A wild west weekend of bribin’, bouncin’, dancin’, jumpin’, rockin’, drama, carnival ridin’, shoppin’, cookin’, eatin’, gun fightin’ and buckin’ good times
Michael Batelaan Courier Spotlight Your wallet and Isabella Lake might be on empty, but your glass will be always more than half full, thanks to the Kernville Chamber of Commerce and the Kern River Brewery. Yes, root beer, and maybe a cherry cream soda or two. That’s what is on tap at this year’s Whiskey Flat Days in Kernville. The Kernville Chamber of Commerce and Kernville’s Kern River Brewing Company have teamed up to offer these two libations as a fund raising event for the Chamber. During Whiskey Flat Days, $6 buys you a logoed acrylic mug filled with ether root beer or cherry cream soda. Refills are two dollars throughout the weekend while supplies last. The Kern River Brewing Company in Kernville has donated seven kegs of the soda toward the event. Each of the brewery’s special recipes are carfully brewed and carbinated locally over 2 to 3 days, about 15 gallons per keg. KRBC is Kernville’s first a n d only brewpub. This makes KRBC much more than just a restaurant. It’s an attraction in itself, serving seasonal guests and favorite beers and wines, appetizers, salads, burgers, brats, fish and more.

The Whiskey Flat Encampment continues to grow with new tent camps, structures, displays, demonstrations and and more than 100 re-enactors. “This year’s camp promises again to be a very unique, historically accurate experience for the whole family,” said Mike Woodward, producer of the Whiskey Flat encampment. “We even have a new surprise or two in mind for the new and repeat visitors.” The Encampment takes place Feb. 14 through 16, during Whiskey Flat Days. Camp events begin at noon on Friday, Feb. 14 and ends at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16. The Encampment is set up across from the rodeo grounds down in the flats beside the Kern River. As far as my opponent Rango Rocky Stone’s recent claim that Nickel and Dime Nicole is personally, along with others, involved in “an Evil Conspiracy to drain Isabella Lake.” I, Nickel and Dime Nicole, have widely stated, “That the whole conspiracy thing is just silly.” Sure, I keep a couple of gallon bottles of water for emergencies. And Money Bags Monica has said, “That it ain’t no more than Rango keeps under that hat of his.” But I’d like someone to tell me just where Wacko, I mean Rango, thinks I would be keeping all that water. It makes no sense. What I would like to know is if Rango and his tribe are so worried about our very serious water shortage, then why aren’t they out here making rain? You know, by doing one of those Indian Rain Dances? Money Bags Monica and I are known to dance all the time, and that gets all kinds of things stirred up, just not rain clouds." hen we last met, your next Whiskey Flat Mayor, "Rango" Rocky Stone and his trusted Sidekick "Woodsy Wally" had formed a posse of Legendary Lawmen, the likes of which had never been seen before! In a cloud of dust they headed East, hot on the trail of the "Evil Doers!" Those High Ranking Government Officials, Corrupt Bankers, Nickel & Dime Nicole and Money Bags Monica knew that they were no match for "Rango," "Woodsy" and their Posse of Elite Lawmen. Those "Evil Doers" disbanded, dispersed and disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again…The moral of the story: YOU DON'T WANT TO TANGO WITH "RANGO." Our heroes, "Rango" and "Woodsy" were last seen headed North over the Sierras in their 1864 model "Hydrator." What's a Hydrator, you ask? It's a "High Wheeled Bicycle coupled to a Hot Air Balloon, the perfect contraption for pedalin' into position and seedin' rain clouds! The Good and Decent people of Whiskey Flat can rest assured…The Clouds will be seeded, "Rango" will be elected, the Indians will dance, and the rains will come! Jack Duitsman Courier Columnist In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring ye ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he him- Duitsman self said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ - Acts 20:35 There is something so simple recorded in the above verse of Scripture, and yet in its simplicity, there arises a greater sense that at the same time there is a vastness that rivals the oceans within this same passage. See here the simplicity of the small lad who gave his meager lunch to the Savior, and at the same time embrace the magnitude of a multitude of some 5,000 people who were miraculously fed by the simple gift of a few loaves and a couple fish. Hear within the heartbeat of this invitation to embrace the heart of a giver the simplicity of the widow’s cruse of oil and near empty tin of flour, yet offered to the power of God through the prophet Elijah, simplicity was turned to a miraculous majesty that brought a bottomless nature to these elements that would sustain a family throughout a difficult period of drought. The simplicity comes from the attitude of heart that believes an open handed willingness to make anything and everything possessed
available to the power of God’s determination. The vastness belongs to the limitless nature of the Divine heart, and His capacity for creativity which knows no bounds. Listen as Barnes Notes on the New Testament waxes eloquently regarding the nature of Jesus’ invitation for His followers to be like Him where a heart of giving is concerned. “This is a sentiment truly great and noble. It is worthy of the Son of God. It is that on which he himself acted when he came to give pardon to the guilty, comfort to the disconsolate and the mourner, peace to the anxious sinner, sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, life to the dead, and heaven to the guilty and the lost. Acting on this, he gave his own tears to weep over human sorrows and human guilt; his own labors and toils to instruct and save man; his own life a sacrifice for sin on the cross. “Loving to give, he has freely given us all things. Loving to give, he delights in the same character in his followers, and seeks that they who have wealth, and strength and influence should be willing to give all to save the world. Imitating his great example, and complying with his command, the church shall yet learn more and more to give its wealth to bless the poor and needy; its sons and its daughters to bear the gospel to the benighted pagan; its undivided and constant efforts to save a lost world.” Jack Duitsman pastors Father’s Heart Foursquare Church in Kernville.

