Theft of skate park donations condemned To the two scumbags who stole the skate park donations from the jar at the Mt. Mesa Shell, you will be identified. Your pictures are being circulated through social media. I call you scumbags because the money you stole was to go toward building a skate park in Lake Isabella. Our youth need a place where they can ride their wheels and you have just made the fund-raising process longer. I hope your conscience bothers you because of what you did. Karene R. Contact 178 Fellow Travelers Dear Editor Batelaan: Thank you for printing the article in the Courier entitled "Review traffic issues" December 25, 2015 and for providing me today with copies of the Courier published December 18 and 25. My husband, Don Morrison, and I were out of town when those editions were published. Unfortunately, there was an incorrect telephone number submitted to you with the "Special to the Courier" article by Rod Middleworth on the front page of the December 25th issue. It should have read: "Program chairpersons of community groups who would like to have a presentation concerning safety on Highway 178, please contact Don Morrison at 661-771-6418." We would also like you to add the following: "In the event that readers would like to join "178 Fellow Travelers", they can also call that number to be added to the email list." It is important to us that we get the message on safety precautions that drivers in our community can take now since any safety improvements or changes to Highway 178 itself will take varying amounts of time to accomplish. Thank you, Mr. Batelaan, for your support. Don Morrison, President Jacqueline Morgan, Community Outreach 178 Fellow Travelers
With your help, Snip & Tip program will resume Friends Foundation's KRV Snip & Tip program for feral cats began 2015 with a planning meeting at the Coffee Mill Café where teams were formed, materials distributed, and discussion about when the weather will allow us to get back to our TNR procedures. As mentioned here: gofundme.com/krvsnipntip, we began trapping the first week in December and completed TNR procedures for 19 cats before the holidays and wet weather began. Weather permitting, we will continue where we left off in Lake Isabella, then move to Bodfish, etc., until we've covered the entire Valley. Our Community Outreach Teams will be contacting owners/caretakers to answer their questions and fill out paperwork as we get closer to working in their neighborhood. Donations have been slow coming in. We thank the local businesses and newspapers that have contributed, but there are so many more that we have not heard from. TNR fees increased in 2016 to $60/cat, so please realize that each intact cat will multiply until they are in EVERY neighborhood in our valley. Intact cats bring nuisance and unhealthy behaviors, heartbreak for caretakers who watch them suffer and die, and diseases that could spread throughout our beautiful valley, plus place a heavy burden on our shelter system. The choice is, fix it now or fix a bigger problem later! Please help! All tax-deductible donations are greatly appreciated! Barbara Andrade, Board Member, Organizer KRV Snip & Tip for Feral/Community Cats Friends of the Kern County Animal Shelters Foundation

February is Safely Surrender Baby Awareness Month For most people, the birth of a child is a happy occasion celebrated with family and friends. But for some women, childbirth becomes a crisis - and the decisions made following an infant's birth can be a matter of life or death for the child. The Safely Surrendered Baby Law responds to the situation of newborn infant deaths due to abandonment in unsafe locations. First signed into law in January 2001, the Safely Surrendered Baby Law became permanent in January 2006. The law's intent is to save the lives of newborn infants at risk of abandonment by encouraging parents or persons with lawful custody to safely surrender the infant within 72 hours of birth, with no questions asked. The law exists so that these infants will not be harmed because the mother abandons them, or fails to provide them with care, sometimes leaving them to die. 55 babies have been safely surrendered in Kern County since we began tracking those babies in 2006. The Safely Surrender Baby Coalition leads the effort of educating Kern County residents about this law. This group of dedicated individuals represents a long list of departments, non-profits, hospitals, and stakeholders. We hope that you can assist us again this year in our efforts to educate our community about this important option for any woman and her baby in a crisis situation. Don't abandon your baby. Safely surrender your baby into the hands of any fire station or emergency room personnel. It's safe, legal, and no one has to know.

