Down trees force temporary closure of trail Forest Service plans to deal with hazard trees at Trail of 100 Giants Denise Alonzo, USFS Courier Update After identifying numerous dead trees in the Trail of 100 Giants, Forest officials were forced to close the trail last month to protect the public. This popular interpretive trail is located in the Western Divide Ranger District, Giant Sequoia National Monument, in the Sequoia National Forest. A hazard tree survey identified 117 dead or dying trees at risk of falling onto

the trail. No giant sequoias were identified as hazard trees. Species were predominantly white fir, sugar pine, ponderosa pine, and incense cedar. Many of the dead trees are large, averaging 30 inches in diameter and could seriously injure visitors, damage the trail infrastructure or even damage the giant sequoias should they fall. "The plan to alleviate the hazard, so the trail can be reopened, is to fall the trees using chainsaws," stated Eric LaPrice, District Ranger. "Once the hazard trees are on the ground, they will be utilized in a variety of ways. Some of the trees will be left on the ground to provide habitat. Some trees will be chipped and spread on the ground

as cover to protect the shallow root systems of the giant sequoias. Some will be cut up, moved to an area, and made available as firewood; and some will be piled and burned as part of the Districts prescribed burn program. I want to assure the public that no giant sequoia trees would be cut." Work may begin later this fall, with hopes of reopening the Trail before Memorial Day weekend. We invite the public to provide any comments or concerns to us regarding these efforts. Comments would be most useful if received before November 30, 2015. Please send written comments to Trail of 100 Giants Project, 32588 Hwy 190, Springville, CA 93265 or by email to elaprice@fs.fed.us.

Odd Day Friday 11.13.15 Odd Day is today Friday, 11/13/15. Three consecutive odd numbers make up the date only six times in a century. 11/13/15 marks the end of this parade of Odd Days which began with 1/3/5. The previous stretch of dates like this started with 1/3/1905 13 months after the Wright Brothers' flight. Things to do on Odd Day: It's a great day to do your odds 'n ends, give a friend a high-five, root for the odds-onfavorite, read the Wizard of Odds, watch the Odd Couple, say aaaahd in the doctor's office, look for sea odders, find that missing odd sock, and beat the odds. Odd Days are the unsung numerical peace-keepers - if it wasn't for odd numbers, all the even numbers would bump into each other! An Odd Ode: As Odd as it is, the 13th of November brings a glorious day we will always remember, to enjoy them this won't happen again for 90 long years. Today, November 13, 2015 is also a Friday, ushering in Act III of this year's epic Friday the 13th trilogy. We had a Friday the 13th in February and March. To cap things off, we have a Friday the 13th in November, exactly 39 weeks (3 x 13 weeks) after Friday, February 13, 2015. What's more, last year's lone Friday the 13th on June 13, 2014, occurred exactly 39 weeks (3 x 13 weeks) before the Friday the 13th in March 2015. Also, next year's lone Friday the 13th on May 13, 2016, will happen exactly 26 weeks (2 x 13 weeks) after the Friday the 13th in November 2015. To learn more about why some people fear this day and about 2015's three Friday the 13ths see earthsky.org. Scary coincidence or super unlucky? Neither. It's just a quirk of our

views

In the interest of public safety, the Forest Service has closed the Trail of 100 Giants This closure is in effect and portions of the trail may be opened once they are determined to be safe. The annual closure of the Western Divide Highway, by Tulare County due to weather may keep the trail closed until spring. While the trail is temporarily closed, the Forest Service encourages the public weather permitting to visit the lesser known areas within the Monument.

