Labor Day is traditionally a day of nonlabor (loafing) here in America. However, the day started as a celebration of labor and how our workers have contributed over the years to building a strong country. Here in the Kern River Valley, Labor Day weekend is more a celebration of a last big burst of welcome summer visitors. And those visitors, as well as locals, will have a lot of activities to choose from this weekend. Besides dunking yourself in the river and other water sports, there are lots of dry activities as well. There will be a giant art show in Circle Park in Kernville all three days of the weekend. This has been put on every year for 44 years by the Kern River Valley Art Association. The show will be open Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 5 p.m., and on Monday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be handcrafted hats, clothes and designer jewelry; unique birdhouses and yard sculptures; Native American arts and crafts; gourds; incense burners; envi-

Here’s your chance! We need your input. Tell us which ones are your favorite puzzles and comics from our Courier Fun & Games pages on pages 16-17. Tell us which ones you love, which ones you hate, and which ones make you want to hurl. We have a form on page 7 of this paper you can use to rate our comics and puzzles. Just rate
each one from one to five, one being worst and five being best. If you really hate it, give it a one – don’t leave it blank. We listen to you. If enough of you don’t like a particular puzzle or comic, it’s outta here. On the other hand, if enough of you really like a particular puzzle or comic, it’s on the protected species list. Let us know.

Things I Have Noticed
...
Dealing with a champion snorer Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist
Motels can be a real adventure, especially when you get a snorer. A few years ago we stopped at a motel in Williams, Ariz. As usual we opted for a second floor room. We do this because of a previous encounter with a practicing dance group directly above us when we stayed in a bottom floor room for a week one night. Never again. Rod We aren't so old that climbing Middleworth up the steps with a couple of suitcases will wear us out. And I've noticed that the quiet is worth the effort. That night we retired early (about 10 p.m.) As we were trying to sleep, there came a sound, a rattling from the wall on my side of the bed. It finally dawned on us that it was coming from the room next door. It was the loudest snoring we had ever heard! It actually physically vibrated the wall. We waited a bit while it kept on. Finally I banged on the wall. The snoring stopped and then restarted. I banged again. It stopped and then came back even louder. What could I do, complain to the management? Sure, but what could
they do? Give us another room after we explained that our neighbor snored too loud? I think not. It was decision time. I got out of bed, went out my front door and got the room number of the next-door snorer. Then I went back inside and dialed my neighbor’s room. The snoring stopped. After a pause, someone sleepily answered. I said, "This is Fire Control. It appears that a forest fire is heading toward town. Do not be alarmed. This is only a warning. Thank you for your cooperation." Then I hung up. My wife said, "I can't believe you did that!" My idea was to get to sleep before my neighbor went from being really wide awake to his sleep mode and hence into his snoring cycle. It worked. I'm sure we were asleep long before my neighbor hit the pillow (if ever). The next morning, as we were carrying our suitcases down to the car, the neighbor from the adjoining room stopped me and asked if I heard about a fire headed our way. "Yep," I said, "We got a call last night, but I guess it passed us by without any evacuation. We sure were lucky!" We walked down the stairs with straight faces and quickly drove away. Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program and coordinator for the Lake Patrol volunteers.

Piute Mountains closed to all wood cutting for rest of season due to fire Sequoia National Forest officials have announced that woodcutting in the Piute Mountains will be closed for the rest of the season. Kern River District Ranger Rick Larson said, "Due to the recent Piute Fire, the area is covered with both dead and live recovering trees. Many of the scorched trees will recover and therefore we need to ensure those are not felled and are allowed that opportunity." Larson continued, "The burned area should be allowed to rest and recover for at least a
year." There also exists a concern for public safety. The unstable trees within the burn area pose a hazard to the public and an increased risk if woodcutters attempt to fall them. Woodcutting is still allowed on the Greenhorns, Breckenridge, Cannell Meadow/Kern Plateau and Hot Springs with a valid 2008 woodcutting permit. For further information or assistance, please call the Lake Isabella Visitor Center at (760) 379-5646 or the Kernville Ranger Station at (760) 376-3781.

