Stand SUP event - Riverside Park is the venue for many of the Kern River Festival 50th year whitewater events.

Dana Heins-Gelder Courier Must do The Kern River Festival, one of the nation's premier whitewater festivals, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this coming April 19 and 20. It draws athletes and spectators from all over the region and has frequently served as a regional qualifier for the U.S. national kayak slalom team. Kayakers and Stand-Up Boarders come to compete in a number of activities including: the Extreme Downriver Kayak Race, Stand-up Paddler, or SUP Down-river Race, the Tom Johnson Slalom Classic, and Boater and

Boarder-Cross races. The community is invited to participate or to cheer the racers from the shore at Riverside Park throughout the weekend. In fact, during Sunday morning's triathlon a $25 gift card is awarded to the spectator with the funniest, cleverest, or most encouraging sign along the triathlon route. The Hooligan Raft Parade and the Kern River Festival Triathlon draw increasing participation from the community each year and this year a free Children's Sidewalk Art Contest so Kern Valley youth can dress-up Riverside Parks' new sidewalks! With most of the weekend's activities held

in Riverside Park in downtown Kernville, contestants and spectators enjoy catching up with friends and competitors from as far away as Oregon, Idaho, Colorado and Arizona. Vendor booths, displays, gear swaps and a silent auction benefitting the Kern Valley River Council take place throughout the weekend. On Saturday evening, there is a barbeque served up by Sierra Gateway's Sierra Smoker, Kern River Brewing Company's Beer Garden, and a Wine Bar with wines donated by the Sierra Gateway Store. The evening is augmented with live music under

the stars performed by one of the area's favorite bands, Out of the Blue. The entire community is welcome to join in the evening's events and in the silent auction. Last year was the first Kern River Festival Triathlon and it was an unqualified success. It consists of an 8 mile bike ride, a 2.2 mile run and ends with a 2 mile river paddle. The event starts and ends in Riverside Park. Join in on all or part of the 50th Annual Kern River Festival and Triathlon. It is an exciting and fun weekend of activities. Last Friday, Kern County recognized Child Abuse Preven-tion Awareness Month in the Kern Valley and remembered the 38 children lost in Kern County last year with a National Children's Memorial flag raising ceremony at the Department of Human Services in Lake Isabella. Are campsites planned in your backyard? If you've heard about the recent BLM meetings regarding the "Keyesville" recreation area, and thought that this doesn't concern you, think again. According to the BLM, this area includes the entire area west of 155 from Pearl Harbor Drive to Evans Road. That's right - if you live above Hungry Gulch, on Sawmill Road, in Juniper Highlands or on Old State Road, you are in the Keyesville recreation area! And as revealed at the BLM meeting on 4/9/2014, this area is "ripe with opportunity" - for new trails, recreational mining, and dispersed camping! Dispersed camping means that folks can just set up camp on BLM land anywhere they like, including right next to your property, or maybe actually on your property if they don't know what they are doing. The BLM has one ranger for the Kern County area, so I'm guessing enforcement of regulations is going to be a bit sketchy. Who is going to make sure all these dispersed campers don't have illegal campfires? The BLM is showing a blatant disregard for the safety of residents by opening these neighborhoods to camping. When visitors come to share a few hours with us here in our beautiful valley they usually drive up using the spectacular Kern Canyon that Middleworth runs from Bakersfield to our Valley. It’s a trip they never forget and which a few never return to visit again. With that in mind I decided that on one of my many trips to Bakersfield (as a passenger), I would really notice that canyon road and be brutally honest on what the trip is really like. First I noticed the drive up from Bakersfield. I have to admit the first mile heading north gets your attention. After winding this narrow passage and noting how close northand south-bound vehicles pass each other, I am prepared for most anything I might encounter. Well almost. As a north-bound passenger, I am right next to the canyon wall and am able to observe firsthand the enormous boulders hanging from and sticking out of the mountain side. I have been assured that very few of them fall to the road bed and that the odds of the few that do fall will ever hit you are very good. If you are a new driver to the road you will note the cars that quickly gather behind you are in more of a hurry than you are. The best thing to do is find a turnout and get in there

Museum to Spotlight Local Filmmaker Kernville resident Chuck Barbee will be presenting his highly acclaimed motion picture "Rankin Ranch: An American Story". This 80 minute documentary details the history of the 31,000 acre farm and ranch operation. Beginning in 1850 with the migration of the Rankin and Lightner families, to today's ranching, farming and guest facilities. A toot of the horn or digital wave of the ring finger depends on you. A lot of cars will stop at the beautiful ivy covered spring for a drink of water. Except it is not a spring, but is leakage of untreated river water from the flume high up the hillside. There is 17 miles of this winding road until you reach 13 miles of freeway. Here is a warning. After traveling behind a truck pulling a camp trailer at a speed of 20 miles per hour, you will be tempted to exceed the freeway’s posted speed of 60 mph. I can assure you that there is an abundant number of CHP officers who will help you slow down. Going down the canyon, the road is exciting also. This time if you are a passenger, you will have a chance to see the spectacular Kern River about 500 feet directly below you. The road department has placed barriers to keep your driver from going over the side. Few of them are in places I think they should be and I try not to look toward the river and keep my eyes straight ahead. To be fair, we travel the canyon at least once a week and find it beautiful and easy to travel. We pull over for the crazies and relax. The guy doing the crazy driving won’t get there much sooner and maybe not at all. Don’t let that be you! Happy Canyon driving!

