National Pie Day Michael Batelaan Courier Just desserts National Pie Day is celebrated annually on January 23rd. The designation was started in the mid1970s by Boulder, Colorado teacher Charlie Papazian after he declared his birthday to be National Pie Day. National Pie Day is now sponsored by the American Pie Council since 1986, according to Wikipedia. National Pie Day, an unofficial national holiday, was created simply to celebrate the pie. It is a day for all to bake or cook their favorite pies. Even more importantly, it is a day set aside for all to enjoy eating pies, said nationaldaycalendar.com. Go out for pie or try a "tried and true" recipe. Use #NationalPieDay to post on social media. The first pies appeared around 9500 BC in the Egyptian Neolithic period or New Stone Age. National Pie Day was created by the APC. The American Pie Celebration started in 1986 to commemorate Crisco's 75th anniversary of "serving foods to families everywhere". The American Pie Council is an organization committed to "preserving America's pie heritage and promoting America's love affair with pies". National Pie Day should not be confused with Pi Day which the U.S. Congress recognizes as March 14. Let us eat pie! people

Brother and sister pattern our weather noaa.gov Courier Trends El Niño and La Niña are complex weather patterns resulting from variations in ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific. El Niño and La Niña are opposite phases of what is known as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, or ENSO, cycle. The ENSO cycle is a scientific term that describes the fluctuations in temperature between the ocean and atmosphere in the east-central Equatorial Pacific

(approximately between the International Date Line and 120 degrees West). La Niña is sometimes referred to as the cold phase of ENSO and El Niño as the warm phase of ENSO. These deviations from normal surface temperatures can have large-scale impacts not only on ocean processes, but also on global weather and climate. El Niño and La Niña episodes typically last nine to 12 months, but some prolonged events may last for years. While their frequency can be

quite irregular, El Niño and La Niña events occur on average every two to seven years. Typically, El Niño occurs more frequently than La Niña. El Niño means The Little Boy, or Christ Child in Spanish. El Niño was originally recognized by fishermen off the coast of South America in the 1600s, with the appearance of unusually warm water in the Pacific Ocean. The name was chosen based on the time of year (around December) during which these warm waters events tended to occur.

The term El Niño refers to the large-scale oceanatmosphere climate interaction linked to a periodic warming in sea surface temperatures across the central and east-central Equatorial Pacific. Typical El Niño effects are likely to develop over North America during the upcoming winter season. Those include warmerthan-average temperatures over western and central Canada, and over the western and northern United States. Wetterthan-average conditions

Kern Valley Aquatics Program dares you to dip into the wintery waters at the 6th annual Polar Plunge, which raises money to provide scholarships for swim lessons and lifeguard training for our local youth. On Friday, January 29 all teenagers, 6th through 12th grade, are encouraged to join in on a fun, filled library scavenger hunt. California boasts great sport fishing opportunities January is the perfect month to purchase a 2016 sport fishing license. Purchasing a license now allows anglers to take advantage of a full year of access to great fishing found up and down the state. In addition, sport fishing licenses make great gifts for family and friends. Gift vouchers may be purchased online and printed immediately. With more than 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, 4,172 lakes and reservoirs and 80 major rivers, freshwater fishing opportunities abound in California. The Golden State also features more than 1,100 miles of coastline that is home to hundreds of native fish and shellfish species.