Obituary March 1, 1942 - January 2, 2016
On the second of January, our loving Heavenly Father called our beloved home. Gordon Hancock, Jr. was born in Alhambra, California and grew up in the Temple City area. Gordon was a hard-working man, responsible, and had a great sense of humor with a good delivery! He had a big heart and was always on alert with great compassion to help anyone in need. Early on Gordon worked at Ole's Hardware Store in Covina where he overcame his shyness helping people find their needs. He enjoyed creating attractive shelving designs for the store's products. Following Ole's, Gordon worked as a tire builder at Goodyear Tires in Los Angeles. After this, Gordon began his career as a baker for 33 years, working difficult hours, standing on cold cement at the Alpha Beta/Ralph's bakery in La Habra. His expertise was evident while working with the machinery and computers. During his younger years Gordon enjoyed cooking excellent and creative meals for his large family and friends. Gordon had many interests and hobbies. He loved all God's earth and creatures, from the stars to the squirrels. His first passion was for his two four-legged friends Kitsune and Taffy whom he loved and communicated with every day. He was a magnet to all animals and generously volunteered at the Kern River Valley Nature Preserve in Weldon. There, he helped with a head start program for our native turtles and enjoyed being a Preserve bird feeder. He was active with CB radio operation and was a licensed ham radio operator. Gordon served as a KRV Fire Safe Council volunteer for many years serving at the pleasure of the Board. He assisted with code compliance and weed abatement through the Lake IsabellaBodfish Property Owners Association. Gordon was well known at Von's where he rang the bell every year for Christmas in July and during the November-December season for our local Salvation Army, fundraising for the needy. Local children thought he was Santa Claus. Because of Gordon's history and science interests, he was always searching for a closer relationship with God. These last eleven years he found peace, attending Bible studies at Christian Assembly, worshipping and learning with others, finding answers about our Lord. Gordon loved his church family. Gordon is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Christine Hancock and his five children, Christopher Hancock, Roberta Cuilty, Steven Lucero, Michael Lucero and Michele Veenendaal, along with brother Kent Hancock, step-brother Richard Rudloff and 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Gordon lived a full life and enjoyed 11 years of retirement in the Kern River Valley. Christine was blessed with 43 years as Gordon's life mate, his love and companion. He will be missed and remembered always. Farewell for now… Death notices and obituaries with or without a picture are available for purchase in the Courier by calling 760-376-2860 during office hours weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., or can be requested through your local mortuay.

Wow! Snow! Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist As I enter my fourth year of life in the Kern River Valley I am finally enjoying a non-trivial amount of snow in Wofford Heights! I am a snow lover. Schlensker As a kid in southern IN, small amounts of snow would get schools called off. And it was really fun to play in, so we much appreciated snow! As a skier, well, if there's no snow there's no skiing (snow-skiing anyway). I love to watch snow fall and hear it crunch under my feet as I walk. And I am awed by the striking silence in the air which characterizes falling snow. Here in the Kern River Valley, though, snow's much more than pretty or fun! It's a water bank against drought. I heard on the radio recently that the Sierra snowpack is 120% of average, which is good. And, they said, if it gets to 150%, then we'll experience some drought relief. What a prospect! What a blessing! To borrow a phrase from Bing Crosby, "Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!" The snow that's stored up in the mountains this winter will mean water for crops next summer … not to mention the possibility of more water in the lake and in the river for other fun stuff! Snow is highly productive! Which is pretty much what the prophet Isaiah wrote in chapter 55, verses 10-11, in which God says, "For as the rain and the snow come down
from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth, And making it bear and sprout, And furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; So shall My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it." God's Word is powerful and productive! God's Word produced the entire universe! God said "Let there be…" and there was! And it was all very good (Genesis 1-2). That's as powerful as words can get. What God says happens! When "the wickedness of man was great on the earth (Genesis 6:5), "the LORD said, 'I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land" (Genesis 6:7). And with that, God spoke up a worldwide flood. But on the good-news side the "Word" named in Isaiah is also the Word, which John mentions in ch.1 as being with God and, itself, God. In v.14 that Word "became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth." And that Word, Jesus, God's Son, certainly accomplished its purpose by healing the sick, restoring sight to the blind, remobilizing the lame, raising the dead, and - most importantly for us - by offering His body as the sacrificial payment for the sins of the world! That's so much better than snow! Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella.

