Filmmaker to visit Kernville Laura Dobbins Special to the Courier
It was behind the lens where she felt most comfortable. From the moment she shot her first scene, there was no turning back. Linda Lou Crosby has had an illustrious career in storytelling, including an Emmy nomination in the 1980s for a documentary she produced on women in sports for PBS. Nationwide her work as a video producer for the Navy and Department of Defense has also been highly recognized. Kernville residents are in for a treat on Friday, April 15 starting at 6:30 p.m., when Crosby will be at Ewings on the Kern, offering a behind-the-scenes look at her latest project, “The Gypsy Cowman … a Vanishing Breed.” The documentary chronicles the life of a gypsy cowman – one who herds cattle on land he never owns. Owen Badgett’s life reads like an old Western. He often was at the mercy of Mother Nature, especially during the harsh winters of Eastern Montana, and seldom did he live with modern conveniences like running water, electricity or heat. “‘The Gypsy Cowman” is a tribute to those who helped establish the West as

Greenhorn Grill reopens after flood Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier
The Greenhorn Grill in Alta Sierra has reopened three months after a stormy closure in December. Restaurant owner Mike Hill announced the re-opening this past week, saying that after building repairs and new staff training they are once again open for business. A December storm forced the popular restaurant to close between Christmas and New Year’s when a 25-foot treetop fell through the kitchen area roof. The 18inch diameter cedar tree severed a 1-1/2 inch fire sprinkler line, flooding the restaurant with thousands of gallons of water. The restaurant at 10720 Pine St. Alta Sierra is now open for lunch and dinner Friday and Saturday noon to 9 pm, and Sunday noon to 7 p.m. Travel west on Highway 155 (Evans Road) from Wofford Heights to Alta Sierra and follow the signs. For reservations call (760) 376-8900.
Japanese earthquake story continues Mike Devich Kern River Courier
The Courier has presented two parts of a very important memoir from a doctor who was in northern Japan during the huge earthquake and resulting tsunami on March 11. Her recollections were recorded on her blog, and the Courier received special permission from the author to use her story. Last week we wrapped up her recollection of the day of the big 9.0 quake and how she coped through it. This week we learn about what happened the day after, March 12. Aftershocks pummeled the region for many days after the big quake. Over 700 significant
quakes have been recorded since March 11. In this third chapter, Ivo (an Indonesian medical researcher living in Japan) records her thoughts as she wakes up to a new morning in a country dealing with disaster. “The power was still out, there was no running water, and I still couldn’t contact Ria. Aftershocks kept coming, we still stopped whatever we were doing every time it happened, but we stopped counting how many aftershocks we had after the big quake. While making our breakfast, someone knocked on my door, and it was Ria! I almost cried with relief seeing her, and knowing that she and

If you’re visiting the Kern River Valley, you’re wondering what’s to see and do. Well, here is a primer on that very subject. If you love the great outdoors and a slower place where you can relax, enjoy a small-town atmosphere and just breathe easy, this is the place for you. But if you’re looking for excitement, and if you start exploring, you will find a number of the great things we have to offer. If you haven’t noticed yet, the valley is a mecca for water lovers. Fishing is a given. Where can you get a fishing license? At just about every convenience store, marina and even some of the supermarkets. Boating licenses? Same thing. River
rafting? Best to go with a professional service, in season. There are many in the valley. Want a destination to go to? Here are some great ones – Kern Valley Museum in Kernville, Silver City Ghost Town in Bodfish, nice parks such as Riverside and Circle Park in Kernville, Wofford Heights Park and Lake Isabella Park, Reel Cinema in Wofford Heights, the delightful Old Onyx Store (built in 1861), the Nuui Cunni Indian Cultural Center at French Gulch, and the big sequoias at the Trail of 100 Giants (summer only). Or just take your camera and photograph the old buildings or the fabulous scenery. If you’re looking for a realistic nature park in a controlled environment, what we have is better – real nature. It doesn’t get any realer than that.

