Ream has five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great, great grandchild in Isabella. Ream remains active and is quite the crafter/inventer making neck pillows, pot scrubbers out of braided nylon; knitting caps for preemies and is pictured with one of the comfort crosses she crafts. “They are to cradle in your hand during prayer and meditation,” she said. She still makes pies. “I do my pie crust in batches and divide it up into packages.” she said. “I always have pie crust if I want to make a pie.” She gave up driving at 94 because she wanted to, Ream had her hip replaced in 2002. Her mother passed at 58. ”I had no idea I would live this long,” she said. Ream attributes her longevity to not eating junk food. “My junk food comes from the garden.”

Suspect reported dead Michael Batelaan Courier Update South Fork residents can rest easier now that a Kern County Sheriff’s Office suspect was confirmed dead Monday by the Kern County Coroner’s office. Benjamin Peter Ashley, was wanted for murder, kidnapping and attempted murder of a peace officer in a crime spree stretching from Twin Oaks to Jawbone Canyon and into Kelso Valley. The ensuing almost three-week, five-square -mile manhunt for the suspect throughout Jawbone Canyon and Kelso Valley and into the Piute Mountains forced road, school and area closures. Ashley was last reported seen in the Valley Friday evening, Aug. 14, retrieving water in the 7000 block of Easy Street in Onyx before retreating into hillside rock outcroppings to the east of the community. It ended the following day, approximately 30 miles away. The manager of Brady’s Mini Mart in Inyokern reported sighting Ashley at 4:30 p.m. purchasing water and snacks in the store. Responding Sheriff duputies encountered Ashley a quarter-mile west where he brandished a handgun at them before being shot and killed.

Whom will you obey? Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist Maybe you've seen people-especially young oneswearing a piece of Obey clothing. As I've encountered folks wearing such apparel, I've commented, "Good Schlensker idea!" And sometimes I even add the question, "So, do you do that?" Responses have varied. Of the founder of Obey clothing, Shepard Fairey, Obey's website reports that, "With biting sarcasm verging on reverse psychology, [Fairey] goads viewers, using the imperative 'obey,' to take heed of the propagandists out to bend the world to their agendas." Indeed, there are plenty of them! So, whom will you obey? In Romans 13:1-5 the apostle Paul asserts, "Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore he who resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be
afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath upon the one who practices evil. Wherefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience ' sake." So we ought to obey the government. However, when the government's actions are contrary to God's word, we have a challenge: whom will we obey? God answers as above, "there is no authority except from God," which, of course, means that God is the ultimate authority! After Jesus' resurrection and ascension into the heavens, the disciples had been imprisoned for healing sick people, casting out demons and proclaiming the name of Jesus in Jerusalem. In obedience to the angel of the Lord they returned to the temple and kept on teaching about Jesus. They were hauled into the temple court again. "And the high priest questioned them, saying, 'We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us.' But Peter and the apostles answered and said, 'We must obey God rather than men'" (Acts 5:27-29). That must be our response as Christians today as well. Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella.

Yes it's a drought, but it's all good!
Kern River Valley Art Association Courier Release
Matt Freeman Courier Columnist
The Kern River Valley Art Association is bringing Fine Art and Crafts this Labor Day weekend for their annual Sierra Arts and Crafts Festival in Circle Park. The Festival runs Saturday September 5 and Sunday September 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and then Monday September 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be lots of vendors, children's crafts and a raffle that includes lots of goodies including Disneyland tickets, and certificates from ten area businesses and more. Also, this year the Kern River Art Association has something special planned, an exhibit of designs submitted for the CREATiVE Bus Shelter Project.
Bass were everywhere and they were big too. There were lots of catfish they would catch them by accident fishing for crappie. A really cool detail as well, is that Lake Isabella had Brown Trout! He would fish for them every fall as they ran up river to spawn out by the golf course and behind the Airport. It was definitely a different time, and one thing made the lake so fertile and rich with life was the structure and trees. Well... take a look at that barren lake bottom. All over the lake, the North Fork and especially the South Fork massive amounts of greenery are filling in. Entire Willow Tree forests are popping up out there, Cottonwoods, sagebrush, big areas of thick weed cover and other vegetation. It is a fisherman's dream, trust me! When this drought ends, and we get a full lake and that stuff gets flooded over, grab your fishing pole: it is going to be awesome. And it will be for a few years it takes a long time for the water to kill that stuff back off and it goes back to a more barren lake bottom. So I am looking forward to that as an angler, a resident and a local business man. I am looking forward to fishing Lake Isabella like it was in the 60's! Matt Freeman is a local resident, businessman and outdoorsman and can be reached at cooltuna12@yahoo.com or 760-223-0880.

Ok... I am the optimist in the room. I have been in this little valley since I was 2 years old, my family and I. We have seen a lot of Freeman trends including past droughts and past times where the lake was so high we were fishing in campgrounds! I will never forget that, wading through Boulder Gulch campground catching big bass from underneath the shady side of picnic tables along with bluegill as big as my hand; that was some fun stuff. As we all know it's painfully obvious that we are in a bad drought right now. The lake is very low; the river is low too but flowing good. I was just at the North Fork of the Kern the other day, it is beautiful up there and there is a lot of water still. The Kern is not going anywhere. Of course we all know the negatives of a drought for the fishery. Low water, higher water temps, potentially less reproduction during the spawn, more fishing pressure due to less water area, etc. Well, I want to speak of the positives and I will start with a story my dad told me about fishing this lake with my grandpa in the 60's. He said the crappie were all 2-3 lbs, every one of them!

