Black bear beware
Michael Batelaan/Kern River Courier
June Washburn looks out through damaged screened window that bear entered after foraging through outside trash.
Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier
Sometime between Tuesday and Friday morning last week, June Washburn had a visitor in her Kernville home near Silver
Mine Street and Mountain Drive. A bear entered her home through a porch screen after having rummaged through her trash. Luckily, Mrs. Washburn was not there to meet the bear in person. According to Tahoe Wild Bears .Org,
the only species of bears in California and Nevada are black bears. However, they do range in color from blonde to black, with cinnamon brown being the most common color in both states. Black bears normally avoid humans. If encountered, always leave them an escape route. Bears that are accustomed to people can become too bold and lose their fear of humans. To avoid this behavior, do not let bears become use to human sources of food. Tahoe Wild Bears .Org also has some suggestions for bear-proofing your home. June Washburn wants everyone to follow these suggestions. Bears are attracted to anything that is edible or that they associate with food. Take precautions by implementing the following ideas: 1. Garbage problems can be solved with the purchase and correct use of a bearproof garbage container. Save money by sharing one with a neighbor. 2. Wait to put trash out until collection day. 3. Don't leave trash, groceries, or animal feed in your car. 4. Keep garbage cans clean and deodorize them with bleach or ammonia. 5. Harvest fruit off trees as soon as it is ripe, and promptly collect fruit that falls. 6. Only provide bird feeders outside during November through March and always hang feeders so they are inaccessible to bears. 7. Keep barbecue grills clean. 8. Keep pets inside. 9. Securely block access to potential hibernation sites such as crawl spaces under decks and buildings. 10. Don't leave any scented products outside, even non-food items such as suntan lotion, insect repellant, soap or candles. 11. Keep doors and windows closed and locked. Scents can lure bears inside.
Historic lookout lost to fire U.S. Forest Special to the Courier
The Needles Fire Lookout Tower, located on the Western Divide Ranger District within the Giant Sequoia National Monument on the Sequoia National Forest was destroyed in a structure fire Thursday, July 28. "This is a tragic loss to the District," stated District Ranger Priscilla Summers. "I'm relieved the person staffing the lookout tower was able to safely evacuate the tower before it burned." The cause of the fire is under investigation, however it was determined to be a structure fire and not in any way related to the Lion Wildland Fire currently burning in the Golden Trout Wilderness. Firefighters are ensuring the safety of visitors by closing Forest Road 21S05 and trail 32E22 that lead to Needles Lookout, and closure of the area surrounding the rock formation where the lookout was perched. The closure area includes the formation popular for rock climbers known as "The Magician" and will remain closed until the wildland fire resulting from the burning debris has been contained and the area safe for visitors. The lookout tower was constructed in
1937-38 by the Civilian Conservation Corps atop the rock formation at 8,245 feet. A Forest Service employee, stationed in the tower, was responsible for detecting fires and relaying radio messages to a dispatcher, who in turn sent firefighters and support equipment to extinguish the reported fire. The tower was utilized as this employee's office as well as their home for the summer months while the lookout was on duty. Needles overlooked the Kern River Drainage, Mt. Whitney, Olancha Peak, Farewell Gap, and Dome Rock. The tower was the primary communication line for persons in the backcountry where cell phones do not work. The Needles Lookout Tower was one of the most popular places to visit on the Western Divide Ranger District. "The loss of this historic landmark is significant." stated Summers. "My immediate concern is for the safety of firefighters who are working to contain the Lion Wildland Fire in the Golden Trout Wilderness who have now lost one of their main lines of communication." More information will be sent out as soon as it's available regarding the cause of the fire, availability of the rock formation for visitors, and future plans.

The Kern River Preserve headquarters is the site for the annual Hummingbird Celebration Saturday August 6, 2011 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The number of hummingbirds may be down again this year due to a late cold spring, but spirits are flying high for this years event. Learn about hummingbirds as the numbers rebound in time for the festival. Many staff and volunteers have put together this free event with its many workshops. The amazing corps of volunteers are to thank for filling the feeders every day: Birdie Foster, Gordon & Chris Hancock, Maria Garcia, Martine Metzenheim, Bob Showers, Cloe Kennedy, Darrell Barnes and Marya Miller, and Gerry Tessman. Hummingbird numbers increase steadily at the Kern River Preserve hummingbird feeders from June until late-August. Black-chinned Hummingbird numbers decline throughout August. Allen's and Rufous numbers peak the third week of August. Six hummingbird species are possible at the Kern River Preserve feeders in July, August, & early September with over one thousand hummingbirds present some days: Black-chinned (numbers decrease from July through early September), Anna's, Costa's (low numbers), Calliope (rarely), Rufous (peak numbers in late August & early September), and Allen's (virtually impossible to separate from

