Out of the fire Kern Valley resident John Welcher, Jr. explains to media how Kern County firefighters appeared out of the smoke to rescue his parents, bedridden brother and him from the fast moving flames of the Erskine Fire as it swept through Southlake.

Teddy Bears' Picnic Day Michael Batelaan Courier Cover story

timeanddate.com Courier Family If you have kids in your life, take them out with their teddy bears for a picnic on July 10, Teddy Bears' Picnic Day. Celebrated mainly in the United States, Canada, Australia and in some parts of Europe, the origins of this unofficial holiday are unknown. It is also unclear what the holiday aims to achieve. It could be that the anonymous creators of the holiday wanted parents to encourage creativity among their children by taking them out for a whimsical picnic in the outdoors with their teddy bears and other stuffed toys. The holiday owes its name to a song of the same name by American composer, John Walter Bratton and Jimmy Kennedy. It remains popular as a children's song, having been recorded by numerous artists over the decades. How to celebrate ■ Take out the kids in your life and their stuffed bears for a picnic. ■ If you have to have the picnic at home, what about setting a pillow tent in the middle of your living room and treat your kids' teddy bears to a picnic? Did you know that this popular stuffed toy was named after American president Theodore Roosevelt, Jr?

Kern River Valley resident John Welcher had the opportunity Wednesday to thank the firefighters that rescued his family on June 23rd from the

Erskine Fire. The meeting took place where Welcher's parents’ and brother's homes once stood in Southlake in the 8400 block of Wildmint Drive. Welcher heard of the fast moving fire and

responded to the homes of his parents and brother next door. His parents John Sr. and Darlene Welcher in their mid 70's and his 59 year old brother who is bed ridden with MS would need assistance to escape the fire.

July safety tip of the month: ■ As a community, we have already experienced the devastation fire can cause. Please remember to be responsible when smoking while driving or as a pedestrian and while recreating in the Kern River Valley area this season. Remember, use of fireworks is prohibited! To all who stepped up to help a community in a time of crisis, thank you!

I have been lucky because all of my grand-children and great-grandchildren have lived here in Kern County. That has meant that all of Middleworth them have received some influence from me. Because of that all of them have learned to slurp spaghetti, find special rocks, twigs that magically become fishing poles, and seeing the wondrous shapes of clouds and falling stars. These and a thousand other things I have shared with my kids. Today I want to tell a few stories about my great-grandchild, Landon. From the time he was born Landon has been impressive. For the first few years he had the cherubic look that one might see of an angel with wings. You know the kind you see in picture books. Over the last few years (he is now six); he has changed from an angel to a fullfledged muscle-bound boy. Early on he wasn't quite sure how to handle a Great-Grandpa. It would take 10 or 15 minutes for him to shyly come over and give Grandpa a quick hug. But things have changed. Now when he gets out of the car, opens the door or is wading in a pool, he sees Grandpa and he runs like a gazelle jumping up and grabbing me with a fierce hug and a cry of Gramps! Gramps! I'm always amazed to find him looking at a bug or a bird or any

other animal trying to figure out exactly what they are and where they came from. Landon has always asked if he could help vacuum the house. His mom always let him, but a few years ago he was given his own jr. vacuum cleaner and for the next month all he did was run around the house exclaiming vacuummmmm, vacuummmmm and woe be the person who got in his way as he searched for dust. He still helps Mom vacuum but doesn't make such a fuss. Somewhere along the line he has made it plain to us that he likes to help clean, set the table and load the dishwasher. Something special happened last week while I was weed-whacking. Landon asked if he could help. He said, "I can do it Gramps, let me try, please, please." So I did and it was a sight to behold. He being the whacker was mowing down pinecones, wood, rocks and an occasional weed with gusto! The look on his face was one of pure joy. We have a circular driveway and one day while visiting I put Landon in my lap, held the steering wheel loosely while Landon thought he was driving. We went around the house at least 20 times at the super speed of at least 4 miles an hour. I think Landon felt like it was 100 miles an hour and he was the famous race driver Speed Landon. It's great to be "Gramps" and watch them grow....lucky me! Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth is a retired security manager for Pacific Bell.