BLM plans Keyesville area recreation public workshop The Bakersfield Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management will host a public workshop Wednesday, Feb. 26, in Lake Isabella to solicit community input on management of public lands in the Keyesville area. The workshop will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kern River Valley Branch Library, 7054 Lake Isabella Blvd. Keyesville embraces the lower Kern west of Highway 155 and receives high levels of use. The planning area encompasses more than 7,000 acres of public land, extending north past Sawmill Road to Highway 155 above Wofford Heights. The BLM is seeking the help of the local community to develop specific management direction for the area. Specifically, the BLM wishes to solicit input from everyone with an interest in Keyesville regarding any concerns they may have and any opportunities they feel should be explored. This feedback will help guide management direction for the area. “We’re asking the public, starting with the residents of the Kern River Valley, to
provide their thoughts on how Keyesville should be managed,” said Gabriel Garcia, Bakersfield Field Office manager. “We’re looking for input on how to manage the various activities in Keyesville so that conflicts are minimized, resources are protected and visitors have a positive experience.” The workshop will include a short overview of the planning area, as well as a discussion of the management direction within the Proposed Bakersfield Resource Management Plan. These presentations will be followed by a session in which participants can identify noteworthy resource values, ongoing challenges to effective management and opportunities for future management. Feedback from the workshop will be used to identify potential solutions and specific management direction. For further information on the public workshop, contact Steve Larson at 661391-6099, email: slarson@blm.gov, Bakersfield Field Office, Bureau of Land Management, 3801 Pegasus Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93308.

Antler, Fin & Feather Report
Trout bite is good these days Mike Mencarini Courier Columnist I know a lot of you who fish the lake don’t spend much time fishing the coldest months. It’s understandable. For the most part, it’s Mencarini uncomfortable. The wind blows cold, it can be raining and the fish are in deep water, which eliminates most of the shoreline for catching them. There is a silver lining. The trout bite usually is very good during these months. The Department of Fish and Wildlife stocks the lake with a truck load of trout periodically. Without knowing the exact date of the last stocking, my best guess is it was some time in January. The reason I bring this to your attention is the trout bite is good these days. The best spots I can recommend are the main boat launch to the main dam, the point behind the Indian Center (go through Lake Patrol parking lot) the west side of Engineer’s Point (boat launch side) or the point at French Gulch Marina. Those fishing these spots
are mostly catching their limits. Crawlers and Power Bait with a garlic scent work well. I wish I could say the same for the crappie, but they have been on a different program of late. I am sure it has to do with the shad and where they are located. This time of year and with the lake water level extremely low, the shad are in the main channel, where the water tends to be the deepest. Those who fish the shoreline should get excited because the website for Fish and Wildlife says that there will be a plant of the lake sometime in the week of Feb. 16. Usually they stock about 1,000 pounds of catchable trout. The main boat launch is where they will be released. The upper Kern River from Riverside Park to the Power House should get stocked with an extra heavy load of trout since it is Whiskey Flats Days. The Kernville Hatchery does a great job in making fish available for the many fishermen that come for our annual midwinter event. Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and avid fisherman. For questions or comments you can reach him through the Kern River Couier.

