Bike Park gets work Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier

Michael Batelaan/Kern River Courier

Fencing is unloaded at the Kernville Bike Park Saturday morning by Doug Rothert and Lanny Borthick. The materials, transportation and labor were donated by local people.

The Kernville Bike Park has taken another step forward with the donation of 1,400 feet of fencing materials. A wholesale purchase of the materials was arranged and a volunteer went to Las Vegas with a truck to pick them up. The labor to install the fencing was also donated. The non-profit South Fork School and Community Foundation recently changed their mission statement to include intergenerational recreation, and is now attempting to become the bike park’s fiscal agent.

Right on the heels of recent changes in media company ownership in the Kern River Valley comes the announcement of another. America's Best Media LLC of Media, Penn. has announced the purchase of KRV Publishing/Kern River Courier for an undisclosed amount. "We found everything that we look for in a small town community newspaper when we discovered the Kern River Courier," said John Truspeke, CEO of ABM. "ABM selects only the best media companies (to acquire), and KRV Publishing is now in the company of the best newspaper, radio, outdoor advertising and television properties across smalltown America," said Michael Batelaan and Mike Devich, publishers of the Kern River Courier, Whiskey Flat Claim Jumper and Kern Angler publications. “We are proud to be a part of this media network.” Batelaan had an added message for concerned Courier readers in regard to the transfer. "Look at the date of this week's issue," he said. "Does April 1 mean anything to you?"

Courier co-publisher Michael Batelaan will be displaying his large collection of watering cans at the Lake Isabella ibrary from Tuesday April 5 through the month of May. Batelaan started collecting watering cans at age 14. The fascination with watering cans was inspired by his late grandfather. “I spent much time with him as a kid in around his greenhouses while he tended to them. Now my collection exceeds over 200. To display them in one place now requires several pickup truck trips.” The watering cans are made of plastic, ceramic, tin, copper, brass, galvanized and stainless steel and are painted, enameled, glazed or plated. Some date back to the 1800s. The hours at the Lake Isabella library are Tuesday and Thursday 11:00am to 7:00pm and Saturday 9:00am to 5:00pm. Closed Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Story of tragedy in Japan continues Mike Devich Kern River Courier

Last week the Courier brought you Part 1 of a story from inside northern Japan by one who was there, a family member of mine named Ivo. She’s a medical researcher at a university hospital in Iwate Prefecture. Her apartment was a wreck after the 9.0 offshore earthquake, and here we rejoin her story as she struggles to find supplies in her quake-ravaged apartment. It is a reminder for all of us to have emergency supplies where we can find them in the event of a disaster. Ivo is a native of Indonesia, and no attempt has been made to correct her English. “Finally, I crawled out of under the table and tried to remember what to put in my emergency bag. I cursed myself for not remembering where I put my flashlight and for not having extra batteries. I put as many stuff as I remember in my backpack. Bottled water, extra socks, my medicine, towel, passport, gloves, mask, phone charger, emergency toiletries, cleared the exit, and set aside all breakable things, grabbed some blankets and camped under the table with my back pack and a bottle of water by my side. “Aftershocks after aftershocks still came, and each time it came, my heart jumped and raced, and I just closed my eyes hoping it would stop soon. It felt like hours and hours, and I was contemplating if I should go to Ueda to Ria’s house.

But each time I crawled out of under the table, another big aftershock came, and I finally curled under the table, and sent a message to Christina, my neighbor, to check if she was home. She and Krysta, my other neighbor were still at work, but Christina told me she would bang on my door once she got home. “So I sat there, talking to my friends using internet connection that was still on, and wait for Christina and Krysta to come home. “At around 5 PM, finally Christina knocked on my door, and I have never been so relieved to see someone in my life. She, Krysta and I decided to stay at Christina’s apartment during the black-out. This is the first time for me to be in a major disaster, but not for Christina. She went through hurricane in Florida once, and went through weeks without power. “She asked me to bring my game board and some food, so I went back inside, grabbed my Monopoly board, some tortilla chips, salsa, chocolate biscuits, and blankets. Before I left, I put my thickest coat (it was snowing), gloves, ear muffs, backpack, and my water resistant boots by the door, kept the door opened and went next door. “I felt so much better already, having my friends there, and didn’t have to be alone anymore. “We sat on the floor with blankets, ate the snacks and talked about what happened. Gas was

