‘Orange Jubilant’ California poppies and lupine, along with various other wildflowers are seen bursting out on the hillsides of the Kern River Canyon, Highway 178 to and from Bakersfield making for a truly scenic route.

Where the wildthings are!

visitkern.com Courier Sightings The arrival of spring brings blossoms and wildflowers to Kern County. By mid-March, you can see the first hint of color as plums blossom and peach and nectarine orchards begin to bloom. Apples blossom in late March and early April, with citrus trees blossoming in April. Vibrant wildflowers emerge between mid-March and midApril, weather permitting. Wildflowers cover the foothills and spread across the valley and desert floors, moving to higher elevations with warmer weather. Wildflowers are a popular attraction in Kern County. Unusual weather patterns and higher precipitation in our desert areas this year have produced an array of wildflower bloom not seen for a few years. It’s worth the drive this month on Hwy 178 east through Walker Pass, Inyokern, Ridgecrest, Trona, Panamint and Death Valley. ■ Wildflower Etiquette Wildflowers are a popular attraction in Kern County. While it’s everyone’s right to enjoy the wildflowers, it’s also everyone’s responsibility to view them without damaging them for others to enjoy. Please keep in mind that picking wildflowers is illegal. Removing wildflowers interferes with pollination and reduces their numbers. Tr a n s p l a n t i n g blooming wildflowers

and involvement at the public meetings in February. The public review period for SEA #4 (Borel easement acquisition) will close on March 16. Any comments must be postmarked or emailed by that date for consideration in the official record. ■ The Corps is currently conducting a study to confirm that the construction of an interim boat launch at French Gulch will not cause unsafe traffic conditions. This investigation study stems from public comments and concerns. If

there are unaddressed safety concerns about existing traffic conditions, the Corps encourages the public to contact Caltrans. ■ The Corps continues its contracting process for both the new USFS Fire Station and the USFS Admin/Warehouse building. Additionally the vegetation mitigation contract will be awarded in 2016. ■ Contractors interested in bidding on these three contracts should visit fbo.gov/ for solicitation postings. ■ The Corps has secured

the vacated trailers while they are being removed. Initially, the trailers were to be towed away and disposed of, however, it was determined that the trailers are unable to be towed due to disrepair. On Jan. 15, the Corps modified the contract to take proper environmental precautions to allow demolition of the trailers on-site before hauling the material away. The contractor has begun demolition and removal of trailers and expects completion in the coming months.

Forest Service continues pile burning

The other day I walked past a window display in the local toy store and it made me think about the toys I used to play with. In later years my Middleworth children and their children and now our great grandchildren played with some of those same toys. Today so many toys are complicated and don't require much exercise. So mentally I listed in my mind toys that I remember for me and for the kids. Let's start with Christmas morning and there around the tree is a Lionel train complete with whistle, smoke and a headlight. Any kid would be thrilled. Here are some of the toys that could be found in toy boxes. Let's see, a pull behind duck that was on wheels and quacked. Kids love to tow that old duck around and listen to the quack that could be heard throughout the house and drove mom crazy! If you lived in the mountains in the winter there were sleds and skis and ice skates, they were fun and kept the kids outside all day complete with good exercise. If you lived in the flat land and had a park around there was a teeter-totter, swinging rings, swings, a sand box and always a slide. A word of warning, if you are going to teetertotter, with a child on each side they should weigh the same and should

Pile burning will be taking place in various campgrounds along the Upper Kern River, north of Kernville. Burning will start in Headquarters Campground and continue north. Burning may continue on and off, as conditions and resources permit, until March 11th. On March 1st, the Kern County Sheriff's Office was alerted of a possible phone scam circulating in the Kern County area. A citizen reported that her grandmother had received a call from the phone number 661-699-7576. The caller identified himself as her "oldest" grandson, at which point the lady who received the call realized it was a scam because she only has one grandson. She quickly hung up the phone. The reporting party conducted an internet search of the phone number and learned it is a common number used in internet phone scams involving callers identifying themselves as family members, usually a grandson or granddaughter. The caller then indicates they are out of the country and have either been arrested or are in the hospital and need money wired to them. The scam appears to primarily target senior citizens. The Kern County Sheriff's Office would like to remind people to be wary of callers soliciting information or currency without verifying who they are speaking to. If you believe you have possibly been targeted or receive a similar type call, try to note the number of the incoming call and immediately hang up. Do not provide an unknown caller any personal information. Report any suspicious calls or possible phone scam calls to your local law enforcement agency.

