In 1723, the Delaware Indians settled Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania between the Allegheny and the Susquehanna Rivers. The Indians considered groundhogs their honorable ancestors. When German settlers arrived in the 1700s, they brought a tradition known as Candlemas Day, which came at mid-point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. Superstition held that if the weather was fair, the second half of winter would be stormy and cold. If the sun came out Feb. 2, it meant six more weeks of wintry weather. If the sun made an appearance an animal would cast a shadow, thus predicting six more weeks of winter. Germans watched a badger for the shadow. In Pennsylvania, the groundhog was the replacement. The American reference to Groundhog Day was found in an entry in 1841. Pennsylvania's official celebration on February 2, 1886. The groundhog was given the name "Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, and Weather Prophet Extraordinary'' and his hometown thus called the "Weather Capital of the World.'' According to ‘Punxsutawney’s’ handlers, Phil weighs 15 pounds and thrives on dog food and ice cream in his climate-controlled home at the Punxsutawney Library at Gobbler's Knob where Phil is placed in a heated burrow underneath a simulated tree stump on before being pulled out at 7:25 a.m. to make his prediction.

Sixty Kern Valley High School senior class students gathered Monday morning for "Mad City Money" hosted by AltaOne Federal Credit Union, an exciting financial literacy program for teens where they learned about the real world of budgeting and finance. For four hours students participated in a simulation that teaches basic money management in a safe, fun setting, because a presentation on
budgeting likely would have put the teens to sleep. The hands-on simulation appeals to teens and gives them a taste of the real world, complete with occupation, salary, spouse, student loan debt, credit card debt, and medical insurance payments. The students got an instant family and then moved about the stations to purchase housing, transportation, food, clothing, household necessities, day care, and other needs. The simulation included a mall for "wants," a pushy car salesperson, a

Our Kern County library is one of only a very small percentage of libraries that does not have voter approved funding. ALE is asking for you to turn out and speak up at the meeting. merged. When it was dinner time and people moved to the dining area I would pump water to another part of the boat to keep balance. At the sound of a dive in the control room, huge valves are opened to allow water to replace the air captured between the boats two hulls. As soon as all of the outside valves close the control room officer puts pressure in the boat by putting air in a pressure mode to make sure there are no air leaks. Although the boat is capable of running deep at a moderate speed much of the cruising is done by snorkel. The snorkel is an air pipe that runs through the hull, up and above the surface where it allows air into the boat so the motors can be run without wasting battery power. My submarine The Rasher SSR269, was noted for the fact that during WWII it torpedoed and sunk the second most tonnage of any boat in the fleet. After WWII the Rasher was mothballed until it was revived, cut in half while a 30 ft. section of electronics was welded in place. Our mission at sea while we were 75 to 100 miles away was to relay pictures from our antennae array to the fleet giving them advance notice of any foreign craft. The food was great, the compatibility of the crew was superb and we felt needed. Time has passed and the Rasher cut up into scrap and only the ships bell remains. But the memories remain.
When I was in the Navy I spent much of my time in the submarine service. Almost immediately when people find this out I hear quesMiddleworth tions about what it's like and isn't it claustrophobic? The first word of explanation is that being bottled up in a 350 foot submersible craft takes a certain mind set. By the time you have spent 12 weeks in submarine school and have done all the exercises that they make you do they have weeded out the ones who don't fit the profile needed to be a submariner. The first thing you are given when you report aboard the sub. (Boat) is a manual and instructions to learn how everything on a boat works. You must be able to recognize every valve and its use, every instrument and how it works. You even have to know how to work with the torpedo man to load and fire the torpedoes. You have to understand all of the conning tower instruments, the maneuvering room and its electrical connections and the control room where most of the action takes place when submerged. During a dive all hands report to a battle station and there you stay until relieved. My job was on the balancing manifold, with it I kept the boat balanced when it was sub-

Walking in community
Too much of a good thing?
