A new school year begins and as parents purchase school clothes, backpacks and lunch boxes, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) wants to remind them to prepare their kids with ways to arrive at school and home safely every school day. At the same time, drivers need to be extra vigilant. "Remind your kids how important safety on your streets is to you and them; that they need to be careful every time they leave the house. Drivers, especially those dropping off kids, need to stay focused and on the lookout for children," said OTS Director Christopher J. Murphy. The following safe walking, bicycling and driving practices can only be effective if parents teach their kids early and often, and set good examples themselves: Walking

Letters to the Courier Closing brings great sadness Over a month ago the staff and volunteers of the Pregnancy Resource Center learned that Youth 2000 was closing, news that brought us great sadness. We understand that Mary David has applied for a new grant in the hopes of being able to reopen their office. Youth 2000 had been in the community for over a decade, and they have provided very valuable education to the teenagers of our area in the field of pregnancy prevention and related subjects. This is something that the PRC is not yet equipped to handle, and while we hope to increase our services over time, we currently do not have the materials nor the staff and volunteers to fill the void that is left by Youth 2000 closing. We will continue to provide our services - peer counseling, pregnancy tests, materials assistance, and referrals - to all those who have a need. We will pray that the Youth 2000 proposed grant is awarded, so that our community will continue to benefit from both Youth 2000 and the Pregnancy Resource Center. In the meantime, we'd like to hear from the community if you want the PRC to add more programs and you are willing to support us with time and funds to do so. It is our desire to help make the KRV the best community in which to live. In the meantime....we are still open, and plan to be here for a very long time. In His service joyfully, Myrtle Pierce, Executive Director Pregnancy Resource Center of the Kern River Valley

Volunteers will be required to do an application and short orientation to hospice, but we promise to make that as easy as possible for them. We will work around the volunteer's schedule. We do pay mileage for all miles traveled on behalf of hospice. If you may be willing to help, please contact the volunteer department at (661) 716-4000 or email: rfrankhauser@optimalcares.com.

Free Fishing September 3rd California Fish Game Special to Courier The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) invites Californians to kick off their Labor Day weekend celebration by fishing in our state's spectacular waters. Saturday, Sept. 3 is the second of California's two 2011 Free Fishing Days, when people can try their hand at fishing without having to buy a sport fishing license. All fishing regulations, such as bag and size limits, gear restrictions, report card requirements, fishing hours and stream closures remain in effect. Every angler must have an appropriate report card if they are fishing for abalone, steelhead, sturgeon or spiny lobster anywhere in the state, or salmon specifically in the Smith and Klamath-Trinity River systems. DFG offers two Free Fishing Days each year - usually in conjunction with the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekend - when it's legal to fish without a sport fishing license. This year, the Free

Fishing Days were set for the Saturdays preceding Independence Day and Labor Day (July 2 and Sept. 3) because they fall on holiday weekends, when a fishing excursion is likely to be most convenient for the public. Free Fishing Days provide a lowcost way to give fishing a try. Some DFG regions offer Fishing in the City programs where you can go fishing in major metropolitan areas. Fishing in the City and Free Fishing Day clinics are designed to educate novice anglers about fishing ethics, fish habits, effective methods for catching fish and fishing tackle. You can even learn how to clean and prepare your catch so you can enjoy it for dinner that night. Anglers should check the rules and regulations at www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations/ for the waters they plan to fish. Wardens will be on duty to enforce them. For more information on Free Fishing Days, please visit www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/fishing/f reefishdays.html.

Distracted or hurried parents sometimes forget about safety once their own kids have been dropped off. Stay extra alert in or near school driveways or drop off zones. ■ What's good for the kids are good for drivers too - no cell phone talking or texting while driving. Watch what's going on around you. And make sure your kids won't be calling you while you are driving. ■ When school buses stop to load or unload passengers, and its "Red Lights are Flashing," all vehicles must stop - in both directions. If the bus stop is on a divided highway, then only those vehicles approaching from the rear must stop. School Buses: ■ If your child rides a school bus, make sure that he or she knows to remain seated at all times, to keep the aisles clear, not to throw objects, not to shout or distract the driver, and to keep his or her hands and arms inside of the bus. ■ The California school bus is one of the safest modes of transportation in the world, but everyone must do their part to be safe when traveling near buses transporting kids, whether in motion or stopped.

