Left to right, Terry Valley, Randy Zurn, Debbie Hess, Tom Moore and Eric Giddens receive a $50,000 donation from Southern California Edison.

Money flows to it Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier Riverside Park in Kernville is the site of planned renovation and improvements. The main goal of this project is to improve visitor experience while protecting Riverside Park by stabilizing the riverbed and banks from future erosion. Construction will include in-stream and bank modifications. This will increase whitewater recreational opportunities, increase fishing opportunities and improve river safety. It is also expected that problems associated with flooding will be reduced. KVRC, (Kern Valley River Council) is the 501(c)3 non profit parent organ-

ization for this project. This is the group that puts on the annual Kern River Festival in April as well as the organizer that ran the highly successful World Cup Wildwater Races in 2003. Riverside Park is one of the Kern River Valley's greatest assets, and has been degrading over the past few years. KVRC hopes to have the opportunity right now to make it a safer, more enjoyable and aesthetically more pleasing place to visit, and to do this without raising taxes on anyone. Their goal is to make park enhancements that will have something for everyone and not just fit the needs of a select few.

Unwelcome visitor It was 10:10 p.m. Sunday night and what sounded like a freight train coming through the wall was that of a California Black Bear. Thats when Bobby Baker of Kernville called 9-1-1. “We see bears here in the area at least once a week, but nothing like this” said Baker. Baker is the caretaker for a property in the area of Burlando

Motorists should be aware that Monday is the first day of school here in the valley, and kids may be suddenly crossing the road in front of you. You need to be extra vigilant. In addition, drivers who have not brushed up on their handbooks lately need to know the law about those flip-out stop signs they put on buses these days. If you see a school bus stop and flip out its stop signs, it means you have to stop -- no matter which way you're going. If the bus is going down the other side of the street, you still have to stop. Penalties for breaking this law can be financially somewhat severe. There is a basic fine for this offense, but the total can double or even triple with California's penalty assessments and traffic school costs on top of that. The exception is that if the school bus is on the other side of a divided or multi-lane (two or more lanes in each direction) highway, you do not need to stop.

and Chaparral Roads. The bear was after the scent of cat food that was stored on the other side of a basement wall. The bear was quite distructive said Baker and should be taken as a warning to others that they need to keep all food put away. The bear was able to tear two openings through the one inch wood siding damaging TV cable and bending the gas line before leaving. Fish and Game is investigating the incident.

Things I Have Noticed...

Kids have most fun outside Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist

Kids have most fun outside Just the other day while taking a walk past the group camping area at Tilly Creek, my wife and I noticed kids and all the fun they were having. It was hot, Middleworth there were no swings, no climbing bars, yet the kids were laughing, playing and having fun camping in a place completely unlike where they probably lived. They were jumping rope, playing hide and seek, and in general, having fun. Nobody was texting, no one was talking on a cell phone. They were playing with each other and talking face to face. It got me to thinking of my kid days and things my brother and I did for fun. Each year mom rented a cabin in SkyForest, in the San Bernardino mountains. The year I remember best was the time we drove there in an old Studebaker that had a rumble seat we got to ride in. (The trunk of the car opens up and has a seat which is open to the world). If you have never ridden in a rumble seat you haven't lived. The wind rushes past, the world is a different place and every-

body waves as you go by. That same year my brother and I got two wagons and raced each other down the hill next to our cabin. The last time we raced we collided and my brother got skinned up and was yelling for Mom. While he was yelling a caterpillar fell out of a tree and into his mouth and he swallowed it. Then he really started yelling. Mom made him swallow Milk of Magnesia. She said it was good for everything, why not a caterpillar? My brother lived, so I guess she was right. Later my brother and I decided to sleep outside under the stars. We were wakened by our garbage can being knocked over by a bear. The porch light was on and we could see him plain as day. We both went screaming into the cabin, waking Mom and Grandma. The bear ran away, but we never slept outside again. Still, it was the best vacation ever and we never forgot it. That was the year we took a long hike from home and got lost. We couldn't find our house. We were both scared and crying and some neighbor found us and took us home. We were only a block away.

