The town of Riverkern and areas of the Sequoia National Forest northeast and northwest of the small community were the scene of a rapid and devastating firestorm three weeks ago. Eight homes were destroyed and over 16,000 forest acres were burned. Now that the fire has been fully contained, a special team has moved in to assess the damage to the forest and recommend quick rehabilitation procedures. After the flames have died down in forest fires, threats still remain. Heavy rain this fall could bring landslides or rockslides. The "fire-flood cycle" is a phenomenon well-known in Southern California. Fires burn off vegetation in the water runoff areas (watersheds) and the subsequent rapid runoff and increased sediment is washed into streams, causing mudslides and rockfalls. The group that deals with this is called a BAER (Burned Area Emergency Response) Team. BAER teams have done much post-fire work in California. The Bull Fire BAER Team arrived in

The Kern River Valley Art Association has expanded their annual Labor Day Sierra Arts and Crafts Festival to include two workshops at the Odd Fellows Hall in Kernville on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday preceding Labor Day Weekend. This is a wonderful opportunity for locals and visitors to work with professional artists to learn new skills and enhance their artistic abilities. The first one is a Still Life Drawing Class by Claire Putney (661-331-0774). It takes place from 9 am to 3 pm on Thursday, Sept. 2 and from 9 am to noon, on Friday, Sept. 3. The cost is $50 per participant (includes workshop supplies). No previous experience is necessary. Instructor will furnish graphite,
The Kern River Valley Public Cemetery District unanimously repealed the controversial Resolution #119 at its Aug. 17 meeting, effectively dissolving the Citizen’s Advisory Committee and its board set up to help coordinate with federal and state agencies. This action puts “coordination” on hold. The Kern River Valley Public Cemetery District is waiting for an expected communication from Kern County Counsel on the coordination issue. The Kern County Grand Jury, seated this past July, is set to consider citizen complaints as well. Resolution #118 was left in place, permitting the possiblity of the cemetery board seeking coordination in the future.

The road will be closed on Aug. 23 and 24 in the vicinity of Boone Meadow to Vista Point. There will also be single-lane closures with delays at various places on the road until Sept. 8. During the construction and repair, drivers are encouraged to drive cautiously as they may encounter working road crews, heavy equipment, dusty road conditions, and fresh pavement.
Animal protection group has new vet Marcela Freerks Special to the Courier
The R.E.V.A. group (the acronym means “Responsible Ethical Volunteers for Animals”) has lined up a veterinarian to help out at the proposed low-cost spay/neuter clinic. Dr. Kendra Jiannuzzi is making herself acquainted with the pets of our valley. She has started helping Dr. Vicky Boyer at the Kernville Animal Hospital, and once the clinic starts operating, she will be available as needed. Dr. Kendra believes that, because she loves
animals, such a service is not only important for people, but also absolutely necessary for reduction of the overpopulation of pets. She was saddened by the misery she saw while working in San Diegoarea shelters - which Dr. Kendra are pretty much representative of most shelters statewide. When Dr. Kendra first came to the valley,

Things I Have Noticed...
Technology was absent Recently I was reminiscing about the old days and differences that have come about with the advances of technology. I've noticed that the heart yearns for simpler times and a slower pace. Here, in no particular order, are some Middleworth examples of “back when.” Before automatic transmissions our cars had a stick shift on the floor. If done properly, the male driver could find himself “accidentally” brushing the knee of his winsome date while shifting. It was a start! Vegetables were always fresh. There were no frozen foods. The first frozen food we ever saw was Birds-Eye at Safeway. We had to eat the frozen stuff right away because we only had an ice box (it used block ice for cooling). A big change from times past was replacement of the outside toilet. The outhouse sat outside in the weather and captured the temperature of the hour. On cold days putting your bare behind on the ice cold seat was a real wakerupper. During the winter we had to dig a path to the damn thing before we could use it.