Wednesday was Veterans Day, a celebration marking the appreciation of our Veterans and their service to our country. As I watched several programs on Middleworth Veteran history I suddenly realized, I'm a Veteran and they are appreciating me! It was kind of a warm and fuzzy feeling and it got me to thinking of what my contribution was to the service of my country. It all came about while I was attending college that I decided to join the Navy. Training was in San Diego and it was then I realized that I had made a major change in my life. For the next four years I would be living a big adventure. After training in San Diego I reported aboard the Destroyer Escort Edmonds DE-406 which was stationed in Hawaii. Shortly after reporting aboard we left port for Japan and a special mission to the Jima Islands. We anchored off the island of Iwo Jima where Mt. Surabachi rose out of the ocean. Everyone knows the story of one of the most intense and costly battles of World War II. Maybe I'm sensitive but I could almost feel the ghostly presence of the thousands that died defending and capturing that hill. From there we stopped at several of the Jima Islands where we sent out shore parties to assure ourselves that there were no Japanese living on the islands. I was on one of

the shore parties as we looked to see if any of the islands were inhabited, and they weren't. I understand now that those islands are populated by many of the natives of that area. We also stopped at the island of Ulithi where we anchored in the center of that u shaped atoll. We had a message to give to the Chief of the native population which we delivered. I remember that while we waited we traded cigarettes to the natives for huge stalks of bananas, one of which we hung in the combat information center directly over the plan position indicator, which was part of our ships navigation system. As we steamed out of port a huge banana spider about 5" in diameter dropped out of the stalk and scared the beedickins out of all of us! We continued on to Japan where as part of the hundred year celebration of the famous Admiral Perry Expedition we opened our ship for visitors. We thought it really weird that just a few short years ago we were in mortal combat with many of the visitors who joined us that day. After our Japan tour we patrolled many of the Micronesian Islands. It was later that the Edmonds was deployed to assist the Naval Contingent as they prepared for the atomic bomb test at Bikini Island. I left the Edmonds at this time as my transfer came through to the submarine school in New London, Connecticut. I was then transferred to the submarine Rasher SSR-269. But that's another story for another time.

Shepherd of the Hills deadicates oak tree in preparation for 50th celebration Aaron Pierce, Courier Faith On Sunday, November 8, the members of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lake Isabella, California, dedicated an oak tree sapling which was planted at their facility. The dedication of this tree is in preparation for their 50th anniversary celebration in 2019. The dedication of the oak tree took place on the day of the congregation's 46th anniversary. Originally, the charter members of the congregation first gathered under an oak tree in the town on Bodfish to worship and gather for the first time. About a year later, on November 8, 1969, the charter of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church of the Kern River Valley was created. After the oak tree, the church initially met in various other churches, including Kernville United Methodist, for the first 3 years of its history. It then relocated to its first location in Lake Isabella, on Golden Spur. In 1992, the congregation relocated to its current location, on the hill behind the Isabella Motel, right next to highway 178, where it greets residents and visitors to the Kern River Valley. The church is planning many activities over the next 3 plus years leading up to their 50th anniversary in 2019. The dedication marks the kick-off event for the celebration.

Family melodrama mixed Sam Struckhoff Meryl Streep in "Ricki and the Flash"

Courier Contributor

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Ricki and the Flash” (PG-13) Meryl Streep stars as a woman who left her family to chase rock 'n' roll dreams, and now has to come back down to earth to reconcile with her children and the life she could have had. Ricki (Streep) never touched stardom, but she's in a rockin' bar-band with a strapping guitarist (Rick Springfield). She returns to the Midwest when her ex-husband (Kevin Kline) summons her to support their adult daughter (Mamie Gummer, Streep's real-life daughter) in recovering from a disastrous divorce. The family melodrama is mixed in with stirring musical performances where Streep belts classic rock covers with serious energy. “American Ultra” (R) - Mike (Jesse Eisenberg) is a scrawny pothead grocery-store clerk who is unbelievably deadly when he thinks his life is in danger. See, Mike doesn't remember it, but he's the product of a secret program that trained ultradeadly, ultra-brainwashed sleeper agents and placed them unsuspecting parts of the U.S. An ambitious functionary in the CIA (Topher Grace) decides to clean up what's left of the program by sending assassins against the unsuspecting Mike and his girlfriend, Phoebe (Kristen Stewart). Eisenberg is the last guy you'd cast as an action star, and that's why he does so well -- he goes from shirking schlub to killer commando in an

