On Tuesday at 9:30 p.m., a sheriff deputy commuting Highway 178 discovered a oneacre fire 1.5 miles into the lower Kern River Canyon, between the highway and the river. Three engines, three patrols and the Rio Bravo Hot Shots were dispatched and able to control the fire within 20 minutes of arrival. The CHP shut down the eastbound lane to one-way traffic control, and remained on scene throughout the incident. The fire is under investigation. The recent fire is a reminder of the

Keep Mountain Lions wild

The California Department of Fish & Wildlife and the U.S. Forest Service are asking Kern Valley residents to do their part to stay safe and keep mountain lions at bay after recent lions were captured on a wildlife backyard camera on April 19. The sightings took place at Burlando and Cannel Trail Roads in Kernville. You may be attracting mountain lions to your property without knowing it. More than half of California is mountain lion habitat, according to the CDFW. Mountain lions generally exist wherever deer are found. They are solitary and elusive, and their nature is to avoid humans. Mountain lions prefer deer but, if allowed, they also eat pets and livestock. In extremely rare cases, even people have fallen prey to mountain lions. Mountain lions that threaten people are immediately killed.

May Day is not an overly prominent holiday in America. Yet it does have a long and notable history as one of the world’s principal festivals. The origin of the May Day as a day for celebration dates back to the days even before the birth of Christ. And like many ancient festivals it has a Pagan connection also. ■ For the Druids of the British Isles, May 1 was the second most important holiday of the year because it was when the festival of Beltane was held. It was thought that the day divides the year into half. The other half was to be ended with Samhain the November 1. Those days the May Day custom was the setting of new fire. It was one of those ancient New Year rites performed throughout the world. And the fire itself was thought to lend life to the burgeoning springtime sun. Cattle were driven through the fire to purify them. Men, with their sweethearts, passed through the smoke for seeing good luck. ■ Then the Romans came to occupy the British Isles. The beginning of May was a very popular feast time for the Romans. It was devoted primarily to the worship of Flora, the goddess of flowers. It was in her

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Still Alice” (PG-13) -- At the height of her career, Dr. Alice Howland -- an accomplished professor of communication -- stumbles over her words during a lecture. In time, Alice (Julianne Moore) loses more words and gets lost during her routine runs. While still physically healthy, she is diagnosed with earlyonset Alzheimer’s disease. Alice’s husband (Alec Baldwin) and three adult children (Hunter Parrish, Kate Bosworth and Kristen Stewart) must stand by as her memory and intellect fade. The film manages to capture the drama and pain of the experience without giving in to melodramatic tear-jerking. There is a satisfying presence of human compassion and love, but nothing is sugarcoated. This type of illness drama comes off as Oscar-bait, but Moore gives a performance that deserves recognition. “Blackhat” (R) -- In this recent international-techno-computerthriller, we are asked to suspend disbelief as Chris Hemsworth (“Thor”) is called upon to save the world because he is The Greatest Hacker in the World. So Thor is a computer geek in this one, but a hunky, stoic computer geek who also is as tough as any Liam Neeson character. Hemsworth’s mission is to stop a bad-guy hacker (they’re called “blackhats”) who started his cyber-

Julianne Moore in “Still Alice” crime spree by blowing up a nuclear reactor. Director Michael Mann sure can do atmospheric thrillers (like “Heat” and “Collateral”), but this one just can’t make it on style alone. Though it’s punctuated by some stunning action sequences, a lot of the run is just muddled plot points covered by scenes of people typing and pointing at indecipherable symbols on computer screens.. “Mortdecai” (R) -- Johnny Depp minces and ponces his way around the world as a mustachioed art dealer, the latest in Depp’s long line of whimsical weirdos who garner half-hearted favor from audiences. Charles Mortdecai (Depp) is an Englishman with upper-crusty affectations, and a big problem with back taxes. To save his status, Mortdecai has to go on a madcap misadventure to track down a highvalue painting. To his credit, Depp commits to his shtick. Unfortunately, the wackiness isn’t so charming, and the jokes seem to get funnier the more they are repeated.. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Angels, Babies & Bad Guys by Dolly Ogawa-Amsk This is a book about a pastor that finds himself with a medical problem that seems impossible. The medical problem, he’s pregnant! While he is wrestling with the realities, God sends him an angel in charge of free will and alternative solutions. His Bishop and a whole cast of colorful characters decide that something must be done about his condition. His condition tests his faith and his outlook as he realizes that religion has rules that don't fit everyone. He wrestles with this dilemma as he empathizes with others who have problems that don't fit the standard answers. Readers respond: “A fascinating concept to open the eyes and ears. This should be made into a movie for sure. A must read not only by the public but I think it should be part of the curriculum at any school/ university level. 5 stars!” Kenny Williams Dolly Ogawa-Amsk About the Author: Born in Detroit, Dolly Ogawa-Amsk lived most of her life in Los Angeles, and currently resides in the San Francisco area. Prejudice Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist Not many of us like to be labeled as “prejudiced.” Besides being considered to be politically incorrect, prejudice also carries with it the Schlensker negative connotations of unfair, unthinking and irrational. Webster says prejudice is “a judgment or opinion formed before all the facts are known … [or] in disregard of facts that contradict it.” And most folks do not like to be accused of operating like that. If we take a close look at ourselves, though, each of us can find ways in which we are prejudiced. Our prejudice may stem from some unquestioned thing our parents, teachers, mentors or other influential person in our lives has told us. It may have originated from some experience we’ve had, which, itself, was unique or extraordinary and gave us a skewed perception of reality, or from which we made some stereotypical analysis and came to a prejudicial conclusion. In any case, we all own some sort of prejudice. We would, therefore, do well to try to search our hearts and minds in order to scrutinize our thinking and heighten our awareness of the bases of the assessments we have made and to consider the under-

pinnings of the motivations for our feeling, thinking and acting. At a recent pastors’ conference, I was brought to grips with one of my prejudices, which has to do with people, who are disabled. You’ll hear more about that in my upcoming Courier columns, because I think there are plenty of folks out there, who share my problem, and there are also plenty of disabled people out there, who’d benefit from a decrease in the prejudice from which they are seen. For now, though, I simply wish to give thanks to God for His not being prejudiced against us creatures here in this world. The apostle Peter said in Acts 10:34 when he, a devout Jew, was called upon to minister to some “unclean” Gentiles, “I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality.” When God took on human flesh in the person of Jesus, He, as the apostle Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:15, “died for all, that they who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.” Having been so loved so freely, completely and unconditionally by the almighty God of the Universe, we beloved creatures are stirred and strengthened to live without prejudice for Him. The faith column this week is reprinted from May 16 2014. Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding

at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the opening bid may be less than the total debt. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Maypoles were usually set up for the day in small towns, but in London and the larger towns they were erected permanently. ■ The Puritans frowned on May Day, so the day has never been celebrated with as much enthusiasm in the U.S. as in Great Britain. But the tradition of celebrating May Day by dancing and singing around a maypole, tied with colorful streamers or ribbons, survived as a part of the English tradition. Children celebrated the day by moving back and forth around the pole with streamers, chose a May queen, and hung May baskets on the doorknobs of folks -- all leftovers of the old European traditions.
