Fire update

Lion Fire now at 20,166 acres U.S. Forest Service Special to the Courier

The Lion Wildland Fire, burning in Sequoia National Forest and Sequoia National Park has reached 20,166 acres since being ignited by lightning on July 8th. Fire officials expect it to grow approximately 150 acres over the next several days, until it reaches the perimeter line to the south along Alpine Creek. There are approximately 250 acres that are still burning throughout the fire and producing smoke. The Lion Fire is 75% contained by rocky ridges and areas with little or no fuel, previous wildland fires, rivers, creeks, existing trails, or fire lines cut through surface fuels. There is no estimate for when the fire will be fully contained within this pre-determined perimeter. Several spot fires have, once again, proven the ecological benefit and improved firefighter safety of managing wildfire in the Golden Trout Wilderness. Spot fires ignited in areas previously burned went out on their own, with little effort from firefighters. Spot fires ignited in other places, where fire hasn't burned for over 90 years, took great efforts from firefighters and the use of helicopters to douse the flames before they were able spread. "A direct result of the Lion and other managed wildfires in the Golden Trout Wilderness is that future fires should be smaller, and much less destructive," stated Western Divide District Ranger Priscilla Summers. Area closures remain in effect in Sequoia National Forest and Sequoia National Park. Visit http://inciweb.org/incident2400/ for maps of the closures. Anyone planning to travel into the Forest's Wilderness is asked to contact the Western Divide Ranger District at 559-539-2607 Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For those planning wilderness travels in the southern area of Sequoia National Park, please call 559565-3766.

Home sweet campground Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier Publisher Camping… how sweet it is. A sweet spot for the wife and I is a campground in the local mountains called Lower Peppermint. For $17 a night in a semiprimitive site one gets a parking spot, picnic table, fire ring, vault toilet, drinking water and someone keeps Batelaan the creek stocked and running. To get a campsite, you must have foresight: you get there early, have reservations or you are out-of-a-site. The daytime is quiet time. Everyone that is not sleeping off the night before has gone to see the big trees, gone to the natural water slides, is playing in the creek or taking a nap (including our dog). The nighttime activities however include seeing who can build the biggest campfire, drink the most or make the most noise using a chain saw, swearing, and playing their music loudly. The amenities of camping have changed. You can literally bring everything with you, including the kitchen sink. If you haven't "heard it" you can generate your own electric power (and the best time to do this of course, is at night.

Our campground neighbors from the Kern Valley are the cleanest in the camp. They brought with them a solar shower. This looks very good after two days of camping. Camping has become a sign of the classes from the ground up, those that sleep on the ground, the ones who sleep in a tent, a tent on wheels (tent trailer), to camp trailer. The 5th wheel however is just that, a fifth wheel that doesn't fit any of the traditional trailer formats. Then there is the recreational vehicle, or RV for short. This class of so-called campers had to come up with its own class system, class A, B, and C. These folks chose not to even include those of us who might be class D, E, and F. I fall into the 13 foot, 70's classic trailer mode, a fixer-upper I found for $400 at a yard sale. I noticed that many people just drive round and round the campground during the day. Driving through the campground must be just like going to the zoo. You get to look at all the wild animal enclosures, but just like the zoo, most all the animals human or otherwise only come out at night. They view those of us who are in our campsites and think by our waving that we are a friendly bunch, but we are just swatting at the bugs. Michael Batelaan is publisher of the Kern River Courier. Heart goes out to newest member of the Kernville Chamber Transcend Automotive in Bodfish, a new garage, under the ownership of Jade and Ruth Ann Smith, has opened and joined the chamber. Lanny did the remodeling on the old Manny's discount store and was helping with the sign on the roof when he suffered a heart attack. He called down to Jade who immediately got on the ladder and phone to 911 while calling down to his wife Ruthann, who is an expert in CPR. She quickly applied her knowledge on Lanny's chest and he was then transported to Kern Valley Hospital, where they quickly responded to his condition and sent him to Bakersfield San Joaquin Hospital where a cardiologist was waiting for him to perform an angiogram. They discovered a blockage and inserted a stent. We want to thank these folks Jade and Ruthann, and all the staff at Kern Valley Hospital, San Joaquin Hospital, Engines 71 (South Lake) and 72 (Lake Isabella), Tony Talbot and the Kern Valley Search and Rescue, Jeremy Humphries and Evan Hamilton Lanny's crew and Care Ambulance for saving Lanny's life!!! Article on HR1581 rubs the wrong way In a recent issue of the Kern River Courier (7/29/11) Mike Devich wrote an article entitled, "Locals Testify in Washington, DC". In the article the author attempted to present the case for Representative Kevin McCarthy's hearing on HR 1581, The Wilderness and Roadless Area Release Act of 2011. While the article itself is poorly written, and I hope, Mr. McCarthy was seriously misquoted due to the poor sentence structures presented, that is only the beginning of the problem. The article concludes that HR 1581 is good because if passed we will have " the locals in control." There-in lies the rub. That is the "snake oil" being sold by Mr. McCarthy in HR 1581. This ruse has been tried every decade over the past sixty years-allow federal lands to be given back to the states, given to local governments, placed under "local control." And the result will in every such case be chaos. No other entity has the resources to manage wilderness, national forest, national parks, or BLM land except the federal government. Once divested from federal control, rampant road building, over grazing, oil and gas drilling, strip

