Continuing to get folks to visit the great outdoors, Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell is offering his agency's second fee waiver weekend this summer on August 14-15. Around Isabella Lake, there will be no charge for day use at Auxiliary Dam, Old Isabella Road, South Fork Recreation, or Camp 9 Day Use Area on Saturday, August 14 or Sunday, August 15. Fees will still apply for overnight use of Auxiliary Dam, Old Isabella, and South Fork Recreation. Camp 9 Day Use will remain closed to overnight usage; while the campground at Camp 9 will operate at normal price. Fees will also remain in effect for all other campgrounds in the Kern River Ranger District. Traditionally, fees are not charged on 98 percent of national forests and grasslands and over twothirds of developed recreation sites can be used for free, said the Forest Service. Many recreation opportunities such as camping, sightseeing and hiking can be enjoyed throughout the year at no cost. The Forest Service operates about 17,000 recreation sites. Of those sites, approximately 6,000

The historic Silver City Ghost Town in Bodfish was featured on the Biography Channel's series “My Ghost Story” on Aug. 7. According to owner J. Paul Corlew, the segment was in part filmed secretly during last Halloween's night tours at the Ghost Town. Corlew was interviewed for the show earlier this year at a TV studio in Los Angeles, as was former Ghost Town employee Brandi Archambault. Both recounted ghostly experiences they had at the Ghost Town. “It was an experience I will never for-

get,” said Archambault. Many local and out-of-town tour visitors were shown in the feature segment. Dozens of eerie photos submitted by visitors and staff of Silver City were shown during the program. In addition, Corlew explored the legends and history of the Kern River Valley’s colorful mining legacy. Vintage photos of the valley provided by the Kern River Valley Historical Society were shown during the segment. “The show gives the Kern Valley some much-needed and rare national exposure” said Corlew. “We have had many inquiries as a result of the segment already,” he said.

Miss the show? You can watch encore presentations again on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 4 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 15 at 8 p.m. and midnight. The “My Ghost Story” segment will also be posted in the near future online at http://www.biography.com/video.do?na me=myghoststory. Silver City Ghost Town is no. 6 on the list of “This Old House Online's” 15 most haunted sites in the United States. The Apalatea-Burlando house, in the heart of Silver City, is listed just below The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose

There has been an outpouring of sympathy for the recent Bull Fire tragedy that claimed eight homes in Riverkern. As the Courier reported two weeks ago, Verizon offered phone forwarding services to people who were evacuated, and the Career Services Center provided emergency services as well. Also, the Seventh Day Adventist Church and the Father’s Heart Foursquare Church held rummage sales to benefit fire victims. Recently we also heard of a benefit tournament at the Kern Valley Golf Course that will be held on Aug. 22 at 9 a.m. for the fire victims. This week our health insurance columnist, Harry Thal of Kernville, announces that he has set up a special donation fund for the fire victims. Thal said, “I am very moved and pained over the tragedy which has so recently destroyed many families in Riverkern and Tehachapi these last few weeks. To this end, I have talked with the Kern Association of Health Underwriters board. We have set up a special fund for this tragedy. Donations are being accepted to

Things I Have Noticed...

Retirement brings pitfalls Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist

Have you been wondering what will happen after retirement? If you live in a big city you can get lost in the vastness of a metropolis that doesn't even know you're there. But if you move to a small town, like here in the Kern River Valley, you are Middleworth fresh meat. With no effort at all and in less than a year, you can become a member of, or a contributor to, several clubs. You can become a deacon or some such of one church or another. You will be asked to join the Chamber of Commerce and any of a number of veterans organizations. The KRV Historical Society has several slots just waiting to be filled, such as a museum guide, nominating committee member or a chairman of something. Rotary wants you. The American Legion is looking for veterans. Pride Day, the valley cleanup campaign, is looking for helpers. The Fish and Game Habitat Club needs help feeding fish. Friends of the Library need more volunteers and will sign you up in a heartbeat. The local Radio Controlled Aircraft Club needs new members and will teach you to fly. The Lake Patrol volunteer group is looking for patrol persons, both men and

women. Help is needed at the fish hatchery. The new BMX track associates would like you to be a part of this new venture and will sign you up forthwith. There are several RV clubs in the area, all looking for new blood. You could teach AARP driver safety to seniors. The theatre groups are just moaning for actors, singers, stagehands and best boys. The list goes on and on. Understand, this is only a partial listing of opportunities for community involvement. Henceforth, never let it be said that you are bored and there's nothing to do. However, there are only 24 hours in a day. So here is my warning to those who retire and move here and who want lots of time for reflection, fishing, and solitude. Tell no one where you live. Build a big fence. Join nothing. Hike alone, picnic alone. Never go anywhere more than once, sign nothing and be constantly on guard for offers to join anything, no matter how innocent. Never raise your hand in meetings. In fact don't go to meetings. That said, and in spite of my warnings, one day you will waver, your defenses will fail, and in the not too distant future you too will join the ranks of the volunteer. Welcome, it's inevitable! Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.