An entertaining look at Hollywood Sam Struckhoff Bryan Cranston in "Trumbo"
Courier Contributor
PICKS OF THE WEEK “Trumbo” (R) - Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) went from being the highest paid writer in the world to being jailed, scorned and blacklisted after he refused to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947. Defiant and outspoken, Trumbo was an unapologetic communist, which landed him in jail for 11 months as one of the famous Hollywood Ten. Later, he rebuilt his career behind pseudonyms and Bmovies ... eventually winning two Oscars after he was officially banned from the industry. The obvious irony in the movie is that the screenplay can't come close to the wit and insight of its subject. Cranston's performance elevates the whole affair, spewing barbed insight from beneath an imposing mustache. "Trumbo" is an entertaining look at Hollywood history, but misses out where it could shine. “Steve Jobs” (R) - By peeking backstage before three crucial announcements, this biopic takes a unique approach to an already wellstudied personality. As the man behind Apple Inc., Steve Jobs (Michael Fassbender) fought to build a legacy and push the boundaries of what consumers did with technology. Jobs' hard-edged monomania contrasts with the moral compass of Johanna Hoffman (Kate Winslet) and Steve Wozniak (Seth Rogen) -- a genius engineer and backstabbed friend.
Powerful performances allaround help separate this film from the pack of Jobs-related media and the biopic genre in general. Aaron Sorkin's script brings the fast, pithy dialog that always arrives at the right words at the right time. Fassbender is entrancing as usual, as he puts a full charge of conflicted intellect behind Jobs'. “Labyrinth of Lies” (R) - In the decade after World War II, Germany was in the midst of a heavy-duty identity crisis. Little indicators of shifting loyalties, hidden tragedies and outright denial are everywhere as Johann (Alexander Fehling), a young prosecutor, begins an investigation of a man who allegedly stood guard at Auschwitz and now lives as a schoolteacher. Johann finds that it's not just individuals covering up their pasts, but an entire society trying to hide from what happened. This entry for the foreign-language Oscar doesn't break the mold with ideas, but can be effective in examining collective conscience. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Don’t leave trout out in the cold Matt Freeman Courier Columnist It's no secret that trout are a cold loving fish, they prefer clean water that is no more than 65 degrees at the highest. Brown Trout can survive in water Freeman that has higher temps but Rainbow Trout, Golden Trout and other species of trout will start dying if the temps reach 70 degrees for more than a day or two. However, during the winter time, just like most other fish, trout do slow down and can be more challenging to catch. There are several reasons for this, one that many people don't think about is the fact there is just less to eat in winter, especially in rivers and streams where the trout are dependent on the insect population as their main food source. The main factor however is the simple fact that the metabolism of the fish slows down the colder the water gets. Trout are no different, but unlike warm water species they still can be very active in the winter but their habits change. So here are some tips on how to have a successful outing catching trout in the dead of winter. ■ First of all, the fish are not willing to move as much for food. So you need to work the water that much harder in rivers and streams. Cast to all parts of the pool or riffle you are fishing, starting at the top, and fish slow, let the fish see the offering.
■ This is a good time of year to use bait, something with some scent. Winter time is also all about nymph fishing for trout with a fly pole because there are not a lot of surface fly hatches. The underwater insect activity is less than in the summer but it is still there, and if you can find when that is happening, those trout will be feeding, regardless of water temps. ■ Use two flies, one that is larger and one that is smaller as a trailer fly. Try to match the hatch the best you can with the smaller fly and use something a bit flashy for the larger one. Fish deep and slow, and be patient often the bite is very light. ■ In the lake, this is the time of year bait can work really great. I like to use two rods, one with Power Bait and the other with a floating nightcrawler with either a marshmellow or with air in it and garlic scent. I have caught a lot of fish over the years using light leaders, I like using 2 lb test. You will have to be careful fighting them but there is a lot less structure in the lake and you can typically let them run and let the drag work to tire the fish. ■ Lake fishing seems to get better as the sun rises, no need to get up at 5 am like in the summer. I get out there about 8 am., fish til noon, and then the late afternoon into the evening. Go out there and get some, and send us some pictures to publish in the paper! Boat Owners Association
