Good Samaritans travel our highways A friend and I were coming back from Ridgecrest on April 21 when my car broke down on 178 and 395 going to Lake Isabella. My friend called her insurance, AAA, and they said they would be there in 30 minutes. While we were waiting, a man with a horse trailer stopped to help. We told him we had help coming and thanked him. Then an Ashley Furniture truck from Ridgecrest came and stopped to help and they checked the fluids and said they were o.k. Then a couple from Squirrel Valley stopped and offered us water and tacos! Then an off duty CHP officer stopped. He wanted to make sure we were all right. We told him we were. By then the tow truck was there. The man's name was Chris and he had water for us and amused us with stories until we pulled into B&M garage in Lake Isabella. Thank all of you for making our day better! Kitty Rock, Weldon and Pat Pool, Kernville

I've noticed that when we want to spice up a conversation or brighten something we're writing, we use metaphors. Webster says a metaphor is a figure Middleworth of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison. For instance, "A sea of troubles" or "All the world's a stage" are both common metaphors. There is no doubt that metaphors add color and meaning to a sentence. For instance, if you made a bad investment you could say you were "burned by a shady deal". When you're angry it might be time to "chill out". How about, "He was a diamond in the rough?" It's easy to see how they add zest to any message. Here's a metaphor that I particularly like *"Her curls glistened in the rain like nose hairs after a sneeze." And here are some political ones:

FACT to host Baby Bird Shower and Open House The Facility for Animal Care and Treatment, known as FACT, will host a free open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 3, in the Environmental Studies Area at California State University, Bakersfield. The event also includes a baby bird shower with a registry of gift items. Visitors to the open house can see a variety of local birds of prey including redtailed hawks, Cooper's hawks, great horned owls, barn owls, and golden eagles as well as songbirds, turtles and frogs. CSUB biology students will give visitors the opportunity to make a recycled journal, go on a scavenger/Easter egg hunt and take tours to learn about FACT's animal rescue program. Right now is baby bird season, and FACT has several rescued babies that have been brought into the facility. Under the direction of FACT Coordinator Marlene Henlsey, CSUB students help raise the birds for release back into the wild once they reach maturity. Visitors are invited to participate in a baby bird shower by donating items from the "shower registry" (see attached). Examples of items include shredded cardboard bedding, heating pads and heat lamps. "Having items donated provides an opportunity for the visitors to be involved with the baby birds' care. The donations help free up funding to be used on more specialized items that are needed when caring for wildlife," Hensley said. Additionally, during the open house, volunteers from CSUB's 60+ Club will sell educational gifts and souvenirs including FACT t-shirts, zoo books, cards and other educational materials to support FACT. FACT's mission is to serve as a wildlife rescue, conservation and education
*"He was considered a lame duck candidate." *"It was a landslide victory." *"It's a grassroots campaign." What can be fun is to check your newspaper (the Courier, of course) to see if you can find metaphors. News people use them frequently, so it isn't hard, and you'll be amazed at how many there are. I loved mixed metaphors as well. Let me close this column with some really mixed ones which give pause for thought while they grab your attention. *"It's half of one and six dozen of another" *"It was like trying to thread a needle with a haystack." *"I'm burning the midnight oil at both ends." *"He's robbing Peter to pay the Piper." *"Give someone an inch and they'll take the whole ruler." *"The difference is like apples and orange juice." And finally, my favorite mixed metaphor: **Writing a column like this is not rocket surgery."

Ronald Gene Crowder March 4, 1942 - April 26, 2014 Ronald Gene Crowder was born on March 4, 1942 to M.L. Crowder and Elizabeth Crowder in Bakersfield, CA Ronnie went home to his Lord and Savior on Saturday evening. Ronnie grew up in the Kern River Valley where he attended grammar and high school. He had a passion for horses and team roping that continued until his health prevented him from riding. Ronnie went to many rodeos and jackpot roping's throughout the state of CA. His proudest moments were when he was roping with his son, Ronnie Jr. Ronnie married his high school Sweetheart Carol on July 7, 1962, and the following year their family was completed by the birth of their son, Ronnie Jr. Ronnie worked at the Johnsondale lumber mill, and had a wholesale milk delivery route before starting his horseshoeing career. Ronnie mentored many young horseshoers starting their careers, including his son, Ronnie Jr and his grandson Logan. He retired from horseshoeing at the age of 70. Ronnie was preceded in death by his father and mother, nephew Doug Crowder and sister-in-law Lois Crowder. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Carol, their son Ronnie Jr and wife Joy of Paul's Valley, Oklahoma. Five grandchildren, Josh Crowder of Bakersfield, CA, Logan, John, Corbin and Taelyn Crowder of Oklahoma. Brothers Bob Crowder of Kernville and Donny Crowder and wife Marty of Bakersfield, CA and their families. Ronnie's greatest joy in his life was his family. He enjoyed traveling with Carol to see his son and family in Oklahoma. His smile and twinkle in his eye will be missed by those who knew and loved him. A celebration of his life will be held at Wofford Heights Four Square Church, Sat, May 3rd at 11. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Doug Crowder Memorial Fund, 10113 Glenn Street, Bakersfield, CA 93312 Death notices and obituaries with or without a picture are available for purchase in the Courier by calling 760-376-2860 during office hours weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., or can be requested through your local mortuay.

