Ready or not... Fall equinox to arrive
The September equinox arrives on September 23, 2015 at 1:21 a.m. PDT. In the Northern Hemisphere, the sun is rising later now, and nightfall comes sooner. This is our autumn equinox, when the days are getting shorter in the Northern Hemisphere. At this equinox, day and night are approximately equal in length. For us in the Northern Hemisphere, people are enjoying the cooler days of autumn even as prepa-

Northern Hemisphere, you can easily notice the later dawns and earlier sunsets. Birds and butterflies are migrating southward too, along with the path of the sun. Creatures of the wild are putting on their winter coats. All around us, trees and plants are ending this year's cycle of growth. Perhaps they are responding with glorious autumn leaves or a last burst of bloom before winter comes. In the night sky, Fomalhaut - the Autumn Star - is making its way across the heavens each night.
At the equinoxes, the sun appears overhead at noon. That's why the sun rises due east and sets due west for all of us. The sun is on the celestial equator, and the celestial equator intersects all of our horizons at points due east and due west. This fact makes the day of an equinox a good day for finding due east and due west from your yard or other favorite site for watching the sky. Just go outside around sunset or sunrise and notice the location of the sun on the horizon with respect to familiar landmarks. If you do this, you'll be able to use those landmarks to find those cardinal directions long after Earth has moved on in its orbit around the sun, carrying the sunrise and sunset points southward.

The name 'equinox' comes from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night). But, since Earth never stops moving around the sun, these days of approximately equal sunlight and night will change quickly. Caltrans, CDFW and Defenders of Wildlife offer a few tips for motorists: ■ Be especially alert when driving in areas frequented by wildlife and reduce your speed so you can react safely. ■ Pay particular attention when driving during the morning and evening as wildlife are most active during these times. ■ If you see an animal cross the road, know that another may be following. ■ Don't litter. The odors may entice animals to venture near roadways.

Daily I am reminded that my wife and I live in a rural area where we are visited by many birds and animals. The following is a true story Middleworth that happened last week. We live on the crest of a hill that overlooks Isabella Lake and as part of that crest about 50 feet from our doorstep is a feeding station. We give peanuts to the grey squirrels, feed and water to just about anything else in a feeding pan. We have hummingbirds, finch, quail, blue jays, mockingbirds, ravens, raccoons, grey foxes, and other wild creatures. The only unwelcome beast is the "ground squirrel". The damage they can do to a lawn and other areas around the yard is uncanny. Consequently, I use a "have-aheart" trap which I load with peanuts and use to trap those little ground devils. Usually at night I trip the bale wire on the trap so that it does not catch any animals. There are lots of nocturnal creatures that visit us each evening that we don't want to accidentally catch. That particular night last week, I forgot to trip the wire and the trap remained ready to catch some unwary animal! The next morning as I was putting out feed for all my
friends, I noticed that my trap had been jiggled around. So I walked over, bent down to see what I had accidentally caught. BIG MISTAKE! It was a skunk and he was mad! To show me his displeasure, he liberally sprayed me before I could move. At that point, as I ran screaming towards the house, I took off my shirt, my shorts, my drawers, and fumbled around with my shoes and socks, yelling at Vicki to turn on the shower I was coming in! For the next ten minutes, it was shower, soap, scrub, rinse and then soap, scrub, rinse and then soap again and again. After the fifth shower I was reasonably presentable and only slightly odoriferous. My wife said, "You are not putting those clothes in my machine!" So we put them in a plastic bag, fastened with a tie, and threw them in the trash-can. Then I was faced with the problem of letting that skunk go without his greeting me again with his special sauce. Here's what I did. I took a big towel and covered the trap (with the enclosed creature) then I tipped the trap upside down, what this does is release the end wire so that the skunk could push his way to freedom. The last time I saw that rascal he was running westerly and I was running easterly. My guess is that the skunk will never eat peanuts again and you can be sure that I will never forget to check my trap at night. October 13, 1934 to September 6, 2015 Dick Snyder was born in Nitro, West Virginia to Earl Francis Snyder and Janet Ethel Snyder. He was the youngest of five children. He spent his youth there and joined the U.S. Navy after graduating from Nitro High School. He attended West Virginia State College after his tour in the military. A Navy buddy had convinced him to move to California. He loved California and was happy to leave the cold weather in West Virginia. Dick worked at Hughes Aircraft in Culver City, Fullerton and then in El Segundo and held many positions. He married his wife, Virginia and they resided in Hermosa Beach with their three children. Dick was a big fan of spectator sports and followed his favorite football, basketball and baseball teams. He bowled on two leagues, play a little golf, had a few collections he enjoyed and he loved to dance. He was actively involved with his children's youth sports team activities. After retiring from Hughes Aircraft, Dick and Virginia purchased an ownership at R-Ranch/Johnsondale, and became familiar with the Kern River Valley. In 2000 they make Kernville their home. Dick volunteered on the Boat Patrol and joined the Historical Society which was what he loved most about his time here. He opened and closed the KRV Museum and was an active docent. He enjoyed meeting people from all over the world, giving tours and working with a variety of the best people in the Valley. He was the popcorn maker on movie night in the summertime. Dick solved problems of the world on many mornings with a great group of guys over at Big Blue Bear. He loved joking with the many people he knew in town, he will be missed by many. Dick is survived by his wife Virginia, his children Beth Taylor, Adam Snyder and Rick Snyder; grandchildren Michael Taylor, Hayley Taylor, Tessa Taylor, Tatianna Bourget, Chandler Snyder, Trinity Snyder and great-grandson Ayden. He is also survived by his brother Earl Snyder, Jr., his wife Mary and many nieces and nephews. Services for Dick will be held Friday, October 2 at 2 p.m. at Bakersfield National Cemetery. A "Celebration of Life" will be held Sunday Oct. 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the KRV Museum Pack Station in Kernville. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the KRV Historical Society.

