Michael Batelaan Courier Spotlight This Saturday, February 28, the Kern Valley Hospital Foundation presents the 17th Annual Jeanette RogersErickson Heart Walk 2015. Just about everyone in the Kern Valley who has money to raise for a group, or who wants to help the Foundation raise money, participates in this event. Each group creates one or more teams of five walkers, and designates one of them as Team Manager. The Team Manager is responsible to arrive at the Walk between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. to register and sign in at the Kern Valley High School Track. If it rains, the event will be moved into the Wallace Middle School Gym. The actual walk begins at 9 a.m. Traditionally, breakfast treats including Hodel's famous cinnamon rolls are available before the walk. There is usually water and oranges available during the walk and the walk ends with a delicious and healthy lunch at 10:30 a.m. Non-walkers may purchase lunch for $5. There is an entry fee of $50 per team; or single walkers can participate for $10. The entry fees include lunch. Groups are encouraged to collect additional donation money and then have the option of splitting the donations half to the Hospital Foundation and half to the charity of their choice.

Hospital supported by strong foundation Michael Batelaan Courier Profile The Kern Valley Hospital Foundation is a nonprofit, public benefit corporation with the mission of providing Kern Valley Hospital with financial support by funding programs that will have a positive impact on patients and employees of the Kern Valley Healthcare District, therefore the community. They have provided modern, state-of-the art equipment to insure the finest healthcare possible for the residents and visitors of the Kern Valley. The all-volunteer Hospital Foundation identifies and develops projects, raises money to support those projects, and carefully manages the endowed funds entrusted to the Foundation. It offers contributors a multifaceted program of gift opportunities and ways to give. One such program is the 'Tree of Life' and is located in the Hospital lobby providing a permanent symbol of giving. The leaves on this tree represent gifts of $200 or more. A leaf or a stone is inscribed usually in remembrance of a family member, and placed on the wall. Another program the Foundation offers is the opportunity to make a 'Testamentary

parcel of land, stocks or bonds, or personal property such as jewelry, art and the like. Some individuals choose to leave a portion of their assets

Auxiliary right arm of Hospital District operations The Kern Valley Healthcare District Hospital Auxiliary is a non-profit all volunteer organization that works tirelessly on behalf of the KVHD. The Auxiliary, or as we fondly call them "Pink Ladies" and "Blue Men," operate the Kern Valley Hospital Gift Shop located in the lobby of the hospital in Mt. Mesa, as well as the Kern Valley Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store located on Lake Isabella Blvd. Most of the funding to purchase new equipment for the hospital comes from our

Auxiliary; they are a dedicated group providing state-of-the-art equipment for the KVHD. In the hospital the Auxiliary volunteers help with a range of duties like writing or reading letters for patents, filling ice buckets, filing for offices, running errands for personnel/management and greeting visitors while working the information desk located in the lobby. Without community support of the Gift Shop and the Thrift Store, their goals could not be met. More volunteers are always needed. You may pick up an application today at the Thrift Store. The cost of Membership is $15 and meets once a month at the Senior Center every second Wednesday at 1 p.m.

rather than a specific amount. The Kern Valley Hospital Foundation also is the organization that coordinates the Community Health Fairs and its only fundraiser of the year is The Jeanette RogersErickson Heart Walk, which is now in its 17th year. Each year the community enthusiastically supports the Jeanette RogersErickson Heart Walk, which brings in anywhere from $9000 to $15,000 in donations. You are welcome to attend the Foundation meetings anytime, they meet once a month, every third Wednesday in the Administrative Conference room at the Hospital. Membership in the Kern Valley Hospital Foundation is only $20 each year per family and $50 for businesses. Just this month the Auxiliary and the Foundation helped purchase a new transport van for the Skilled Nursing Facility Residents with a $10,000 donation. This new van can seat six, including two wheelchairs. Residents can now be transported in a clean safe manner to and from their doctor visits and staff can take them on outings in the community. As a community it is vital that we continue to support both of these organizations.