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You sometimes go to extremes to prove a point. But this time, you won't have to. Supporters are ready, falling over themselves to help you make your case. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Venus might be your ruling planet, but Mars is in the picture as well. So don't be surprised if your romantic relationships are a bit rocky at this time. But they'll soon smooth over. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Geminis might rush into romance and risk being wrong about someone rather than be left with no one. But this is one time when it's wiser to be wary of where your heart takes you. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) With all (or most) of those pesky problems behind you, take time for your family and friends. Travel aspects are favored, with long-distance journeys high on the list. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might have started to question the wisdom of being open with someone you hoped you could trust. But be assured you won't be disappointed. You'll soon hear good news. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You have a reputation for honesty and integrity, and that will help turn around a situation that was not only disappointing but also quite unfair. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A happy
event creates a closer tie with a family member who seemed hopelessly estranged. Positive aspects also dominate in important career matters. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your ruling planet, Pluto, helps you adjust to change. So, stop putting off that long-delayed move, and make it with the assurance that you're doing the right thing. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You have a wonderful capacity to learn quickly and well. This will help you when you are faced with an opportunity to move on to a new path in life. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Good news: You suddenly find that you're not facing that new challenge alone. You now have someone at your side, ready to offer whatever support you might need. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your versatility -- which is just one of those aspects of yourself that make you so special -- helps you adapt to the challenges of a new and exciting opportunity. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your sensitive nature picks up on the needs of others. But what about your desires? You need to take more time to assess what your goals are and, if necessary, redirect them. BORN THIS WEEK: You give your trust openly and easily. People find you easy to be with and enjoy your wit, your good sense, and your capacity to love and be loved. © 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

KERN VALLEY CANYON CONNECTION
A few weeks ago I decided to again plant tomatoes -- even after remembering about last year's bumper crop which I could not give more than half of away. I'd tried everything, even leaving a bag of them on strangers' porchMiddleworth es, ringing the doorbell and scampering into the darkness. (You have to be careful when you do that; people have and use shotguns up here.) We canned tomatoes, made tomato paste, made salsa, fried them, stewed them, ate scads of tomato and lettuce sandwiches and still they kept growing. My big mistake was buying eight plants (well, they were very small) and guessing on what the per acre bushel count would be. They grew like weeds and eventually covered the steps to my garage. We lost friends because of our insistence in giving them several bags of the red fruit. After the harvest was over and the last tomato was gone I swore I would never plant again. Well, time is a great healer and when the season rolled around this year, I felt that if I kept tomato plants to a minimum I could grow enough

for us and a few of the friends we had left. And so I did. I went to a local nursery and picked four sturdy looking plants, which I estimated would give less than half of what I grew last year. I planted them and they began to grow. And grow, and grow. I started to panic -- would this year be a repeat of last year's fiasco? If the size of the growing plants (huge) had anything to do with the number of tomatoes I was going to have, I was prepared to leave the Valley. Well, I need not have worried. The plants were gigantic but only a few blossoms are visible. Now I am worrying that I will have but a puny few for just the family. To date, the bushes are over 5 feet high and growing. I have added fertilizer, kept them watered, played music from an iPod and have even talked to them. But my tomato crop is a bust. Nearby neighbors are breathing sighs of relief as it has become apparent that I will not be leaving midnight offerings at their doorsteps. Peace has descended into the neighborhood and folks are once again talking to us. Although, as I am writing this I have noticed a bunch of new blossoms. Do you suppose...?