BoatUS Celebrates 50th BoatUS.com Courier Release In 1966, boaters could buy a new mid-sized cruiser for about $7,000, outboard engines had just surpassed 100 horsepower, and recreational boating was growing on a large scale across America. It was also in '66 that the nation's largest recreational boating group, Boat Owners Association of The United States BoatUS, got its start. The vision of offering representation, improving safety, providing quality services at competitive prices and saving boaters money. The "service, savings and representation" motto that remains at the core of the half million member organization. A look back at five decades of BoatUS' significant impacts and innovation include: ■ The first organization to fight for legislation on behalf of boaters, shaping national boating policy with the Federal Boat Safety Act of 1971 creating the US Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety. ■ Secured the passage of the Recreational Boating Safety and Facilities Improvement Act of 1979 which affirmed that taxes and fees paid by boaters would support boating programs. ■ Creates the only Consumer Protection Bureau (1970) for boaters to seek redress with manufacturers, suppliers or businesses and dispute mediation. ■ Lobbying, in 1980 President Carter signs the Recreational Boating Safety and Facilities Improvement Act,
authorizing $60 million in boating fuel taxes to be spent on boating safety programs and facilities. ■ The 1982, the successful fight to repeal the Federal Boat "user fee" tax, saving boaters up to $600 annually. " In 1984, leading the passage of the federal Wallop/Breaux Trust Fund Amendment, that now returns over $600 million annually to federal and state boating and fishing programs. " BoatUS develops a recreational boat Damage Avoidance Program and publication to help boat owners avoid claims and injuries. ■ In 2006, the EPA proposed operational permit that could be required for each boat in each state. BoatUS launches a massive two-year lobbying effort exempting recreational boats from permits. ■ In an effort to help the stormstruck marina industry recover after years of intense hurricane activity BoatUS holds the first ever, two-day Marina Hurricane Preparation Symposium. NOTE: THERE IS A SUMMARY OF THE INFORMATION IN THIS DOCUMENT ATTACHED. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: YOU ARE IN DEFAULT UNDER A DEED OF TRUST DATED 09/29/2005. UNLESS YOU TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY, IT MAY BE SOLD AT A PUBLIC SALE. IF YOU NEED AN EXPLANATION OF THE NATURE OF THE PROCEEDING AGAINST YOU, YOU SHOULD CONTACT A LAWYER. Trustor: Matthew John Caraway, a Married Man as His Sole and Separate Property. Duly Appointed Trustee: Western Progressive, LLC. Recorded 10/12/2005 as Instrument No. 0205283457 in Book ---, Page --- of Official Records in the Office of the Recorder of Kern County California. Date of Sale: 02/18/2016 at 10:00 AM. Place of Sale: At the front entrance to the City Hall, 1501 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield, California. Estimated amount of unpaid balance and other charges: $673,576.27. WILL SELL AT PUBLIC AUCTION TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER FOR CASH, CASHIER'S CHECK DRAWN ON A STATE OR NATIONAL BANK, A CHECK DRAWN BY A STATE OR FEDERAL CREDIT UNION, OR A CHECK DRAWN BY A STATE OR FEDERAL SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION, A SAVINGS ASSOCIATION OR SAVINGS BANK SPECIFIED IN SECTION 5102 OF THE FINANCIAL CODE AND AUTHORIZED TO DO BUSINESS IN THIS STATE. All right, title and interest conveyed to and now held by the Trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described as: More fully described in said Deed of Trust. Street Address or other common designation of real property: 15820 Edgewood Way, Frazier Park, CA 93222, A.P.N.: 316-
171-07-00. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above. The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $673,576.27. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder's sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the opening bid may be less than the total debt. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866) 960-8299 or visit this Internet Website http://www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/T rusteeServices.laspx using the file number assigned to this case: 2015-02136-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $356,365.12. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. process begins in August, with fundraisers and raffles; the primary fundraiser is the annual Wine Tasting event featuring Central Coast wines. If you would like to make a donation or be invited to the next Wine Tasting fundraiser, please contact Luz Polcik at 661803-2012. At camp, the primary focus is life-long goal setting. Lake Isabella Dam Task Force learned several key things Tuesday, February 2 Corps conference call. ■ Environmental Assessment (EA) #3 dealing with new USFS administration consolidation to Kernville and new fire station in Lake Isabella will be released week of February 8. Comments submitted by January 4. ■ The Lake Isabella fire
station will no longer need as much alternative energy production (5kw instead of 15kw), so only 2 turbines are needed (not 6 as proposed). ■ Contractors will be asked to include bids for either 2 wind turbines or 5 kilowatts of solar panels. Lowest cost will likely be chosen before contract is issued in June or July 2016.
