Happy Thanksgiving
Most stories of Thanksgiving history start with the harvest celebration of the pilgrims and the Native Americans that took place in the autumn of 1621. Although they did have a three-day feast in celebration of a good harvest, and the local natives did participate, this "first thanksgiving" was not a holiday, simply a gathering. There is little evidence that this feast of thanks led directly to our modern Thanksgiving Day holiday. The Pilgrims set ground at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. Their first winter was devastating. At the beginning of the following fall, they had lost 46 of the original 102 who sailed on the Mayflower. But the harvest of 1621 was a bountiful one. And the remaining colonists decided to celebrate with a feast; including 91 natives who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. The feast was more of a traditional English harvest festival than a true "thanksgiving." It lasted three days. It is not certain that wild turkey was part of their feast. However, it is certain that they had venison. The term "turkey" was used by the Pilgrims to mean any sort of wild fowl. The supply of flour had been long diminished, so there was no bread, pies or pastries. But they did eat boiled pumpkin, and they produced a type of fried bread from corn. There was also no milk, cider, potatoes, or butter. But it did include fish, berries, plums, watercress, lobster, dried fruit, and clams. Many years passed before the event was repeated.

As we get close to Thanksgiving I have noticed that many of us think back to earlier days and the good times that have happened in years past. In particular most of us think of the holiMiddleworth day dinners, where family and friends sat around the dinner table eating and enjoying a big juicy turkey with all the trimmings. Not once have any of us given a thought as to what the turkey felt about those same dinners. I came across a poem purportedly written by a turkey which expressed his feelings. He called this poem: Christmas Is Coming but First there's November When I was a young turkey, new to the coop My big brother Mike, took me out to the stoop, Sitting me down, he spoke very slow And told me 'Twas something I needed to know'. His look and his tone, I will always remember When he told me the horrors of ... Black November! Sometime about August. Now listen to me you'll get extra meals, instead of just three! And so you'll be thick, where once you were thin, And you'll grow a red, rubbery thing 'neath your chin. And then one morning, when you're warm in your bed In bursts the farmer's wife, and hacks

off your head! Then she'll pluck out your feathers, so you're bald and you're pink And she'll scoop out your insides, and leave you in the sink. And then comes the worse part, he said I'm not bluffing, She'll open you up and pack you with stuffing. Well the rest of his words were too grim to repeat I sat on the stoop, like a winged piece of meat! And vowed to myself to avoid being cooked, I'd have to lay low and remain overlooked. I began a new diet, of nuts and granola, High roughage salads, juice and diet cola. As turkeys ate pastries, chocolates and crepes, I stayed in my room and watched Jane Fonda tapes! I maintained my weight of two pounds and a half, And tried not to notice when the bigger birds laughed. But 'twas I who was laughing, under my breath, As they chomped and they chewed ever closer to death!! And sure enough..when Black November rolled around, I was the last turkey left in the turkey compound. So now I'm a pet, in the farmers wife's lap, I haven't a worry, so I eat and I nap. She held me today, while sewing and humming, And smiled at me saying...."Christmas is coming".

A Thanksgiving Prayer O
" we give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; forhis steadfast love endures forever!" Psalm 106 "Oh, Heavenly Father, we give you thanks for your food, and ask that you fill the cups of those who are hungry." "We thank you Lord for your many blessings. May we always remember that they come from you." "We thank you for our health, and ask for healing of those that are sick." "We thank you for our family and friends, and ask that you be with those who are alone." "We thank you for our freedom, and remember those who are enslaved." "We thank you Lord for the giving of your son, our salvation, and that your spirit will descend upon those who do not believe." "We thank you Lord that we can worship you, and pray for those who feel they can not." "May these remembrances stir us to service." "That your gifts and blessings to us, may be used for you, and shared with others." "Lord, may we rejoice aways, constantly, and give thanks in all circumstances..." Thessalonians 5:16-18 "We pray this prayer in Jesus’ name, Amen" This prayer was originally published by columnist Dear Abby each Thanksgiving and has become a family tradition that is read at our Thanksgiving table.

Message of faith
Thanksgiving Proclamation Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist This week, I yield my space to Abraham Lincoln's 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation.
"The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of Schlensker fruitful years and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the Source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theater of military conflict, while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the field of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship; the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than theretofore. Population has steadily
increased notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battlefield, and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union." Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Minions” (PG) - The little yellow guys in goggles got their own featurelength movie, and it's right-on-brand for them: brightly colored slapstick and harmless nincompoopery. The hapless helpers behind the super-villain in "Despicable Me," it turns out, have been serving bad-guys since the dawn of time -- T. Rex and Dracula are on their resume. After going for a long time without a master, a few intrepid minions leave their home in Antarctica to pledge loyalty to the first female super-villain, the dastardly Scarlett Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock.) Whether or not you've seen "Despicable Me," you're likely familiar with the Minions' shtick. They've been featured in various promotions and even incorporated into unrelated fields. They speak in hyper-gibberish, bump into each other and are seemingly good-natured stooges. It's hard to keep that fresh for a full run-time, but viewers under 10 certainly won't mind. “Ant-Man” (PG-13) - While he's the tiniest hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ant-Man is disproportionately strong both in terms of super-powers and movie appeal. Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) just got out of prison for stealing, but he's exactly the right kind of thief for a special heist. Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) recruits and trains Lang to wear a super-suit that can instantly shrink him to ant-size while amplify-