The Trail of 100 Giants is a must-see stop in the Kern River Valley area. The “Giants” in the title refers to the Giant Sequoia trees along the trail, an easy walk in a major grove of sequoias north of Kernville. The showplace is in the Giant Sequoia National Monument, set aside forever as the home of the giants.
File photo/Kern River Courier
Must See: The Trail of 100 Giants One of the southernmost Giant Sequoia groves, Long Meadow Grove (also known by some as Redwood Meadow Grove) offers a half-mile interpretive trail, The Trail of 100 Giants, through majestic mature sequoias. It is fairly easy to get to by car on Western Divide Highway (County Route SM107). Accessible by car only in the summer when the road is not closed due to snow. The grove is about 340 acres with sequoias occurring on considerably less acreage, as there are several pockets of mixed conifers without sequoias in them. The grove is primarily on the west side of the road. Directly across the road is Redwood Meadow Campground, where you’ll pay a $5 parking fee. How to Get There: Coming out of the Kern River Valley, take Mountain 99 (County Route SM99 -- also known in the Kernville area as Sierra Way) up the Upper Kern River about 20 miles to County Route SM50 near Johnsondale (no services available there). About 5.5 miles west of Johnsondale is the junction with Western Divide Highway near Parker Pass. Take Western Divide Highway about 2.0 miles to Redwood Meadow Campground and Trail of 100 Giants. Travel time is about 1 to 1-1/2 hrs. from Kernville. The road goes right along the Kern River most of the way. The Western Divide Highway also goes past the popular Dome Rock (a short drive from the highway). You can get a bite to eat at the Ponderosa Store nearby.

Good fishing awaits visitors Jack Bustamante Kern River Courier Columnist
Fishing in the Kern River Valley – it can’t get any better! If you are a local fisherman, you have a good idea where to catch fish 365 days of the year. Whether it be trout, bass, crappie, bluegill or catfish, there is always a fish to catch in the Kern River Valley. How much better can it get? We have fish in Isabella; and if they aren’t biting, we can fish the Kern River, or vice versa. Welcome to fisherman’s paradise! Trout on the river are still biting strong. Kern River fisheries are producing some of the best quality trout I have seen in 15 years. Isabella Lake is still strong on nice catfish. Boulder Gulch and North Fork have been producing lots of 5 to 12 pound cats. Daishia Blair had to help

Celebrity Extra Lopez keeps losing his shirt By Cindy Elavsky
taking over the hosting duties for the syndicated entertainment news show "Extra" from previous host Mark McGrath. Mario's first airdate will be Monday, Sept. 15. *** Q: What happened to Stone Phillips on "Dateline"? I miss him as host. -- Marilyn B., Grandview, Texas A: In July 2007, NBC opted not to renew the newsman's $7 million contract, citing budget cutbacks. It would seem that the parting was amicable, as Stone released this statement about his departure: "It's been a wonderful 15 years. This is a great news division with a bright future. I wish the people of NBC News all the best."
Q: It seems that Mario Lopez is always in the news for personal missteps, or whenever he takes off his shirt. What is he up to lately, professionally speaking? -Deanna Y., Hamilton, Lopez Ohio A: Since finishing in second place in the third season of "Dancing With the Stars," Lopez, 34, has had a rush of professional opportunities come his way. He hosted the Miss Teen USA 2007 pageant, Miss America 2007 and Miss Universe 2007. He hosted MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew," and even polished off his dancing shoes for a run on Broadway as Zach in "A Chorus Line." He had a role on "Nip/Tuck," and starred in the made-for-TV movie "Husband for Hire." The latest professional move for Mario will be