CALM docent/wildlife trainings to begin For those who love wildlife, nature, children, and sharing information, the California Living Museum has two unique volunteer opportunities - its docent program and wildlife rehabilitation program. The seven-week docent training class begins on Feb. 6 and runs every Saturday through March 19. Classes are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at CALM. Volunteers will learn how to educate school children and visitors about California wildlife and their habitats. Not only will volunteers learn about wildlife in a classroom setting, they will be trained to handle CALM's ambassador animals. The minimum age requirement to become a CALM docent is 18 years, but those 12 to 17 can join the team as bio-fact docents, which provide educational interpretation utilizing prepared specimens and artifacts. The training schedule is the same as adult docents. There is no cost to attend the classes, however, docents must submit to fingerprinting and T.B. testing at their cost. The wildlife rehabilitation training class is scheduled for Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 2 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the zoo. Volunteers will learn how to assist CALM animal keepers to care for the more than 600 injured and orphaned animals that come to the facility each year. The minimum age requirement is 15. There is a $20 fee for the rehabilitation class, which includes a t-shirt. All attendees are required to provide a yearly commitment to their program and there is a minimum time requirement of four hours per month. Deadline to register is Tuesday, Feb. 2. Kern County Grand Jury volunteer applicants Applications for the Kern County Grand Jury will be accepted from now through April 1. The Kern County Grand Jury is made up of a group of 19 citizens, randomly selected from a pool of citizens who have made their interest known. Applicants are interviewed and then nominated by the Superior Court Judges of our County. Judges are very interested in obtaining a volunteer pool representative of the ethnic and cultural diversity of all communities in our County. The final selection process will be conducted in open session of court during the month of June. Once selected, Grand Jurors act as an investigative body to ensure that county and city governments are efficiently operated and that public funds are effectively spent. The Grand Jury also hears evidence of public offences presented by the Kern County District Attorney's Office and, where appropriate, may issue criminal indictments. Applicants must be willing to spend approximately 20 hours a week in performing these tasks. Candidates for the Grand Jury must be Unites States citizens, at least 18 years of age, have a working knowledge of the English language and have resided in the County for at least one year. Grand Jurors serve for a one year period beginning July 2016. First off duck tape is actually duct tape and is used to seal duct work in buildings. Often called duck tape it has a plethora of uses. The Middleworth first thing you notice about it is that once it's stuck on something and sets for a day it is almost impossible to remove. I've always used it but never thought about why I liked it so. Let me give you a few examples of duck tape and its usages. A couple of years ago I bought a really great and warm jacket. The second day I wore it I tore the sleeve. I thought, well there goes a good coat, and then I had a brainstorm. The coat is grey, the same color as duck tape so why not tape the tear with silver duct tape? That has been 3 years and the repair is still holding well. Last Christmas my grandson who always gives me strange gifts had this one in a box wrapped solidly with duck tape. My job was to get through the tape and somehow find his present to me. I worked on that rascal for half an hour till I finally freed and found inside a box full of new batteries. Yesterday a bulb in an outside light fixture burned out. To

remove it I had to reach down through the top and could barely touch the bulb. I unscrewed it but I couldn't pull it up and out of the fixture. I had a great idea, I took a 1 inch dowel about 6 inches long and put duck tape on the end so when rolled the sticky side would be out. Placing the dowel in the fixture and pushing against the light bulb with the tape I was able to pull the bulb out and then I reversed the procedure and put a new bulb in. I keep duct tape in my boat, my truck, my cars, my toolboxes, my garage and my workshop. If you think that this tape is only for men it now comes in a lot of different colors, pink, brown, red, yellow and blue that I know of. So women use it for repairs that match around the house. When I was racing outboards I had a collision with another boat putting a hole in the side of my boat beneath the water line. I headed for shore, took my boat out of the water, wiped off the side and sealed the hole with duct tape. In the next heat at the end of 5 laps around the course I finished the race in 1st place and examination of the duct repair showed it was holding fast and good for another 2 or 3 races. Church welcomes Richey family First Baptist Church, Kernville Courier Faith At the beginning of the New Year, First Baptist Church of Kernville welcomed their new Pastor and his family. Pastor Ben Richey arrived in Kernville January 1st and immediately assumed the new role. The Richey family comes to us from just outside of Montgomery, Alabama, where Pastor Ben had been serving as the Assistant Pastor of Heritage Baptist Church for the past six years. Ben and Heather are both graduates of the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, and Ben went on to receive further training at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Southern Seminary, and graduated with his Master of Divinity from the Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, AL.

Along with being a pastor, Ben is also a writer, musician and artist. He and Heather enjoy international travel and missions work and have been serving together in ministry since 2002. The Richeys, who have ministered exclusively back east in Illinois, Ohio and Alabama, are looking forward to immersing themselves in the mountain life here in the Kern River Valley. Their two older children, Mikaela and Topher, are enrolled in the Kernville Elementary School and have been enjoying their experience thus far. Pastor Ben is currently preaching a series on the early church from the book of Acts entitled "R.E.A.C.H.: Recovering Our Identity and Purpose as the Church" on Sunday mornings. Sunday worship begins at 10 a.m. and the church is located at 46 Valley View Dr. in Kernville.

Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist Yesterday, January 21. 2016, was the 43rd anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v Wade decision, and lovers of life are again especially grieved that Schlensker on this date according to the National Right to Life Committee the number of lost lives since that infamous case stands, as of 14 January, at 58,586,256. NRLC President Carol Tobias asserts that, "Each one of these abortions is a tragedy, not just because an innocent child has died, but because of the lasting impact the abortion itself had on the mothers of those children…” We might wonder why the proliferation of abortion on demand was ever legalized in the first place. That's because these lives have been de-humanized and renamed "tissue," which might as well be the same sort of "tissue," which is routinely excised from unhealthy patients in hospitals and doctors' offices all the time as the cause of their health problem. The removal of that fetal "tissue," though, is believed to be the source of some social, financial or simply inconvenience problem. But that "fetal tissue" is no less than a human being. If anyone is aware of any pregnancy of a female human being in the history on the world, which

has yielded anything else than a human baby, I'd like to know. Michael Stokes of University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota, says, "Roe is a radical decision and a legally indefensible one. But what really make's Roe unbearably wrong is its consequences. The result of Roe and Doe has been the legally authorized killing of nearly 60 million Americans since 1973. Roe v. Wade authorized unrestricted private violence against human life on an almost unimaginable scale, and did so, falsely, in the name of the Constitution." Dr. Martin Luther King said in his letter from a Birmingham Jail, "A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law." The guidelines God gave for the conduct of human creatures is good and right because it was written by the Creator. The Maker will always know how his product will function best. Happily, Lutherans for Life reports that "the CDC released new numbers showing a 35 percent decline in US abortions between 1990 and 2010, to 17.7 abortions per 1,000 women between ages 15 and 44," and "A new national poll finds that a majority of Americans support shifting funding away from Planned Parenthood to community health centers that don't do abortions." PICKS OF THE WEEK “Man Up” (R) - This British romantic-comedy manages to put refreshing fun back into the formula without becoming an overt parody of the genre. Much of that is owed to its stars, Simon Pegg ("Shaun of the Dead," "Star Trek") and Lake Bell (check out her writing/directing/starring debut about voice-actors, "In a World ..."). The wacky circumstances of their courtship start when Jack (Pegg) mistakes Nancy (Bell) for his blind date. Nancy, in a flash of spontaneity, overcomes her cynicism and goes along with the date, until all sorts of chemical reactions start taking place. “Bridge of Spies” (PG-13) Tom Hanks plays a stalwart American attorney dutifully defending a Soviet spy in this tense ColdWar drama directed by Steven Spielberg. James B. Donovan (Hanks) is appointed to defend Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) after Abel is caught smuggling intel in 1957. The judge, prosecutor and everyone else but Donovan sees this as a show trial leading up to an execution. Donovan fights for his client's life and the principles of the Constitution, leading to a prisonerswap deal under the shadow of the newly built Berlin Wall. The film has a few bursts of deftly directed energy -- Spielberg's still got it -- but overall goes for a more moody and nostalgic tone. Hanks is

Bodfish Bob Bodfish Bob’s Mushroom Casserole 32 oz. canned mushrooms, drained or use fresh mushrooms 2 tbsp. finely chopped onion 2 tbsp. butter 1/4 c. bread crumbs 2 tsp. lemon juice 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp.Worcestershire sauce 1/2 c. light cream 1/2 c. shredded American cheese Sauté mushrooms with onion and butter for 5 minutes, until tender. Add crumbs, cook 2 minutes. Stir in lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce and seasonings. Place in baking dish. Pour

The Whitney Portal Road Reconstruction is planned for the 2016 season under a funding request from Inyo County. The road will be re-paved and needs significant repairs for safety. The project begins just west of Lone Pine and ends just east of Whitney Portal. "There is no way to complete this project without having a significant impact on visitors to the Whitney Portal area," said Ed Armenta, Forest Supervisor. "The road has only one ingress/egress and the already limited parking will be much reduced. Accessing the area may be, at times, difficult and frustrating. Your planning and

patience will help complete this very important project." Visitors have long used roadside parking as an overflow. During construction near Whitney Portal, this roadside parking will not be available. Construction delays will be up to three hours, twice a day. Visitors to Whitney Portal should anticipate that there may not be parking space. Visitors to Whitney Portal should consider carpooling, being dropped off by friends, or shuttle services available from the Lone Pine area. Visitors who want to hike Mt. Whitney are strongly encouraged to enter the lottery since walk-in permits will not be issued when parking is unavailable. Please apply via www.recreation.gov.