Exhume your old Apple computer

Potter film arrives on DVD

Larry Cox Courier Syndicated Columnist

Q: I recently heard on CNN that an old computer had been sold for a great deal of money. I have an Apple II, which was made between 1982 and 1988, in perfect condition, with printer and several software discs. How much is it worth? -- P.G., Albuquerque, N.M. A: I monitored eBay for about two weeks and think your computer is probably worth in the $200 to $350 range. Typical was an Apple II with several hundred discs, original documents in binder, joystick and "tons of extras." There were 19 bids, the highest $215. I also found an Apple II with "extras" and in original box for $150. *** Q: Recently my mother died at the age of 96. She had a lovely home, decorated beautifully with Early American decor. I am considering disposing of many of these items at a garage sale, but I do not want to sell something for 50 cents that is worth $50. How do I find someone who can provide me with values that I can trust? -Christie, Rio Rancho, N.M. A: You should hire a certified appraiser who has expertise in determining the values of both household and estate items. Use the business pages of the phone book to

find appraisers in your region. Call several to find one that you feel comfortable with. Don't be hesitant to ask for references, and expect to pay a fee for his or her help. There are generally two types of appraisals, written and verbal. A written appraisal is often itemized and costs a little more than a verbal assessment. When I liquidated my mother's estate several years ago, my sister and I avoided the stress of garage sales by making donations to local charities. *** Q: I have a large collection of records from the 1940s to the mid-1970s. Do they have any value? -- Barry, Brooklyn, N.Y. A: You need to invest in a good price guide. Three I especially like, all by Tim Neely, are the Goldmine Standard Catalogue of American Records 1950-1975 (Krause, $34.99); Goldmine Record Album Price Guide (Krause, $24.99); and Goldmine Price Guide to 45 RPM Records (Krause, $24.99). *** Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Courier Fishing Report

More trout coming Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier columnist

Local resident Jack Bonham and his granddaughter Savanna proved that getting a line wet produces results while fishing at the Main Dam Sunday afterMike Mencarini noon. Who says that taking a kid fishing can’t be fun? The Anglers Choice Bass Club tourney on Saturday did well, with 8 boats entered. The Alber brothers won the contest with five fish weighing 25 pounds. There were several other bass hitting the scales over 9 pounds, in really windy conditions I might add. This is a pretty good indicator the lake is coming around. The crappie and catfish bites have been slow. The warmer

The

weather we are now experiencing should change that. On Wednesday the KRV Chamber stocked 1,200 pounds of Alpers trout in the lake at Red’s Marina launch area. There will be ome more truckload of Alpers due to be stocked before the fishing derby April 16-18. Thanks to Fred Roach and his crew and the KRV Chamber. It’s only a couple of weeks until the derby. If you need to register or order caps, T-shirts or buy tickets to win that Lowes fully rigged bass boat, now is the time to get going. If possible, let’s spend our derby dollars in our community. The local merchants really do appreciate the support.

Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It isn't always easy for the you to give a second thought to your often spur-of-the-moment choices. But aspects favor rechecking a decision before declaring it final. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Information emerges for the business-driven Bovine who feels ready to restart a stalled project. Be prepared to make adjustments as needed at any time. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Part of you wants to complete plans for an upcoming event, while your other self wants to see how things develop first. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An unexpected change in a relationship could open up a problem or could lead to a much-needed and too-long-delayed reassessment of a number of matters. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Time for the Lion to total the plusses and minuses resulting from recent personal and/or professional decisions. See what worked, what didn't and why. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The clever Virgo can make persuasion work by presenting a case built on hard facts. Sentiment might touch the heart, but it's good, solid information that invariably wins the day. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You usually can win over the most stubborn skeptics on your