Previews of new DVDs by DNA Smith New DVDs reviewed in this column will be available in stores the week of April 18. PICKS OF THE WEEK "The King's Speech" (R) -Colin Firth stars as Britain's King George VI, who, following the death of his father (Michael Gambon) and the abdication of his brother Edward (Guy Pearce), is in a spot of bother. It appears our reluctant monarch has a bit of a stammering problem, old bean, and must overcome it. Enter Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), an Australian selftaught speech Colin Firth therapist, whose methods are, shall we say, unorthodox. Despite divisions of class, the two form a lifelong bond, and the King overcomes his impediment in the nick of time to give the most important speech of his life on the eve of World War II. I expected "The King's Speech" to be another slowpaced costume drama, but was pleasantly surprised that it moved at a quick pace. The performances by the entire cast were brilliant, and there were more than a fair share of humorous moments. Highly recommended. Pip-pip and all that.

Grandmaster" (R) -- Donnie Yen stars once again as Ip Man, the kung-fu legend who developed the Wing Chun style of martial arts and was mentor to Bruce Lee. This sequel continues the story of the grandmaster as he moves to Hong Kong to open a kung-fu school, but faces opposition from Master Hung (Sammo Hung), the leader of a group of corrupt masters, leading to a fierce battle between Ip and a Western-style fighter named Twister. Although not as awesome as the first film, "Ip Man 2" is still a great martial-arts movie, especially if you love oldschool, downand-dirty fighting styles.

Courier Fishing Report
Tread carefully while fishing Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier columnist
I need to make a correction on last week’s column. I stated that the winners of the Anglers Choice Bass Club tourney were brothers; in fact they are a father and son team. Mike Mencarini In case you haven’t been near the river lately, it’s close to raging and it’s filling the lake quickly. There should be lots of water for the Derby, which is coming up April 1618. The fish for the Derby are looking great and should provide lots of excitement. The upper and lower Kern are on the regular stocking schedule, according to Danny at the hatchery. Remember that when the water is at a higher flow, fish closer to the bank in the slower water. The trout can’t fight the current so they find easier spots to hang out while looking for that next meal. I noticed that the south side of the lake camping areas are filling fast with only 11 days to Derby time. I also noticed that
this year, Red’s Marina is now a fee area. So be prepared to pay to camp or fish. Here is a tip -- if you are disabled you can go to Forest Service office and apply for an Access Pass, which could entitle the card holder to some discounts. The card is free, but you must show proof of a disability (paperwork). The south side of the lake water temperature is now at 60 degrees, which means the crappie bite at Joughin’s Cove at the habitat cages is in full swing. Get there early; the bank gets full of anglers real quick. My neighbors and friends who bass fish tell me the bass action has improved with some nice fish being caught and released. Please keep this thought in the forefront of your mind. Rushing water carries a lot of momentum. It only takes a split second to sweep you or a loved one away. Always put safety first! Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and a volunteer at the Kern River Fish Hatchery. For questions or comments you can reach him through the Kern River Courier, office@kernrivercourier.com.

Special Use Permit applied for by mountain bike group Mike Devich Kern River Courier
The Kern River Ranger District of the Sequoia National Forest is asking for public comment on a proposal to issue a special use permit for a new outfitter guide, Hermosa Tours. They have submitted an application for trail mountain biking and plan to use existing trails in non-wilderness areas within the SNF and the Giant Sequoia Monument. Hermosa tours would receive a one-year temporary permit, which would include an operating plan outlining scheduled trips and will be designed to promote client safety, resource protection and compliance with laws and regulations.
