Serving the Kern River & Isabella Lake Communities

The Kern Valley experienced a “once in a blue moon” in night sky this week. A blue moon is an extra full moon that appears in a subdivision of a year, either the third of four full moons in a season or, recently, a second full moon in a month of the common calendar. Metaphorically, a “blue moon” is a rare event, as in the expression “once in a blue moon.” The phrase has nothing to do with the actual color of the moon, although a literal “blue moon” (the moon appearing with a tinge of

The Kern County Fire Department received calls on Monday, Aug. 19 reporting numerous lightning strikes beginning at about 9:15 p.m. and spreading throughout the Greater Lake Isabella area. Eight reported fires were started and four were immediately contained. Crews were faced with dry lightning, steep terrain, and windy conditions. The lightning settled down for a short time and started up at around 5 a.m. The incident escalated in size to the point where resources were brought in from around the state to help battle the fires. Six hundred acres were burned. There were no injuries and no structures were threatened or destroyed. A total of 13 engines, eight patrols, two air tankers, four helicopters, two water tenders, four bulldozers and two fire crews totaling 95 personnel were utilized. Te m p e r a t u r e s have exceeded 100 degrees with additional thunderstorms forming. KCFD is asking residents to use extreme caution when working outdoors. The U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, CAL Fire, Kern County Sheriff’s Deptartment and the California Highway Patrol all cooperated in the fighting of these fires. Thunder and lightning storms are forecast again next week. If you spot a fire starting, be sure to call 9-1-1. Don’t assume that your neighbor has called.

The term “blue moon” is usually used nowadays to describe a second full moon in a single solar calendar month, which happens every two to three years (seven times in the Metonic cycle of 19 years). Using the Maine Farmers” Almanac definition of blue moon (meaning the third full moon in a season of four full moons, and where the seasons are marked by equal three-month intervals between solstices and equinoxes as opposed to calendar quarters), blue moons have occurred or will occur on:

According to the Bakersfield Californian, Highway 178 will remain closed at least through Sunday, due to concerns about the roadway's stability following mud and rock slides. Previously, it was announced that the highway would reopen on Thursday. There is still uncertainty about the condition of the highway shoulder and the hillsides above that were damaged by rain

The largest fires currently burning in the Sequoia National Forest are the Shirley and Tenant Fires known as the "Shirley Complex" located in the Kern River Ranger District. Making the crooked straight Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist I usually enjoy driving the Kern Canyon, especially when there’s no one else around - no slow folks who don’t know about using the turn-outs in Schlensker front of me, or guys coming up from behind, who think they are competing on a Grand Prix course, flashing their lights, honking their horns and displaying their right turn signals. And in spite of the solid double yellow lines, I also must admit to - when it’s totally safe, of course straightening out the curves a bit. In any case, however much I enjoy the challenge of driving the canyon, when I am finished with the curves and either get to the four-lane coming up the canyon, or the straight, flat road at the bottom, I am a little relieved to be done with the squiggles. I think I can identify a little bit with the ideas of John the Baptizer in the wilderness, when he quoted the prophet, Isaiah: “Make ready the way of the Lord, Make His paths straight. Every ravine shall be filled up, And every mountain and hill shall be brought low; And the crooked shall

become straight, And the rough roads smooth; And all flesh shall see the salvation of God" (Luke 3:4-6, NAS). The “road” between God and people, needed some - no, lots of - work! Because of His holiness and His zerotolerance-level for disobedience and rebelliousness, God was repulsed by His fallen, sinful, human creatures. But the “salvation of God” was about to be revealed. Great relief came to Lake Isabella folks when the new four-lane freeway replaced the last section of the old Kern Canyon Road a few years ago. Similarly, Jesus, of Whom John the Baptizer said, “Behold the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world,” was to become the Road to God for all people, replacing the impassible chasm that separated them from God. That’s why Jesus said of Himself, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.” (John 14:6). It was not bulldozers, earth-movers and road graders that did the work to build the Road to God; it was a human birth of the God-man, His perfect life, brutal torture and death on a cross on a hill outside Jerusalem. That’s what constructed for us the Road to Jesus. Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lake Isabella.