Ben Richey, Courier Columnist A number of years ago I was in Nepal to share the gospel. When we arrived, our guide told us that we were "going for a walk" into some remote Richey mountain villages in order to encourage the embattled Christians. I expected a short, breezy, low-impact stroll- what I got was a Nepali walk. We set off on foot for a three-hour hike across waterfalls and ledges, through terraced rice paddies and tiny villages. When we arrived, exhausted, we were told we would take another "short walk" to a village down in the valley. Several hours, and several thousand feet later we arrived back, completely wiped out. Due to my own lack of fitness, that "walk" was one of the hardest things I have ever done. The Apostle Paul did a similar thing. He invited the Ephesian church on a "walk." He said "walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." (Ephesians 4:1-3). Thinking through the ramifications of those instructions, you realize that's no walk in the park- that's a Nepali walk. Those of us who struggle spiritually probably feel we'd have a better chance hiking up and down the Himalayas.
Scripture can lay out some daunting expectations at times. Fortunately, we rarely have to read very far down the page before we get to the "how to." A few verses later, Paul says that in order to help us "walk worthy," God gave us "apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ" until we attain maturity. In other words, God's design for us is that we never walk alone. Biblical community, when done right, can be a powerful tool for spiritual success. If Christian community is not a part of our lives we can't expect to fully realize our growth potential. If we shun the community He gave us, we're handicapping our own walk. God gave us more spiritually mature people to help us "get fit" for a worthy walk. As we hiked up from the valley floor in Nepal, I got so tired that I almost collapsed. Our guide put his hands on my shoulder, began to pray aloud and spoke encouraging words to me. Then he and some others helped me to my feet and together we slowly made our way back up. Much like in our spiritual lives, my success came in tandem with the community reaching in to help me. If you are a Christian flying solo, seek out a community of believers where the Bible will be taught faithfully, where you will be encouraged and challenged regularly, and where you will be spurred on to "walk worthy." It will make all the difference in the world. Ben Richey is pastor of Kerville First Baptist Churh.

Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist Can you get too much of a good thing? Most assuredly! Rain is a very good thing, but I have a pretty steep unpaved driveway, and Schlensker recent rains (My rain gauge in Wofford Heights has indicated over 3" in the last 6 weeks!) have produced growing gullies. Now please don't think I am unthankful for the rain; I am praising God for it. However, I will have to get out my shovel and wheelbarrow and transport some fill to restore my driveway. Even more notable, though, are the severe floods, which have occurred in other parts of our country recently. Those folks have surely received too much of a good thing! Then there's food. That's a good thing, without which we would die. We need food, and it is not only nourishing, but we also tend to enjoy its taste. That's why many - if not most of us tend to eat a little - or a lot more food than we ought. Food is one of God's most wonderful blessings, but we certainly can get too much of a good thing with respect to food, and obesity and all of its threats and dangers come to us as well. Most folks enjoy sunshine. Psychologists say it's an important climatological factor for the best mental health. Sunshine is good! Without it there'd be no living plants. Thus no

food. I don't know anyone, who doesn't like to feel the warmth of the sun on their body. The Beach Boys even sang a song about it! However, if you stay in the sun too long or absorb too many of its energetic rays, you will get a sunburn. And that can be pretty unpleasant - too much of a good thing. Dermatologists tell us we might also develop skin cancer from too much sun exposure. That's even more unpleasant. My Christmas cactus loves light but direct sunshine will shrivel it up - too much of a good thing. We really like our vehicles, and are well blessed on their account. There's been really good progress in vehicular transportation in the past several decades. However, just try to drive in LA at almost any time, and you will experience too much of this good thing! One good - no, great - thing, of which you cannot get too much, is God's grace! We certainly need it, but because we are sin-tainted to the core of our being, we can never get too much of it. It'll never hurt or harm us in any way! And, on the other hand, it's also always sufficient; it flows freely, and there's never an insufficiency. Like God said to Paul about his physical ailment, "My grace is sufficient for you" (2 Con. 12:9), God's grace is sufficient for us, too, but we can never get too much of that very good thing! Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella.