Kenneth Earl Bates August 2, 1936 - July 30, 2011 Kenny was born in Beaver, Pennsylvania on August 2, 1936. He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years Judy, 3 Sons Michael (Debra) Bates, Daniel A. Bates, Matthew (Windy) Bates, 1 Daughter Theresa M. Hegner and 5 Grandchildren Stephen M. Bates, Jessica M. Bates, Thomas G. Hegner, Amanda R. Hutton and Mary E. Hutton, 1 Sister Eunice (Gene) McKenna, and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter Colleen Bates Hutton on June 1, 2011, his parents Earl and Laura Bates, and brothers Francis and Earl Bates Jr. Kenny came to the Valley in June 1988 when he married Judy. He was proud of many things in his life; his time serving his country as a United States Marine, "Truly once a Marine, always a Marine," his accomplishments in the culinary field as an Executive Chef, working at Camp Owens, sharing with the boys some of his skills and how many truly good ways to go in life, spoiling the other counselors with his fabulous Sunday morning omelet breakfasts, his time cooking and serving fantastic meals at the Elks Lodge and of course, the many wonderful hours spent preparing meals at the VFW and the fellowship he had with the members and families. He enjoyed traveling with Judy and the groups she escorted all around the world. Their trips to visit family and friends gave him many wonderful memories. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church in Wofford Heights and services are pending. "Day is done, gone the sun, from the lake, from the hill, from the sky. All is well, safely rest, God is nigh. Thanks and praise, for our days, neath the sun, neath the stars, neath the sky. AS we go, this we know. God is nigh." ‘Semper Fi’

IRS Increases 2011 HSA Limits Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist
Many Americans have chosen to purchase "High Deductible Health Insurance Plans" (HDHP) in an effort to keep their monthly premium costs to a minimum. These plans are unique in that they do not cover any medical or prescription costs until the deductible has been satisfied. Once the deductible has been met, then the insurance plan pays a Harry Thal percentage of the bills ranging from about 70% all the way up to covering 100% of allowable charges when using participating physicians. The deductibles and out of pocket maximums the insurance companies may charge are regulated by the IRS and vary depending on the plan purchased as well as the insurance company offering the plans. After working a lifetime, it is sad to see that one major medical issue, either accident or natural, can wipe out a lifetime of retirement savings or the prospects of paying for a higher education. To encourage these types of financial vehicles, the Federal government has a law in which people can set aside in a separate bank savings account, monies to assist in meeting the "high" deductible of these type policies. They are known as "Health Savings Accounts" or "HSA" for short. Each insurance company typically

has a bank they are affiliated with to facilitate the account, or the consumer may establish an HSA account with any other financial institution offering these accounts. Also, the interest paid on the accounts is very low and many banks do charge a small maintenance fee. On the positive side, each HSA deposit made into the account is treated as a medical expense by the IRS, making the contributions to your savings account tax deductible. Each year the IRS establishes a maximum contribution allowed to be placed into these accounts. Many high income wage earners will maximize these as an additional way to tuck away dollars from taxation. The Internal Revenue Service has just announced the HSA Limit 2012 inflation adjusted deduction limitations for annual contributions made to an HSA. The notice makes changes to: Annual contribution limitations for single and family coverage; and changes for maximum out-of-pocket employee expense for single and family coverage under a high deductible health plan. For individual and families with ever tightening budgets, the HSA is a great way to lower the monthly premiums, while still protecting yourself from a catastrophic medical issue. Harry P. California Joe’s Storytelling Corner
Legend James Beckworth California Joe Kern River Courier Columnist
By the time the first covered wagons rolled West, the legend of black mountain man James Beckwourth was already larger than life. Beckwourth was the son of American Revolutionary War veteran Sir Jennings Beckwith and a mulatto slave. Around 1810, Sir Beckwith moved his family and slaves to Louisiana Territory, near St. Louis. In 1812 James was apprenticed to a blacksmith, but around 1817, he ran away to become a professional hunter. In 1822, he joined a popular rush to the Fever River lead mines. After amassing a fortune of $700 in 18 months, he went home. In the summer of 1824, he saw the famous ad placed by General William Ashley, and his life was permanently changed. Beckwourth was hired to perform a variety of tasks for the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, including blacksmith and assistant to Ashley. At the rendezvous of 1828, trapper Caleb Greenwood played a practical joke. He told Crow Chief Big Bowl that Jim was his missing child who had been stolen by the Cheyennes and raised by the whites. lost son appeared, searching for a distinguishing mark. Beckwourth stood motionless as the woman spotted a mole over his left eye, and whooped with delight. Welcomed into the family with all honors, the rugged mountain man received clothes and his choice of three beautiful sisters for a bride. For six years, Jim Beckwourth was a Crow living in the Montana lands they called Absaroka, all the while drawing checks from the American Fur Co. He took seven wives during that time and rose in the ranks of the tribe to become a war chief. John C. Fremont wrote about encountering Beckwourth in 1842. In 1849, during the Mexican War, Beckwourth carried messages for Gen. Stephen Kearny. Beckwourth joined the Crow for a hunting party in 1866. He never returned. Some accounts say he simply became ill; others suggest he probably died of food poisoning after a feast of dog. His body was placed in a tree. His spirit was remembered as that of a great warrior.