Letters to the Courier Picture brings back many happy memories Dear Kern River Courier, I saw the picture on page 14 in the July 29th Courier of the Weldon Store asking if anyone knew the location and also saying the date was unknown. It looks like it did to me during 1956 through 1958, for the two and a half years my parents raised potato crops for Mr. Metler of Bakersfield in the Onyx and Weldon areas. My family traded there regularly and it was also the Weldon Post Office and we had a P.O. box there. It was located on the corner of Faye Canyon Road across from South Fork School, and the South Fork Woman's Club was on the same side of the road, behind the store. It was in the

sixties when the P.O. was moved out on its own. During 1958 it was a special stop for our school bus once every couple weeks if we kids had been on our best behavior. All of us kids worked at getting that stop, so we policed each other and ourselves. That bus driver won an award three years in a row I know of for the bestbehaved loads in the a.m. and p.m. The picture brought back so many happy memories. So many I kept wandering away from the question of its location, it took five tries to keep it down to this short. Most were one to one and a half long pages long in a school notebook. Thanks Arthur for the memories and I'll be keeping the picture to tell stories to my grand and great grandkids. Jane Hixon, Onyx

School Continued from page 1 For those buses not equipped with the stop signs, it would be good to remember that school buses flash their yellow lights when they are preparing to stop, and then their red lights when they come to a stop. You should prepare to stop when the yellow flashes, and then stop when the red lights come on. You must stop from either direction until the children are safely across the street and the lights stop flashing. The law requires you remain stopped as long as the red lights are flashing (CVC §22454). Remember, the start of school means extra vigilance for drivers. The kids may be excited and they may forget to look both ways before they dart out in front of you, so be prepared.

Riverside Park Continued from page 1 The permit process is expected to take some time; however, if all goes well, KVRC projects to begin construction in the fall of 2012. If construction starts on schedule, the first phase of construction will be finished in the early spring of 2013. How much is done in the first phase mainly depends on how much money is raised, but the permit will be valid for an extended period of time, allowing the phasing in of additional parts of the projects in the future. The river right (west) side of the river is owned by the county and operated as a county park. The river left (east) side is privately owned Frandy Campground. Both parties are aware of the project and excited about the possibilities. It is the hope of KVRC that the ren-

ovation will increase tourism dollars, and give people who live here an opportunity to watch fun events and experience a variety of cultural phenomena that we might have missed before. The extent of the current plans are from the bridge to Jakes pond (just below the park). Right now there are no plans to extend the project area farther downstream. Kern County will manage all activities and maintenance. So as far as any events scheduled in the Park, a user would continue the park permiting process through the Kern County Parks and Recreation Department. The main focus of the project will be on the park side of the river. A "dream" design would include features on the Frandy side, however, it will depend on fund raising success before work on that side of the river is considered.

Within the individual plates are the islands, archipelagos, island chains, volcanoes, hot spots, guyots, atolls, etc. that are NOT necessarily associated with the boundary sutures. When you're talking about real Wild West characters, another was Charlie Goodnight. Leathertough Charles Goodnight (18361920) was born into a German family in Illinois. His father died of pneumonia when he was five, his mother remarried and the family relocated to the Brazos River in Texas when little Charley was nine. At 12, he was breaking mustangs. At 15, he was a jockey who California Joe won many horse races for his overjoyed stepfather. In 1856, Charles partnered with his stepbrother J. Wes Sheek, tending 430 cows belonging to neighbor Claiborn Varner. In return, they could keep every fourth newborn calf. By 1860 the pair had 180 head. The Civil War suspended their burgeoning bovine business. Goodnight served as a Texas Ranger Confederate scout. In 1864, he returned to find his portion of the herd had grown to 5,000 head. He and Sheek negotiated to buy the entire Varner herd, and by 1865, they had 8,000 head. In 1866, Goodnight met 54-yearold Oliver Loving and changed business partners. The great cattle

drives were starting, and Goodnight wanted to do it his way. He wanted to drive his cattle to the Colorado frontier by way of New Mexico. That summer, he, Loving, and 18 cowboys set out with 2,000 longhorns across what would come to be known as the "Goodnight-Loving Trail" to Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Goodnight made rawhide history as he drove those cattle. As an example of the hardships they faced, the Concho River represented the last water for 92 miles. From there, he pushed the herd 72 hours without a break. At 2 a.m. on the third night, the cows smelled the waters of the Pecos 12 miles away, and stampeded the rest of the way. Though 300 head dropped during the forced march and another 100 drowned in the final confusion, the trip was a financial success. Most were sold to the government. Loving drove the remaining cattle on to Denver. Goodnight went back to Texas with $12,000 in his saddlebags. If you want to see a good movie about the cattle drives, John Wayne made "Red River" and you should see it. It's a classic. California Joe is the storyteller persona of Stevenson Phillips, an actor and singer living in Kernville. You may reach him at sscaljoe@aol.com