Model 3-D movie By Sam Struckhoff Pick of the Week “Gravity” (PG-13) — Spiraling off into the dark void of space, two astronauts undergo a pulse-pounding struggle for survival as their odds of ever reaching Earth again plummet with each new obstacle. Sandra Bullock plays a medical officer on her first trip into outer space who is paired with a veteran astronaut, played by George Clooney. While working on the Hubble telescope, a patch of space debris cuts them off from the space shuttle and sends the pair careening into space. During its box-office run, “Gravity” attracted rave reviews from audiences and critics. Cinema purists have hailed it as a model for how 3-D filmmaking should be done. For us home-video audiences, the movie offers a tenacious survival drama that will leave you gasping for sweet, sweet oxygen. “Thor: The Dark World” (PG13) — Long ago, the Norse gods of Asgard banished some ancient evil dudes to a far-off dimension. Natalie Portman, while searching for a way to contact Thor, accidentally unleashes the sealed-away evil powers. Once again, the fate of the universe is in the brawny hands of Thor the thunder god (Chris Hemsworth). This time, however, Thor needs to recruit the reluctant aid of his evil brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the god of chaos and the villain of “The Avengers.”
Scene from “Gravity” While Hemsworth carried the first Thor film on his broad shoulders, this sequel is largely propped up by the caustic and sneering screen presence of Hiddleston. As Thor’s adopted brother and chief rival, he’s also the balancing point for the movie that allows it to make fun of itself. Audiences get to drink in the foamy, hammer-smashy battles, then wash it down with the refreshingly sour lemonade of Loki’s anti-hero. “Nebraska” (R) — A bitter old man and his disillusioned son take an eye-opening road trip from Missouri to Nebraska in this black-and-white dark comedy. Bruce Dern plays Woody Grant, a crusty Midwestern alcoholic who believes he’s won a magazine sweepstakes. His son, Dave (“SNL’s” Will Forte), agrees to take him on the road. The film gives a lot of consideration to the landscapes surrounding the minuscule drama; lots of wide open, underwhelming backdrops underscore the brief exchanges of dialogue and quiet realizations of missed opportunities. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Goings on at the Kern Valley Museum A lot is going on during Whiskey Flats Days at the Kern Valley Museum. The old Graham Brothers truck will be all decked out with boots, belles and bulls and will be in the parade. Stop by the museum and see the truck close up after the parade. Bring the kids. After the parade, children, 12 and under, and accompanied by an adult will receive a free gift; either a cowboy bandana, print slap bracelet or a western coloring set. There are 120 of these free gifts. When they’re gone, they're gone, so don’t wait too long. If you would like to have a chance to go to Morro Bay and live the life of leisure for a couple of days, then come by the museum and learn about our Morro Bay Get-Away for 2 drawing. We have a huge selection of unique items for sale in our gift shop and if you are interested in Old West history, stop by and see all the great exhibits during Whiskey Flats Days. (It’s likely not to open Saturday until after the parade.) Admission is free.

ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) Try to say as little as possible about the work you’re doing through the end of the month. Then you can make your announcement and accept your well-deserved plaudits. TAURUS (Apr. 20 to May 20) You face a more difficult challenge than you expected. But with that strong Taurean determination, you should be able to deal with it successfully by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Before you act on your “feelings” about that upcoming decision, it might be wise to do a little fact-checking first. You could be very much surprised by what you don’t find. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A recent workplace success can open some doors that were previously closed to you. On a personal level, expect to receive some important news from a longtime friend and colleague. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Put your wounded pride aside and do what you must to heal that misunderstanding before it takes a potentially irreversible turn and leaves you regretting the loss of a good friend. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) One way to kick a less-than-active social life into high gear or rebuild an outdated Rolodex file is to throw one of your well-
organized get-togethers for friends and associates. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Getting out of an obligation you didn’t really want to take on can be tricky. An honest explanation of the circumstances can help. Next time, pay more attention to your usually keen instincts. SCORPIO (Oct.23 to Nov. 21) Use your Scorpion logic to push for a no-nonsense approach to a perplexing situation. This could help keep present and potential problems from creating more confusion. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) A friend’s problem might take more time than you want to give. But staying with it once again proves the depth of your Sagittarian friendship and loyalty. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) You can benefit from an extra dose of self-confidence to unsettle your detractors, giving you the advantage of putting on a strong presentation of your position. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) You might want to ask a friend or relative for advice on an ongoing personal matter. But be careful not to give away information you might later wish you had kept secret. PISCES (Feb. 19 to Mar. 20) Use the weekend for a creativity break to help restore your spiritual energy. Once that’s done, you’ll be back and more than ready to tackle whatever challenge you need to face.

Showmen Continued from page 1 onymous with rodeo production. After an accident as a rodeo contestant in 1956, Rosser ended a promising career as a rodeo contestant and purchased the Flying U Rodeo Company. For more than 50 years, Rosser and his family have worked to make the Flying U one of the most successful stock contracting firms in professional rodeo. Most other rodeo promoters are just stock suppliers, Flying U rodeo is a rodeo production company. Rosser is 85 years old and still going strong. He brings a staff of 68 people to Kernville. He pro-
motes and produces the entire rodeo. This is his 58th year of returning to the Kern Valley with his show. Rodeo is show business as far as he is concerned. “We love Kernville. If it wasn’t for Kernville, we probablywouldn’t be in rodeo,” he said. According to Rosser, “You have to run the show, you can’t let the show run you. If you don’t keep the audience entertained, they will go somewhere else.” Over the past couple of years, some of the biggest names in bronc riding donned outrageous costumes and hopped aboard some of Flying U’s best bucking horses. The Rosser family lives
a life that revolves around professional rodeo. The family, Cotton and his wife, Karin, operate the Flying U and Cotton’s Cowboy Corral, a western ware store out of Marysville, CA. Both of the Rossers have pilot’s licenses and Cotton has served on the PRCA Board of Directors. Life on the rodeo trail has not been easy, but he manages to make a living doing what he loves and priding himself living the life of a cowboy. Rosser and the Flying U Rodeo Company in the Whiskey Flat Daze Rodeo, can be seen both Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. at the John E. McNally Arena.

There will be a church service at the Old West Church on Sunday at 10 a.m. Stories will be acted out by real actors and actresses showing how miners, cowboys and outlaws got along (or didn’t) in the West. There will be actual building of the huts from natural native resources, displays and information on local Native Americans.