instant, and he's just as surprised as you. Stewart also plays an important role in the movie's likability, since she and Eisenberg share a facile chemistry and engaging rhythm. “A Christmas Horror Story” (NR) - Despite the title, it's really a handful of Christmas horror stories, strung together by a framing story with a drunk William Shatner. One bit has teens poking around a creepy school basement on the anniversary of a double-homicide -- it goes how you'd expect. Then there's the family who enters the woods to (illegally) chop down their own Christmas tree, only to find that something ... strange has happened to their son. Another naughty family gets a visit from the Krampus, a nightmarish anti-Santa from Germanic folklore. Then there's the all-out Christmas carnage story where Santa throws down against a horde of profane zombie-elves. It's not the most memorable holiday-horror flick of terrifying treats. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Did someone say biscuits? Bitsy’s Liver Biscuits 1 lb. Beef liver 1 box corn-muffin mix 2 teaspoons garlic salt Liquefy liver in food processor blender. Mix the muffin mix and spice in and knead until it's doughy. Spread all the dough unto a nonstick cookie sheet. Bake at 350 18-20 minutes. Cut into shapes and refrigerate. Use in two weeks or freeze. Bitsy Bitsy’s Cheese and Bacon Biscuits 3/4 cup wheat flour 1/2 tsp. Baking soda 1 stick soft butter or margarine 2/3 cup brown sugar 1 egg 1.5 tsp. Vanilla 1.5 cups uncooked oatmeal 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 2/3 cup wheat germ crumbled (or can substitute oatmeal) 1/2 lb. Bacon, cooked crisp Starting with the flour, butter, and sugar mix all the ingredients together adding one at a time and you have a good firm dough. Then drop the dough in clumps with a spoon onto an un-greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 F for 15 minutes then turn off the heat and let the biscuits cool for several hours to dry and harden them. Best if stored for a few days at room temperature before using and then refrigerate.

Slowly add water until the mixture is a thick and doughy. Lightly flour a cooking surface. Roll the dough to create a 1/4 inch thick sheet. Use a cookie cutter to create shapes. Place cookies onto a baking sheet and bake for 40 minutes. Allow to cool before feeding. Health Insurance Matters

Three weeks till trouble Harry P. Thal Courier Columnist Three weeks remain of the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period. Seven weeks remain of the Affordable Care Act Open Thal Enrollment Period. My biggest concern is those Medicare beneficiaries who have a plan which contains prescription drugs. This could be a stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare HMO with a prescription benefit built in. Here is the problem. The cost of medications has risen faster than inflation. Some have doubled or tripled. I read of one drug that had a 5000 percent increase, and have seen many close to it. With the retail prices soaring, Congress is now launching investigations, but it will be too little, too late for the 2016 Medicare year. I am hearing the same thing from many seniors. "I am happy with my current plan, so there is no need to change it." They will be happy until January when the bomb hits at the pharmacy counter! Keep in mind, any plan changes must be made before the drop dead deadline of December 7. And, I am not planning on helping new people the last week of the AEP. What I am willing to do is to accommodate Kern Valley seniors to determine if they will be victims; or give them the peace of mind that they will be okay for the New Year. All you need to do is have your prescription bottles available and call the office. Staff will

take down some vital information and list of your medications. We will then call you back with a recommendation. I shall go into the 2016 with a clear conscious that "I tried." Just advise my staff you would like a prescription review as seen in the Courier. On the same theme, there is the GemCare issue. GemCare sold their Medicare HMO business to Blue Shield, who has decided not to cover the Kern Valley in 2016. I have helped close to 100 beneficiaries change plans. Most have been able to keep all or most of their doctors. There are other Medical Groups besides GemCare, and many of the area physicians belong to one or more of these groups. It is sometimes more difficult to include all the Bakersfield specialists, but I have been extremely successful in not disturbing most doctor/patient relationships. As GemCare has sent out letters to those affected by the change, that letter becomes a "Get Out of Jail FREE" card. You are not restricted by the December 7th cut off for the AEP. You can still get a January 1st effective date even if you enroll later in December. There are several licensed insurance agents in the area who sell health insurance along with their property and casualty lines. As there is never a fee to you, take advantage of their services. Regrettably, there is little or no wiggle room after December 7. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker in California (0621106) Thal is on the National Association of Health Underwriters Medicare Advisory Board. He may be reached at 760-376-2100, harrythal@aol.com or harrythal. com.