All for One united to rebuild the community Robin Lyons, Faith Community Church Courier Release In response to the Erskine Fire tragedy the All for One Movement is a united front of many people and organizations partnering to rebuild the community. One of the hardest things in a small community is the ability to organize, effectively communicate and respond in a time of disaster. Many times people and organizations duplicate support efforts ultimately decreasing effectiveness and care for the people who

need it. The All for One Movement is a network of people and organizations united with a common purpose, to help people who are in need as quickly and effectively as possible. Disasters can produce many things, most of which are not good, but one amazing by product of this disaster is something the Movement calls Common Ground, people who partner together for the betterment of the community no matter what it takes. Message of faith

Like a good neighbor Ben Richey, Courier Columnist Upon reading the title of this article, I'm sure many of you imagined, sang, or hummed the jingle; "Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there." In Richey recent years, State Farm launched an ad campaign around that jingle where people who had an accident or loss simply sang the jingle and their agent appeared like a genie from a lamp. The point is that they exercise a true neighborly concern by being there immediately when disaster strikes. For them, presence and service in times of trouble define what it means to be "neighborly." If you have a need, your neighbor has your back. In the Gospels, Jesus had a similar take on being a neighbor. In Matthew 22:36-40, Jesus was asked which commandment was the greatest. He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind…" He then added this side-note: "And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commands depend the Law and the Prophets." In essence, Jesus was saying that to fulfill the spirit of the Law, love God and love your neighbor. In Luke 10, Jesus was asked to clarify, "Who is my neighbor?" Instead of simply answering the question, he told the Parable of the

Good Samaritan to illustrate what it meant to be "neighborly." In the parable, Jesus told of a man who was robbed, stripped of all he had, beaten, and left for dead. Two religious leaders passed by, saw the man, and ignored his need. It wasn't until a Samaritan (a foreigner and supposed enemy) came by and saw him that he found rescue and relief. This Samaritan saw him, had compassion, bound up his wounds, took him to safety, and then promised an inn keeper that he would pay for his long-term care. In other words, he loved his neighbor as himself. It was from this story that Jesus defined "neighbor." Our neighbor is not just the person with which we share a fence, it is any person God places in front of us with a need we can meet. As a community, we have taken a pretty solid punch to the gut. The fires that tore across the southern shore of our lake have left the community scarred and damaged with much need. We have neighbors who have been stripped of all they have and injured; physically, financially, and emotionally. That means now is the time to put love into practice, as it says in 1 John 3:18, "Little children, let us not love in word or talk, but in deed and in truth." I am encouraged to see the immediate outpouring of love and support for those who have lost so much. May we continue to love our neighbors sacrificially in the coming months. Ben Richy is the lead pastor of Kernville First Baptist Church.

Announces G3 gallery closure As President of the Kern River Valley Art Association, it's my sad duty to announce the closing of our G3 Gallery in Kernville, after Friday July 15, 2016. ■ Call to Artists: All artists who have work on display or in storage at the G3 Gallery should make arrangements to remove their artwork. The gallery should be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, through July 15th. The gallery will no longer be open on Thursdays. ■ Public Response: Although we received only about 20 responses to analyze, our recent membership survey questionnaire showed 42% dissatisfaction with the gallery management, as well as issues about transparency between the KRVAA administration (the

Board of Directors) and the membership. 37% felt that a higher quality of artwork should be displayed and 37% also objected to the Look and Feel of the G3 Gallery. There were significant objections to the small size and to the location of our gallery as well. ■ Financial Issues: In addition, the G3 Gallery operates as an expensive Service-to-the-Community, not as a profitable concern or even a Break-Even operation. It is therefore a continuous drain on the financial resources of the KRVAA. Considering the above, as well as the low number of members actively volunteering to help with the many tasks of running our gallery and its affiliated programs, the Board of Directors voted at their last meeting to permanently close the G3 Gallery.

Davis story larger than life Sam Struckhoff Courier Contributor

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Miles Ahead” (R) - Don Cheadle stars, directs and cowrote this out-of-left-field thriller about a great American musician. Repeat: This is not another musical biopic. In the late '70s, the legendary trumpeter dropped off of the map for a while, caught in conflict with his music label and shut up in his New York apartment. Ewan McGregor plays a fictional Rolling Stone reporter who shows up at Davis' door, only to get socked in the face and pulled into a deadly game between the musician and ruthless agents of Columbia Records. You won't get many details or a lot of insight about Davis' life. You will get a strange but engaging portrait of a complicated artist as written, directed and performed by another great artist. It's clear that Cheadle's interest in Davis runs deep, and that manifests onscreen. This story about Davis may be larger than life, but it's built to scale. “Elvis & Nixon” (R) - Based on a bizarro-world photograph that kickstarted the '70s, this short feature looks at the mega-meeting between The King (Michael Shannon) and the The President (Kevin Spacey). With Nixon falling out of touch with a generation he saw as degenerates, his staffers set up a photo-op with the biggest rockstar they can pull: Elvis

"Miles Ahead"