The proposed rides would take place on the Unal Trail, the Kern Canyon Trail, the Cannell Trail, the Tobias Trail, the Remington Ridge Trail and the Badger Gap Trail. They would take place from mid-August to mid-October. A scoping letter was sent out to the media and interested parties on April 1, asking for comments by April 20 if anyone knows of any unusual situations or extraordinary circumstances that may lead this proposed action to cause significant environmental effects. Letters may be sent to Artie Colson at P.O. Box 3810, Lake Isabella CA 93240 or emailed to acolson@fs.fed.us. Refer to “Hermosa Tours SUP Proposal” at the beginning of your response.

an integral part of America's cultural heritage and to those who carry on those values today," Crosby said. Crosby first met Badgett on a wild horse roundup for the China Lake Naval Air Base near Ridgecrest when Badgett was working for Bureau of Land Management in and around Kern County. The two struck up a friendship and remained in contact after Badgett quit his job with BLM and moved back to his beloved Eastern Montana. In 1999, Crosby and her husband Hart Broesel, a professional photographer, were invited to visit Badgett – he wanted them to see the Triple N Ranch where he worked at the time. That meeting resulted in what would become a decade-long project for Crosby, who decided to film a documentary on Badgett’s life. It also led to the decision for Crosby and her husband to move to Montana. “The Gypsy Cowman … a Vanishing Breed” debuted at the Lone Pine (Calif.) Film Festival in 2009. The documentary is now playing at selected locations around the country and a promo of the film has already received over 1,500 hits on YouTube. Tickets are $25 each or $40 per couple, and include a $7.95 appetizer, a copy of the movie (only one for couples) and a presentation by the filmmaker. Health Insurance Matters
Turning 65, Part 3 Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist
Two weeks ago I discussed the process of applying to Social Security to enroll in Medicare. Last week, I discussed several plan types which may be attractive to some people due to the no monthly premium cost. They just make co-pays Harry Thal when using services, up to $850 to walk into the hospital. As promised, I will now tell you what I bought. It is called a Medicare Supplement. The policy is designed to fit hand in hand with Medicare. As I mentioned last week, Medicare has various deductibles and co-pays. Doctors can even charge more than Medicare allows (excess charges) if they choose. The Plan F supplement, offered by most major insurance companies, fills all these gaps. Medicare supplements are often referred to as "Medi-Gap" policies. The Medicare supplement policy has the advantage of allowing you to pick and choose your own doctors and specialists. Your primary care doctor can refer you to any physician who accepts Medicare. Living in the Kern River Valley, many people on HMO plans have discovered while they would like to recuperate at our local hospital, their insurance plan insists on their being in Bakersfield. Not so
with the supplement. You are in control. The best treatment for say, brain cancer may be in Los Angeles, with the Medicare Supplement you get to pick where you go for treatment. Another reason I like the supplement is that my healthcare isn't being rationed. There is no requirement to call an insurance company for permission before treatment. If my doctor says I need it, and I believe him/her, then on with the show. Having +been in the health insurance business specializing in Medicare, I have seen it all. I rarely get any claims issues with the supplement clients, while those with HMO or even (to a lesser degree) with the PPO plans are calling with claims complaints. Since the claims are processed by Medicare instead of an insurance company, more claims are paid quicker. Next week, I will talk about the last element of needed coverage, the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker. He is President of the Kern Association of Health Underwriters and on the National Association of Health Underwriters Medicare Advisory Board. QUAKE continued from page 1 Zach was OK. Ria’s husband, Alan was still in the UK for business trip. It must have been hard for them to go through it without Alan and with Zachary’s broken arm (he got an accident while skating 2 weeks before the earthquake), but they were OK, and that’s all that matters. “Rylan came by bike, Laura, Kimberly and Yohei came, and we shared informations about our other friends’ conditions and whereabouts. It felt great to have friends around us, and knowing that we didn’t have to go through this alone. The conditions of the people on the coastal area made my hands shake, remembering how it happened, not so long ago, in Indonesia. How extremely lucky I am, to be in both countries when both disaster happened but still I survived uninjured. “The afternoon came, and we lost the internet connection. I felt a bit isolated for not being able to talk to my loved ones, so I decided to distract myself by being busy. I checked my emergency backpack, and went to the first floor to get water. I filled the toilet tank with buckets of water so I could flush, and I never thought I would love the sound of the toilet flushing. I filled all the containers I had with water, and going back and forth from 5th to 1st floor made me feel better. I met my students who live in the same apartment building, and I was glad when I heard everybody was OK. I prepared the food and forced myself to eat even though I was not hungry at all. I walked around my apartment to check if