The Museum received the lot last year as a generous donation from Steve and Jadwiga Markoff. The Society plans to construct a 1700 sq. ft. storage facility. The building will be used to house the numerous books and artifacts that are currently stored off site. It is the intention to have these items close to the museum to allow for easy transfer to accommodate changing exhibits in the museum. Preliminary plans have been developed and several local contractors have helped, giving their valuable input. Fund raising efforts have already been discussed and more information will be forthcoming. The preliminary drawing can be seen at the museum.
Tax assistance offered Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is available Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lake Isabella branch library, 7054 Lake Isabella Blvd. Lake Isabella.
Bedtime Math equals sweet dreams Did you know that the top 15 highest-paying jobs all involve math skills? Early math skills are vital to students’ success and a recent study shows that American students ranked 25th out of 34 industrialized countries in mathematics. To help reverse the trend, the Kern River Valley Branch Library in Lake Isabella will be hosting a new program, Bedtime Math on Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m. Children are encouraged to come dressed in their pajamas and have fun with math while working on solving tangram puzzles, completing wacky math problems and even creating their own dominoes. This fun program is geared towards children ages 6 to 12 and will help children fall in love with numbers so they can handle the math in real life. For more information, contact the KRV Branch at 760-549-2083.
Driver Safety Program Scheduled The Next AARP Driver Safety Program will be held Tuesday, March 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene in Lake Isabella, 2931 Erskine Creek Road. Participants must attend the entire day. The course does not involve driving, but does emphasize safe driving procedures for older drivers. In California, a certificate of course completion usually entitles the participant to a reduction in their auto insurance for three years following the date of the class. All materials and workbooks have been recently updated and include the latest driving information. To learn more, or to enroll, call instructor Gene Verbeet at 760-417-0579. Fees are $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Class size is limited and time is short, so call today.
Senior outreach to discuss issues and services The Volunteer Senior Outreach program, a program serving senior citizens in the Kern River Valley, is holding a community meeting and would like you to join them for a cup of coffee and refreshments to discuss issues and services for the senior population in our community. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 17 at 10 a.m. at the Kern River Valley Veterans/Senior Center, 6405 Lake Isabella Blvd. Lake Isabella. This program is sponsored by Kern County Mental Health, Kern County Aging and Adult Services and College Community Services, Inc. For additional information, contact Cindy Brown at 760-379-3412.

National Day of Prayer observed William Blanton Courier Contributor Tuesday, Feb. 24 was the National Day of Prayer. Here is one pastor’s contribution: “Let the churches join and pray together to pray for Christian liberty in our nation. “Our founders established freedom of religion, it’s in our constitution but not in practice. “Daily, we are losing religious freedom. America was a nation built on Christian Biblical principles. “History holds true our religious freedom and liberty. However, every day, month after month, somewhere in our great country the enemy of our soul chips away at religious freedom.

“The church must begin to stand and hold to what God created in America. Prayer is the answer. Now is the time to hold to Gods Biblical principles. “We, as the church, stand now or lose everything America was founded on. “If you don’t use it (the Bible) you lose it (freedom in Christ Jesus). “May God Bless His Church and for the peace of JerUSAlem. “May the whole church come together on this year’s National day of Prayerand pray.” William Blanton, is Pastor, Chairman The Salvation Army, Lake Isabella Service Extension 760-379-4600 and the Community Christian Service Center 760-379-5100 6105 Lake Isabella Bl., P.O. Message of faith
No evil? Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist You have probably seen that old sculpture of those three monkeys sitting together depicting the sanctified admonition to “See no evil. Hear no Schlensker evil. Speak no evil.” Now that suggests that evil is some real, entity. And if evil is some real, substantial entity, then legitimate questions would be, “Where did evil come from?” “What was its origin?” A Christian apologist deals cleverly and effectively with those questions with this story. A skeptical philosophy professor, eager to lay the blame for evil at the doorstep of heaven, challenged his class by asserting, “If God is the Creator of everything, then God, Himself, must be the author of evil.” A sharp, God-fearing student responded to the professor’s challenge, “Sir, there is no such thing as evil. Therefore, God could not have created it.” The professor, surprised and indignant, asked, “What planet are you from? Just look around you, read a newspaper, listen to the news.” He addressed the class, “Is there anybody else here, who thinks there’s no such thing as evil?” No hands went up. “Well then, sir,” the student continued, “Do you think there’s such a thing as dark?” “Certainly,” the professor smiled confidently, “that’s a no-brainer!”
“So, you must believe that if you want to reduce the brightness of a room, you just add in some dark to make it less light. Right?” (Muted snickersfrom the class). “So,” the professor recognizes, “I think you are suggesting that darkness is the absence of light.” “Precisely, sir.,” the student replied. “And if I might be so bold, do you believe in the existence of cold?” “Of course, I do, the professor said. “That’s why we have coats and jackets hanging on our chairs.” “Do you believe in the notion of socalled absolute zero?” the professor was asked. “Certainly,” he replied. “Any educated person knows it’s an established scientific fact. It’s the lowest possible temperature.” “Well, sir,” the student continued, “I submit then, that there can be no such thing as cold. Otherwise there could be no absolute zero, for if there were such an entity as cold, we could just add a little more of it to an object at absolute zero and make its temperature even lower. Sir, there is no cold. What we call cold is simply the absence of heat. What we call dark is simply the absence of light, and what we call evil is nothing more than the absence of God.” There is, indeed, plenty of evil in the world, but it is not of God. It demonstrates that Satan is around and active (al-be-he damned) and is allowed by God to wreak a little havoc, while God remains the ultimate good and the insuperable power. Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella.