Seven Godly virtues, No. 5 Janet Kutzner, Courier Columnist This is a continuation of the examination of the Seven Godly Virtues with a look at the most blessed of virtues Charity. This is Kutzner the virtue that opposes the vice of Greed because rather than seeking anything for itself, Charity seeks to pour out itself for another. Simply stated, the virtue of Charity is the virtue of Love. This is not the love that is spoken of in greeting cards, the romantic or emotional love. This is not the love of physical passion of which so much of our society seems to be obsessed. This is the love that St. Paul wrote about in First Corinthians chapter 13. This Love does not come from emotion or strength of discipline (though all three of these are aspects. This love is the gift of the Holy Spirit - given freely to those who open their hearts and minds and simply ask. We are now celebrating the season of Pentecost, and as we do we remember the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to send the Holy Spirit. The gift of Love (agape) comes directly from the Holy Spirit - let us pray that God the Holy Spirit will fill us with this most sacred and holy gift…and perhaps more importantly put that gift into action. As St. Paul wrote: “If I speak in the tongues of men

and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. So now faith, hope and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13 ESV). Reprinted in part, from Bishop Eric Menees, of the San Joaquin Diocese. Janet Kutzner is a Lay Eucharistic Minister at St. Peter's Anglican Church, Kernville.

Antler, Fin & Feather Report

The tale of the take line Mike Mencarini Courier Columnist Recently I came across a phrase I had not heard of before. Since Isabella Lake is a Corps of Engineers lake, I thought some of Mencarini you might find it as interesting as I did. The phrase “take line” refers to a line or boundary around a lake from which the Corps literally “takes” the land from a predetermined survey, from that line to the water’s edge is deemed not usable by the landowners. It now belongs to the Corps. The Corps, from time to time, will re-establish existing Corps boundary lines by locating survey monuments, clearing brush along existing boundary lines, replacing or painting new boundary markers such as; line post, trees, and survey monuments that serve as reference points. I am not sure where the “take line” is on Isabella Lake, but I am going to do some hiking around the lake for the purpose of locating this line in the sand, if for no other reason, just because I’m curious.

The bass fishing was pretty good up to the full moon. My understanding is that the fish may have preferred a moon tan over a sun tan. The good news is the moon is on the decrease now, so the fishing should warm back up. The shad have been swimming for their lives recently with small bass getting their winter weight on. The word is that there are lots and lots of 13 to 15-inch bass just devouring the shad. Remember, there is a 15-inch size limit and a two fish possession limit stipulated in the Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations for Isabella Lake. There is now, more than ever, a serious problem for lake visitors and even some of our regular fisherman with boats who are not truly familiar with the structure at this low water level. Please be extra careful and do your best to avoid the lake’s many structural hazards. As the lake level continues to drop, more and more stickups and rock piles and fence rows become unveiled. Those in-theknow go slow. Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and avid fisherman. For questions or comments you can reach him through the Kern River Couier.

Don’t see ‘Now You See Me’ By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “Now You See Me” (PG-13) — Four magicians (Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Jesse Eisenberg and Dave Franco) are paid by a wealthy investor to do a magic show in which they empty a bank vault in France and shower the money all over their audience in America. Various law enforcement agencies are not so impressed, and an international investigation starts - trying to pull back the curtain on what appears to be some kind of heist cover-up deal. This movie is more obsessed with plot twists than entertaining the audience. Everybody knows that magic tricks are a lot less impressive when they’re in a movie - you got out of those handcuffs with editing, Jesse Eisenberg, not sleight of hand or magic. The film tries to inject thrills through swirling cameras and super-plottwists that don’t delight as much as they annoy. “From Up on Poppy Hill” (PG) — Umi is a thoughtful girl living in Japan in 1963. While her country is gearing up for hosting the 1964 Olympics, the devastation of World War II lingers. In the scenic port town of Yokohama, Umi raises flags in her front yard in remembrance of her father, who died at sea. Shy Umi and her flags catch the attention of a classmate, and a romance starts to grow