A film that's easy to watch Sam Struckhoff Courier Contributor
PICKS OF THE WEEK “I'll See You in My Dreams” (PG-13) -- Carol (Blythe Danner, making an excellent turn as the lead of a film) is a retired teacher and vocalist, whose been living alone since her husband passed 20 years ago. She's trying to find her way without moving into the retirement community with her gal pals. She learns how to enjoy this new phase in her life through an unlikely friendship with her pool cleaner, Lloyd (Martin Starr). While that friendship helps her connect with a lost part of herself, Carol also is drawn into a romance with the handsome and age-appropriate Bill (Sam Elliot. The script cleverly dodges cliches endemic to retirement-age dramas and lets Danner explore every part of her character. The movie as a whole has a great sense of pacing and balance between heavy and light moments, making it a strong film that's easy to watch. “Mad Max: Fury Road” (R) -The Road Warrior rides again in this glorious spectacle of roaring machines and suicidal stunts. Tom Hardy stars as the titular lunatic hero, who starts the film caught in a white-knuckle chase with an army of crazed marauders hot on his dusttrail. Max's life is in the makeshift mechanical hand of the movie's real hero, Imperator Furiosa (an almost unrecognizable Charlize Theron, ruling the screen with a steel grip).

Blythe Danner in "I'll See You in My Dreams" Instead of going the usual reboot-route of giving us another origin story for an already-loved protagonist, this movie has the respect to start us off in the thick of the action and let the pieces of the story jostle into place along the ride -- and it works. If we're going to get a glut of franchise films every year, may there be more like this one: True to what was great about the original, and more than able to rock in their own right. “Boulevard” (R) -- Nolan (Robin Williams) is a quiet man dealing with the passing of his parents and a gap between him and his wife (Kathy Baker). On latenight drives from the nursing home, Nolan is drawn to a young male prostitute. Williams gives a nuanced and restrained performance in this dower drama that's unfortunately weighed down with some cheesy dialog. While this is his last dramatic feature, Williams' final appearance is set to release as a sci-fi comedy. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Talking About Real Estate
How drought affects real estate Matt Freeman Courier Columnist How is the drought affecting the local real estate market and the local economy as a whole? Of course we all Freeman know and can clearly see by looking at Lake Isabella right now that we are in a pretty bad drought. Which we truly hope and pray is over by this winter with El Niño seemingly approaching which usually means plenty of rain and snowpack for California. The drought has affected our local community as well, both in actual tangible ways and in reputation. I have heard folks say things like "there is no water up in the Kern River Valley right now" and "Lake Isabella is dry," which of course is not true. The Kern River looks great and every weekend Kernville is full of folks enjoying the water and Lake Isabella compared to other lakes in central and particularly Southern California has quite a bit of water right now! Plus a little side note, the fishing is really good lately! All this aside, the drought has affected the real estate market here locally in several ways. For instance, many homes that have lake views normally currently do not and of course that will change. I am an eternal optimist and I have been up here my whole life, trends happen good and bad. The drought has also affected
some property values in the area typically those that are real close to the lake are kind of sitting a bit longer on market. Which makes sense, because a big reason to live close to the lake is the lake itself! That also will change though; we will have those high dollar lake properties moving in the market again and just look at all the vegetation out there that is a sight for sore eyes: that lakebed is looking great. On a positive note, I believe personally that the Corps of Engineers project on the Dams is going to maybe hit our economy a bit hard in the short term here locally but in the long term, say the next 5 years or so, be a boom for this little valley. Think about it, two brand new safer updated dams, hopefully, a brand new visitors center, both Chambers of Commerce spending big bucks to advocate all the new infrastructure and improvements to the lake and valley. Not to mention the attention we will receive as the project is ongoing and the boost to local businesses, home sellers and buyer's included, as the contractors and laborers do their thing and spend time up here enjoying this place like all of us locals and visitors do now. This drought is hard and the valley is facing some economic challenges, but in this humble real estate agent's opinion, the grass really is going to be greener on the other side. Now let's get some rain around this place this winter! Matt Freeman is a realtor with Freeman’s Lakeside Realty 760-379-5915 or 760-2230880. His column is not intended to replace legal advice.

ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) This could be the time to try soothing whatever bad feelings might be lingering 'twixt and among colleagues, friends or family members. But be sure you do so without favoring any side. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An idea is only an idea until you put that clever Bovine mind to work to develop it from concept to substance. This could lead to something rewarding, emotionally and monetarily. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The early part of the week could have some disconcerting moments, but approaching them with a calm, unruffled attitude goes a long way toward helping to get things settled down. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Getting used to change continues to mark much of the week. But accepting what you have to do makes adapting that much easier. A welcome visitor could turn up sooner than expected. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Learning how to live with a decision is a challenge, but one you Leos and Leonas could really enjoy. You'll also be pleased to see your social life take that upsurge you've been hoping for. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Use your perceptive Virgo instinct to help you see the positive aspects of what, at first, appears to be a disappointment. You could find that it proves to be quite the contrary.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your ability to maintain a balance between sense and sentiment once again helps you sort through apparently conflicting choices and ultimately arrive at the right decision. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before you seek the advice of colleagues about a potential career move, you might be better off getting counsel from someone who won't be affected by the choices you make. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It can be a challenging week for some relationships if the normal give-and-take flow changes with one side doing most of the giving and the other taking. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A new opportunity could bring with it much anticipation along with some anxiety. Take time to sort out your options as well as your emotional considerations. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Are you sure you have all the facts you need to let that matter move to another level? Don't be rushed into a decision unless and until you feel it's the right thing to do. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Pace yourself as you prepare to take on that more demanding project. Be careful not to let your energy reserves drain away. Take time to relax with people close to you.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the opening bid may be less than the total debt. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