Denial - 2 Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist In my March 21 column, I discussed a kind of denial, which fails to acknowledge a need for God’s forgiveness and imagines an ability to please Schlensker God on one’s own. This denial of total self-deficiency before God, springing from a person’s egotism and pride, amounts to a selfrighteousness fantasy, which is completely dispelled and destroyed by God’s demand for perfection from His creatures, and His assertion that “there is not a righteous man on earth who continually does good and who never sins” (Ecclesiastes 7:20). There’s another kind of denial, though, which is more-or-less the opposite kind of denial, but equally devastating. This denial imagines that “What I have done or how I have been is way too bad to be forgiven. I am, therefore, an unforgivable sinner!” And usually going along with that is an inability to forgive one’s-self. This denial rejects God’s ability to forgive any and all sin, even though God said through the prophet, Jeremiah, “I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more” (Jeremiah 31:34). What that denial amounts to is a belief that there is an infraction, which God cannot forgive. Actually, there is one so-called

unforgivable sin. It’s called the “sin against the Holy Spirit” (Mark 3:29). That sin rejects God’s forgiveness when one has become aware of its all-encompassing nature, saying, if effect, “God I know what You are offering. No thanks!” However, if a person does not reject God’s grace and mercy, and trusts Jesus for forgiveness, His forgiveness is full and free! That’s because God said so, and His words are the same ones, which spoke the Universe into existence! They are the ultimate power and truth. God said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved” (Acts 16:31), and you cannot be saved unless you are forgiven! To “believe” is simply to trust that Jesus’ death on the cross paid the penalty price for all of our sins and brought us righteousness in God’s sight through faith in Him, for “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16). This self-effacing denial of God’s ability to forgive ends, like the other self-righteous denial, at the foot of the cross on Calvary, where Jesus died for the sins of the world, in order that we might lay down all of our doubts and apprehensions and simply trust Him for our forgiveness, righteousness, eternal life and strength for living daily for Him. Derby results reported hook, line and sinker Michael Batelaan Courier Release With 2,578 registered people fishing, the Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce has announced the 25th Annual Isabella Lake Fishing Derby results. And despite the slightly smaller lake this year, the trout were successful in eluding the estimated 4,000 or more fish hooks. Only 30 fish were caught during the three-day derby yielding a total of $2,750 in prize money. Equal to a little more than one fisherman on the dollar. Those taking home there limit in prize monies were Sergio Hinojosa Jr. of Lancaster, who hooked the $500 early registration prize. The travel trailer raffle was taken by Debra Wiruth of Kernville. The longest trout winners were: 1st, Thomas Amaro of Oxnard, $1,000; 2nd, Michael Parra of Whittier, $500; 3rd, Camryn Troller of Lake Isabella, $250, and 4th, Martin Lang of Granada Hills, at $200.

That contest was also open to age 12 and under. Pick of the Week “The Rocket” (unrated) — Ahlo is a 10-year-old Laotian boy who must be bad luck. He was born a twin, but his brother did not survive -- an ill omen, as superstition says that one twin will be cursed and the other blessed. One day, Ahlo’s village receives news that they have to leave their land because it will be flooded to make the reservoir for a new dam. The boy decides he’s going to re-write his fate -- he’s going to enter a rocket-building contest and win. “The Rocket” tells a unique, transporting story. “Gimme Shelter” (PG-13) — A tattooed teen named Apple (Vanessa Hudgens) runs away from her abusive addict mother (Rosario Dawson), and finds a new set of hardships ahead of her. If you like your asparagus well done, reduce heat and cook an additional 10 minutes. Melt chocolate chips over hot water until just soft. Add peanut butter to melted chocolate, thoroughly mix, then add to shredded wheat. Put one tablespoon mixture on waxed paper - shape into nest and chill. Fill with jelly beans makes approximately 18 nests.

As a columnist, there is no true good time to take a vacation. The presses need to roll. The last few weeks, this column was Thal written in advance of my planned one month vacation to Australia and New Zealand. Before leaving, Courier editor and publisher, Michael Batelaan asked me to look into the healthcare system in Australia. As my regular readers know, I (unfortunately) land up using and reporting on healthcare sometimes on a very personal level. So, I had a very brief encounter with healthcare. That guy sitting a few rows behind us on the flight from Los Angeles to New Zealand coughed all through the night. I got his, or somebody else's bug. So, during my first few days, I too was having breathing and coughing issues. Not to spoil our tour, I contacted the hotel's front desk and requested a physician. In less than 45 minutes later, Dr. Birman arrived at my hotel room. He gave me an examination and wrote prescriptions for a really good cough medicine, antibiotics and steroids. I was feeling better within a few days, and had no problem keeping up with the others

on our three week tour. Dr. Birman told me I was lucky that all I needed was this treatment. Apparently the hospitals are full and hard to access. Over all, I had a good impression of their system, though over the next few weeks, in speaking with locals, there is a "not so good" reaction to my quiries. Now, back in my office, I hit the Internet to learn more about Australia's "Medicare" program. That is what they call their government run healthcare system. The government owns the hospitals and most Australians belong to this system, for which they pay 1.5% of their income to support it. Additional revenue comes from general funds as well as an additional 1% levy imposed on high income earners without private health insurance. There is a network of private hospitals and physicians available, and higher income people are encouraged to join this system. However, the government runs "Medibank" which is the largest health insurer having about a 30% share of the private marketplace. Its existence is to keep premium costs down, forcing the competition of other private plans to keep their premiums in check.