Faith - Weak or Strong? Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist Is your faith weak or strong? It probably depends on the day. All believers in Jesus have their moments of doubt as well as their times of rocksolid belief; their Schlensker faith vacillates between feeble and robust. So did the man in Mark 9:14-29, whose son was demon-possessed. In response to Jesus' assertion that all things are possible to/for a person who believes, he said, (my translation) "Lord I believe; please help me with respect to my unbelief!" This man was struggling in his faith, because of the affliction that had come upon his son, and on account of Jesus' disciples' inability to cast the demon out. He was really wondering about this power-ofGod stuff and whether is it was accessible to him. And he discovered it was! Jesus, Himself, cast the demon out and restored that man's son's speech and personhood. The disciples had likely been unable to cast out the demon because they'd been attempting to provide God's power as if it were their own, gratifying their own prestige and pride. Jesus told them with respect to their failure that (this) exorcism depended upon "prayer" (i.e. on total and complete dependence on God). After all, that's where the ultimate power resides; God is its only source. Jesus' message was to trust
Him, to believe in Him, to have faith in Him. Such faith is severely disparaged in our day by atheistic propaganda, which suggests that biblical creation is "total nonsense" and that "Darwin was right!" and billboards that say, "IN THE BEGINNING, MAN CREATED GOD. There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life," and "Are you good without God? Millions are." The assessment of God stuff as "total nonsense" turns out to be completely nonsensical, itself, because it denies wellestablished historical fact and negates the possibility of peace and eternal security that can only come by letting God be God and through a faith relationship with Him. And any faith, weak or strong, will save a person! The atheist's assertion that "There's probably no God" intrigues me. It allows a possibility that there is … a God. And if there is-and there's some really good evidence for that, like the well-witnessed exorcism in Mark 9-then He is the ultimate authority, and He is the only source of healing for everything that's wrong with the world. Only He can cast out the demons. And only through a saving relationship with Him is there any hope for the eternal future beyond our existence on this planet. Without Him, He says, there's eternal misery. So, considering the odds against the notion that there is no God, the question becomes, "Are you willing to take that chance?" Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella.

Reporting resource violations faster Andrew Hughan, CDFW Courier 4-1-1 Several hunting seasons are approaching and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is asking the public to use technology - rather than social media - to report wildlife and pollution crimes across the state. "We often get reports of violations and other very good tips sent to CDFW through social media, but our Twitter and Facebook sites are not directly monitored by wildlife officers," said Lt. Mike Milotz, CDFW CalTip Program Coordinator. "There are several ways for the public to report issues directly to us in real time, including a CalTIP phone number, a smart phone app, direct text message capability and our website." All reports can be completely anony-
mous, as the technology removes all identifying information before wildlife officers see the tips. The public can report violations or concerns in the following ways: ■ By Phone at 888-334-2258 or 888-334CALTIP ■ CalTIP app (free via Google Play and iTunes App stores) ■ Text to 847-411 and a wildlife officer can respond directly. (begin your message with "Caltip," followed by details) ■ CDFW's website: dfg.ca.gov/enforcement/caltip.aspx ■ Call 911 CDFW law enforcement reminds people to never put their safety in jeopardy or try to stop a suspected crime. Report it as soon as possible, including a description of the people, equipment and vehicles involved.

