Curb appeal The good ol’ summertime has begun

KRV Historical Society Board of Directors hold the check they were recently awarded by the Bakersfield Californian Foundation. The group is continuing to appeal for additional funds to complete the project.

In case you hadn’t noticed, the summer season has officially crept up on us. June 20 was one of two solstices -- days when the rays of the sun directly strike one of the two tropical latitude lines. It marks the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere and simultaneously heralds the beginning of winter in the southern hemisphere. The earth spins around its axis, an imaginary line going through the planet between the north and south poles. The axis is tilted somewhat off the plane of the earth’s revolution around the sun. The tilt of the axis is 23.5 degrees. Thanks to this tilt, we enjoy the four seasons. For several months of the year, one half of the earth receives more direct rays of the sun than the other half. When the axis tilts towards the sun, as it does between June and September, it is summer in the northern hemisphere. Alternatively, when the axis points away from the sun from December to March, the southern hemisphere enjoys the direct rays of the sun during their summer months. June 20 is called the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and simultaneously the winter solstice in the Southern most Hemisphere. Around Dec. 21 the solstices are reversed. Without the tilt of the earth’s axis, we would have no seasons. The sun’s rays would be directly overhead of the equator all year long. Only those people in the upper latitudes north and south of the tropics experience seasons.

Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier

Michael Batelaan Courier Spotlight There has been a resurgence of capital investment in the Kern River Valley both improving the community and the visitor experience. The Courier plans to bring more of these uplifting stories about the entrepreneurs who bring these improvements to the Kern Valley.

The new Archive Storage Facility of the Kern Valley Museum is located across the street from the Museum at 60 Big Blue Road in Kernville. It will house the Ardis and Gail Walker collection of books, artwork

and artifacts, and much, more that is now housed off site. The KRV Historical Society received a boost from the Bakersfield Californian Foundation with a grant of $20,000 toward its completion. KRV Historical Society treasurer, Chris Burdge and volunteer Margie Clack worked hard to secure these funds and are now onto the next grant project, the USDA Rural grant, hoping for $30,000 to be matched by $10,000 of Historical Society funds to bring in the needed computers, scanners, library quality bookshelves archival folders and cabinets.

After the generous donation of the land from A-Mark Foundation (Steve and Jadwiga Markoff) valued at about $60,000, the $148,795 already raised and the $30,000 being sought from the USDA, the project will total out at about $240,000 plus thousands of hours of volunteer labor, and will be debtfree at the opening. The 1850 square foot building was built by community volunteers, under the consulting of local contractor Lanny Borthick. Curator Dianna Anderson said, "We have received some really good donations as a result of

building the annex. People have been bringing historical, books, artifacts, papers and other finds to us." But she admonished, "Please don't just leave items on the porch for us. Call us and meet with a curator prior to leaving donations." Anderson went on to say, "Having been in the Kern Valley for such a short time, I marvel at the generosity of the Valley people. This project is a testament to that. The project is going up debt-

Meeting to feature global motorcycle trip The June 28 general meeting will feature Harley Davidson world traveler, David Barr who will recount his travels beginning with his military life in the Marines and his adventures on his motorcycle. Barr has logged over 80,000 miles on a motorcycle and has traveled around the globe more than once. He will tell of his adventure, despair, and triumphs and how he made friends around the world as he rode from country to country on his Harley Davidson. He is one of only 70 people who have circumnavigated the world since 1912. He has also completed two Guinness world record rides. Hear about it at 7 p.m. at the Senior Center in Lake Isabella.

Recalled food On June 16 Kern County Aging and Adult Services was notified by one of our distributors that a supplier of frozen peas had their product recalled due to potential contamination of Listeria. The Department served these peas both in the senior nutrition centers and were also delivered to residents participating in the meals on wheels program. This notification includes peas with a shipped date of February 4, 2016 to today. In order to provide immediate information to those who have potentially consumed this product, we are providing notification to our community. "The health of our clients is of the utmost importance to us and take the safety of our food and food preparation seriously" says Lito Morillo, Director of Kern County Aging and Adult Services. Follow these recommendations if you have eaten the recalled product: ■ If you have eaten recalled products and do not have any symptoms, tests or treatment are not needed, even for people at higher risk for Listeriosis. ■ People who develop symptoms of Listeria after eating possibly contaminated products should contact their healthcare provider. Symptoms of Listeria include high fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, headache, and neck stiffness. Although people can sometimes develop Listeriosis up to 2 months after eating contaminated food, symptoms usually start within several days.