everything was secured and put down all the breakables, to prevent them from falling if another big aftershock came. I made sure the exit was cleared in case we had to run out, and make sure that the thick coats, shoes, and emergency backpack could be easily grabbed on the way out. “The evening came, and it started to get dark. We decided to prepare dinner, and while we were in the kitchen at around 7 p.m., the refrigerator started to hum! The power was back! We screamed with joy and I called my loved ones right away and oh how happy I was to hear their voices! “Another call came through and it was my friend Hiroko. She cried when I said hello, telling me mine was the first voice she heard aside from hers and her husband’s since the black Friday happened. “I went to bed that night with the heater on. I had not heard anything about the Fukushima nuclear reactor plant incident, but I knew the disaster was far from over with thousands of people were still missing and another thousands still at shelters with no power, food nor water. “It was the D+1, I survived another day, but with all the uncertainties hanging in the air.” (Ed.– This story should serve to remind everyone that they should have emergency supplies available in the event of disaster.)

Bladder infections bane of women Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Courier Syndicated Columnist
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please explain urinary tract infections. Why do they recur? My doctor prescribes antibiotics, but shortly after I've completed taking them, I have another infection. What do you suggest as treatment? A pharmacist told me that I needed one or two days in the hospital to flush out my kidneys. -- S.A. ANSWER: Urinary tract infections fall into one of two types. Upper tract infections indicate that the kidneys are involved. These are serious and less-common infections. Lower urinary tract infections are bladder infections, and they are very common. That's the kind of infection I believe you have. Women are prone to develop bladder infections for a number of reasons. One, the tube (urethra) that empties their bladder is much shorter than in males, so bacteria can gain access to the bladder more easily. Secondly, the opening of the female urethra is in a place with a large population of bacteria. And thirdly, sexual relations massage bacteria into the female urethra and bladder. A bladder infection -- cystitis -provokes frequent trips to the bathroom, an urgent need to quickly empty the bladder or suffer an accident, and pain, usually described as burning, during urination. Women with repeated bladder infections need to be evaluated to see if the infection is a relapse (an
infection with the same bacterium) or a new infection (infection with a different bacterium). The approach to treatment hinges on that information. If a woman has another infection with the same bacterium, the doctor can put her on the same antibiotic for a longer period of time and can continue to treat long after symptoms have gone. The continued treatment is with a reduced antibiotic dose. Another way to prevent a recurrence is to give the woman a prescription for an antibiotic that she takes after intercourse. Home remedies can be helpful. Drinking 8 ounces of cranberry juice daily benefits prevention of the most common cause of these infections. The kidney flush suggestion is not a good one. The booklet on urinary tract infections delves deeper into these common maladies. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1204W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc. (c) 2011 North America Synd., Inc. Wasn’t Jeremiah a bullfrog? Clarence Semonious, pastor Prince of Peace Lutheran Fellowship, Kernville
Jeremiah was more than a bullfrog. He was a prophet, but what’s up with the bullfrog? According to an interview quote attributed to Chuck Negron, of the musical group, Three Dog Night was named from an Australian aborigine expression about how to survive the coldest of nights by Semonious cuddling with their canines. Negron explained that the song was to spotlight the lyrics. The first line originally read, “Jeremiah was a prophet,” but “no one liked that.” Evidently they liked Jeremiah better as a bullfrog because was number 1 for 6 weeks in 1971. I like Jeremiah as a prophet partially because among the things he wrote, was a message, as stated in the song, “Joy to the world All the boys and girls now Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea Joy to you and me.” Check this out, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11. Hope did
include the boys and girls, “There is hope for your future, declares the LORD, and your children shall come back to their own country.” Jeremiah 31:17. By extension, joy to the fishes can be understood from, “Praise the LORD from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfilling his word!” Psalm 148:7-8. Please do not misunderstand, I am not saying what the band did or did not mean by the lyrics. But God uses whom he will for His purposes. Again, it is Jeremiah who makes the point. “Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts: Because you have not obeyed my words, behold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, declares the LORD, and for Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations.” Jeremiah 25:9. Nebuchadnezzar was God’s servant? Whatever Three Dog Night did or did not do, they caused you to understand Jeremiah, give praise to the lord!