007 slick and stylish but... Sam Struckhoff Daniel Craig in "Spectre"
Courier Contributor
PICKS OF THE WEEK “Spectre” (PG-13) - James Bond's latest adventure pits him against a timely challenge -- a farreaching surveillance network threatens to unravel the espionage program. Doesn't sound so bad, though, right? New technology must supplant the old ways, and Bond has always caused more destruction than planned. Unfortunately, 007 (Daniel Craig) has it on good authority that Spectre, a super-powerful conspiracy, has plans to hijack the surveillance network, essentially giving them immense power on the global stage. It's slick and stylish and all that, but continuing with the current Bond trend, it's getting more serious, more dark and more concerned with Bond's role in the modern world. This is where it goes off-track, even for longtime Bond fans. As the stories go deeper into Bond's background, we're forced to wonder if we care about that as much as the fun stuff. “Crimson Peak” (R) - Mia Wasikowska is the girl-in-peril in this Gothic romance from Guillermo Del Toro. Edith (Waskikowska) is a quiet literary type from Buffalo, New York, around the turn of the 20th century. After the brutal murder of her father, she's whisked away by a dashing Englishman (Tom Hiddleston) to live in his castle with him and his twisted sister (Jessica Chastain). The castle is as spooky as they come, and as Edith realizes that her life is in danger, the
mysteries mount up. The first thing viewers will notice is that it's gorgeously creepy. Each frame is a painting, and every shadow is crawling with pointy detail. It could be that too much attention was paid to the set and not enough to the story. Either way, the mastery of color and screen brings out goosebumps. “99 Homes” (R) - Rick Carver (Michael Shannon at his most stony and villainous) turns homeowners into the homeless in the span of an afternoon. He's a real-estate broker who uses intimidation and the police to aggressively evict people from foreclosed homes, then sells the property at a profit. With a son and a mother to look out for, Dennis (Andrew Garfield) finds himself desperate after Carver forces them from their home. To make ends meet, Dennis finds himself working for the most evil man he's ever met, and putting people through the same hell he experienced. It's a gripping and effective dramatization of the horrors from the recent housing crisis. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Talking About Real Estate
Valley market is on the move! Matt Freeman Courier Columnist It is always very informative to look at the previous year's numbers and statistics in any real estate market. Here in the Kern River Freeman Valley we have a very unique market, with some of the most unique property in all of California, and also some of the cheapest compared to the rest of the state. Currently the median home price for a home statewide is approx $476K. Here in the Kern Valley, it is $242K for a stick built home and $118K for a manufactured home per the Kern River Lake Isabella Multiple Listing Service. That is a whole lot cheaper than the rest of the state; you can by a lot of house up here for $476K. This week I want to get into the average sales figures for the past year compared to 2014 for the two largest market segments in the Kern Valley, which are the stick built homes and the manufactured homes. Both market segments combined make up the lion's share of property sold here in the Valley each year so watching the trends and changes in those segments is very interesting, and a great way to both peer into the past and predict the future, to a point at least. In total, the market here locally had a 13.5 percent rise in total sales volume in 2015 compared to 2014. That is great news! Between 2014
and 2015 stick built housing saw an increase in total sales volume of 4.5 percent, which is a good solid figure. Manufactured housing saw an increase of approx 27 percent during the same time, from $5.7 million to $7.3 million in total sales. From this data we can glean many things, and I will go into more of next week. But in short, here is what is happening with the market and here is what is not happening. Sales volume is up in both sectors, and in the market as a whole. This is great news, because the market is showing stability and health in the long term. The 2014 numbers were better than 2013, so this is three years now we have had a positive market volume sales trend. However, what is not happening in any significant amount is real estate pricing changes. An increase in total sales volume is not the same as an increase in total sales prices. We have not seen a significant increase in the average sale prices of either stick built homes and manufactured homes. Why is this? One simple reason: supply and demand. We have had an increase in total sales volume, but we have had a lot on the market so there is plenty to choose from. The one driving factor that affects the price of housing more than anything is supply and demand. Next week I will show you the how and why this economic principle affects our real estate here locally. Matt Freeman is a realtor with Freeman’s Lakeside Realty 760-379-5915 or 760-223-0880. His column is not intended to replace legal advice.
