Kernville bike park to have grand opening Richard Rowe Special to the Courier
Michael Batelaan/Kern River Courier
This sign was displayed at the Veterans/Senior Center in Lake Isabella last week to show the valley’s appreciation for the firefighters who fought the recent Bull Fire in Riverkern. Fire authorities were having meetings there to present information about the fire to the public. UPDATE: campgrounds in the area were not damaged and were scheduled to be reopened Aug. 5.
The brand new communitybuilt Kernville Bike Park (next to the rodeo grounds) will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, Aug. 21 from 4pm until dark. There will be a special Double Point Race at 5:30pm (race signups are from 4-5pm). Also, there will be a barbecue at 6pm (bring items to share) and the snack bar will be open. Proceeds from the food and drink sales will help complete remaining KV Bike Park features. Come check out and enjoy our new venue of riding, such as a Mountain Bike Skills course, Pump Track, Dirt Jumps, Mountain Bike Trials Course, and of course, California's newest NBL sanctioned BMX track. It's all about the fun! To race, kids must be a member of the world's largest nonprofit BMX racing organization, the National Bike League (www.nbl.org). The NBL offers exciting local, state, regional and national programs, each with a new opportunity to win exciting
awards such as trophies, plaques, number plates, clothing, scholarships and more. Bike Park secretary Marcie Leathers will be around the valley for NBL sign-ups: • Tues. Aug. 10 - Lake Isabella library noon to 3pm • Wed. Aug. 11 - Wofford Heights - Chatterbox Cafe 11 am- 1pm • Wed. Aug. 11 - Kernville Bionicon - 2 - 4pm • Thurs. Aug. 12- South Fork Middle School 11am - 1pm • Fri. Aug. 13 - Mt Mesa bowling alley 5 - 7pm Membership information is listed at www.nbl.org. Low-income scholarships may be available (sponsors are being sought). A one-year NBL membership is free for veterans and foster kids, and for families making under $11,000 a year (bring birth certificate and proof of income/status). Getting started in BMX is easy and the NBL sanctions more than 160 tracks across the country. Most 20" and 24" wheel BMX bicycles can be used for

Here’s how to stay cooler in summer heat waves Kern River Courier
Okay, it’s hot. The sweat is pouring off your face and you’re looking for some ways to bring the temperature – and maybe your electricity costs – down. Southern California Edison has some tips for you. “There are so many free and low-cost ways to stay cool and comfortable this summer while keeping electricity costs in check,” said Gene Rodrigues, SCE’s director of Customer Energy Efficiency and Solar. Here are three steps customers can take immediately to get started:
1. Take an energy efficiency survey. The survey provides customized results for your unique situation. Visit www.sce.com/survey for homes and www.sce.com/bizsurvey forbusinesses. 2. Look for SCE’s rebates and incentives. Go to www.sce.com/save for residences and www.sce.com/business for businesses. 3. Make the switch now to CFLs. You might already have a stock of them, waiting for the regular bulbs to burn out before you replace them. This delays the tremendous savings the CFLs provide. Not only are CFLs up to 75 percent more efficient, but they emit much less heat, reduc-
ing the need for air conditioning. Other ways to keep power usage down this summer include drawing drapes to keep sunlight out; gradually cutting your air conditioning usage as you become acclimated to 78 degrees or so; shutting off vents and doors to unoccupied areas to direct cool air only to the rooms you're mainly using; using a microwave or barbecue for cooking instead of the stove; and running a fan often provides just enough circulation to make the air feel up to 5% cooler. Customers can find more energy-saving solutions at www.sce.com/tips or by calling SCE at 1(800) 655-4555.
Make plan for your pets in case of fire Mike Devich Kern River Courier
Nobody ever wants a disaster to happen. But once in a while, some of us have to cope with them. So do our pets. The recent Bull Fire in Riverkern reminded us all that we should have a disaster plan in place in case we need to get out in a hurry. Kern County Animal Control provides a checklist for this. First, they say that all pets should be wearing up-to-date IDs at all times. Include your name and phone number, and if possible the name and number of a friend or relative outside
your immediate area. This helps ensure that if you pet is lost, there is a number on the tag that will be answered even if you are out of your home. Second, have an emergency pack ready for your pet that you can grab when you go. Make sure you take a leash. Also keep a carrier handy. Your pet may have to stay in the carrier for hours at a time while you have taken shelter away from home. Remember a blanket. You’ll need food and water for at least three days for each pet, bowls, cat litter and litter box, and a manual can opener. Paper towels and grooming items might also be useful.