Catch Kern County Fair display if you catch ‘watering cans’ Pam Stewart Courier Must see
Kern River Courier publisher Michael Batelaan will be flooding the Kern County Fair's Home Arts Building with his massive collection of watering cans, as part of the Fair's floriculture exhibit this year from Wednesday, Sept. 5 through Sunday Oct. 4. Batelaan began collecting watering cans at age 14. The fascination was inspired by his late grandfather. "I spent much time with him as a kid in around his greenhouses while he tended to them," he said. "Now my lifetime of collecting exceeds 400 in number, most of which will be on display at the Fair. To display them in one place now requires more than one truck and trailer trip up and down Highway 178 through the Kern River Canyon. The collection started with greenhouse/garden variety cans, Batelaan's collection now ranges from miniatures, children's toys, kitchen/household, yard and garden to those for professional use. Aging from historic turn of the century, steam engine railroad/tractor era, gas service station to the present day decorative, modern, and new. The watering cans are made of plastic, ceramic, tin, copper, brass, galvanized and stainless steel and are painted, enameled, glazed or plated. It is a collection from around the world with some dating back to the 1800s. The exhibit hours of The Home Arts Building exhibit hours are Monday through Thursday from 3 to 9:45 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from noon to 9:45 p.m.

When the Bond-like agents fall Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “Spy” (PG-13) -- Melissa McCarthy stars as a CIA agent launched from her usual office-work into the field of high-stake espionage. Susan (McCarthy) normally watches over her CIA colleagues, feeding vital information from a secluded office. When all the more Bond-like agents fall, the Company's best bet is to send in Susan, the last person the bad guys would suspect of being a spy. Jason Statham does an excellent parody of his usual badass character, and Rose Byrne nails it as a haughty Euro-villain who trades eloquent insults with the more grounded McCarthy. Melissa McCarthy gets back on her feet after some flopular turns in less-funny movies like "Tammy." The laughs in this movie show that she hasn't hit the edges of what she's capable of. It's also another gold star for director Paul Feig, who worked with McCarthy on "Bridesmaids" and has my hopes up for the new "Ghostbusters" movie he's directing. “Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron” (PG-13) -- Genius inventor and Iron Man, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), creates a powerful artificial intelligence that's supposed to keep the peace. The program, Ultron (voiced by James Spader), concludes that peace on earth starts with killing the Avengers. of intense battles with evil forces and each other. Also joining the fray are Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, superpowered siblings from the X-Men world. These characters are more developed than the last time, and there are more of them, but that doesn't produce the same fun atmosphere. What once was a box-office blast starts to look like another "Expendables" sequel with brighter colors. It's still an exciting flick, but Marvel had better learn some new tricks before getting the gang back together again. “Entourage” (R) -- As somebody who never watched the show on HBO, I wasn't sure if this was a movie or somebody's exercise in getting as many confusing cameos as possible. Of the characters who aren't cameos, there's a young actor guy named Vince (Adrian Grenier), and we're asked to care about the future of his Hollywood career. The poor, bland guy is just a few million short of finishing his terrible-looking Jekyll and Hyde remake, while the other characters around him -- all sporting silly bro-names as if being a man with friends makes you a fighter pilot -- confirm that it truly is a great movie worth making.

