The turkey or Thanksgiving? wonderopolis.org Courier FYI The history of the Thanksgiving turkey is a bit of a mystery. Nobody knows exactly how this particular bird earned a place of honor at the table each November, but historians have a few different theories. Thanks to letters and records kept by early American settlers, we know that when the colonists sat down to dine with the Wampanoag Indians, beef and fowl were on the menu. This historical meal would later become known as the first Thanksgiving. Although historians cannot say for sure which types of fowl were served up that day, a letter written by pilgrim Edward Winslow mentions a turkey hunting trip before the meal. Another theory attributes the Thanksgiving turkey to the Queen of England. During the 16th century, a fleet of Spanish ships sunk on their way to attack England. According to legend, the queen received this news while eating dinner. She was so thrilled that she ordered another goose be served. Some historians say the early settlers so inspired by the her actions roasted a turkey instead. The wild turkey is a native bird of North America. As a result, Benjamin Franklin claimed this made the turkey a more suitable national bird for the United States than the bald eagle. Not everyone agreed. The bald eagle may be America’s bird 364 days a year, but the turkey has one day all to itself: Thanksgiving.

An early recreation report was released last February and this public meeting was planned to be ahead of the formal public review and com-
ment period. The unsolved issues that were not ready for a decision at the release of the 2012 Isabella Dam Project Environmental Impact Statement. At the meetings, the Corps presented the impacts to various recreation areas around the dam. Boat Launch 19 will be permanently closed by the emergency spillway. The proposed mitigation measure is to develop a boat launch, bathrooms, and parking at French Gulch Recreation site. The Corps proposes to develop access to Old

Do the pros and cons before incorporation In responce to the letter November14 by Bruce Shank, “Kern River Valley must incorporate to stay alive.” You should read the pros and cons of incorporating on line. I do know that to avoid the so-called “fire fee,” we need to be incorporated. However, much more is involved besides going out of our area for court, such as sewer systems, property taxes, an attorney and so much more. So Bruce, do your homework and take it to the meeting of homeowners. I am really interested in learning about this, but is it really feasible money-wise, since many cannot afford it - or can they? Is annexation possible? Can we combine towns into a city? Will it create jobs? Maybe a petition is needed. Eileen Humphrey Lake Isabella