Talking About Real Estate

Sellers in a stable market Matt Freeman Courier Columnist A market is defined as stable when there is a balance between inventory and demand, which is what we are seeing Freeman for the most part here in the Kern River Valley. What is the best way for a seller to get their property noticed in this market? Here are three of the biggest reasons properties either sell or do not sell when they are listed. ■ Price: This is the biggest factor, especially when the market is stable. A price for a piece of property must not be based on what anyone else says but rather on what has sold in the area recently. A seller must think like a bank and an appraiser, and be realistic. A property is not worth more because of personal reasons it is worth what it is or is not based on market conditions. Appraised value and ultimately what a home is worth is what a buyer is willing to pay for it. Sellers make sure that you are priced accordingly. Unless your home has something absolutely exceptional and unique about it, a large pool or maybe a huge 4 car garage for example that sets it apart, the comparable sales are how to value the property. There are exceptions to the rule of course, but recently sold comparable sales that are similar to the listing are what lenders and appraisers use really do matter.

■ Location: The old real estate motto: location, location, location is true. The location of a property does play into what it is worth. A 1,000 sq foot house in Kernville is worth more than in Weldon, or Bodfish typically. A large piece of land is worth more in Squirrel Valley than in Lake Isabella or Onyx. When trying to sell, make sure and get these two factors properly balanced and your listing will be able to compete with the bank owned foreclosures, short sales, probates, and everything else on the market. You will actually make more if you do this instead of price too high. ■ Patience: A seller in this market has to have patience. I am sure glad I have a high self-esteem because I have been fired more in the last 10 years than ever before in my life! Good news about that, I got hired more than I got fired! A good agent is trying everything in their power that they know works and some stuff they don't know works to try and sell your house. Certain market segments sell faster than others, cheaper homes typically sell faster than higher priced homes no matter how good of a deal they are. Find an agent that you trust and you know is doing their very best for you and stick with them. Make sure they give you marketing updates and keep in contact on a regular basis. Make your agent work for you but also realize that your agent is working in your best interest. Matt Freeman is a realtor with Freeman’s Lakeside Realty 760-379-5915 or 760-223-0880. ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) This year, instead of jumping into the whole holiday prep scene, move in a little at a time. You'll appreciate the sense of control you're more likely to enjoy. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The separation between the Bovine's head and heart is never as far apart as it seems. Both senses work best when they come out of logic and honesty. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The best way to keep those pre-holiday pressures under control is to just say no to taking on new tasks while you're still trying to work with a heap of others. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) News means a change might be on its way, but what does it hold? Don't just ask questions; make sure you get answers you can trust. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Old friends and new have one thing in common: Both your longtime and newly minted pals have much wisdom to impart. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With time running out, this is a good time for you to show 'em all what those Virgo super-organizational skills can do.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Librans and holidays are made for each other, especially if children and animals are going to be part of your joyous season. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Time is getting too short to allow a spat to taint the holiday season. Restart your relationship and reschedule holiday fun times. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Seeking advice is laudable. You might learn far more than you thought you could. Stay with it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Continuing to assess changes works toward your getting your new project up and ready. Trusted colleagues remain ready to help. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) That new situation needs a lot of attention, but it's worth it. This is a very good time for you to involve the arts in what you do. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It might be a good idea to slow your hectic holiday pace so that you don't rush past what -or who -- you're hoping to rush toward. BORN THIS WEEK: Others pick up on your confidence in yourself, which inspires them to believe in you and your special gifts.

All right, title and interest conveyed to and now held by the Trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described as: More fully described in said Deed of Trust. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder's sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the opening bid may be less than the total debt. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