ing his strength. The mission: steal back Pym's size-changing research before his former protege (Corey Stoll) can use the technology for evil. The smaller-scale heroics of AntMan call for a little more humor than Marvel movies are accustomed to using. For this, Rudd is a great pick, even it isn't his brightest performance. He's the "Who, me?" kind of hero who doesn't fit the typical bill, but can still adapt to the role as the story goes along. “One & Two” (R) - Two teleporting teen siblings live under their tyrannical father in a walled-off bit of isolated farmland. The family lives with mostly handmade stuff, no electricity and regular prayer. After sundown, brother and sister Zac (Timothee Chalamet) and Eva (Kiernan Shipka) play out in the lake and meadow with their inexplicable ability to disappear in a puff of mist and instantly reappear elsewhere. Their father's cruelty drives Eva to teleport outside the farm, where she's plunged into the modern world. The acting, effects, music, tone and visuals are all top-notch. It's the story that can't deliver and feels unfinished. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Catch the wily brown if you can Matt Freeman Courier Columnist The German Brown Trout is one of the most famous and sought after of the trout species for fisherman. Often getting quite big Freeman even in small streams and really big in lakes, the Brown is the stuff of legend for the angler. Originally a species native to Europe and the near east, hence its name, the German Brown and various sub-species have been extensively transplanted all over North America including here in the Kern River and Lake Isabella. The history of the German Brown as part of our local fishery is varied, and it has gone back and forth from being a desired species that was stocked often to vilified, and everything in between. Originally first stocked in the Kern River in the 40's, the Brown Trout has called the Kern home for a long time. There was also a time that Browns were stocked directly into Lake Isabella and the area was known for its fall run of Brown Trout up the North Fork of the Kern in the 60's, many being caught at the KRV Power House in Kernville. Stocking of the Brown Trout ceased in the main Kern River and Lake Isabella soon after that but continued from time to time in the South Fork of the Kern, lastly in the Kennedy Meadows area in the late 90's when a moratorium was put on stocking Rainbow Trout.

These days there are native populations of Brown Trout in The South Fork that live with both Rainbow and Golden Trout. The North Fork also has quite a few left that are all naturally reproducing but they are rare below Johnsondale Bridge but still relatively common from the Forks of the Kern on up. There are a very few still left in Lake Isabella as well, often going undetected. There are a few around in the lake, possibly some big ones due to the large population of Threadfin Shad but most likely they remain deep and very hard to catch if they indeed do still reside in the lake at all. The Brown Trout is known both for its beauty and aggressiveness and also for being quite hard to catch once they get large. They are a wary fish and very smart. Small ones are easy to catch but the angler may very well never know his bait or lure is being "watched" by a bruiser Brownie from an undercut bank or behind a boulder, lurking unseen and too smart to be easily tricked. Brown Trout are no longer stocked because of these traits, they can eat a lot and as they grow larger they key in on fish fry and other trout. In many areas Browns are quite common, however here in the Kern they are not often caught and when they are its in small numbers. So if you are lucky enough to hook one, enjoy it and take some pictures!

NOTE: THERE IS A SUMMARY OF THE INFORMATION IN THIS DOCUMENT ATTACHED. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: YOU ARE IN DEFAULT UNDER A DEED OF TRUST DATED 06/04/2005. UNLESS YOU TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY, IT MAY BE SOLD AT A PUBLIC SALE. IF YOU NEED AN EXPLANATION OF THE NATURE OF THE PROCEEDING AGAINST YOU, YOU SHOULD CONTACT A LAWYER. Trustor: Thomas W. Manzella and M'Lissa Monique Manzella, Husband and Wife as Joint Tenants. Duly Appointed Trustee: Western Progressive Trustee, LLC. Recorded 06/10/2005 as Instrument No. 0205149744 in Book ---, Page --- of Official Records in the Office of the Recorder of Kern County California. Date of Sale: 12/11/2015 at 10:00 AM. Place of Sale: At the front entrance to the City Hall, 1501 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield, California. Estimated amount of unpaid balance and other charges: $431,528.18. WILL SELL AT PUBLIC AUCTION TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER FOR CASH, CASHIER'S CHECK DRAWN ON A STATE OR NATIONAL BANK, A CHECK DRAWN BY A STATE OR FEDERAL CREDIT UNION, OR A CHECK DRAWN BY A STATE OR FEDERAL SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION, A SAVINGS ASSOCIATION OR SAVINGS BANK SPECIFIED IN SECTION 5102 OF THE FINANCIAL CODE AND AUTHORIZED TO DO BUSINESS IN THIS STATE. All right, title and interest conveyed to and now held by the Trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described as: More fully described in said Deed of Trust. Street Address or other common designation of real property: 6041 Eugene Place, Bakersfield, CA 93308, A.P.N.: 362-061-1700. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above. The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $431,528.18. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder's sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the opening bid may be less than the total debt. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be
postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. An estimated 1.6 million California residents will learn that they have cancer this year. The American Cancer Society provides transportation to and from treatment facilities to help people with cancer receive the critical care they need; however, getting to their scheduled treatment may be a challenge. That's where the American Cancer Society Road To Recovery® program comes in." The free program provides patients rides to and from their cancer treatment. To ensure that all patients have transportation when they need it, the Society is looking for volunteer drivers, especially in the rural areas. Road To Recovery volunteers arrange their own schedules, with some volunteering as little as one afternoon a month and others driving patients as often as twice a week," Gavello noted. "If you have a reliable car, current driver's license and auto insurance, and some spare time, you can help someone keep a very important appointment." For information about the Road To Recovery program and other Society programs and services, call 1-800-227-2345, or visit cancer.org.