Presley, jumpsuited and past his prime. Shannon steps into a different light from most of his character (usually icy-eyed men of abnormal severity) and creates an Elvis who is a bit wacky, but also multi-dimensional. “Demolition” (R) - After losing his wife in a car accident, Wall Street wonder Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal) doesn't seem like a man in mourning. His feelings start leaking out in letters he writes to the customer-service department of a vending machine company -- he never got the candy he paid for while he waited on his wife in the hospital. Davis' grief also takes the shape of maniacally dismantling every faulty mechanism in his life, from his leaky fridge to a defective door and even taking a hammer to his own house. His letters contain little details about his life that draw attention from Karen (Naomi Watts), a similarly lost soul who helps pull Davis from the brink. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

July is purple ribbon month The Department of Human Services, with support from First 5 Kern, the Kern County Network for Children "Kern Cares" coalition and our local public safety and community partners, are once again launching "Purple Ribbon Month" in memory of Kaitlyn Marie Russell. These events hope to raise public awareness about "Kaitlyn's Law", passed in 2001, that makes it a citable offense for parents to leave children under the age of 6 unattended in a motor vehicle without the supervision of someone at least 12 years of age. The Law was named for 6 month old Kaitlyn Marie Russell, who died on August 15, 2000, after being left behind in a hot van by a caregiver. July is Purple Ribbon Month in memory of Kaitlyn and all the children who have lost their lives to preventable injuries in and around cars, and in order to educate and increase public awareness about all of the dangers of leaving children unattended in or around motor vehicles. Already this year, at least 16 children have died due to hyperthermia nationwide.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The zodiac's Moon Children can expect things to work out pretty much as planned. One negative note involves a minor relationship problem that suddenly turns serious. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You're suddenly being asked to make choices between two practically equal offers. Which one to choose? Easy. The one most likely to gladden your Lion's heart. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Once again, you're confronted by a workplace problem you thought you'd already resolved. This time, you might need to go higher up to find a just resolution.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good for you: You're determined to stick with your goals and ignore those naysayers who might try to discourage you. You're on the right track. The challenge now is to stay on it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You'll soon get news that is supposed to help you with a troublesome situation. Use your sharp Scorpion instincts to determine if the information is reliable. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) If you learn someone has betrayed your trust, don't just accept it and walk away. You need to know why that person decided to do what he or she did. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A painful family relationship problem could finally begin to heal. Be prepared to show more flexibility than you might like. But it could be worth it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It's a good idea to enhance your career skills so you'll be prepared to accept a more responsible position when it's offered. A friend returns a favor just when you need it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Show that strong, steely backbone that you usually hide, and demand to be included in any family decision-making that could affect the well-being of a loved one.

PURSUANT TO CIVIL CODE § 2923.3(a), THE SUMMARY OF INFORMATION REFERRED TO ABOVE IS NOT ATTACHED TO THE RECORDED COPY OF THIS DOCUMENT BUT ONLY TO THE COPIES PROVIDED TO THE TRUSTOR. NOTE: THERE IS A SUMMARY OF THE INFORMATION IN THIS DOCUMENT ATTACHED. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: YOU ARE IN DEFAULT UNDER A DEED OF TRUST DATED 10/13/2005. UNLESS YOU TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY, IT MAY BE SOLD AT A PUBLIC SALE. IF YOU NEED AN EXPLANATION OF THE NATURE OF THE PROCEEDING AGAINST YOU, YOU SHOULD CONTACT A LAWYER. Trustor: Dennis L. Barber. Duly Appointed Trustee: Western Progressive, LLC. Recorded 08/13/2003 as Instrument No. 0203167534 in Book ---, Page --- of Official Records in the Office of the Recorder of Kern County California. Date of Sale: 07/22/2016 at 10:00 AM. Place of Sale: At the front entrance to the City Hall, 1501 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield, California 93301. Estimated amount of unpaid balance and other charges: $25,561.98. WILL SELL AT PUBLIC AUCTION TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER FOR CASH, CASHIER'S CHECK DRAWN ON A STATE OR NATIONAL BANK, A CHECK DRAWN BY A STATE OR FEDERAL CREDIT UNION, OR A CHECK DRAWN BY A STATE OR FEDERAL SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION, A SAVINGS ASSOCIATION OR SAVINGS BANK SPECIFIED IN SECTION 5102 OF THE FINANCIAL CODE AND AUTHORIZED TO DO BUSINESS IN THIS STATE. All right, title and interest conveyed to and now held by the Trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described as: More fully described in said Deed of Trust. Street Address or other common designation of real property: 375 Primavera Street, Ridgecrest, CA 93555, A.P.N.: 508-042-21-00. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above. The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $25,561.98. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder's sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the