Kern Transit will implement new schedules for many of its routes beginning Monday, February 29. While most of the changes are designed to better reflect actual travel time and improve on-time performance, there will be a new weekend trip added to Route 100 (Bakersfield to Lancaster). The new trip will leave Bakersfield at 5:15 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and make stops in Tehachapi, Mojave and Rosamond before arriving in Lancaster at 7:47 p.m. The return trip from Lancaster leaves at 8:40 p.m. and arrives back in Bakersfield at 10:57 p.m. "Our last eastbound bus leaving Bakersfield on the weekends was at 12:40 p.m." said Bob Neath, Kern Transit manager. "Many passengers have told us that they would like to see another departure later in the day. We're excited to be able to offer this improvement to our service." The new schedules are available online at Kern Transit's website, kerntransit.org. Kern Transit is the County's public transportation provider, offering local and intercommunity bus service throughout Kern County and Lancaster. It serves 600,000 passengers annually over 17 fixed routes and six local dial-aride vehicles.

never bail out without telling the guy on the other end, otherwise "kaboom." Slides were fun and with a couple of handfuls of sand thrown on it you could zip down with blinding speed and end up three feet away on your fanny. Go to any park and these toys are still there, waiting for mom or dad to take the kids. Some of the easy toys to play with were marbles, yo-yo's, modeling clay, Play-Doh. If you were indoors playing with a yo-yo could be hazardous to furniture and people, Play-Doh and modeling clay are used to bring out the artist in the child. For girls there are paper dolls, (boys would play with these also but usually in a closet). A miniature house complete with tiny dolls and tiny furniture could keep girls busy for hours. Of course there was a regular doll that could cry and even wet the bed. What more could a little girl ask? Still in use today is a favorite artistic toy called the Etch-a-Sketch, with it a child could let his imagination go wild and with two knobs could use the screen over and over. If you had a two story house every kid needed a Slinky which would hop down from step to step to step. The dogs loved to chase the Slinky as did the kids. There are lots more toys to list each fun in its own special way. What fun it was and is. Did you play with some of these toys? I'll bet you could make your own list! Have fun!

Message of faith

Resident Aliens - part 1 Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist A guy walks into a bar in Alabama and orders a glass of white wine. The bartender says, "You're not from around here, are you?" GM market- Schlensker ed their Chevy Nova in Mexico some years back, but it did not sell well at all. They discovered that in Spanish "nova" means "It doesn't go." They were not from around there. Were they? When we lived in Woodland I tried to grow azaleas around our house. They died. When I asked the expert at the garden center why my azaleas died, he said, "You're not from around here, are you?" Yolo County has some of the most alkaline soil in the state, but azaleas like acid soil. A fellow from the Deep South was in Wisconsin in January. As he was experiencing his first encounter with snow as a driver, the locals were amused and saying, "You're not from around here, are you?" In many surroundings people can do strange things, make serious social blunders and do downright dangerous things when they are from somewhere else. Christians living in this world are, in a very real sense, displaced people. They are "not from around here." In Philippians 3:20, the apostle Paul asserts that "our citizenship is in heaven," and in Romans 12:2, he fur-

ther admonished followers of Jesus to "not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." Christians are supposed to be observably "not from around here," something of a colony on foreign soil. Stanley Hauerwas and William Willimon write in the preface to their book, Resident Aliens, "A colony is a beachhead, an outpost, an island of one culture in the middle of another, a place where the values of home are reiterated and passed on to the young, a place where the distinctive language and life-style of the resident aliens are lovingly nurtured and reinforced. … The church is a colony, an island of one culture in the middle of another. In baptism our citizenship is transferred from one dominion to another and we become, in whatever culture we find ourselves, resident aliens." Resident aliens work from a different set of assumptions and basic beliefs from the culture or society in which they live, so they operate from a different set of rules, guidelines and attitudes from most of the folks living around them. This fact can lead to various kinds of challenges for both the "locals" and the "resident aliens." We'll look at some of those challenges in the coming weeks. Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella.