The Kern County Board of Supervisors has again allocated $100,000 to bolster Kern County tourism through their Tourism Promotion Grant Program, which provides funding for promotional efforts intended to attract visitor spending to the region. The program is administered by the Kern County Board of Trade. Workshops designed to guide applicants through the process of obtaining a grant will be held Sept. 21 at the East Kern Airport District Board Room, 1434 Flightline St. in Mojave and on Sept. 23 at the East Bakersfield Veterans Building, 2010 Ridge Road. Workshops are scheduled to begin at 6 pm and are expected to run about 90 minutes. *** Gene Verbeet let us know that the next regular 55/Alive driver’s education program for seniors, sponsored by AARP, will be held Thursday, Sept. 2 (an all day class) from 8 am to 5 pm at the St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Kernville (11900 Sierra Way, Kernville -

across the street from the Hi Ho). Participants must attend the entire day. The course does not involve driving, but does emphasize safe driving procedures for older drivers. In California, a certificate of course completion usually entitles the participant to a reduction in their auto insurance for three years following the date of the class. All materials and workbooks have been updated and include the latest driving information. To learn more, or to enroll, call instructor Gene Verbeet at 3798037. Fees are $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Class size is limited and time is short, so call today. *** The Edward Jones Inc. investment company in Lake Isabella is hosting a free 35-minute educational seminar titled “Annuities and Your Retirement” at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17 at their office at 5520 Lake Isabella Blvd., Suite G-6 A in Lake Isabella. Released the week of Aug. 23: PICK OF THE WEEK There aren't any major movie releases this week, but Boy Howdy are there some awesome TV series boxed sets coming out! Lost: The Complete Sixth & Final Season/Lost: The Complete Collection (Unrated) -- Two huuuuge releases for Losties this week: The final season's boxed set and a massive, goodie-laden collection of the complete series. The Season 6 set is just about what you'd Terry O’Quinn expect: All the episodes, audio commentaries, bloopers, deleted scenes, a couple of supplemental featurettes, plus the much-hyped coda featuring the adventures of Hugo and Ben Linus after the events of the finale as they take on the job of being caretakers of the island. "The Complete Collection" is more than just a boxed set of all six seasons. It's 38 discs (one of which contains all-new neverbefore-seen content); more than 30 hours of bonus material; plus, a replica of the island, episode guide, an ankh, black light and a playable Senet game with black and white stones. The packaging of "The Complete Collection" is simply awesome. Of course, Awesome comes at a price, so expect to pony up anywhere from $150 to $230. Pawn Stars: Season Two (Unrated) -- Just about everyone has their reality-show guilty pleasure. Some folks get their kicks with the guidos on the "Jersey Shore," but for my money, I'll take Las Vegas and

the Harrison clan. The History Channel's "Pawn Stars" is the perfect storm of kitsch, white-trash drama and High Weirdness. It's like "Antiques Roadshow" made a baby with the gang from "American Chopper." Every Monday night, a parade of desperate individuals enter the Harrisons' pawn shop in Las Vegas. Some have odd or interesting stuff to sell, like an antique barber chair or a rare coin or pinball machine, or vintage Army flamethrower. Others bring in things -- like the legendary Taj Mahal Treasure -that make you ask, "Why are these idiots trying to sell this at a pawn shop instead of auctioning it off at Christies?" It's this bizarre mix of the mundane, odd and outright mindblowingly ridiculous that makes "Pawn Stars" one of the most entertaining reality shows on TV. The Season Two set contains all 32 episodes and some bonus footage. MORE TV SERIES "The Simpsons" The Complete Thirteenth Season "Flight of the Conchords" The Complete Collection "90210" The Complete Second Season "Gossip Girl" The Complete Third Season "NCIS: Season Seven" "Ghost Hunters International" Season 1, Part 2 "Yoo Hoo Mrs. Goldberg" "The Patty Duke Show" Season Three "Ax Men" The Complete Season 3 "Ancient Aliens" The Complete Season 1 "Gangland" Complete Season 5 c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

While Christopher is an excellent dramatic actor, I love to see him cut-up in a comedy, so "Wild Oats" is one I'm especially looking forward to.

Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A relaxed mood early in the week could give way to high-temperature disputes. The Aries Lamb should resist being pulled into heated quarrels that could really singe your wool. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Satisfy that practical obligation first, then you can feel free to indulge in your creative endeavors. Also, check for hidden or overlooked areas where repairs might be overdue. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Home is still the Twins' major focus this week. But outside matters begin to take on added importance, especially those involving possible career moves. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A travel plan might need to undergo some considerable adjustment because of unexpected changes. Keep an open mind and let the facts guide you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Playing cat and mouse with a matter you don't really want to tackle wastes time, energy and, most important, an opportunity. Ask someone with experience to help you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A shift in policy might not please you, but before you put up a "No Go" wall of resistance, examine the circumstances. You might be quite pleasantly surprised by what you find. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Yesterday's

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An occasional temperamental flare-up might occur as you continue to help get things back to normal. Stay with it. You should soon get some idea of where to take things next. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A negative reaction to what you believe was a welldeserved request might mean that you need to reconsider your position and make changes. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) There's always room for someone new at the Sea Goat's table. Someone new this week could bring a message you've been waiting a long time to hear. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A pileon of personal matters this week might seem too overwhelming to deal with. But handling them on a one-by-one basis could have you out from under it by the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A friend might need your good advice regarding a matter. Be supportive. But unless you can be absolutely sure you have all the facts, be careful about any suggestions you might be asked to offer. Our real estate prices are good Matt Freeman Kern River Courier Columnist

Oftentimes it is hard in this valley we live in to see larger prospectives on things, real estate being one of them. We are kinda on our own up here, which I love! However, being somewhat isolated, it is good to pay attention to trends in other parts of the country. I say this because last week I was in a small Matt Freeman town called Mustang, Oklahoma (right outside of Oklahoma City) for several days. I was there on vacation and to record a CD with my band-mates for our band Allasso. After all that was done we went around and looked at Oklahoma real estate just to kill some time. We saw some newer neighborhoods and some older neighborhoods and walked through a beautiful brand new home in a very nice newer neighborhood. For one thing, their construction methods are different back there because of weather. We get the occasional earthquake which can wreak havoc, but they get tornadoes, sleet, freezing rain, fog, snow, on and on in the winter and in the summer they are as hot as us but the humidity is real high. Feels like a sauna when you walk outside on some days. The part of Oklahoma that we were in has a

very high water table so most of the homes are brick, with 2X6 walls on the inside. Very nice homes, very well built and most are big, about 1800-2500 sq feet. What struck me the most, though, were their real estate prices, and how similar ours are. I had always thought and had always been told that California real estate is much more pricey than the rest of the country. Well, turns out that is true, in most areas of California. For us, however, it is different. We have some of the lowest prices in the state on average here in the Kern River Valley. Back in Oklahoma, homes were going for about 85 bucks a square foot, for a new place. Here, Kernville goes for that and more, but many areas of the valley are not, they are going for significantly less. I just bought my home for about $52 per sq foot and just sold two others in Lake Isabella at around $78 or so per square foot. That is good! Oklahoma has historically had some of the lower priced real estate in the country, and we are right there with them on our values. This is a huge buyer’s market, and right now interest rates are the lowest they have ever been. A 30-year mortgage is sitting at about 4.5% right now. So, as I always say, go out and buy something! Thal, Kern Burn Victims Fund, PO Box 2137, Kernville, CA 932382137.” Thal went on to advise homeowners and renters to document their possessions. “It is a very arduous task remembering what was lost. ‘Everything’ is pretty hard to replace without a description to go with it. When it comes to your property, the best suggestion is take photographs of your home, yard, and then possessions. Open drawers, cabinets, closets, etc. and shoot away. The use of a video camera can enhance, as you can run an aural description to this photo inventory. This can be loaded onto your computer. If you don't have one, a friend's will do. Then make a disk and store it off premises.”

Letter to the Courier Dear Kern River Courier, Dick Blomgren left his home in Squirrel Valley on July 29 and headed up Shadow Mountain Road to his new building site. When he got to Big Springs, he saw Mike Mollenauer and his friend, Mike Hosking, alongside the road waving at him and pointing to the rear of a vacant lot. He could see smoke from a fire that appeared to be just getting started. Mike and his friend got shovels from their truck and headed back there to put it out. Mike called the fire department. Dick got a shovel and headed back to the fire, and then remembered that he had a weed eater in his truck and went back to get it. It was out of gas, so he had to fill the tank, and then headed back to the fire. The weed eater was very helpful in controlling the fire but the wind was blowing the fire into a lot of heavy weed growth and brush so they had their hands full but managed to keep it under control until the fire department got there and finished the job. Talk about timing – the two Mikes and Dick driving by there just as the fire started and having the means to control it! Nancy Strand Squirrel Valley