Join in Christmas in Kernville Kernville Chamber Courier Release ‘Twas the night before Christmas and down at Circle Park… For the rest of the story, you will need to come to Kernville in December. Friday, Dec. 5 starts the celebration of the season in the town of tiny lights. Circle Park has been the scene of the best display of Christmas fun in these parts. George and Darlene Randall began the “lighting of the park” some years back and now, with their blessing, community volunteers, along with the Kernville Chamber of Commerce, have taken over the creation of the happiest, brightest place in the Kern River Valley. Friday evening begins with Christmas caroling and a live nativity scene in Circle Park. Festivities start at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 6, Kernville steps back in time with antique and classic vehicles hitting the road to collect toys and Christmas goodies for children of the Valley. The Parade of Giving starts at 4 p.m. The Christmas Shop Hop also takes place Saturday, starting at 2 p.m. and runs until 7 p.m.
There will be an information table in Circle Park across from the Big Blue Bear with Shop Hop Treasure Maps. These maps will be filled with participating stores and vendor specials. The Shop Hop has become a popular event when most of the Circle Park merchants stay open late for your shopping pleasure. There will be sales of all sorts, drawings, local artists, authors and crafters with entertainment throughout the entire downtown area. Christmas treats are around every corner, so ready your taste buds for yummy cookies, hot chocolate, popcorn and coffee. Santa’s Workshop is a special place for kids of all ages and Santa arrives that evening also. So bundle up and get ready for the holiday season in Kernville’s Circle Park. Santa will be at Circle Park every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday starting Friday, Dec. 6 through Saturday, Dec. 20. It would be a good idea to get there early so you can do some shopping before the festivities begin. For more information, contact the Kernville Chamber of Commerce at 760376-2629, office@kernvillechamber.org or visit the website gotokernville.com.
Trek to the Tree December 14 Michelle Fidler, Sequoia/Kings Nat. Parks Courier Outdoors Are you looking for something fun to do with your family and friends to celebrate the holidays? Would you like to honor those who fought and died for our freedom? If so, you are invited to attend the 89th Trek to the Nation’s Christmas tree ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 14 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Kings Canyon National Park. The event, which is sponsored by the Sanger District Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the National Park Service, will include the Jubilation Singers, Sanger High School Choir, Fresno Tuba Christmas Ensemble, and a non-denominational message. During the ceremony, a National Park Service representative will speak about the General Grant Tree's role as a national shrine in memory of the men and women of the Armed Forces who have served, fought, and died to keep America free. A memorial wreath will be placed at the base of the General Grant Tree.
The ceremony will be held at the General Grant Tree, a ¼-mile walk from an adjacent parking lot. Given limited parking at the grove, a free shuttle service will be available from the Kings Canyon Visitor Center to the Grant Tree Trail. Allow an extra 30 minutes to use this in-park shuttle service. Access through the entrance to Sequoia and Kings Canyon will be free to allow park visitors to experience the celebration. In addition, chartered buses to the park from Sanger, may be available with a fee by reservation at 559-875-4575. Weird out in a good way Sam Struckhoff Courier Contributor
PICKS OF THE WEEK “Frank” (R) -- An eccentric and inspiring musician spends his life wearing a cartoony paper-mache head and writing music in a notation system that he invented himself. By Frank’s side are his soul-mate (Maggie Gyllenhaal) and a somewhat bewildered young drummer (Domhnall Gleeson). This oddball semi-adventure follows a brilliant-yetbizarre frontman whose character is drawn from several real-life rockers with complicated or unique personas. Oddest of all was the decision to cast Michael Fassbender in a role that hides his face for the duration. If you’ve got an urge for a flick with some spunk and a skewed perspective, give Frank a chance to weird you out in a good way. “Guardians of the Galaxy” (PG13) -- Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) -- or “Starlord,” as he tries to get people to call him -- is an aspiring space bandit who stumbles into possession of the All Powerful Space Gem. Well, it turns out that a merciless alien warlord really needs that space gem for his space genocide. The Galaxy’s best hope lies in Starlord and his reluctant allies: an ill-tempered raccoon-hybrid (Bradley Cooper), a green assassin lady (Zoe Saldana), a rampaging alien who doesn’t get figurative language (Dave Bautista, also known for pro wrestling and MMA) and a talking tree guy (Vin Diesel). It’s everything you want from the
Michael Fassbender as “Frank”
Marvel super-summer movie, with enough of a twist so it doesn’t feel like a recolored Avengers. If you missed it on the big screen, it’s still well-worth picking up before the inevitable sequel. “Dolphin Tale 2” (PG) -- In the last movie, a dolphin named Winter received a second chance thanks to a prosthetic tail fin and a group of dedicated humans. This time around, Winter loses her tank mate, and it’s up to a pair of teenagers (Cozi Zuehlsdorff and Nathan Gamble) to care for Winter and help find her a new companion. There’s some human-based drama, too, but the real draw lies in the sea creatures, the struggles to care for them in the right way, and the aquatic photography. Some critics have panned it as a little too saccharine-sweet. It’s certainly sentimental, but there is drama enough to entertain without stealing too much screen time from the pretty animals. This is a feel-good flick that families and aspiring biologists can enjoy together. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Follow these simple tips to make your holiday season as safe as possible: Prepare your home: Take steps to make sure your home appears occupied and it is not apparent that you are away.. ■ Stop newspaper delivery and have a neighbor get your mail and packages. ■ Ask a neighbor to leave trash at your curb on trash pickup days. ■ Use automated light timers and leave a radio or television on. ■ Lock all doors and window and double check them before you leave - and set your alarm. ■ Call your local law enforcement and request extra patrol checks for your residence, ■ Do not post travel plans on social media sites like Facebook or Twitter. On the road: Don’t carry large sums of cash. Use travelers’ checks or credit cards whenever possible. ■ Always have a charged cell phone.
■ Never text or dial a phone when you are driving. ■ Plan your route carefully. Have map print-outs of your location - even if you have a GPS in-car mapping system. ■ In the case of a breakdown, turn on your flashers and open your hood to signify you need assistance. Stay in your vehicle with your doors locked if it is in a safe location. ■ Never drink and drive. If you or a loved one has had too much to drink, call a cab or stay at a friend or relatives’ house. Out and About: Carry your purse close to your body - don’t let it dangle. Carry your wallet inside a coat or front pocket. ■ If someone comes to snatch your purse from you, do NOT resist or fight back. A purse and credit cards can be replaced. Make sure all children traveling with you know the name of their parents, cell phone numbers and hotel name. ■ Avoid isolated paths or roads - stick to well-lit and well-used areas. ■ Never leave valuables in your hotel room. For any additional tips on safe holiday travel or if you have any questions, contact the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit at 661-391-7559 or by email at crimeprevention@kernsheriff.com.
Health Insurance Matters
Medicare enrollment about to end Harry P. Thal Courier Columnist The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) for Medicare is about to end. Each year, from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, people with Stand Alone prescription Thal drug plans or are on a Medicare Advantage HMO type plan have this annual time to change plans. So do the insurance companies, as most have changed the premiums, benefits and the prescriptions covered. JoAnn tells me that she checked the formulary for her prescription drug plan (PDP) and all her medications are covered, so therefore, she is satisfied. She failed to see that there will be a “prior authorization” restriction for the coming year, and now her physician will need to contact the drug plan for authorization before the pharmacy will be allowed to fill the prescription with the insurance paying their share. Tim discovered one of his medications will require “step therapy.” I defined this to him that his physician will need to try less costly medications first, and if these don’t work, then he can get approval for the restricted medication. What neither of these people realized is that a competitive plan may have no restrictions, and a lower cost. Sometimes you need to kick the tires before buying. This year, Dec. 7 is a Sunday, so in
reality, the cut off is Friday, Dec. 5. The procrastinators will be waiting until the last minute, so I expect that the computer systems and the phone lines will be jammed during the last several days. Getting a start early in the week will assure you of getting your changes through in time. Have you already changed plans, and are having second thoughts? The rule is, the last application in during the AEP is the one that will count. Do you have a Medicare Supplement? If so, you are not affected by the AEP; only the Medicare Advantage HMOs and the PDP plans are. Medicare supplements fall under a different set of rules. In California, if you wanted to change supplements, you must either qualify medically to change with most companies, or wait until your birthday. California law allows you to switch to equal or lesser coverage for 30 days following your birthday and the month prior. For individuals and families not yet age 65, the Open Enrollment period for Individual and family plans (IFP) began on Nov. 15 and will run until March 15. The major rush will be between now and Dec. 14. Completed applications will then be effective Jan. 1. Any applications received after Dec. 15 will be effective the second month following, or Feb. 1. Local Certified agents are available to assist you at no charge. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker in California (0621106) Thal is on the National Association of Health Underwriters Medicare Advisory Board. He may be reached at 760-376-2100, harrythal@aol.com or harrythal. com.

ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) That change in holiday travel plans might be more vexing than you’d expected. But try to take it in stride. Also, it couldn’t hurt to use that Aries charm to coax out some helpful cooperation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your determination helps you deal with an unforeseen complication. And, as usual, you prove that when it comes to a challenge, you have what it takes to take it on. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although a romantic theme dominates much of the week, all those warm and fuzzy feelings don’t interfere with the more pragmatic matters you need to take care of. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Best not to ignore those doubts about an upcoming decision. Instead, recheck the facts you were given to make sure nothing important was left out. A weekend surprise awaits you. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) No time for a catnap -yet. You might still have to straighten out one or two factors so that you can finally assure yourself of the truth about a troubling workplace situation. Stay with it. VIRGO (Aug. 23 Sept. 22) News from an old friend could lead to an unexpected (but nonetheless welcome) reunion with someone who had once been very special in your life. Be open to the possibilities.
LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) It might be time for a family council. The sooner those problems are resolved, the sooner you can move ahead with your holiday preparations. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Take some time out to give more attention to a personal relationship that seems to be suffering from a sense of emotional neglect. Provide that much-needed reassurance. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Cheer up. That unusual circumstance that might faze most people can be handled pretty well by the savvy Sagittarian. Look at it as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Someone you believe has hurt you in the past might now need your help. Reaching out could be difficult. But you will be able to do the right thing, as always. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Prioritizing is an important part of your pre-holiday scheduling. Try to give time both to your workday responsibilities and those personal matters you might have neglected. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) With the vestiges of your anger about that painful incident fading, you can now focus all your energy on the more positive aspects of your life, including that personal situation.

Advanced Reconveyance, Inc., As Trustee, 554 West Lancaster Boulevard, Lancaster, CA 93534, 661-945-5525, Vickie Durham, Trustee Sale Officer NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on the notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgages, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 661-945-5525 using the file number 14-2290. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet web site. The best way to verify the postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The Corps is coordinating with the Forest Service and other agencies to determine "like-kind" capacity of recreation facilities to create alternatives for the other three affected sites,

The positive impact of changing the toe of the dam is that there will no longer be a need to move either Highway 155 or Highway 178.

During the meeting on Friday, McNally shared with Stephens that he had met with the presiding judge and several options are being discussed that would allow the courthouse to be reopened on a part time basis in 2015.