WOW! My Father's Day stretched out to almost a week. I received so much loot that I needed to rest while I put things away. I Middleworth enjoyed it so much that I thought I might share the happy happenings that I faced on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Here's what happened. On Thursday I received a shoe box containing shoes. Most of the time a shoe box contains everything but shoes so this was a new one on me. The shoes are Sketchers and fit like a glove and eventually I'm hoping they will fit like shoes. I will say that they are extremely comfortable. I also received a set of Bongo Drums and a Banana that rattled and a train whistle. I plan on starting a band someday. Maybe. On Friday via snail mail I received in a plain brown envelope a blue shirt that have little fish all over it. I might point out that last year from the same son I received a blue shirt that was covered with all kinds of little sail-boats. Now here's my dilemma, I know that if the blue shirt with fish is hung to close to the blue shirt with ships problems might arise. Wherein the fishermen in the boat catch all the fish from the blue shirt which would leave my blue shirt only a blue shirt and the other blue shirt

loaded with fish in all the boats. A few dead fish might also ruin the whole thing, but I am hopeful that things will work out. So to prevent this, my wife will hang the two shirts several hangers apart. On Saturday night we had dinner in a Kernville Italian restaurant. The food was great and the 5 people with me were also great. Before dinner I was given several Father's Day gifts. As both of my readers know I collect cups and was given 3 of the ugliest cups that have ever been fired in a kiln and they are perfect for my collection. One is a cup that looks like someone sat on it when it was still wet, another looked like a miniature garbage can, lid and all and the third cup was a troll with pimples, blackheads and wild hair. My final gift of the evening was the one that knocked me out of my socks. In collusion with my wife and Courier owner Michael, I was given a book containing every article I have written since 2005 to the present. I found out that the compendium of all my articles took two years to be placed in book form. I'm still in awe of the hard work Michael put in to get it typed and printed. Thank you Michael and special thanks to my wife whose idea this was. Sunday, I received calls from all my children, grand-children and great-grand-children. My ears are still tingling. What a great week. How could this be topped? Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth is a retired security manager for Pacific Bell.

"Catapalooza" $20 spay/neuter program Critters Without Litters is pleased to announce that for a limited time cat owners can have their cat (male or female) fixed for only $20, thanks to the generous support of The Bakersfield Californian Foundation. "The Californian Foundation has once again stepped up with funding that allows us to reduce the fee for having your cat fixed to only $20," said Vicky Thrasher, executive director. Cat owners should call the clinic at 661831-6000 to schedule an appointment. "This program is limited, so if you've been thinking about having your cat fixed but haven't gotten around to it yet, now's the time to get your cat in." The program is limited to pet cats, who must come to the clinic in a secure carrier. Critters Without Litters is the only nonprofit, low-cost spay/neuter clinic in Kern County, operating Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information, or to schedule an appointment for your pet, call 661-831-6000 or visit their website at critterswithoutlitters.org.

Message of faith

Shiny, happy people Ben Richey, Courier Columnist A while back I was listening to a mix of 90's songs for nostalgia's sake. And as I listened I came upon a song I haven't heard in years; "Shiny, Richey Happy People" by the rock group R.E.M. It was an uplifting, if not repetitive, song that shot to the top of the charts in 1991, but soon became the bane of their existence. Despite its overall radio success, in a day when bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam were releasing angsty grunge anthems lamenting the difficulty of life, R.E.M.'s little song about love, joy, and togetherness seemed silly and out of place. The message of coming together and holding hands just didn't connect in a day when teens were more interested in pummeling each other in mosh pits. Grunge kids weren't shiny or happy, and they sure weren't going to be holding hands. To this day, the band hates that song. I, for one, have always liked the song. There's not a lot of depth to it, but when I hear it played it puts a smile on my face. Furthermore, as a believer in Christ, it has always reminded me of an important spiritual truth. In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus tells His followers "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the

house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." It's funny how God often uses silly and inconsequential things to remind us of powerful spiritual truths from His Word. Christians are called to shine into the world to dispel darkness and show truth for all to see. The world certainly needs to hear the truth proclaimed, but they also need to see God's people loving, serving, sacrificing, supporting, and showing compassion just as Jesus did. Jesus indicates that it's in "seeing" the good we do that God will receive the glory due Him. We who have come to know Jesus Christ have more to offer the world than just comments lamenting how we wish things were different or demands that culture conform to our comfort. We have a light to shine in the darkness to bring real change. We have what Peter calls an "inexpressible joy" (1 Peter 1:8-9) that flows from knowing we are redeemed, restored, and reunited in relationship with our Creator. We have the Spiritdriven power to work in such a way that God is praised. This week, I would like to encourage you to let your joy show. Let your light and your deeds go before you as proof that God is at work in you. As the song "Unbroken Praise" says, "let my deeds outrun my words." Go be shiny, happy people this week- you might be surprised by the results. Ben Richy is the lead pastor of Kernville First Baptist Church.