We had no Charmin and instead used pages from old Sears catalogs. We had a dime store in town that actually sold things for a dime. It was also the place to go for a cherry phosphate. When we washed clothes we used a wringer washer. After the wash cycle you fed the wet clothes through two rollers that squeezed water out of the fabric. There was a big button on top of the wringer that you could smack and would release the wringer action if you accidentally caught your hand in the rollers. Today the authorities would have a fit if stores sold a machine like that. I remember when we got our first portable radio. It used eight D-size batteries for power and weighed about 4 pounds. It was the size of a box of saltine crackers. We weren't allowed to use it much because the batteries wore out too soon. Most of the time we just looked at it. Yep, those were the “good old days.” Just think, someday today will be the good old days. I wonder what we'll remember? Letter to the Courier Dear Kern River Courier, There has been much talk about "our" Saturdays' Farmers' Market at the Indian Culture Center at French Gulch. Hopefully the talk is not intending to destroy our efforts for success. Word has gotten back to us that we are closed down, that we don't have our permits, etc. Not true, we are open. We have all our required permits. We are a U.S. Department of Agriculture Certified Farmers' Market. We have our certificate to operate from Kern County Department of Agriculture and we operate under a Special Use Permit with the U.S. Forest Service - Sequoia National Forest, the only one anywhere with this kind of partnership. The Forest Service is well aware of everything we do, and assist and encourage us along the way. There has been criticism of (the) signs at the highway (of which we have no control). This has been a problem for many years, not just since the Farmers' Market started. There are restrictions. No hand painted signs and permission to add signs must be gotten. Designs must be approved. One sign that was approved was stolen. It is very complicated and regulated. Many departments of transportation are involved along with the State, County, and Forest Service. Our local Forest Service has made every effort to solve the problem, in fact, one solution is in the making now. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience. We, the Kern River Paiute Council that manage the Nuui Cunni Indian Cultural Center, are volunteers and we continue to work to make and keep it a special place of interest to the Indian communities, locals, and visitors. We are a non-profit; we belong to the Chambers of Commerce, KRV Museum, KRV Art Association, and support many organizations and activities, assist families and causes, and participate in valley functions. Funding comes from our leasing the facility for activities, fundraisers, donations, our Friends of the Center program, craft classes, etc. and grants. We are growing and it takes more and more funds to operate. We are responsible for all maintenance and operations and are continually making improvements. The Farmers' Market was originated to help with the expenses. We are not going to let it fail. We encourage growers, artists, crafters, etc. to please join us, we need you with us. We don't want false information to deter anyone on our efforts to make it successful. We appreciate the support we have received and strive to give necessary needs to everyone. Greener way to deal with ants Richard Cayia Rowe Special to the Courier
Up to this year, I've found AMBRO Ant Block very effective in keeping ants out of my house. But, I wondered about its toxicity and whether there might be a “greener” alternative. Its active ingredient is Hydramethylnon, which is especially toxic to fish. EPA classifies Richard Rowe hydramethylnon as a possible human carcinogen. Boric acid is a good alternative. And it probably comes from nearby Trona just outside of Ridgecrest. Borax is a salt of boric acid mined from Trona's dry Searles Lake. Boric acid was first registered in the U.S. as an insecticide in 1948 for control of cockroaches, termites, fire ants, fleas, silverfish, and many other insects. It acts as a stomach poison affecting the insects' metabolism, and the dry powder is abrasive to the insects' exoskeleton. Sugar-loving ants, such as house ants, are the easiest to con-
trol by using baits. Boric acid is generally considered to be safe to use in household kitchens to control cockroaches and ants. Homemade ant bait can be made by dissolving 1 teaspoon powdered boric acid and 10 teaspoons sugar into 2 cups of water; this mixture can then be absorbed into cotton balls which are left near ant trails. This reportedly will be carried back into the ants' nest, killing any ants that eat it, potentially destroying the entire colony. Easy-to-make Bait for Protein and Grease-Loving Ants: Mix together 2 ounces or 4 Tablespoons of peanut butter with 3 ounces or 6 Tablespoons of honey and add 3/4 teaspoon of boric acid. Boric acid is generally considered to be not much more toxic than table salt, But boric acid is poisonous if taken internally or inhaled in large quantities (as little as a fifth of an ounce). So, put it where kids and pets won't be tempted. Richard Rowe is a retired city planner, living in Wofford Heights. He is website administrator of KRVR.org for Kern River Valley Revitalization.