No Doubt About It! Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist One of my high school buddies said to me on an early spring day, "Hey Dan, did you hear they cancelled Easter this year?" Somewhat taken Schlensker aback I responded with gullible surprise, "No. I haven't heard. Why?" He explained, "They found the body!" Well, I guess that'd certainly do it! For Jesus' dead body to have been found would certainly put the proverbial kibosh on Easter! But they didn't. Nobody did! Plenty of people tried but were unsuccessful. Hundreds, found Jesus' living body after He'd risen from the grave. And they continued to proclaim it for years to come, sometimes at the risk of their very lives. For some, proclamation of Jesus' resurrection meant death. Which brings us to a poignant and convincing evidence for the truth of Jesus' having risen from the dead. The evidence has to do with the question, "Would you die for a lie?" Not many people would die for what they knew was untrue. But the thousands of early Christians, who lost their lives because of their conviction, knew it was true! In fact the resurrection of Jesus is an historical notion which is supported to an equal or greater extent than any historical conjecture in existence today, which is accepted as fact by the people
in our world today. That's what Josh McDowell, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ discovered. Josh graduated with honors from high school as a man on a mission. His goal in life, as a confirmed atheist, was to destroy Christianity, and he knew that all it'd take was to disprove Jesus' resurrection from the dead. He was right. But after two years of earnest research in university libraries and using to the fullest extent the resources available to him, Josh became a Christian, having become convinced from the evidence available today, that Jesus really did rise from the dead! You probably remember that Jesus' disciple, Thomas, had his doubts, too; even though Jesus had said that He would be killed and then rise again (Mark 8:31) and even though Thomas had been told by his friends that Jesus had risen (John 20:25) he still wouldn't believe it. But for Thomas "seeing was believing." When he saw and touched Jesus, he acknowledged Jesus as "my Lord and my God" (John 20:28). Although we don't have Jesus' visible, tangible, touchable presence today, we do have the testimony of Scriptures (of demonstrated veracity) and the formidable body of historical evidence, which should convince us that the risen Christ is also our Lord and our God. Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lake Isabella.

In love with an operating system By Sam Struckhoff Pick of the Week “Her” (R) — In the nearish future, computers become so adept at human interaction that it's hard to tell the difference between a machine and a real personality. Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) is a lonely, divorced writer who falls in love with the operating system of his new computer. To be fair, Sam -- as the software is called -- knows every intimate detail of Theodore's online life, she reads his emails, loves his sense of humor, asks thoughtful questions ... and she's voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Writer/director Spike Jonze ("Adaptation," "Being John Malkovich") took home both the Oscar and Golden Globe for best original screenplay because of "Her." The film uses the wacky premise to get at the heart of bigger ideas about how we relate to technology, and how love works between humans. “That Awkward Moment” (R) — This is one of those romantic comedies where the characters are adults, but all of the jokes and commentary were clearly designed by adolescents. Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller play a trio of buds in their mid-20s, just pallin' around New York City, picking up chicks, cracking (lame) jokes and dodging emotional entanglements.