own. But this time you can benefit from supporters who have been there, done that and are willing to speak up on your behalf. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You win admiration for your determination to do the right thing. Don't be distracted from that course, despite the offer of tempting alternatives that might suddenly turn up. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While you still need to maintain control of a dominant situation, a new development emerges, making the task easier and the outcome more rewarding. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) New factors might have a positive effect on a still-pending matter, but only if the information proves to be credible. Colleagues might be able to offer needed advice. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The week favors moderation, especially if a health problem is involved. Resist the impulse to do more than might be good for you at this time. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You could feel more than a mite upset by someone or some people who might be creating problems for you. Find out why they won't change their ways. Their reasons might surprise you. BORN THIS WEEK: You know how to inspire others to do their best by setting a persuasive example of your own. c) 2011King Features Synd., Inc.

Turning 65, Part 2

Stine Point revisited

Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist

Last week I discussed the process of applying to Social Security to enroll in Medicare. The next logical step would be to discuss the cost of Medicare. Part A, the hospital benefit, has been prepaid by most people who have worked for a mini- Harry Thal mum of 40 quarters. Many others may purchase Part A for $461 per month. If you have between 30 and 39 quarters, you pay $254 a month. (2011; rates change annually.) Part B of Medicare typically costs $115 in 2011 for those of us new to Medicare, or are paying monthly (billed quarterly) for the past few years. Those people receiving Social Security retirement benefits are normally having the Medicare deducted from their benefit payments. They are paying $96.40 or $110.50 depending on when they enrolled. Part B of Medicare has an annual deductible of $162 (2011) and then pays 20% of an amount deemed reasonable by Medicare. The patient is responsible for the remaining 20% and any excess charges a physician may charge (not to exceed 15%). There are several ways to protect yourself from these out of pocket expenses. Each has positives and

negatives. One method is to join a "Medicare Advantage" plan such as an HMO. There are several to choose from. Most of these plans cover prescription drugs, and in Kern County, most plans have a $0 monthly cost. You must choose a "primary care physician" when applying, and this person becomes the "quarterback." The doctor makes all the calls from the specialists recommended to the hospital confinement. These referrals are typically within his/her own medical group. Referrals to outside specialists are rare. For each service, you make a co-payment. Most plans are capped at $6,000 - $7,000 per year. The major trade off on this type of plan is that you are paying $0 a month (except for Part B Medicare premiums), but you lost choice in specialists, clinics and hospitals. There is another Medicare Advantage plan, called a Medicare PPO. This plan has a $0 premium, but higher co-pays when you use services. However, you have greater choice in referrals. Next week I will discuss what I bought for myself. It fits my lifestyle better, allowing me greater choice and travel options.

Ron Bolyard Kern River Courier Columnist

After almost a three-month hiatus from my December visit to the site of the slump failure of Sierra Way at Stine Point, I decided to have a personal look at the progress that has been made by the county in the Ron Bolyard repairs of Sierra Way around the north side of Isabella Lake.d It is obvious that the county has done extensive heavy equipment work in covering the approximately 100-yard blemish that was once a passable roadway. It was a pleasant surprise to see that the county may achieve

its goal of reopening the road by Memorial Day. Kudos go to Kern County! As I was viewing this work, I noticed about four other places where it might happen again (albeit smaller) if additional rains occur. It is prudent for all who will eventually drive this road again to be watchful of future slumping movements within these suspect area. Robinson Point should also be watched. The photo shows an area of Stine Point that appears to have slumped six to eight inches since December. Ron Bolyard is a retired geologist and has developed an “acute interest” in the geology of the southern Sierra Nevada since he moved here in 1999.