Courier Fishing Report
River great, lake not Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier columnist
Well, here we are in the Dog Days of Summer. The lake level is receding, the algae is using up its share of the lake’s oxygen, and the fish, it seems, are on holiday. Have no fear, deep water is clean and near, but mostly for those with a Mike Mencarini boat. Recent discussions with some local bass anglers revealed schools of shad and schools of crappie showing in 35 feet of water. With the lake temperature being very warm and the oxygen level being at its low point, shore fishing should be slow except for catfish, carp and bluegill (if you can find them.) However ... the upper river is awesome. The upper river from the cemetery to Brush Creek is stocked full of better-than-average rainbow trout. The upper
river, with its cool water and low flow, offers the solitary fly fisherman, a couple of buddies, or mom, dad and the whole family, a safe and very enjoyable way to spend their recreational time. I haven’t left out the lower river. There are lots of fish from Sandy Flat to Live Oak day use areas, but a word of caution. Isabella is an agricultural lake. The water is used mostly for farming. The flow is up, which makes certain sections of the lower river more challenging and should be used by those possessing knowledge of whitewater or a real good knowledge of the lower Kern. So grab the rods and reels, your buddies, or the family, and go and have a great time fishing. Please be safe and don’t litter. Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and a volunteer at the Kern River Fish Hatchery. For questions or comments you can reach himr through the Kern River Courier, office@kernrivercourier.com.

Back to School with movies
Celebrity question answered
Released the week of Aug. 30: PICK OF THE WEEK Unless you're champing at the bit to get "Marmaduke" on DVD, there really aren't any notable movie releases this week. However, we are in the Back to School season, so to get you in the mood, here's a list of some of classic school movies you might want to revisit: "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" (Unrated) -Robert Donat won the Best Actor Oscar in 1939 (beating out James Stewart, Clark Gable and Laurence Olivier) for his performance as the headmaster of an English boarding school. "Goodbye Mr. Chips" tells the John Belushi story of Mr. Chipping, spanning his 50 years at the fictional school, from his first day as an unsure Latin teacher to a wizened old headmaster beloved by thousands. The enchanting Greer Garson made her first film appearance as Chipping's young wife, who tragically dies in childbirth. Although the film can be a little heavy-handed with sentimentality, it is a heartwarming and entertaining movie from Hollywood's Golden Age that still holds up today. "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (Rated R) -- Before John Hughes showed up and ruined the teen movie genre (yeah, I said it!), there was "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" -- a film more true-to-life than anything that hack ever churned out. It also launched the careers of Cameron Crowe, Amy Heckerling, Sean Penn, Judge Reinhold and Jennifer Jason Leigh. And let's face it, most guys from my generation saw that movie at least 10 times just for that scene with Phoebe Cates coming out of the swimming pool wearing that awesome red bikini. (Rated PG) -- The Ramones bring down Vince Lombardi High School with the power of their rock in this low-budget Roger Corman cult classic. The acting is horrible, the jokes are cheesy, but it doesn't matter. The movie has such a frantic, anarchic energy to it that you can't stop watching. "National Lampoon's Animal House" (Rated R) -The movie that spawned a thousand high-school cafeteria food fights and made John Belushi a movie star, "Animal House" is the greatest college comedy ever made. Its story about a fraternity of losers, slobs and outcasts getting revenge on the snooty rich kids has been used as a template for hundreds of films ever since. "Back to School" (Rated PG-13) -- How can I do a Back to School feature and NOT include this Rodney Dangerfield comedy classic? Rodney stars as Thornton Melon, a rich guy who returns to college in order to get closer to his son. He's so rich he gets NASA and Kurt Vonnegut Jr. to do his homework for him. But Melon's hijinks have a price, and he learns there are some things money can't buy. Prescription costs way up Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist
While on vacation, I had the opportunity to do something I rarely have time to do otherwise – watch television. At home I do get to see my favorite shows, but they are recorded so I can breeze through the commercials. The hotels don't provide a TiVo, so I saw commercials I normally would be Harry Thal zipping past. One category of commercials is coming from attorneys. The commercial was seeking people who have either died or had a bad reaction to a medication for lung cancer. Now, I am in favor of people being compensated for having harm brought on them. But, I also understand that attorneys receive about one third of settlements. As the ads imply that there are compensation funds for victims of this medication, and there must be thousands of these said "victims", we are talking huge amounts of money. Last time a looked, only the government can print money, so the pharmaceutical companies must be getting these tens of millions of dollars from someplace… the high cost of medication. I am old enough to remember when you could get an over-the-
R.E.V.A. R.E.V.A.
