The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association has announced that taxpayers will begin receiving the next round of fire tax bills in March with those living in counties beginning with the letter A receiving their bills first. These bills will continue to come until such a point as the lawsuit is resolved in their favor. While lawsuits take a long time, HJTA believes the State’s lawyers are purposely using delay tactics in the lawsuit so that they can keep collecting this unfair tax. Rather than respond to the concerns that the tax was passed illegally in violation of Prop 13, the State continues to file “demurrers,” which are legal arguments that the lawsuit is not allowed. Kamala Harris, California’s Attorney General, runs the State’s legal office and is an elected official accountable to you as a citizen. While the judge may ultimately rule for either party, HJTA wants you to tell the Attorney General that hundreds of thousands of rural Californians affected by the fire tax at least deserve to have their day in court. You can reach the Attorney General by phone at 916-445-9555 or go on line to fill out the comment form. When you receive your bill, you can file the Petition for Redetermination on FireTaxProtest.org again even if you have already filed it in previous years. Filing the Petition for Redetermination annually is the safest way of ensuring your refund should HJTA prevail.

Michael Batelaan Courier Buzz Kernville Chamber of Commerce president Cheryl Borthick said that this year's 57th annual Whiskey Flat Days was the best ever, thanks to the great weather and the huge turnout estimated at 50,000 people. The parade on Saturday morning was one of the biggest with clowns,

gunfights, horses, dogs, floats, heroes and you name it. "Rango" Rocky Stone became the first ever Native American Whiskey Flat honorary mayor, having raised $30,188, which was one of the highest dollar amounts ever raised by a mayor candidate. Stone had his sidekick "Woodsey Wally" helping him along with the

Kern Valley 4H and the entire Tubatulabal tribe. Nickel and Dime Nicole and her sidekick "Moneybags Monica" had very little help, but still raised more than $9,000. This money raised all will stay right in the Kern Valley helping the charities the candidates selected as well as the Kernville Chamber in putting on the 58th Whiskey Flat Days.

Helicopter 407

Pair hoisted to safety Kern County Fire Courier Release On Thursday, Feb. 13 at approximately 8 p.m., the Kern County Fire Department received a call from Kern County Sheriff’s Office’s Search and Rescue to perform a hoist rescue of two hikers who had gone off trail and were lost in a drainage near Harley Mountain in Kernville. KCSO’s Air 1 located the hikers, and due to darkness, dropped Chem sticks to the hikers to assist KCFD’s Helicopter 407 in making contact for the rescue. Using night vision goggles, Kern County Fire Department’s Helicopter 407 and crew were able to locate the hikers. They then lowered one firefighter down to prepare both hikers for hoist. Both hikers were safely hoisted into the helicopter and transported to Kernville airport uninjured.

Rango’s dust has settled In last week’s editorial section, Nickel & Dime Nicole stated the conspiracy to drain Isabella Lake and create a desert oasis at China Lake was “just silly.” In light of the preponderance of evidence uncovered by “Rango” Rocky Stone, just how naïve or blonde can she be? If Nickel & Dime hasn’t noticed our dwindling lake level, she should get the doc to check her “depth perception.” Her statement only served to confirm that she was so mired in this conspiracy that she had no other choice than to deny its very existence. The more troubling issue was Nickel & Dime’s attempt to drag Rango’s family into the fray! Her comments about “the tribe” resulted in a “war dance,” not a “rain dance.” Nickel & Dime Nicole and Money Bags Monica found themselves plucking arrows out of each others backsides! “Wavin Goodbye” Nicole and “Packin Her Bags” Monica did get out of town on the Sunday afternoon stage. I beleve it was the “3:10 to Yuma.” Rango did get elected mayor of Whiskey Flat, Woodsy Wally is your new sheriff, the Indians did dance and the rains will come… Every town needs a hero and every story deserves a happy ending. “Rango” Rocky Stone Whiskey Flat Mayor

Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist Being a little more “old school,” as we moved into the so-called postmodern era, it came to really annoy me when one of my children Schlensker or students (during my years as a teacher) would throw up their hands and say, “Whatever!” Now there are, to be sure, some instances when a particular issue really matters very little, if at all. I’ve heard folks say, in situations like that, “six of one, half dozen of the other.” In that case, a “whatever” response might be appropriate. However, when I’ve asked a significant question or expressed a concern or communicated an opinion, and there comes an eyerolling, head-turning, hand-raising, disdainful, over-acted response of “Whatever,” I am distinctly unplussed. A “Whatever” attitude calls into question what is valuable and worthwhile, it’s detrimental to serious analytical thinking, and it reveals a mindset of indifference and suggests a position of disrespect. And I do not like to be at the receiving end of such stuff. Do you? I suppose if we are brutally honest with ourselves, though, we’d all have to admit that we’ve

been guilty from time to time taking a “Whatever” attitude toward a question, an issue or a person which/who deserved a more thoughtful and considerate reaction from us, even if we didn’t actually say, “Whatever!” We can be thankful that although each of us is so miniscule in the grand scheme of the cosmos, God is mindful of every one of us! To and about those who trust in Him, God says in Isaiah 43:1-7, “thus says the LORD, your Creator, ... who formed you, ... Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine! ... I will be with you; ... For I am the LORD your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior; ... you are precious in My sight, ... you are honored and I love you, ... Do not fear, for I am with you.” Now that’s a far cry from “Whatever!” In spite of the fact that we do not deserve to be known, loved or even noticed by God, St. Paul encourages us by assuring us that, “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). And that is just how opposite of “Whatever” which is what God’s attitude toward us is. The great news is that you and I actually matter to God!

Guaranteed classic status By Sam Struckhoff Pick of the Week “12 Years a Slave” (R) — Solomon Northup was an accomplished violinist who had a relatively comfortable life with his wife and children, living in Saratoga Springs, NY, in the 1800s. He was a free black man, born free in the north. This movie, based on Northup’s memoirs, begins with an establishing scene of him working on a plantation after he was kidnapped, shipped south and sold as a slave. The film already is guaranteed classic status. As Northup, Chiwetel Ejiofor musters bottomless pain and disbelief without going over the edge. Director Steve McQueen manages a fine balance between the darkness of human villainy and the beauty of world around them. “Hours” (PG-13) — Nolan (Paul Walker) and his wife Abigail (Genesis Rodriguez) rush to a New Orleans hospital because of complications with her pregnancy. In a short span, Nolan loses his wife and is presented with his newborn daughter -- who will require a respirator for the next 48 hours. Then Hurricane Katrina shows up. Then go the lights. Then the hospital is abandoned. Then there goes the rule of law. With the recent loss of Paul Walker in a car accident, it’s intriguing see how the leading

man of the “Fast & Furious” franchise could support a different kind of on-screen tension. The movie takes you for a ride, with Walker behind the metaphorical wheel, but this isn’t a full-throttle thriller. Walker balances grief and joy and shock and the will to fight. “Girl Rising” (PG-13) — This is a collection stories from young women around the world that are processed, acted out, filmed professionally and animated with little flourishes. The global storytelling jumps from topic to topic, continent to continent, but a few common threads exist. Stories include an account by a Haitian girl who defiantly attended school after the earthquake, even though her family could no longer afford the tuition. A host of celebrity voiceovers and visualized statistics can make things a little distracted. Still, it’s a moving and valuable study of the will of girls to find their place in the world despite adversity. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.