Falling for Food ... Channel Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist

I have found a new interest. I've fallen into the clutches of the Food Channel. On program after program I watch master chefs creating dishes with visuals that I can almost taste. I've fallen under the spell of Cupcake Middleworth Wars, Iron Chef, Unique Eats, Foodography, Last Cake Standing and scores more. My favorite program is Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The star of that show goes from place to place all across the United States tasting unique food that the establishment is famous for. He's always trying the main course – be it sliders or 4-pound breakfasts – and then exclaiming that “this dish is the best thing since sliced bread!” Food is running down his chin as he wolfs another bite. Great stuff to watch! One show has some guy who wanders across Europe and the Far East eating horrible stuff that is like dessert to the natives. Last week he ate fried tarantula and exclaimed how good it was. "Like crunchy grasshoppers," he said. (That's good?) But I watched anyway! Some of the lady cooks are really foxy looking. I hardly notice that, of course, and

instead I zero in on the recipes. I've have noticed that Rachel Ray cooks 30 minute meals that look a lot better than mine – and it takes me an hour and a half. Do I really think she can do 30 minute meals? No, I don't. Does she ever burn stuff? She must. And she never spills anything on the Sunday frock she wears while preparing 9-course dinners! (Do you think they might be editing the bad stuff out?) On “Iron Chef” they pit two master chefs against each other and give them an hour to prepare a gourmet meal. What they don't tell you and if you're careful you'll see, is that they have a ton of helpers running around doing the scut work, who get no credit for helping the stars! In fact, they get yelled at a lot. On one show called “Dinner Impossible,” dinner looks impossible but somehow gets done while the star badgers the help. Then when the perfect meal is served to a thousand guests, the star goes out and takes a bow (and the credit). Food shows are fun to watch and even more fun to emulate. But for me to obtain the same results, it's usually “Dinners Impossible.” Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.

Japan continued from page 1 still running so we could boil some water and had hot tea. We saw the footage through Christina’s phone about the Tsunami and we realized how lucky we were. I felt so ashamed for crying earlier, knowing that there were people out there who had to go through a way way bigger disaster than I did. “We opened the board and played Monopoly for a while, and then a big aftershock came, and we jumped under the table. I guess we were still traumatized of what had been happening, and it started to get really really cold, so we decided to look for a shelter instead of staying in our apartment. While Christina and Krysta collecting their stuff into their emergency bag, I went down stair and knocked on our landlord’s door to ask them about the nearest shelter. Bless them, they were home, and they explained to me how to get to the nearest shelter, even though they told me probably it was warmer if we stayed inside our apartment, as they were’t sure if the shelter had heaters. The landlord’s wife gave me heat patch and she told me to put it on my stomach to help me to stay warm. My first reaction was, don’t you need it for yourself? But she reassured me that they had enough and I really should take some. It was my first of many experiences about how nice and selfless these people here during this disaster. “Despite what the landlord told us, we decided to try to go the nearest shelter anyways, plus, we were still terrified of the big aftershocks. And sure enough, when we got there, some city hall officers greeted us and told us that they had beds there, for people who were afraid to stay at their home, but there was no heaters nor water. While we were there, a car approached, and the driver rolled the window down, and it was our landlord! Apparently, he was worried about us, and decided to go to the shelter and checked the condition himself. After talking to the city hall officers for a while, the landlord told us that he was pretty sure that our apartment building was safe enough, and it would be much warmer to stay there than to stay at the shelter. He drove us back to the apartment, and before we went up, he reminded us that water would be out soon since our water came from the reservoir tank at the top floor, and since there was no power, the pump would not work, so we had to get the water from the first floor (I live on the 5th floor). Well, that was another problem, but remembering how lucky we were compared to the tsunami victims, we felt like it was a very small price to pay. “We went back to my apartment and decided all three of us would sleep at my apartment. With Krysta’s flashlight and my one and only candle, we arranged our futons, blankets to make the ‘slumber party’ as warm and comfortable as possible. We were pretty tired that night from all the stress, so we decided to go to bed early. before I went to bed, I sent another mail to my loved ones, and checked on my friends’ conditions. I still couldn’t get a hold of Ria but my friend in Ueda said Ueda area was OK. I was so happy to read that most of my friends were OK. My friend Jamie’s wife, Yoshiko, was stucked in Sendai, but at least she managed to messaged Jamie and told him she was OK. “Two big aftershocks, countless small-medium aftershocks, and some restless sleep later, we finally survived the Black Friday.” (But it was not over. Next week Ivo will tell us, via her blog, of coping with the aftereffects of the quake and tsumami.)