counter medication in an easy to use bottle. Just twist, and you can take your medication. Today, we must fight through layers of seals, plastics, and warnings to get to the medication, because some sickos contaminated medicine a few decades ago. The product manufacturers first had to recall their products from the shelves. This was costly. They had to design and implement new packaging – another huge cost. Then they settled some lawsuits, had to restock the shelves, and finally, you could get your medicine again. Even brands not contaminated saw the "writing on the wall" and also protected themselves and the consumer with new improved safe packaging. Once again, they don't have money printing presses. The doctor's office has their own need to spend money needlessly to protect them from being prosecuted. Was the lab test really necessary, or did your physician just need to have the backup support in your file in case you sue for malpractice? So, when you are charged outrageous amounts for that tiny little pill, remember, your prescription costs are contributing to a fund "in case" there are legal issues in the future. Harry P. Kernville this past week. These multiagency, multi-disciplined resource specialists are assembled to assess post fire watershed response, fire damage, fire suppression efforts and prepare mitigation measures. The team consists of hydrologists, soil scientists, geologists, Geographic Information System (GIS) specialists, archaeologists, botanists, wildlife specialists, aquatic biologists, hazardous materials specialists, engineering/road/trail specialists and foresters. Treatments are recommended to minimize damage from rainfall on the burned area and to protect homes as well as roads and other infrastructure. Some of the treatments might be heli-mulching, contour log felling, straw wattles, installation of safety signing, clearing culverts, installing additional drainage structures, repairing roads and stormproofing trails. When the fire is over, the danger to nearby homes and property is not. BAER teams are there to try to limit flood damage before it starts.
Jesse Martinez of R.E.V.A. took her to visit Dr. Vicki's clinic. What a surprise they experienced when Dr. Vicki and Dr. Kendra realized that they attended the same class at Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where they knew each other rather well! Dr. Kendra recently traveled to Perris, Calif. to the professional medical outfitting company outtitting the mobile clinic. There she helped properly design the necessary medical equipment inside. The final cost estimate of the completed clinic is to be about $120,000. The majority of this money still needs to be raised. Various fundraisers are helping to accomplish this. The next one is Saturday, Aug. 21. It’s called “R.E.V.A.'s 2nd Annual Fund Raiser Dance" and it will be held at the Senior Center in Lake Isabella from 6 to 10 p.m. (See the Courier Calendar on page 2 for details.) Donations are also being requested. Your donations are tax-deductible. Contact Jesse Martinez at (760) 378-3101 or write to Jessecritter@aol.com. The clinic’s non-profit status has been approved with Aug. 28 as the effective date. The group just needs the infusion of funds to give them a green light, and from there it will take only 6-8 weeks for the clinic to be fully operable.

Prior to that Dr. Kendra had practiced in Indiana for eight years, until she moved to Southern California.
D r. Kendra is married; her husband's name is Chris, and they have two beautiful girls, Emma, 10, and Olivia, 6.