Health Insurance Matters
If we got healthier, we’d save a bunch of money Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist
The race for the White House is a slippery one. The two candidates have very different approaches to a problem which needs to be reconciled. Americans who lack health insurance are estimated to spend about $30 billion out of pocket next year. While studies do estimate there are about 40 million Americans without health insurance, it is also estimated that many of these people are only out of insurance "part time" as they are between jobs. And many more are entitled to existing programs, like California's Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, and Kern County's Healthy Kids. If these programs were fully engaged, the number of uninsureds would be reduced to about 15 million
people, a workable number. I don't have to look farther than my own mailbox each month to recognize that the cost of health insurance is becoming unmanageable. The costs go up more than 10% a year, and in the current economy of this country, more people are looking to the government for relief. The two (pre- Harry Thal sumed) candidates have very different approaches to the solution. Regrettably, their answers are really just playing to the voters to get their support and vote. In reality, little will become of these
proposals, as all the high ideals in the world are only as good as the bank balance to back them up; and there is no money. There is no money in Washington, D.C. and less than none in Sacramento. Mr. Obama would like to see a national program similar to Medicare. This is the same Medicare that recently tried to cut physician's payments by 10%. Just this past week it took an appeals judge to block a 10% reimbursement cut for payment to MediCal providers. Mr. McCain wishes to restore control to the individual. He envisions a tax credit for up to $5,000 per family so people can obtain their own health insurance. Both candidates look to lowering the cost of health care. Keeping in mind that on average, 85 cents of
every health insurance premium dollar goes to paying claims, all the cutting of CEO compensation packages, sales costs, administrative expenses, taxes, etc. will make little difference in the bottom line. America just needs to get healthier. If we can overcome obesity, control cholesterol, blood pressure, remove tobacco, we could reduce the need for acute medical care, and have a happier, healthier life. Harry P. Thal, MA, Certified Senior Advisor, is a licensed insurance broker. He is a member of the Kern Valley Hospital Advisory Board and is President of the Kern Association of Health Underwriters, He may be reached at 760-376-2100, e-mail harrythal@aol.com or visit him on the web at www.harrythal.com

WEEKEND continued from page 1 ronmentally friendly soy candles; and acrylic and water color paintings. Those who are into locally-grown fruits and vegetables might want to drop by the Nuui Cunni Native American Cultural Center in French Gulch (between Lake Isabella and Wofford Heights) on Saturday between 6 a.m. and noon. A Farmer’s Market has been started there. This week’s market is still tentative, since the USDA’s certification of the new market may not yet be complete. However, organizers say it will take place every Saturday morning as soon as the full process is finished. Saturday night there will be a Star Party at Fairview, upriver from Kernville. The Kern River Valley Astronomy Club on occasion ventures out on a short field trip to take advantage of the best Saturday night closest to the New Moon. Saturday is one such night, according to Richard Rowe of Wofford

Heights. “By the time the moon sets, it will be dark enough to show star clusters as well as distant dark and faint objects,” he said. It will be held at the Fairview Helispot on the east side of the road (away from the river) about 12 miles north of Kernville, one mile south of McNally’s Fairview Lodge. Orange traffic cones will indicate the turnout point on Mtn. Hwy 99 (Sierra Way from Kernville). If you plan to attend, please call KRV Astronomy Club president Rich Burdge (daytime 376-1291, evening 376-6290). Also on Saturday, an Open House celebration is planned at Allen’s Plaza, which is the newest shopping center in Wofford Heights. The center contains the Wofford Heights Post Office and Kern County Library, Wofford Heights Cycle, E&J’s Discount Market, Timeless Treasures, Erin’s Haircuts, and, oh yes, the Kern River Courier office. California Joe’s Country Living
Car shopping a necessity again California Joe Kern River Courier Columnist
Went to drive a new Toyota three-door hatchback. This one was fireman red and had an automatic, not a stick. I told the guy I’m looking for a white one with a stick. I’m after a simple hatchback liftup. I know a gal who works in Kernville. She’s had her Toyota for a year. It’s a four-door sedan. No auto- California Joe matic anything, especially no automatic windows. Don’t know if it has cruise control or not. She just wanted a basic car with no extra frills. That’s what got Miz Sue into trouble. She was headed back from Bakersfield in our new little Honda Fit and took the exit ramp off 178 leading up to 155. At the top of the hill the cruise control wouldn’t shut off. So our little Honda was done in, but luckily Miz Sue wasn’t. That’s why I was shopping for a new buggy. Speaking about cars, Sirius satellite radio has the weekly car show Click & Clack. I never miss it if I’m around. Funny stories about how people interact with their automobiles over the years. I tell stories about my dad and I always tell everyone about his Buicks. He loved Buicks. The bigger the better. I especially love
telling about the time he drove up to his bank in his shiny new red Buick convertible and asked for a lot of money to buy new merchandise for his junkyard business. He got the loan when he took the banker outside and showed him his new car. While I’m in a remembering mood, let me mention the man who first introduced me to the automobile. It was my Grandfather Stevenson, a tall, thin dour German fellow who decided my dad needed his 1933 green Model A. Many was the night I pushed that car out of the driveway and into the street after my dad fell asleep in his living room chair with a newspaper over his face. I still remember my first car. It was a Desoto convertible. Later I gave it to my older sister. She drove it for three months and then it died. Today my sister is in an assisted living center in Houston. When I go see her she always remembers when we were kids and I gave her my first car. Sometimes I think I should have been a Greyhound bus driver. Or a long distance truck driver. Some kind of a driver anyway. I’m a great driver. Sue thinks not. She says I’m not that good a driver because I won’t even signal turns when I should. Well, she ought to know! California Joe is the storyteller persona of Stevenson Phillips, an actor and singer living in Kernville. You may reach him at sscaljoe@aol.com