PDP Annual Enrollment Harry P. Thal Courier Columnist Part 1: Last week I discussed the Annual Enrollment Period for the Medicare Advantage HMO plans. Today I shall Thal discuss the Prescription Drug Plans under Medicare Part D. Everybody on Medicare does not need a Part D plan, but most people should have it. If you don't need medication and are on Medicare, there are very low cost plans available. While not required, there is a penalty for not having coverage if you ever in the future need to have the coverage. It is 1 percent of the average national Part D premium. In 2015 this is $33.13. You are allowed to be without a "Creditable Drug Plan" for no longer than two months. To calculate the penalty, add up the number of months you went without coverage. Roberta is 85 and now needs prescription coverage. She needs to wait until the open enrollment begins, and her coverage won't start until Jan. 1. While she has been on Medicare for two decades, the prescription plan has been available since 2006. So, as she didn't have "creditable coverage" from an employer plan, did not have coverage from the Veterans Administration nor is she on a poverty program, she will be subject to the penalty. She will be penalized for 10 years having gone without coverage for 120
months. She is entitled to two months off, so the penalty will be 118 months or 118 percent times $39.10. Her penalty for waiting is $46.14. This cost will be added to the cost of the plan she now needs, and will be billed by the private insurance company on behalf of the government. This penalty will be ongoing for as long as she remains on a prescription drug plan. If you are in a Medicare Advantage HMO plan with prescription drugs included, and you did not have prior "creditable" drug coverage, you may also subject to the penalty. The prescription drug program you are currently on will mail out the "Annual Notice of Change" booklet as well as a plan formulary and other 2016 information by September 30. The information for the new year is all there, but so voluminous that many people either toss it on arrival, or set it aside and it never gets opened. BIG MISTAKE! The insurance company may have raised its monthly premium, increased the cost of drugs, shifted your medication to a higher (or lower) tier, or it may have new restrictions such as "Prior Authorization" or added "step therapy" before they will pay. Some plans may now have a new restriction on the quantity that can be filled. The way I see it, the only thing that may be the same as your 2015 plan could be just its name. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker in California (0621106) Thal is on the National Association of Health Underwriters Medicare Advisory Board. Closures may continue for longer periods of time each day if necessary, due to delays caused by weather or uncontrollable events that may occur during construction. This scheduled closure will occur, weather permitting. Portable message signage will be in place advising motorists of the construction operations and detour routes. Motorists are expected to obey all traffic laws and stay alert for road maintenance vehicles and construction personnel. Remember to please be alert for construction personnel and "Slow for the Cone Zone."
Manzanar mysteries revealed This month's Historical Society community meeting will include discussion regarding the Manzanar Historic Site. Historian Patricia Biggs will present the short film Remembering Manzanar and give a talk with "then and now" photos from Manzanar's messy, relevant, and powerful history. Manzanar National Historic Site is a square mile of desert in the Owens Valley that resonates with the stories of several cultural groups going back thousands of years. The Owens Valley Paiutes, Homesteaders, an orchard community named Manzanar after the Spanish word "manzana" for apple, later sold to Los Angeles for the water rights. During WWII, the Army leased the site and built barracks, mess halls, and latrines to house 11,070 people of Japanese descent. On March 3, 1992, Congress designated it as Manzanar National Historic Site with the mission of preserving its cultural resources and educating visitors. The program will be September 22 beginning at 7 p.m. in the Senior Center, Lake Isabella. Admission is always free, everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served. For more information contact the museum at 760-376-6683 or on the web at kernvalleymuseum.org

ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) Although practical situations continue to dominate this week, there's time for the Lamb to indulge in the fun things in life -- like maybe taking a special someone out for a great evening. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week favors relationships. Take time to renew old ones, and make time to go where new friends can be found. On a more practical note, expect news about a business deal. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should be seeing some progress on that new workplace situation. Meanwhile, family matters might demand more attention, and you'll want to set aside time to deal with them. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A relationship suddenly might present some challenges you never expected. After talking things out, you might want to consider taking some time to assess what you've learned. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A once-volatile situation should be settled by now, giving you a chance to refocus on a project you've been planning for. Look for an interested party to rally to your support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A oncevolatile situation should be settled by now, giving you a chance to refocus on a project you've been planning for. Look for an interested party to rally to your
support. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business matter that unexpectedly turns into a personal situation could create complications. Best to resolve the matter now before too much harm can be done. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Emotions can run high when they involve personal matters that no one really wants to talk about. But this could be a good time to create the means to a workable outcome. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A positive response to a workplace request could lead the way to other long-sought changes. Congratulations. A personal situation also takes a welcome turn. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Patience pays off, as that once-overwhelming work situation continues to become easier to handle on a one-by-one basis. Look for positive news from a colleague. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It might be a good idea to take more time to reassess your next move in working out a complex situation. You could benefit from a new perspective on the matter. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might want to consider making time to discuss a change of plans with everyone concerned. Be prepared to explain your actions. Also be prepared to listen to alternatives. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the opening bid may be less than the total debt. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. All right, title and interest conveyed to and now held by the Trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described as: More fully described in said Deed of Trust. Street Address or other common designation of real property: 4800 Stancliff Court, Bakersfield, CA 93307, A.P.N.: 171-28012-00. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property.
