Out Inside
Michael Batelaan Courier Honors On December 7, the 73rd anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day, the Kern River Community of Wofford Heights gathered to thank and honor all those who served past, present and future. 54 Kern Valley World War II and Korean War Veterans, as well as the “Rosie the Riveters” and a “Welding Wendy,” were all in attendence at the Reel Cinema in Wofford Heights. Al Rodriguez of Wofford Heights was the only known valley Pearl Harbor survivor in attendance for the program. The day was coordinated by Gary Zuber of Honor Flight Kern County and Darlene Studdard, Bookkeeping+ of the KRCWH. The Sheriff Activities League color guard led off the afternoon event
with the presentation of colors, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Veteran Jim Ash gave the invocation. Sierra Sound, a part of the Kern Valley Sweet Adelines, then performed the Star Spangled Banner, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, BoogieWoogie Bugle Boy and a This is My Country/God Bless America medley. Dick Taylor, director of Kern County Veteran’s Services, and a former Marine, advised the veterans of some of the services available to them. There was a video tour of the WWII Memorial in Washington DC, narrated by Tom Hanks. Honor Flight Kern County’s Lori Crown and Gary Zuber reminded those who hadn’t been on the Honor Flight that they can still go. Zuber also advised the veterans that on the
second Tuesday of each month the VFW will host a breakfast, free for WWII and Korean veterans, beginning Dec. 11. A representative from Congressman Kevin McCarthy’s office offered the Congressman’s congratulations and support. Then each of the 54 participants received a certificate of commendation, one from Kern County Board of Supervisors, First District Supervisor Mick Gleason, and one from State Assembly member Shannon Grove. There was a raffle, supported by the local merchants of the Kern Valley, and a lunch provided by the Kern River Valley Elks #2358. After the food was served, the participants were treated to a showing of the movie, Monuments Men, courtesy of the Reel Cinema.

Remember, it will take you longer to reach your destination, so leave yourself plenty of time to get there safely. Celebrate the 2014 Holiday Season safely, if you’re going to drink, don’t drive. Be sure to let a designated driver be your hero and get you to your destination. Be safe and always wear your seatbelts.

It was a dark and stormy night and I was walking barefooted across the front room rug, when I felt something brush across my foot. I looked down and there was a dreaded mouse. He scurried across the room and under a coffee table. Now I know that mice don’t drink coffee so he wouldn’t be there long. I peered under the coffee table with my flashlight and he zoomed under the TV. Now I’m sure he doesn’t watch TV and then I saw him head for the pantry. I was in hot pursuit. I grabbed a fly swatter and was whacking at him all across the room. He went under the pantry door. I opened it and he was nowhere in sight. But I knew that the war was on. It was me versus the one ounce furry rodent. I went out to my workshop and grabbed my box of mouse weapons. I had them all: the Victor spring traps, Di-con, rodent maze box and my fly swatter. I knew based on the route this tiny mouse used meant that I would need traps in several places so here’s what I did. First I gave them warning, “I know you’re out there and if you stick around you’re going to get smushed.” I did this for humanitarian reasons, plus I always feel bad when I see what a spring trap does to a
one ounce mouse. I’ve noticed that a spring trap set with peanut butter seems to be the best method for capturing those little vandals. I say vandal because on inspection of items in the pantry, my wife found several plastic bags with little knawed holes. “Ewwww,” she said, and promptly threw away all of the damaged goods. Now she was really mad. She turned to me and said, “The gloves are off. Go get them you brave strong man!" Buoyed by her faith in me, my chest swelled, my muscles expanded and I was ready to do battle. I placed five Victor traps in five places. I put peanut butter on each and then I sat back waiting for the carnage. Nothing happened until two in the morning when I heard a trap go off in my bathroom. What was that mouse doing in my bathroom? Taking a shower? Drinking out of the toilet? Or eating my toothpaste? Whatever he was doing he was a goner. That was number one. The next morning another mouse had bit the dust under the sink. Vicki says she does not allow dust under the sink but the mouse was dead anyway. Three days have passed and no sightings or smooshing has occurred. I’m still vigilant, I have plenty of peanut butter and I think I'm winning the battle. Mice, you messed with the wrong guy! The solution to imperfections Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist Recently I was reminded that I am a sinner! I was headed home to Wofford Heights, and at about the dam I came up behind an SUV travelling sigSchlensker nificantly (10 percent) slower than the speed limit. I followed--perhaps more closely that I should--at a distance that is supposed to indicate to the slower driver that I would like for them to use a turnout and let me get past. (At least I have come to believe in the two years in the KRV, that that is how it’s supposed to work.) My speed while driving has owed much over my nearly 50 years of driving to the coaching of my high school driver-training instructor, who tried to teach us not do dwadle on the road. He said, “Since traffic accidents happen in time, the less time you spend on the road, the less likely you are to have an accident.” As a math-science student, in my mind, that translated to the faster you go, the less time you spend on the road, and the less likely you are to be involved in an accident. All within the boundaries of safety, of course! So my habit has been to travel at safe speeds within (and this from a state trooper or two) 10 percent of the limit. So, after the slower driver passed by two opportunities to pull over and let me by, I opted to pass when we got to the straight uphill stretch just
beyond the curve from Hungry Gulch. As soon as I saw the whole straight uphill stretch was clear, I did not wait until the double yellow line became dashed, I passed the slower vehicle and proceeded up the hill, being relieved to get around the more contemplative driver. When I got over the hill and into Wofford Heights, I stopped to get my mail from our box at the Post Office. When I came back out the SUV I’d passed was motoring through the parking lot. As I was getting into my truck the driver stopped and said, “Excuse me, do you know that you crossed a double yellow line when you passed me?” I admitted that I did know that. I reasserted the safety of my maneuver and noted that she’d had a couple of opportunities to pull over. She still insisted that I broke the law. She was right! I did break the law. My last words to her were “Thank you.” I need a reminder on a regular basis that I am not a faultless person. In fact, the Bible says that “there is not a righteous man on earth who continually does good and who never sins"”Ecclesiastes 7:20). My need for forgiveness and a Savior were, once again, brought into bold relief. This lady was a God-send: what a gift in early Advent as we prepare to welcome into our world and hearts, the Savior of the world, Who brought us forgiveness of sins, Who was born of the virgin Mary, and laid in a manger in Bethlehem. O come, let us adore Him! Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella.