Send-off to the historical goofballs Sam Struckhoff Courier Contributor
PICKS OF THE WEEK “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” (PG) -- The kooky museum figures who come to life at night are in trouble -- their magic spell is fading and they have to go on a cross-continental adventure to fix it! This third installment in the Ben Stiller action-comedy for kids takes guard Larry (Stiller) to London with his crew of animated exhibits -notably Teddy Rosevelt (Robin Williams); Octavius, the tiny centurion (Steve Coogan); and Jedidiah, the tiny cowboy (Owen Wilson). The movie is (supposedly) the last one in the series, and revs up audience-interest early on with the change of scenery and the sense of urgency in the plot. Without a whole lot left in the tank for these characters, the movie goes for a kind sendoff to the historical goofballs “Listen Up Philip” (R) -- Philip’s soon-to-be released book will surely rocket him to the top of the literary world, landing him high among the geniuses. He’s a brilliant success, and it’s frustrating that nobody has realized it yet. Jason Schwartzman plays the self-absorbed author, who ditches his girlfriend (Elizabeth Moss) to spend time on himself at a country home owned by his mentor (Johnathan Pryce). This protagonist is just so unlikable, that by the end you’ll wonder how you sympathized with him in the first place. Still, it’s a fun sort of dark comedy.
Robin Williams in “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” “The Liberator” (R) -- This Venezuelan historical epic chronicles the campaigns of Simon Bolivar, the revolutionary who fought against Spanish rule in South America. History buffs and those hoping for a nuanced character will be disappointed by the flat portrayal of Bolivar as a dashing and determined national hero. Edgar Ramirez has a fine track record playing complex and powerful characters in “Che” and “Carlos,” but the script and direction of this flick veers strictly for the interpretation. “Wolfcop” (R) -- Sheriff Lou Garou (Leo Farfard) is a hard-drinking small-town lawman who has some terrible self-control issues. Wild and crazy demons give old Lou the curse of lycanthropy -- turning the hopeless drunk into a night-prowling werewolf of justice. With his redneck sidekick, Wolfcop doesn’t just take a bite out of crime, he rips crime into bite-size chunks. Instead of trying to be utterly terrible and hoping you’ll laugh, this obviously-in-poor-taste actually has a sense of humor and makes some good use of it. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Health Insurance Matters
Avoid the tax penalty Harry P. Thal Courier Columnist Apparently everyone in the country doesn’t subscribe to the Courier. I have been warning readers of the tax penalty for several years. Now, tax preparers Thal and CPAs are finding their clients are shocked when they are preparing their 2014 tax returns. Those who did not have health insurance are either seeing anticipated tax refunds reduced, or in many cases, they owe money to the IRS. Last Friday, Peter Lee, executive director of Covered California, announced “a special enrollment opportunity for consumers who did not know or understand there was a tax penalty for being uninsured in 2014 or who learned they face a penalty for 2015.” Lee went on to say, “For the first time, health care and taxes now are linked arm in arm. The law requires everyone to be insured, and if you’re not, you may face a significant financial penalty when you file your taxes this year.” The new tax penalty for being uninsured - known as the “shared responsibility payment” - motivated many consumers to purchase insurance this year during the Nov. 15 to Feb. 15 open-enrollment period via Covered California. Unfortunately, many people who are supposed to purchase insurance may be unaware
of the penalty and surprised when they go to their tax preparation professional for help. “We don’t want anyone to feel blindsided by the shared responsibility payment,” Lee said. “That’s why we are establishing this limited-time special-enrollment that builds on the broader availability of coverage for Californians who have a change of circumstance making them eligible outside of open enrollment. If you didn’t realize the tax consequences of not having insurance, you can enroll in a Covered California plan starting on Monday, Feb. 23 until April 30.” You will be paying the penalty for every month uninsured, so it is very prudent not to wait until the last minute to enroll. What the tax preparer may not be telling clients is that the penalty in 2016 for this year’s earnings (2015) will nearly double the current penalty, and it will increase again the following year.