Sadness and strength, fear and hope Sam Struckhoff

Saoirse Ronan in "Brooklyn"

Courier Contributor

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Brooklyn” (PG-13) - As a quiet Irish girl in a quiet, windswept coastal town in the south of the country, Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) is driven to America more by circumstance than wanderlust. She arrives in New York in the early 1950s, and immediately struggles with homesickness and alienation. Eilis -- and the world she inhabits -seem to change after finding romance with a charming Italian boy (Emory Cohen). Just when she's starting to feel at home, Eilis is called back to Ireland, meets another suitor (Domhnall Gleeson) and must decide which life she wants to live. What needs to be said upfront is that the story is more than its love triangle. Ronan shows Eilis's growth in deep ways with the right volumes of sadness and strength, fear and hope. The film was nominated for three Oscars. “The Big Short” (R) - There were a few people who saw the financial crisis of 2007-08 coming, and with no power to stop it, mitigate it or credibly warn the public, they used that foresight to make tons of money. An allstar ensemble hilariously depicts the characters swimming in the sharky waters of Wall Street, all occupying different positions on the moral spectrum -- Steve Carrell's character knows he's about to make money while others are ruined, Ryan Gosling's character just wants the payday already. Brad Pitt and Christian Bale inhabit their characters,

portraying nuanced fish in the murky pool. It is alarmingly funny -- funnier than any reality-based film about a financial crisis would have the right to be. It works, however. Director Adam Mckay ("Anchorman," "Talladega Nights") ditches the screwball comedy lens, and finds a snarkier tone that make can make a fun little spiel out of investment voodoo. This one's got five Oscar nominations. “Carol” (R) - Cate Blanchett stars as the titular Carol, an elegant and confident married woman, smartly dressed and chic for the 1950s. Mostly, we see her through the lens of Therese (Rooney Mara), a somewhat timid younger shop girl who forms a quick and difficult-to-understand attraction to Carol when they first meet. For much of the film, their connection is felt but not seen -- it's in tiny glances, a slight touch, chit-chat that barely qualifies as flirtatious -but it's really there, just covered by layers of drama and social stigma with it's six gathered nominations. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Feeling miffed over how you believe you were treated is understandable. But before you decide to "set things straight," make sure the whole thing wasn't just a misinterpretation of the facts. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Showing you care makes it easier to build trust and gain an advantage in handling a delicate situation. What you learn from this experience also will help you understand yourself better.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Planning for the future is fine, especially if you include the roles that family members may be asked to play. Don't be surprised if some hidden emotions are revealed in the process. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Making choices highlights much of the week, and you have a head start here, thanks to your ability to grasp the facts of a situation and interpret them in a clear-cut manner. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Carrying a torch can be a two-way situation: It can either keep you tied to the past or help light your way to the future. The choice, as always, has to be yours. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your watchwords this week are: "Focus." "Focus." "Focus." Don't let yourself be distracted from what you set out to do. There'll be time later to look over other possibilities. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A workplace opportunity might require changes you're not keen on making. Discuss the plusses and minuses with someone familiar with the situation before you make a decision. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Love and romance are strong in your aspect this week. If you've already met the right person, expect your relationship to grow. And if you're still looking, odds are you'll soon be finding it.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the opening bid may be less than the total debt. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866) 960-8299 or visit this Internet Website http://www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/Defau ltManagement/TrusteeServices.laspx using the file number assigned to this case: 2015-03015-CA. Information about postponements that are very

short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Date: February 2, 2016.