Dave Says
Investment or debt? Dave Ramsey Courier Columnist Dear Dave, I'd like to send my kids to a private Christian school, and they would begin classes the same month we'll finally Ramsey be out of debt. We would have to pay this out over the course of the school year, so would you consider this to be an investment or more debt? - Ed Dear Ed, I don't borrow money whether it's an investment or not. But lots of private schools have tuition plans where you don't have to borrow money, and you just make two or three payments during the academic year. I don't know if I would really call that a debt, because you can always take the child out of the school if you see you can't make the payment. Just make sure you carefully look over any contract involved and know what you're getting into before you sign up for the ride. You don't want to obligate yourself to money you don't have, especially when you've worked so hard to get out of debt. Just save up, and have a place in your budget for tuition. -Dave
Dear Dave, Do you recommend that people continue tithing and giving while getting out of debt? - Sarah Dear Sarah, If you're tithing, that would refer to you being a Christian or of the Jewish faith. To the best of my knowledge, those are the only two religions where tithing is taught as a part of the faith. The word literally means "a tenth," as in a tenth of your income. If you are an evangelical Christian, what does Scripture say? It says to take the tithe off the top before you do anything else. You keep doing it always, not from a legalistic perspective, but because it's part of God's instructions on the best way to live. It gives you a baseline for giving and generosity. Then, get yourself and your household cleaned up and in good financial shape before engaging in other acts of giving, which are called offerings. This is the normal process that Scripture outlines. But remember, God is crazy about you and loves you very much. When you give, it's the act of being unselfish and putting others first. -Dave Dave Ramsey is America's trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times bestselling books. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A gracious Lamb can learn more about a problem-filled situation than one who is openly suspicious of what could be happening. A friend might offer some welldirected advice. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Getting adjusted to an unexpected change might be difficult for the Bovine who prefers things to go according to plan. But help could come from a most welcome source. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This could be a good time to get a head start on those career-related plans. The sooner you check out the pluses and minuses, the sooner you can act on your information. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A personal situation you thought would no longer present a problem suddenly could produce some surprises. Try to sort things out with the help of trusted colleagues. LEO (July 23 to August 22) An upcoming move holds both anticipation and anxiety for Leos and Leonas who have some big decisions to make. Advice is plentiful, but it's up to you to decide which way you want to go. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone from a previous project could provide valuable guidance on how to handle a current problem, especially where it might involve a legal matter.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business situation presents some unexpected complications. But rather than try to handle them all at once, it would be best to deal with them one at a time. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You just might get what you want, despite the odds against it. In any event, be sure to thank all those people involved who believed in you and went to bat for you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Before you even hint at an accusation, remember that you'll have to prove what you say. So be sure you have what you need to back up your comments. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A romantic situation takes an unexpected turn that favors some Sea Goats, but causes others to reassess how they've been handling the relationship. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A surprise turn of events could unsettle the Water Bearer. But it also might help open up an entirely different way of working out an important matter. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A smoothly running operation could bump up against an obstacle. This is where your ability to assess situations and make adjustments can restore things to normal.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $149,741.71. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder's sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the opening bid may be less than the total debt. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. There was a station called "Gotta Eat" where high medium and low food cost choices were available including scenarios of eating out, whether fast food, coffee shop of fine restaurant. For those who had children in their scenario, there was a "Kiddy Care" table where formula, diaper, toys, clothing and childcare choices were made. At the entertainment table they made choices
such as movies, gym memberships, bowling, crafts, walking, vacations, travel abroad, golf, sporting events, picnics or staying home and playing board games. The transportation table was where the participants determined if they drove an old car, drove an SUV or mini-van, or took the bus. Some students found in their scenarios that they were going to have to take a second job. All the students were scored for their successes and everyone received a certificate worth $25 toward opening an account at AltaOne. The winners each received a $50 certificate.
