24th Annual derby fish
Stocked and loaded Michael Batelaan Courier Cover story Thousands of fishermen will converge Isabella Lake this weekend for 24th Annual Isabella Lake Fishing Derby, being called the world’s largest amateur trout derby. They are coming for the many contests and prize categories and many more national sponsors in this year’s derby. The 2013 derby, to be held April 20 through April 22, will feature a quarter of a million dollars in prizes. This year’s derby has ten major sponsors, plus many local businesses and individuals have sponsored fish. For over 20 years the Isabella Lake Fishing Derby has offered a $10,000 tagged trout to be caught, but just in the last few years it has mushroomed into what some are calling the biggest amateur trout derby in the world. Now there is one $20,000 trout (that could be worth $40,000), ten $10,000 trout, two $500 trout, two $250 trout, and four $200 trout. The Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce, which puts on the derby, will have a trout valued at $20,000, but if the registered angler who catches that trout is wearing an official Isabella Lake Fishing Derby tee-shirt or hoodie at the time, the value of the prize doubles to $40,000. Purchase your shirt or hoodie early, because

In addition, a fullyequipped Lowe Suncruiser pontontoon boat will be raffled off by the Derby in conjunction with the Kern River Valley Chamber and Galey’s Marine Supply in Bakersfield. In addition to the tagged trout, there is also a Longest Trout contest. The prizes for longest trout are First, $1,000; Second, $500;

Contemplating mountains Dan Schlensker, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella I recently moved to the Kern River Valley. This is the first time I have ever lived surrounded by anything like mountains. Mountains have their own rugged Schlensker beauty and inspire a sense of awe. It’s probably no accident that mountains figure so prominently in the Bible. In Psalm 121 (NAS), the psalmist says, “I Will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From whence shall my help come? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth.” That suggests that as he observes the magnificence of the creation, this poet is reminded of the Creator. He is also moved, through contemplating the mountains’ splendor, to trust that amazingly creative Being, and to believe that the God, who created such awesome stuff, is actually mindful of him. In the second book of the Bible (Exodus), Mt. Sinai is featured as the site where God established his Old

Covenant (testament) with His people, where He delivered to Moses the 10 Commandments on tablets of stone. Mountains are reminders of God’s promise to that multitude there at the foot of that mountain that they would be His people and He would be their God. In Deuteronomy 11, Mt. Gerezim & Ebal are portrayed as mounts of blessing and cursing, respectively. And thinking about cursing, Mt. Sinai, itself, actually turns out to be a bad-news-mountain, because it is associated with God’s Law, which, of course, no one can keep. Some other mountains, though, bring us better news. One of them is the mountain on which Jesus was glorified in His Transfiguration (Matthew 17, Mark. 9, Luke. 9) and shown to be the Son of God, Whose mission pointed to another mountain, called Calvary, where on the cross Jesus offered up Himself as the sacrificial payment for the sins of the world. Finally, from the Mt. of Olives, Jesus ascended into the heavens (Acts 1), where He continues to pray for all those He died for. To look at the mountains all around us can be a powerful reminder of Who God is, what His grace and mercy have accomplished for His creatures.

The Father does not lie Jack Duitsman, Pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church Kernville God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent; Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? - Numbers Duitsman 23:19 Contrast this verse describing the very nature of the Father God with the testimony of Jesus regarding our adversary the devil in John 8:44: “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” On the one hand stands the Immutable, Eternal, the only wise God in whom there is no deception or un-truth. On the other hand is the devil, the antithesis of truth, the deceiver, the one from whom truth never emanates. Quite a stark disparity, especially when the conflicted outworking of these two approaches takes place in the human soul. While the Father of Love reaches into the human experience with truth that sets free, the adversary is no less busy reaching into the same human experience
with lies that bind and destroy all that the Father would work for good. At times of severe human misery and cruel bondage, these contrasts may be seen in undeniable distinction, but far too often the wide gulf between truth and lie is reduced to shades of gray and subtle nuance. Or so our lying foe would have us believe. Our lives are to be lived in the starkness of this differentiation between truth and lies. Failure to do so will not affect the Father’s heart of love for us in any way, but wherever a lie is chosen as the path of least resistance rather than the truth which calls our lives to a higher plane of obedience, there will be corresponding results that will be less than the Father’s best plans for us. Which also means, that when the opposite is embraced (i.e. choosing to live in the truth as opposed to subservience to the lie) we can expect the One who sits on the throne whose foundation is “righteousness and truth,” will Himself bring all the blessings of His Word to bear on our lives. Wow! Numbers 23:19 quoted above is an invitation to live within the scope of freedom offered by the Father’s heart of love - and embracing His truth is the starting point of the journey of faith, the continuous path we are to obediently follow, and the end line for which we are striving. We can expect the lie to shadow our way until the end, but may also be assured that Jesus who sets us free to live in the truth of His Word has conquered the lie, and continues to conquer the lie in us.