Joaquin Phoenix in "Her" This movie would be hilarious as a parody of the shallow lessons taught by romcoms, but that's not how it tries to be funny -- instead you get a recurring bit about how one of the guys always leaves a smell in the bathroom. “Generation Iron” (PG-13) — The Mr. Olympia bodybuilding competition draws contenders from all over the world, and it was the stage that helped make Arnold Schwarzenegger into a superstar. The highest level of competitive bodybuilding demands an amazing level of skill and commitment. This documentary follows seven contestants in the 2013 Mr. Olympia as they forge their muscles and discuss what drives them. Narrated by Mickey Rourke, the movie finds what makes bodybuilding such a unique world. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Health Insurance Matters
Essential health benefits, part 2 Harry P. Thal Courier Columnist I promised a number of clients I would do some research into the "Essential Health Benefits" which are now part of Thal the "Affordable Care Act" also referred to as ObamaCare. Last week, I addressed the first five of the 15 preventative services covered in all insurance policies under the "Affordable Care Act" which included Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, Alcohol Misuse, Aspirin Therapy, Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Screening. Colorectal Cancer screening is recommended for adults over age 50. You may get tested at an earlier age if colorectal cancer runs in your family. There are several different tests used. Check with your doctor for the exam appropriate for you. Some tests are done every 1 to 2 years; others are done every 5 to 10 years. Depression is a serious illness. Talk to your doctor about how you are feeling. If you are diagnosed with depression, you are not alone as it affects millions of adults in the United States each year. This condition is treatable and the best thing you can do for both yourself and your family and loved ones. People with high blood pres-
sure should be screened for Type 2 Diabetes. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. If not controlled, it can lead to blindness, nerve damage, kidney disease and other health problems. Small steps can be taken to prevent diabetes, such as watching your weight, eating healthy and staying active. Diet Counseling is provided as a benefit in ACA health plans. Eating healthy can reduce disease. HIV Screening is recommended for all ages from 15 to 65 as well as all pregnant women. You could have the HIV virus and feel healthy and not even know you are infected. HIV is transmitted between people who have sex with more than one partner or use drugs with needles. You are paying top dollar you're your new ACA compliant health plan. These benefits are covered with no cost to have an annual screening with your health care provider. Why not use it. Next week I shall continue with the "Preventative and Wellness Benefits." (Research for this series was with data provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; HHS.gov/healthcare.) Talking About Real Estate
Tips for financing success Matt Freeman Courier Columnist As a real estate agent, I have experienced the nightmare scenario over the years of a buyer being preFreeman approved for a loan and ultimately not getting it for one reason or another. Don't let careless missteps cost you a home; here are a few common ones and how to prevent them: ■ Changing jobs in the middle of the application process: Banks don't like change, there is a reason they run your credit as a buyer both before the mortgage application is approved and again right before they issue the loan docs. A change in job, a reduction in pay, even an increase in pay during the loan application process can have negative consequences because those factors change debt to income ratios and the lenders perception of job stability. In short, if you are in the middle of buying a house, stay at your current job! ■ Taking out additional credit during the application process: I had clients pre-approved for a loan decide that they needed a set of new Jet-Skis, which of course they financed. Guess what? They got to keep the Jet Skis, because they were not able to get a house! The
lender declined the application as soon as they saw the new credit account pop up on the credit report because it caused the buyer's to have an additional payment each month, therefore they had too much debt and no longer qualified for the mortgage payment they were pre-approved for. ■ Lying on the initial application: Lenders do full investigations on a buyer's credit history, employment history, pay history, tax history, etc. It's mighty tough, very inadvisable and ultimately considered fraud to not include or lie about things on a mortgage loan application. Ever heard of Crisp and Cole Real Estate out of Bakersfield? Don't lie on a credit app, you either qualify or you don't qualify, and you can sleep at night either way. ■ Making large bank deposits during the application process: This one sounds nuts, but it happens and lenders will ax deals because of it. The money for a down payment to buy a property has to sit there for 60 days courtesy of Federal money laundering and anti drug trafficking laws. Seasoned funds consist of either retirement accounts, or existing monies over 60 days old in current accounts, don't put cash in escrow during the loan application process. You'll need to provide solid facts and figures to stay in the game. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) A minor health problem might cause you to ease up on your usually busy schedule. But you'll soon be back in the saddle and ready to pick up the reins and charge ahead. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) The adventurous Sea Goat might be eager to take on a new challenge. ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) This is a good week to look at healing bruised feelings and re-establishing weakened relationships. It's also a good week to start new projects and make new job-linked contacts. TAURUS (Apr. 20 to May 20) Music and art dominate the week, giving the sensual Bovine a lot to appreciate. On the practical side, deal firmly, but fairly, with those who might try to undermine your work efforts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Good feelings continue to flow from your recent efforts to reconnect with family and friends. But be ready to defuse a dispute before it can disrupt all that peace and harmony. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A practical view of a romanticized situation could help to clarify some of its more confusing aspects before you make a decision that could be tough to undo later on. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Pay more attention to what a recent spate of workplace criticism might say about your performance and not what you think it implies about you personally. Some flexibility might be called for. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) With new information, and new promises of support (not to mention growing self-confidence), this could be a good time to restart a project you couldn't quite handle before.
