? Your friend or relative who's down in the emotional dumps could perk up if you find a way to include him or her in your plans. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) If you're in one of those "the Goat knows best" periods, you might want to ease up and try listening to what others have to say. You could learn something. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the opening bid may be less than the total debt. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. A Rosie outlook - Many Rosie the Riveters and Wendy the Welders from the Kern Valley attended lunch honoring them and raising support for two SAL students to escort on the Honor Flight.
Luncheon honors service Michael Batelaan Courier Extra Faith Community Church hosted a lunch last Sunday to honor Kern Valley's Rosie the Riveters and Wendy Welders from WWII. Almost 100 people attended. The waiters and waitresses for the event were the Kern Valley SAL students. The lunch was a fundraiser so that two of the SAL students, Echo Griffin, 16 and Sharri Cazares, 17 could serve as escorts on this week's Honor Flight, the 19th out of Kern County. The flight left on Wednesday October 7 from Meadows Field to Washington DC. The veterans on Honor Flight fly free, but the escorts must pay their own way. Every veteran has an escort so there is always someone to make sure their needs are met. Also in attendance at the lunch were Mick Gleason, First District Supervisor, and Dick Taylor, Director of Kern County Veterans Services. They took time during the lunch to honor Gary and Karen Zuber, the Kern Valley coordinators for Honor Flight for their extreme dedication to the veterans of the Kern Valley. "Team Zuber" were presented with a plaque commemorating the time and effort they have put into the Honor Flight
Hwy 178, Continued from page 1 and service groups and have educational pieces for use at the schools. They already have a movie trailer that runs at the Reel Cinema. "Education can do two things: we can drive more safely and old farts can still learn," said Ernie Anderson. Daures Stephens who spearheaded getting the court returned to KRV, noted that one is 250 times more likely to be involved in an accident in that section of the highway according to state website statistics. At 60 mph you are traveling 88 feet per second, and you cannot usually see 88 feet ahead, especially around corners. Since 2008, that section of the canyon has had 370 reported accidents, 10 fatal, 15 injuries, 12 involving large trucks. 4200 to 4500 cars per day travel this section. Reported accidents were
program. Gary Zuber expressed his wish that all veterans get to have the Honor Flight experience, said, "Karen and I would like to thank all of the people of the Kern River Valley for their help and support every time they were asked to step up and help with Honor Flight in one way or another." In honoring the ladies at the luncheon, Gleason noted, that the women known as Rosie the Riveter or Wendy the Welder, "have sacrificed the best parts of their lives to support the efforts of the servicemen of World War II, joining in the fight against the evil that threatened the world at that time." The Sweet Adelines serenaded the crowd with a medley of military service anthems and other patriotic songs. The lunch took place in the church's gymnasium, site of last weekend's Peddler's Faire, so attendees got a chance to shop for any great bargains left. Faire organizer Jeannette Rogers Erickson thanked everyone for attending the luncheon and thanked the vendors and those who participated in the Faire. She concluded the lunch with a special thank you to SAL and to Deputy Joe Garcia, who leads the group.
twice the average. The group suggested maybe traffic signs similar to the drowning signs would help. Signs that s t a t e h o w many lives were lost in this section of the highway. They also talked about digital signs at each end of the canyon with safety messages, rumble strips on the outside edges and along the center line of the highway so people would recognize when they are too close to the edge or about to cross the double yellow line. Section 21656 regarding slow traffic and turnouts was discussed. This regulation states, "On a two-lane highway where passing is unsafe because of traffic in the opposite direction or other conditions, a slowmoving vehicle, including a passenger vehicle, behind which five or more vehicles are formed in line, shall turn off the roadway at the nearest place designated as a turnout by signs erected by the
authority having jurisdiction over the highway, or wherever sufficient area for a safe turnout exists, in order to permit the vehicles following to proceed. As used in this section a slow-moving vehicle is one which is proceeding at a rate of speed less than the normal flow of traffic at the particular time and place." With highway improvement and freeway extension work estimated to not even begin until 2035, the representative from Caltrans said "we have to work with what we have got." He indicated they like working with these types of groups. Nicolas Esquivel Caltrans engineer asked for about 6 months time to look at possible changes that might be made. Actions related to what may seem like good intentions could result in negative results if not thoroughly examined before any action is taken. Caltrans examines if they are reasonable, practical, and enforceable. Everyone needs to ask themselves: are you a part of the problem?