Smith is the one about whom many refer, mostly unknowingly, saying, "It ain't over 'till the fat lady sings." Wikipedia states, "Smith's plump figure made her an occasional object of derision; however, late in her career, Philadelphia Flyers hockey fans lovingly said about her appearance before games, 'It ain't begun 'til the fat lady sings!'" The entry also notes, "On July 21, 2011, Kate Smith's version of "God Bless America" was played as NASA's final wake up call for the space shuttle Atlantis, capping the 30-year shuttle program." A sportswriter, Dan Cook used the amended saying, which stuck.Because popular information is often used without understanding, I look for the evidence that one sentence in Isaiah gives meaning to otherwise overlooked passages. In Psalms we are told to, "Let this be recorded for a generation to come, so that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD…", "…that they may declare in Zion the name of the LORD, and in Jerusalem his praise when peoples gather together, and kingdoms, to worship the LORD." The Ford brothers were guests in Jesse James' St. Joseph, Mo. home on the Monday morning of Apri 3,1882. They were planning the robbery of the Platte City Bank. Seeing that a picture on the wall wasn't straight, Jesse unbuckled his two gun belts, and pulled a chair over to the wall. Then he stepped up. The Fords looked at each other, numbed by their luck. Bob Ford slipped his California Joe .45 Smith and Wesson out of his holster and pointed it at the back of Jesse's head. Steadying himself, he squeezed the trigger. James turned, stared wild-eyed for a split-second, and then fell to the floor. The brothers ran from the death scene, Bob shouting loudly, "I just killed Jesse James!" At Jesse's funeral, his mother became hysterical, wailing, "Jesse! Jesse! They have taken you from me, the miserable traitors!" His body was taken to the Kearney farm and buried beneath a tree. Jesse James and his 16-year reign of terror included the robbing of a dozen banks, seven trains, and five stagecoaches in 11

states. The number of times he killed is anyone's guess. Many still think of him as a folk hero, although the reality is a legacy written in cold blood. As far as Robert Ford, killing Jesse James didn't help the 21year-old the way he thought it would. Right after blowing the outlaw legend's head apart, Ford surrendered to local authorities. He was tried for murder, convicted, and pardoned immediately by Missouri Governor Crittenden. Public sentiment held the Fords as cowards. As for reward money, they may have received as little as $500 apiece, with the governor and others keeping the larger share. Bob Ford toured the West in a show called "How I Killed Jesse James" but was almost lynched in more than one city. Whenever he was low on funds, he'd sell one of several versions of "the gun that shot Jesse James." In Jimtown (present Creede, Colo.), Ford set up a saloon -where he finally met his end. A glory-seeking ex-lawman from Pueblo, Ed O'Kelley, walked into Ford's establishment on June 8, 1892, said, "Hello Bob," and fired two barrels of a shotgun at Ford's throat. California Joe is the storyteller persona of Stevenson Phillips, an actor and singer living in Kernville. You may reach him at sscaljoe@aol.com

Things I Have Noticed...

The great grandchilden test Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist

This past week we had the privilege of having two of our greatgranddaughters visit us. My daughter thought it would be fun for them and said she would bring them up for a Middleworth couple of days. The two are cousins. One of them is 3 and the other is 5. They call me 'Pa Pa' and my wife 'Gee Gee' and they visit us here and we visit them in Bakersfield. This, however, was their first overnighter without their mommies. The adventure started when the 3-year-old got sick coming up the canyon and decorated the back seat of my daughter's SUV with that morning's breakfast. But it was soon forgotten when the kids came boiling out of the car, ran and jumped into Pa Pa's arthritic arms. A big squeeze and munchkin kisses saved the day. Not long after the hello's, the girls were into the toy box. In a flash they had taken over the porch table and had it set up for a tea party-- I was the guest. I had to sit in a tiny chair and sport a napkin, while the 5-year-old poured tea (7Up) and the 3-year-old passed the

crumpets (animal crackers). There was a fight about who was going to sit in Pa Pa's lap during tea. They both did, one on each knee. (Try holding an itty bitty teacup while balancing two wiggly girls. It'll work but it ain't easy!) We did things on both days; took walks, waded in the river, had a picnic at Riverside Park, fed the "fishies" at the hatchery, swung on the "swangs," had big ice cream cones that dripped, didn't take naps, and searched for "special" rocks in our rock driveway. We also fed the ravens, terrorized the hummingbirds, looked into Pa Pa's workshop, and hammered a nail. Both did the same things because the 3-year-old wanted to do anything the 5-yearold did, and vice versa. That night things had quieted down when the 3-year-old realized her mother wasn't there. After a bout of "I want my mommy!" and kisses and being held, she finally gave up. When the visit was over and we waved goodbye, my wife and I looked at each other and understood why it's mostly young folks who have kids. I'm not sure us "oldies" could survive!