Talking About Real Estate Step into investing With less-than-spectacular stock market performance and bank deposit interest rates at disappointing levels, you may have been reading lately about how many investors are turning to real estate. If you don’t regard yourself as a “big time” investor, but have some interest in how Matt Freeman it all works, consider some basic ways to get it all started. The strategy is simple – try to buy low and sell (or rent) high. Ideally, someone else’s payments will finance your investment (mortgage). A good place to begin looking is
for foreclosures – properties usually bought at auction for less than market value. If you can rent it for more than the mortgage payment, you’re in the black. Just be very careful not to buy a home that will require more investment in improvements than you can recover. On the flip side, you may be able to purchase a “fixer-upper” that needs serious repairs (not just paint and new windows.) Don’t balk at the cost of repairs, because you’ll often find these properties at bargain-basement prices. Again, be certain that you negotiate the lowest price and can afford the repairs to turn a profit from the sale or rent. Matt Freeman is a Realtor with Freeman’s Lakeside Realty (760) 379-5915 or cell 223-0880. His column is not intended to replace legal advice.

Voices of Faith
Try for pride and greatness Clarence Semonious Pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Fellowship
“Attempt something so great for God that it’s doomed to fail unless God be in it.” As close as I am able to determine, the author is Mr. Anonymous Piece. Anonymous has produced more than enough material to fill a book. I am particularly attracted to this advice because it is sound, Biblical counsel with the added benefit of humor. Romans 11:36 is the reason I see humor – “For from [God] and through [God] and to [God] are all things. To [God] be glory forever.” Semonious The ‘something’ to which my thoughts meandered is the manifestation of selfishness within mankind’s participation with God’s purpose on earth. We can learn about mankind from the books of Psalms and Proverbs. “In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor; let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised. For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the LORD. In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him; all his thoughts are, ‘There is no God.’” “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.” Proverbs 11:2. “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18. Those who are sure these words are only for the “bad” people would be well advised to consider what Paul wrote concerning both the
Jewish and the Christian readers. He summed up his comments this way: “God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.” Romans 11:32. That includes me; where do you fit? Mankind made the decision to reject God and turned to the only person in the garden who was not God or mankind. See where he fits on the selfishpride scale. “How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’” Isaiah 14:1214. Earthly rulers followed suit then as today. Isaiah was addressing the ancient Babylonians when he wrote in chapter 47, verse 8, “…lover of pleasures, who sit securely, who say in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one besides me…’”.This is not the first year I’ve followed the two partys’ conventions. I have experienced astonishment, despair and confusion. Life is, after all, “…from [God] and through [God] and to [God] are all things. To [God] be glory forever.” It may be time now to see the humor in mankind’s inability to fix the world. Attempt something so great for God that it’s doomed to fail unless God be in it. Learn humility. Make a conscious decision to bless others. It cannot be done pridefully.

Continued from last week: The Anticlinal trap is the most common trap. It is a hill under the surface, formed primarily by compressional forces. They are also defined as Ron Bolyard folds that are concave downward. In this trapping configuration, the trap is at the apex of the beds at the top of the subsurface hill. Commonly, the gas and fluids will migrate through porous conduits to the highest points on that structure, both vertically across the beds and horizontally through the beds. If the
conduit is surrounded by impermeable beds (shales) that prevent further migrating, the fluids and gases become trapped and are unable to move further. Always keep in mind that the fluids and gasses are always attempting to reach the highest possible structural positions. As shown, water is commonly the fluid that drives the oil and gas to the highest point in the permeable sandstone. They then separate into distinct zones with the gas on top and the water on the bottom with the oil sandwiched in between. This is because of their relative densities. Since water is heavier that oil, oil “floats” on water. Gas, being the lightest, will seek the highest point. Until Next Week ..... Ron Bolyard is a retired geologist and has developed an “acute interest” in the geology of the southern Sierra Nevada since he moved here in 1999.