Antler, Fin & Feather Report
A stringer of information Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier Columnist There are a couple of things I need to tell you: one is if you should catch a long, slender fish with a mouth and head resembling a large-mouth bass, don’t panic. Mencarini It’s likely a Sacramento pike or what we have in the past called a “squaw fish.” At one time during our history, the indigenous people of our Valley used it as a food source along with the native trout from the Kern River. Unfortunately, it is no longer on our favorite to eat list, although they can be fun to catch. It also has a bad reputation as the eater of spawn and just spawned frye. Second, due to the demand for minnows for the great crappie bite that is currently going on in the lake, some folks are shopping for fresh water imitations at any place selling aquarium fish. This is not a good idea and might even be illegal. This falls into the same category as using gold fish and bullfrogs for bait. The worst case scenario is if someone introduces an invasive species into our lake. Crappie jigs used with a bobber work very well. Once you learn to fish this type of rig you’ll
be hooked. Speaking of the crappie bite, it has everybody talking. It seems just about everyone who is fishing for them is catching them and most are fishing from the bank. Two-pounders and even some bigger are not uncommon. Here are some tips: look for rock piles near the shore tree and stick-ups that are close enough to reach by casting, and look for groups of fisherman gathered in a particular spot. Remember your fishing etiquette. Again this past week we were hit with heavy winds. It is spring and winds are normal but some of these winds were almost dangerous. Those braving the heavy blows were rewarded with some real nice bass. The bassers that I talked to, caught and released fish up to eight pounds. Cranks and spinners work well. Let me take a few minutes of your time just as a reminder, the Derby is Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Let’s be on our best behavior. We are the lake’s representatives. Be a good example and show good sportsmanship. Keep your area clean of trash. Keep pets on a leash, lower your stereo and drink responsibly. Most of all have a great time and good luck to all. Mike Mencarini lives in Wofford Heights and is an avid fisherman. For questions or comments you can reach him through the Kern River Courier office@kernrivercourier. com.

‘Silver Linings’ shines By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “Silver Linings Playbook” (R) — Pat (Bradley Cooper) is a man with some complicated issues. He gets worked up over little things, he’s recently been released from a mental institution, he lives with his parents (Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver) and he believes he will reunite with his estranged wife any day now. While trying to figure out life, he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a similarly neurotic young woman. Thus begins an unconventional and well-crafted love story. Really. It’s dramatic and funny and romantic and not too trite in any way. We all know the two attractive basketcases will fall in love, but this movie handles it so well that you will actually care. Cooper’s performance shows he can do more than “The Hangover.” Lawrence won an Oscar for her performance, and De Niro owns his supporting role. “The Guilt Trip” (PG-13) — This road trip comedy doesn’t smash expectations, but doesn’t let down, either. Andy (Seth Rogen) is a young, single guy about to promote his new invention, an eco-friendly cleaning product. Out of sheepish guilt, he invites his widowed mother, Joyce (Barbra Streisand), to join him -- in the hope that he can help her reconnect with an old
Jennifer Lawrence in “Silver Linings Playbok”
flame, or just make her happy for a bit. The comedy is more for the Streisand crowd than Rogen fans. Many of their exchanges are improvised, and this pays off in on-screen chemistry. You can really see these two as mother and son -- in a goofy, Hollywood kinda way. The movie is short, mildly charming and offers some easy chuckles along the way. “Broken City” (R) — In a city in disrepair, a lone ex-cop (Mark Wahlberg) begins to untangle a web of intrigue and corruption that goes all the way up to the mayor (Russell Crowe). Normally, I give noir films a pass for convoluted plots and silly twists of fate that attack loose ends. “Broken City” gets no mercy. It’s boring. Even Wahlberg looks bored. The loose ends are just forgotten, and in the final act, it is revealed that many different characters were secret best friends the whole time. That’s just cheating. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

The program includes limited physical exercise, fellowship, community involvement, arts and crafts, music, reminiscing, guest entertainers, support services and meals. ARIES (Mar. 21 to April 19) Don’t waste your time and energy fretting over remarks you consider unnecessary or unkind. Best advice: ignore them, and just keep doing your usual good job. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Getting that new perspective on a workplace situation could lead to a solution everyone will accept. Meanwhile, make time to keep up with your creative pursuits. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Those changes you planned to implement in early summer might need to be reassessed. But don’t make any moves until you’ve discussed this with someone you trust. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspects favor harmony, making this a good time to work out problems in relationships -- whether personal or professional, big or small. An old friend comes back. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) While you’re still riding that high-powered beam, you might begin to lose focus by week’s end. Could be you’ll need to do a little cat-napping to restore your spent energies. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) An unexpected development creates a lot of excitement. Where it
takes you is your decision. Check out the possibilities, then decide if you want to go with it or not. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Although your supporters help you squash an unfair claim against you, don’t let this go unchallenged. You need to learn more about the motives of those behind it. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) There are still some tasks to clear up by midweek. Then you can welcome the new month on a high note. A friend brings surprising but very welcome news. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) You might want to change your plans before they’re set in cement. Consider advice from colleagues. But remember that, ultimately, it’s your choice. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) A difficult situation is working itself out. Lingering problems should be resolved by week’s end, allowing you to enjoy a calmer, less stressful period. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Be careful not to move so quickly that you miss possible warning signs that could upset your plans. Slow down. Your supporters will continue to stand by you. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Your generosity in sharing your time and wisdom with others leads to an intriguing development that could have you considering some interesting choices. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle
you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on the notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgages, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 661-945-5525 using the file number 12-2217. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet web site.