Jesse Eisenberg in “Now You See Me” between the two kids while they learn about past and future, youth and age. Studio Ghibli has long been recognized as one of the finest animation outfits in the world. Their films are usually poignant, touching and wondrous. This time around, legendary director Hayao Miyazaki provides the script, and gives the directing duty to his son, Goro Miyazaki.. “Stories We Tell” (Not Rated) — Some stories we tell a million times over, and they change just a bit each time just as our memories of the events change. This unique documentary collects stories from the filmmaker’s (Sarah Polley) family, showing that stories and memories often are contradictory, and the truth is hard to be sure of. The documentary has a double-investigation, as the Polleys’ interviews begin to look into the secret kept by the long-past mother of the family. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) A little wool-gathering for the usually productive Lamb is all right if it helps you unwind. But be careful; too much daydreaming can put you behind schedule in your work. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A work problem is close to being resolved. Now you can go ahead and celebrate the week, accepting invitations from friends who enjoy your company. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting your new plan accepted won’t be a major hassle if you have the facts to back it up. Your supporters are also prepared to help you make your case. Good luck. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Dealing with a pesky job problem might be time-consuming but necessary. The sooner you get this situation settled, the sooner you can move on to other matters. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Career advancement is favored thanks to your impressive work record. On the personal side, you should soon hear some good news about an ailing family member. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) There might be mixed signals from a certain someone who doesn’t seem all that certain about his or her intentions. Best to sort it all out before it becomes more confusing.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Get all the facts about that investment “opportunity” before you put even one dollar into it. There could be hidden problems that could prove to be costly. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Compromising on a matter you feel strongly about not only ends the impasse, but can be a win-win deal for all. Remember: Scorpios do well with change. Canyon,

hillsides on the river side were saturated. They said, 'We don't want anything shaking loose during the cleanup. We're looking at a closure through the weekend now. At least Sunday, unless tomorrow morning, our geologist gives us some other news." Camarena told the Californian that a Caltrans geologist from Sacramento arrived in Kern River Canyon Wednesday afternoon, joining crews from Granite Construction Company which have worked around-the-clock since Tuesday afternoon clearing the highway. Other news sources report that Cal-Trans hopes to have at least one lane open early next week, and that Caltrans said it needs to rebuild parts of the road after the debris is cleared, including highway foundation, pavement and guardrails. Closures may continue for a longer period of time if necessary. The rain created a big travel headache for many in Kern County following the mudslides. There was one near the mouth of the canyon and one near Bodfish, according to one news outlet.

make sure you don't get the "California Howdy" from the locals. ■ Stay in your lane. It might look like a one-lane road, but it's not. Please remember that there are other cars coming from the opposite way. If you can't stay in your lane around the turns, slow down! It is most unpleasant to come around a corner and find another car coming at you in your lane. ■ Watch for cows. This is range land; you will most likely see cows, sometimes in the road. Drive carefully and remember to "Moo" at them when you pass. ■ If you someone rides your bumper, pull over. Don't wait for five or six cars to line up like you do in the canyon. Yes, it's rude to tailgate, but it's not your job to make sure all the people behind you don't go too fast. They are probably locals who know how to drive that road blindfolded (although I don't recommend it). ■ Enjoy the drive! Don't forget to wave at the cars passing by, but remember to use all your fingers! Thanks!

Forest Service Fire Lookouts and aircraft will continue to look for more fires as storms continue to move through the area. Lightning caused fires can go undetected for days or weeks until forest materials dry enough to allow flames to spread to the surface. Visitors are asked to call ahead to check on latest road conditions and obtain weather forecasts prior to travel in the mountains.