Remember to keep an open mind, and be prepared to make changes as new opportunities arise. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Congratulations. That on-the-job situation is working out as you'd hoped. Now's a good time to relax and to enjoy the company of family and close friends. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might feel as if you're caught in an emotional tugof-war. But don't be rushed into a decision on either side. Wait for more facts before you act. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Goat's usually high level of self-confidence is brimming over these days. This should help you deal with a situation that you've avoided for far too long. Go for it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Relationships become more intense. But be careful not to be pushed into decisions you're not comfortable with. Remember: You're the one in charge of your life. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You need to show more confidence in your ability to reach your goals. mining or clear cutting are right around the corner-often combinations thereof. Those lands HR 1581 wants to grab belong to me. They belong to you. Nobody is making any more unspoiled land, any more wilderness. At one time the whole North American continent was unspoiled wilderness; there is less than one percent left. Every concession, every compromise results in irretrievable loss. These lands are like the grizzly bear, California's proud symbol that has been extinct in this state for almost a century because nobody was paying attention. Once gone, once opened up, these lands are gone forever. In conclusion, HR 1581 is a bad law, a bad idea, and bad philosophy. This law is by people who don't know the wilderness and whose perspective is next year instead of next millennium. Let's make sure everyone understands that so Mr. McCarthy has an opportunity to rethink his position. Douglas Schanzenbach Lake Isabella Editors response: "Thanks for your letter. I'm sorry you felt I tried to present a case for HR 1581. That was not the intention. The intention was simply to report that two locals went to Washington to testify along with McCarthy on HR 1581. McCarthy's comments did come directly from his testimony. The article does not con-

clude that HR 1581 is good -- that is McCarthy's conclusion, the bill being his, of course." Bear be aware appropriate and timely article I have been feeding feral cats on my front porch the past several months, leaving the food overnight for them. About a month ago, I had a raccoon visit, and we became a little friendly. However last night the raccoon came up again, with four kits in tow. She ate, they ate, and a cat ate ... leaving a bit in the pie plate. Hubby had just gone to bed, I was knitting and watching TV... felt something looking at me... a very large, young, black bear finishing off the cat food. I yelled... "Hubby (not his name BTW) there's a bear on the front porch!!!" Hubby got up just in time to see the bear's rump as it rapidly went down the stairs from our deck, and into the front yard. No longer will there be food left for the feral cats, raccoons or bears on my front porch at night. Cats will have to be content for daylight food. Garbage, so far, not invaded, nor the compost heap. But, what a sensation... fear and awe both at the same time! Boy, I do love this Kern River Valley... moved here four years ago, and never want to leave it! Lyn Contresceri-Mercer Bodfish Canyon

Give us this day Jack Duitsman, pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with Duitsman plenty or little. Philippians 4:12 Gaining mastery on Biblical economics would certainly take more time and space than we have allotted to us here, but this space can be used as a reminder of a few truths that will aid in sharpening our focus on matters of money. It is critical to remember that the Kingdom of God is proclaimed the world over, and while our distinctly American perspective is important to the heart of the Father, so also is the situation of every one of His children throughout the world. In looking for some spiritual perspective in what is forever a changing dynamic - finances are indeed fluid - we are challenged to look for God's heart first, and our need second. If we are willing to take this approach, we will find profound comfort, as well as great encouragement from promises in the Word. Jesus' kingdom, while functioning within the framework of this world, does not find its primary outworking in this temporal world. In other words, monetary riches as defined by society in

which we live, is not the first or last word to God's people where finance is concerned. It is little wonder that Jesus' disciples were so incredulous when He declared it difficult for the "rich to enter the kingdom of heaven," for in their minds (and ours also) monetary wealth was akin to the blessing of God. While we might be able to reason our way out of this mindset, it is often quite another thing to convince our hearts otherwise. An empty wallet can weigh heavily on the heart, and a flush bank account can bring with it a sense of serenity that may be mistaken for the peace of God. In either of these fiscal positions we do well to remember that "life is more than raiment," and the timeless principles of faith are neither deterred nor enhanced by the pile of Benjamin's ($100 bills) we could stack on the kitchen table. Please don't hear these words as a diatribe against money, or an exaltation of poverty, but rather as an encouragement to live above both of these, and enjoy the blessing of God in spite of either. Hear than these four timeless responses then to life's circumstance as they now find us: Be content - The wisdom of Ecclesiastes ends with a call to "fear God and keep His commands." No mention of financial pursuits though the book is written by a fabulously wealthy man, and filled with such themes. Revisit the above verse for a sense of what contentment should look like, and add to this mix the blessing of God that comes to us in spite of our status.