Forest dumpsters not for household dumping The Sequoia National Forest spends thousands of dollars annually to dispose of trash left in Forest Service campgrounds. This taxpayer money is purposed to keep campgrounds and recreation sites clean, not meant to subsidize trash-dumping of households that choose not to dispose of their trash properly nor for contractors that try to save money by not disposing of post-job refuse in the proper manner. Forest Service Law Enforcement has already issued tickets to several individuals who have been caught repeatedly transporting and depositing their household trash into Forest Service dumpsters. Dumping of any refuse, debris, trash or litter brought as such from private property is a violation of Federal regulations. Law enforcement will continue to enforce this policy, and violators will be fined $325 each time caught. The Kern County Waste Management’s Kern Valley Transfer Station is located six miles southeast of Kernville on Sierra Way. Hours of operation are Thursday through Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the station allows household trash to be dropped off at no charge.

It hits hard Sam Struckhoff Courier Contributor
PICKS OF THE WEEK “1,000 Times Good Night” (R) -- As a photojournalist working in some of the world’s deadliest places, Rebecca (Juliette Binoche) faces untold danger so she can make a difference by photographing the reality of war. Her husband (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and two daughters wait for her at home in Ireland, suffering each time she leaves. When Rebecca gets too close to a suicide bomber, her husband tells her that she must stop putting her life in danger, or she’ll lose her family. The film hits hard with scenes of Rebecca navigating and snapping away as conflict, carnage and inhumanity surround her, then follows up with emotional gutpunches when she realizes what she puts her family through. “Pride” (R) -- When you think of groups who have formed ironclad alliances, you really don’t think of coal miners and gay activists as brothers in arms. However, in England in 1984, coal miners had to fight to keep their industry alive and their hometowns from folding under pressure from the Thatcher administration. A group of gay and lesbian activists sympathize with the plight of the miners, and earnestly offer their help to the perplexed workers. It’s a high-spirited Brit comedy
Juliette Binoche and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in “1,000 Times Good Night” with good intentions and the right tone. The characters are cut sympathetically, the jokes are charming, and emotional weight is earnest without being cloying. Sexual activities and questions are referenced, but it never gets raunchy. It’s a crowd pleaser with a good outlook. “The Trip to Italy” (R) -- This sequel to the 2010 British hit “The Trip” puts comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon back on the road to semi-improvised hilarity. The two comedians play slightly fictionalized versions of themselves. They”re friends, sort of. Well, they”re adult men who are able to stand one anothe’s company, keep a conversation going and compete over who can do the best vocal impressions. It beats loneliness. This time, they’re on a newspaper assignment to travel around Italy, eating fine foods and writing about it. It’s a serving of dry, ridiculous humor with well-portioned bits of reality. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) Your love of the holidays creates a special bond between you and the people in your life. Use this as a way of building stronger relationships that will carry over well beyond this time. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new approach could go a long way toward resolving a painful estrangement, especially at this holiday time. And since your aspects favor friendship this week, why not go ahead and try it? GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your positives continue to dominate, and any negative factors that squeeze in can be dealt with easily. The secret is to tackle them at once and not allow them to benefit by your neglect. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Good news: A colleague’s remarks could help you move toward ultimately resolving that persistent workplace situation. Meanwhile, enjoy the holidays with loved ones. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) No one reflects the bright holiday more than all you Leos and Leonas who love the shimmer and glimmer of the season. P.S.: There just might be a very special something from Santa. VIRGO (Aug. 23 Sept. 22) Celebrate the holidays by being more receptive to new experiences. Overriding your reluctance to try new things could be the best gift you’ve given yourself in a long while.
LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Good news about a loved one makes the holidays even more festive. Expect some unexpected gifts, so be prepared with a few nicely wrapped packages of goodies to offer in return. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) The holiday season provides an opportunity to meet new people, some of whom you might even consider “worthy” enough to join the Scorpio’s select group of friends. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) You always bring your own wonderful sparkle and light to the holidays, and don’t be surprised if this year someone special reaches out to respond to your warmth in kind. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Togetherness is the dominant theme for your holiday celebrations this year. That means reaching out to bring everyone you care for into your very own special circle of light. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) A reminder of a very special moment from the past makes the holidays more memorable for the romantic Aquarian. New friendships hold the promise of a romantic future as well. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Getting into the swim of things for all you party-loving Pisceans is easy enough this holiday season. And, of course, you can expect to impress people wherever you go.