opening bid may be less than the total debt. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866) 960-8299 or visit this Internet Website http://www.altisource.com/ MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/TrusteeServices. laspx using the file number assigned to this case: 201600142-CA. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the opening bid may be less than the total debt. Anyone can make mistakes regarding estate matters Nathaniel Sillin Courier Money Adulthood brings certain financial responsibilities like the building of budgets, bank accounts and proper insurance. It's surprising how few consider a proper estate plan part of that essential mix. In fact, a recent ABCNews poll (http://abcnews.go.com/Business/story?i d=86992) found that only about 50 percent of Americans have created a will and significantly fewer have created the supporting estate documents like a living will or a power of attorney. Preparing now for the end of your life or for illness may not sound like fun, but it is necessary. Having a plan for the future can help bring you peace and even put you on the road to stronger financial security. It can also help those you care most about. We've all heard cautionary tales about relatives or friends who did not have a will, and family members who were left with difficult situations. So, how do you start an estate plan? It has a lot to do with carefully drawn documents to make sure your plans fit your needs and the needs of your loved ones. Here's a bit more detail on each. A will, also called a testament, is the starting point. Wills are generally seen as the umbrella document that drives the rest of an individual's estate process. A will generally accomplishes the following: ■ It details how you want to leave your property to specific people. " If you have minor children, it allows you to name a guardian to care for them after you die or become incapacitated. It also indicates who will manage your kids' assets you leave them. ■ It lets you name your executor, the

trusted person who will carry out all your wishes in a will. If you die without a valid will, your state's court system may get involved todistribute assets depending on laws on the books. A living will - also known as an advance directive - allows you to define how you want to be medically treated under specific situations, including irreversible injury or terminal illness. Depending on your state laws, living wills allow you to express your exact wishes about feeding, breathing assistance and other life-sustaining procedures in addition to how you want them carried out in your care. A living will may also provide information on pain or infection medications as well as specific instructions about your remains. Powers of attorney are legal documents that allow you to name a specific person to take care of your money or healthcare wishes if you are incapacitated. It is particularly wise to seek professional counsel from a qualified trust and estates attorney in writing these documents. The person you designate as healthcare power of attorney will be speaking with doctors and executing your wishes on various forms of treatment; your financial power of attorney will be in charge of paying your bills and depending on the range of responsibilities you outline for that person, handling your affairs. Both are extremely important jobs that should be carried out by people you trust, and that's why they need to be people in the know. Bottom line: Estate planning is the final, responsible step in all good financial planning. While it may be unpleasant, it is essential in taking care of family, after you're gone.

Miracle, Continued from page 1 tell firefighters with three or four young guys coming to help. "I will never forget." Here is a synopsis of what happened in John's words: "Just want to say a huge thank you to the entire Dept. Especially to Engine 74 who without hesitation, selflessly and heroically rushed into my bedridden brother's home on Wildmint Dr. as it was being engulfed in the firestorm. You saved four lives that day, as my mother and father were

not going to leave their bedridden son behind and I was not going to leave my parents behind. You arrived in the nick of time when we were about to abandon all hope. Like a huge white angel, Engine 74 and crew appeared through the billowing smoke, exploding propane tanks, with ammo discharging all around. I cannot thank you enough for your courage in the face of immense danger; you went above and beyond the call of duty. My lifelong respect to the entire KCFD and Engine 74.

Heroes, every one of them. I will be writing a letter to the Dept. heads about this situation when things return to normal here in South-lake." "The way things worked out was nothing short of a miracle" Welcher said. Captain Tom Nicoll, Engineer Brian Allen, and Firefighter Ryder White were the crew on Engine 74 from Ridgecrest that day. Engineer Brian Allen's own home in Squirrel Valley was destroyed by the fire while he was saving lives and protecting homes.

Fire debris cleanup planned Michael Batelaan Courier Just in Kern County Public Health hosted a meeting Wednesday evening to help Erskine Fire survivors understand the fire debris cleanup program the County of Kern and the State of California are offering for all those residences affected by the recent fires. The cleanup is funded by State of California emergency funds and grants and offered to alleviate hardship during this time of need and to protect the community from human and environmental health risks. Its purpose is to leave affected properties clean and safe, ready to rebuild. Shawn Smith from California Office of Emergency Services said that this will be the seventh debris operation in California in the last 20 months and almost 3,000 homes have been affected.

The process is for the property owner to complete the Right of Entry form, the contractor will verify the lot and identify the debris field. The form has a place for the property owner to note aspects of their property such as location of wells and septic tanks, special places such as burial plots of beloved pets, and places where the homeowner suspects that there is a possibility of recovering lost items. Next hazardous waste removal, then metal removal. Their protocol is to keep the property damp so there is not a dust issue. Smith also explained how insurance coverage works with the program but insurance is not required to participate. It is not a requirement that property owners utilize this program, but if they decide to do it on their own, they will still have to meet the strict state safety standards to rebuild on their property.