Never doubt Word of God Jack Duitsman, pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville
Then she came and threw herself at His feet and entreated Him. "O Sir, help me," she said. Matthew 15:25 There is a serious misnomer that assails believers in Jesus that holds to the idea of spiritual maturity equaling Duitsman a less desperate need for the grace of God. This notion is much more than dangerous, for it is spawned in the depths of human pride, and if followed to its sinister end will lead the believer to faithless agnosticism - a denial of the very Savior it claims is working such remarkable spiritual maturity. While such tendency is not difficult to combat, it is most insidious in its capacity to hide its ugly face behind deep spiritual devotion and remain difficult to detect. If your first response to these opening words is this could never happen to you, I urge you to read on with a heart open to the Holy Spirit's gracious correction. Or if your heart is immediately pricked with a sense that you are being found out, I encourage you to read on with a desire to stay desperately dependent on the grace of
God. The above verse lies smack in the middle of an eight verse narrative that begins with a dialogue between Jesus and a woman seeking a miracle for her daughter, and ends with the miracle being granted by the Lord. I wonder at times if all too easily we lose sight of our ongoing need for the touch of God's amazing grace on our lives. The above narrative becomes a textbook of humility as we, like this woman, are invited to continually come to grips with our own desperate need, and the Father's deep desire to strongly come to the aid of the needy (i.e. humble). Except it is worked by the loving heart of God, let us be convinced that nothing good resides in us . . . nothing! And with this honest assessment, let us forever come desperately to the Father with our cries for His grace filled work in our hearts and lives. "God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble," is His heart on the matter, and as this woman found grace more than sufficient for her circumstance, so too you and I will find the gracious work of God well able to meet all of our points of desperate need. "Lord help me" was her cry of desperation, and may it often well up in our hearts as we echo this same sentiment.

It’s an equestrian’s dream Matt Freeman Kern River Courier Columnist
Lately, I have been working with a few clients that have been interested in horse property here in the valley. I have sold a lot of homes and pieces of land over the years that are horse property, but lately I have come to realize something that most non horseloving guys Matt Freeman don't. This valley is a horse lover's dream! There is so much available horse property around this area, so much more than many other areas of the state. As a matter of fact, I did some research and we are one of only several areas in California This valley is that has the dream! combination of a large body of water, ample horse land for sale, and ample places to take those horses. We have Forest Service and BLM land all around us, and trails are everywhere. Weldon, Kernville, Onyx, Wofford Heights up Old State Road, Alta Sierra, many places to take the horses and go riding. Horse property itself is avail-
able in Bodfish, Squirrel Valley, Weldon, Onyx, and parts of Kernville and Wofford Heights. Basically, anything that is zoned RS, for "Residential Suburban," is horse property. The building code says you can have one horse per 1/4 acre on land zoned RS. You can also have cows, chickens, pigs, and pretty much any farm animal in most areas zoned RS. There is a lot of land in this area that has that zoning. Most commonly land that is zoned RS is also zoned E for "Estate." Plus, there is a lot of A zoning out on the south side of the lake. A is "Agriculture". You can have pretty much anything on ag land. Another factor with horse property is the wide open spaces it typically offers. It is nice to have neighbors, but to not have them so close. So, personally I am a dog, cat a horse lover’s and fish kinda guy, --Matt Freeman horses are not for me. But if you are a horse lover, think of the Kern River Valley because this place is a horse lover's dream! Matt Freeman is a Realtor with Freeman’s Lakeside Realty (760) 379-5915 or cell 223-0880. His column is not intended to replace legal advice.

Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Whether a waiting period is taking longer than expected, or just seems that way, you would do well to create a center of calm within yourself, and not do anything rash. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Practical matters dominate the week, but cultural activities also are favored, especially those that can be shared with someone special. Important news is forthcoming. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You need to know more about a possible career move in order to see if it offers a real opportunity or just a change. The decision must be yours. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The arrival of hoped-for good news about a loved one dominates most of the week and provides a great excuse to plan a special event to celebrate. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Leos and Leonas rushing to finalize their plans might want to think about slowing down the pace, or risk overlooking an important consideration that could become a sore point down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The week's challenges call for logical approaches. But sentiment also has its place. Sharing memories with a special someone, for example, strengthens the bond between you.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A brandnew approach to a problem could have a good chance of succeeding if it's based on a solid foundation of fact. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A favorable report should give your optimism an important boost as you confront another phase of a challenge. Don't be timid about accepting advice. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might want to target another goal if your current aim is continually being deflected. But stay with it until you find that first sign of an opening. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although offers of advice might not always please the usually sure-footed Goat, good counsel is always worth considering, especially from those whose experience can be invaluable. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Don't rush to make up for lost time. Your productivity can be measured not only by what you do, but how you do it. Move carefully until the job is done. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Emerging facts about someone you know might cause you to rethink your relationship. But remember to make judgments in context of a full situation. Since its establishment in 1999, the Foundation has awarded more than $7 million to improve Kern County's quality of life.
Letter to the Courier Dear Kern River Courier, Time has passed since the bike park was taken from the California Recreation Foundation (DBA KV Bike Park) and since Chuck, Chris and I were ousted from the Kernville Chamber of Commerce. In that time I have seen numerous writings regarding the matter but I have yet to respond to any of it. I think now would be a good time to speak. I was the elected President of the Kernville Chamber of Commerce and a volunteer for the KV Bike Park. I attended every Chamber meeting, but one, for the Chamber of Commerce in the two years that I served. I also attended every KV Bike Park board Foundation meeting as well as and almost every Bike Park advisory board meeting, of the volunteers. I attended every race but one and nearly every practice. I oversaw the accounting books for both the Chamber of Commerce and for the Foundation (bike park). I was there from the very first thought of the bike park to the very end. I watched community and outsiders donate, volunteer and pray for this park to happen. So I think that makes me a real "know it all". There is now a miscommunication (among the multitude of lies) going around that needs clarification. A bike park really has nothing to do with and can exist without league racing, associations, and membership fees. For instance, a bike park does not have to have BMX syndicated races. But, the reason to have an organization, memberships and races is so there is a way to raise money to keep a bike park operating. The CRF Foundation donated and signed up as many as 60 National Bicycle League memberships from its inception. It also donated bikes, helmets, clothing, and bus rides with its income from those races and it paid for many children to race each week (on average 20 to 40 racers). Who and what made all of this possible is who Chris Brayman originally gave credit to from the very beginning and that is GOD. Yes, there wascommunity support, yes there were outsiders that believed in the dream. But more than anything else there was GOD, and that is the reason it was working. Those folks who have written so many things and have slandered Chris Brayman and blamed him for the bike park’s failure and theft of monies (to name two things I have read) really should apologize to him. The only mistake Chris made was to meet me and let me talk him into building his dream with the Kernville Chamber of Commerce. My overall point is that people with huge egos ruin things when they get involved. I wish for all of our sake they would have left well enough alone. Jill Sloan-Thurman Kernville