Heartbreaking Sam Struckhoff Courier Contributor

PICKS OF THE WEEK “I Saw the Light” (R) - Hank Williams wrote and performed heartbreaking songs about heartbreak, but those notes get lost in this low-fidelity biopic about the musician and his infidelities. Brit actor Tom Hiddleston ("The Avengers," "Crimson Peak") plays the Alabaman songsmith, with Elizabeth Olsen as his first wife, Audrey May. Before his death at the age of 29, Williams lit up the radio waves and established himself as a singular stage presence. Hiddleston's performance is blameless, but the movie never seems to find its rhythm. There's not much insight into the creative process of the man. There's plenty about his troubled love life, but the connection to his music is never successfully made real. “The Family Fang” (R) Chamille and Caleb Fang (Maryann Plunkett and Christopher Walken) produce artistic "pieces," little deceptions and pranks that shock, surprise and, allegedly, provoke discussion. Their children, Annie and Baxter (played as adults by Nicole Kidman and Jason Bateman), were either understudies or unwitting props in these performances for most of their childhood. When their parents vanish, leaving behind a gruesome crime scene, the siblings go on a search, never certain if it's sincere or another

stunt. It's a dark sort of humor used to explore the ways that nobody gets a normal childhood, and what that means for us as grownups aware of our shortcomings. As director, Bateman pulls off some serious storytelling, avoiding the usual stumbles of a novel-to-film adaptation. “Boy and the World” (PG) Beginning in a simplistic, childlike and colorful place, this unique animated film follows a boy's strange and perilous journey after his father leaves for the city and a war breaks out. There isn't much discernable dialog, but the story comes across in vivid movement, music and colors. The boy's adventure takes him from country to city, through a carnival and a warzone. With a main character who's just above a stick figure and almost no real words spoken, it really is a work of amazing scope and emotion. The film has brought in dozens of awards from festivals around the world. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

WellBeing

Help your pets beat the heat ASPCA Courier Release The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® reminds pet parents how to keep pets safe and healthy during summer's dog (and cat) days. "Summer time is a wonderful time for family and friends to get together and enjoy themselves, often with a beloved pet," says Dr. Steven Hansen, Senior Vice President of ASPCA Animal Health Services. "However, even the healthiest pets can suffer from dehydration, heat stroke and sunburn if they're overexposed to the heat." Here are just some of the ways animal lovers can help ensure their pets have a safe summer: ■ A visit to the veterinarian for a spring or early summer check-up. ■ Make sure your pet is up-to-date on all necessary vaccinations. ■ Dogs and cats can become dehydrated quickly, so give your pets plenty of water when it is hot outdoors. ■ Make sure your pet has a shady place to escape the sun. ■ Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle, on a hot day, even with the windows open, a parked automobile can become a furnace. Symptoms of overheating in pets include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, seizures, and an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees." "Animals with flat faces, like pugs and Persian cats, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. ■ Summertime is the perfect time for a backyard barbeque or party, but please

remember that the food and drink you serve your guests may be poisonous to pets. Avoid raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate and products with the sweetener xylitol. ■ Commonly-used flea and tick products, rodenticides (mouse and rat baits), insecticides, and herbicide lawn products can be harmful to cats and dogs if ingested, so keep them out of reach. While there are flea products that can be used safely on dogs, these same products can be deadly to cats. When walking your dog, steer clear of areas that you suspect have been sprayed with insecticides or herbicide lawn products. Keep citronella candles, oil products and insect coils out of pets' reach as well. ■ Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool, as not all dogs are good swimmers. Introduce your pets to water gradually and make sure pets wear flotation devices while on boats. Rinse your dog off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt from his fur, and try to keep your dog from drinking pool water, which contains chlorine and other chemicals that could cause stomach upset. ■ Please leave pets at home when you head out to Fourth of July celebrations, and never use fireworks around pets. Many types of fireworks contain potentially toxic substances such as potassium nitrate, copper, chlorates, arsenic and other heavy metals." If your dog or cat accidentally ingests a potentially toxic substance this summer, it is important to contact your local veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 for immediate assistance. For more information on having a fun, safe summer with your pet, please visit aspca.org.

All right, title and interest conveyed to and now held by the Trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described as: More fully described in said Deed of Trust. Street Address or other common designation of real property: 14013 Barnsdale Ave. Bakersfield, CA 93314, A.P.N.: 495193-03-00. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the opening bid may be less than the total debt. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. free." CSUB professor Christopher Livingston, a librarian and archivist at the Walter Stiern Library has been bringing up students from his archiving classes as well as getting samples from the museum and has been invaluable in assisting museum volunteers with the daunting task of archiving the works in the Kern River Valley Museum, which has been described as a "significant collection." Livingston runs the Historical Research Center at CSUB. He and his students are assisting

with organizing and digitizing the many works owned by the repository. When the new annex opens, the works will be organized via the Dewey Decimal system, for the convenience of researchers. The new facility is divided into two parts. The front part of the building will be available for Historical Society board meetings, or for anyone to come in and research a Kern Valley topic. The curator's desk will be located there and there will be table space for patrons to conduct research. The Historical Society expects that this new facility will attract

researchers from all over the country. The materials will be brought to them from the back room of the building for them to work on. The back room will have long counters, staff work tables, scanners, computers, preservation chemicals to arrest decay in the documents, and archival boxes. It will be lit with non-ultraviolet LED lighting to delay deterioration of documents. This will be the place where the volunteers will be able to scan documents, continue the archiving endeavors, and organize the art, which will be housed there and periodically changed out in the museum across the street.