Her name was Nellie Cashman. She was less than five feet tall. She had delicate feminine features and lustrous dark eyes. But her beauty didn’t stop her from joining a California Joe mostly male fraternity – Gold Rush prospectors. After owning a short order restaurant in Virginia City, Nevada, in 1874 she joined in a daring adventure to the Cassiar district of upper British Columbia. The strike proved to be a rich one and Nellie capitalized on it by prospecting and running a boardinghouse for miners. But she didn’t find any gold. In 1880 Nellie succumbed to the allure of a silver strike at Arizona’s rip-roaring new boomtown, Tombstone. Instead of prospecting this time, she operated the Russ House Hotel where she was said to serve the best meals in town. Nellie soon became as much a landmark in Tombstone as the Bird Cage Theater and the O.K. Corral. She was forever taking up collections and sponsoring benefits for men in trouble like the unlucky prospector who fell down a mine shaft and broke both legs. For him Nellie raised $500, with much of it coming from friends she had made
from among the town’s large disreputable element. Nellie’s hotel in Tombstone was raking in the cash. But within three years she decided to put it up for sale when the prospecting bug bit her once again. It was said that a dying Mexican stumbled into Tombstone one day and collapsed at the entrance to the hotel. The “Angel Of Tombstone” had him carried inside and just before he expired the stranger muttered to her, “Mulege, go to Mulege.” His pockets were found to be stuffed with gold nuggets. Nellie Cashman, clad in overalls and a flannel shirt and with a miner’s pick over her shoulder, left Tombstone in 1883 with 20 other prospectors bound for Mulege, an inland town on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Turned out there was a blistering desert to cross and Nellie set off alone. At the end of her trek she found that the prospectors at Mulege were dying of thirst. Arriving at an isolated Catholic mission, she quickly organized a rescue party of Mexicans with burros carrying goatskins filled with water. They reached the unlucky prospectors just in time and they survived. She never did strike it rich prospecting, but what she found was worth more than gold. Things I Have Noticed...
Chaperoning those ladybugs Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist
Yesterday I was browsing through a magazine called Country Living. On page 15 I noticed an article called “For The Love of Ladybugs.” It was all about those cute tiny polka dotted critters we see flitting around our yards. It pointed out that Middleworth these little rascals do the work of pesticides without damaging the planet. They prey on aphids and all kinds of other scaled insects. My mind immediately snapped into action and I started to wonder how I could find and capture enough of those festive beetles to work in my yard while they also save Mother Earth. As I read further, it said that for $14.95 they would ship me 900 adult ladybugs, which I could turn loose to do their thing. I noticed that they said “adult” ladybugs. That made me wonder – how do they know that they are adult and not teenaged bugs? Would teenagers work as hard or would they spend time texting other teenybopper bugs? And what if the shipment contained both male and female bugs; would they all be called ladybugs? (I have never heard of guybugs, but maybe I'm onto
something here!) Other questions developed. What would stop those 900 rascals from leaving my yard and working in my neighbor’s garden? Could I charge my neighbor rent, and how could I prove that those were my ladybugs? Would I have to mark them? Furthermore, would 900 ladybugs be enough, or was that too many? Could I expect to see an increase in the population as those 900 critters start messing around after the sun goes down? What would I do with the bugs each night? Do I have to provide lodging and have check-in times? Will my neighbors be upset if they see hordes of ladybugs roaming in the gloaming? And how do I know if all those bugs are mine? Is there a mating call that would attract other ladybugs? How long do they live, and how do I know when they're through working? Suppose I'm dissatisfied with their efforts? Can I send them back, and if so, how do I capture them for the return trip? As you can see there are lots of questions that need answers before I commit my hard earned $14.95 for 900 winged beetles. Even if they are cute with their little polka dot dusters and gossamer wings!