Things I Have Noticed...
Some days not any fun Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist
I knew the day wasn't going to go right when I woke up and noticed my clock/radio was on the floor. That’s where I had pushed it off in my sleep. It usually sits on the nightstand, close to the edge. It was now broken and no longer Middleworth worked. Next I went outside to get the paper. As I passed by my large Bird of Paradise bush I was attacked by one of its seed-flinging pods and was struck twice in the face. If you have a Bird of Paradise bush, you know that the pods dry on the bush, suddenly pop open and hurl the seeds with considerable force. I got one in the eye and another in the ear, and it smarted. Later that morning I decided to check my tomato plants. As I looked I saw an inviting splash of red, deep inside the bush. I reached in and grabbed the tomato, which was red and very ripe ... and would have been okay if I had picked it a week ago. But by now it was a squishy red goopy mess, and of course I got it all over me, all over my T-shirt and my sandals. Great!
L
At this point I realized this was not going to be a good day. And I was right, as the day progressed. After washing my hands and changing my shirt, I watched my lawn sprinklers come on. I noticed that one wasn't sprinkling. It needed adjustment. I could have turned the water off to fix it, but I figured all it needed was a slight turn of a screwdriver and I could do that without getting wet. Wrong! As I put the screwdriver into the adjustment screw the sprinkler, which was actually broken, popped into the air, bonking me on the beezer and soaking me thoroughly. As I got the tools from the shed, I noticed that a big bird had anointed my shiny red truck. I decided to back the truck out of the carport to wash it. The battery was dead! Later that day, I got bit by an ant, mashed my finger with a hammer and lost my car keys in a sand pile. (Don't ask me how!) I'm only allowed 400 words in this column to vent my frustrations and to report on the rest of my day. Just so you know, it didn't get any better. Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.

Stocking again brings fish Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier columnist
Thank goodness the Bull Fire is over. The west side of the upper Kern took a pretty good licking up to Camp 3 and a little beyond. The good news is that the east side of the upper river is in very good shape. The fire seldom crossed Mike Mencarini the river’s edge. The firefighters did an awesome job in containing the fire. The hatchery was in peril but was spared, as we opened our gates for those needing a break. So here is the best news. After management obtained access, we headed upriver with another load of nicesized trout, most in the half to 3/4 pound range. We saw no places other than the fee-type campgrounds closed. Should
you need camping, I suggest calling the Forest Service in Kernville. As of this writing most campgrounds around the fire had their gates closed. (Ed. As of Thursday these should have now reopened.) So now the upper and lower river have been stocked with lots of hungry catchable trout. As far as the fish rescue in the flume goes, it was mostly uneventful, with catfish and carp heading the bill. A great thanks should go to Edison for their efforts to return those fish, whatever species they may be, to the lake. Edison spends a great deal of money and resources to make these fish rescues possible. Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and a volunteer at the Kern River Fish Hatchery. For questions or comments you can reach himr through the Kern River Courier, office@kernrivercourier.com.

‘Boston Legal’ source of intrigue
Previews of new DVDs by DNA Smith Released the week of Aug. 16: PICK OF THE WEEK "Temple Grandin" (Unrated) -"Temple Grandin" is one of those little gems of a film that most people haven't heard of or seen - but should. Unless you have HBO, you've probably never heard of this delightful biopic. Claire Danes stars as Temple Grandin, a woman born in 1947 with classic autism, one of the most severe forms of the affliction. At the time, autism was diagnosed as a type of schizophrenia and mothers were blamed for the child's condition, often being accused of being too cold and unfeeling toward the child. Claire Danes When Temple is finally properly diagnosed with autism, her mother (Julia Ormond) rejects the doctor's suggestion to institutionalize the girl and instead devotes her energies to raising Temple to live a normal, fulfilling life. And Temple does just that. She not only attends university, eventually earning a Ph.D, she also becomes the foremost designer of humane slaughterhouses. "Temple Grandin" is a betterthan-average biopic, mostly because it treats the subject with gentle humor and respect, and doesn't fall into the trap of sentimentality or hagiography. Claire Danes' performance is brilliant, and she definitely deserves an Emmy. If after watching the film, you want to learn more about Temple Grandin, I strongly recommend renting a copy of Errol Morris' documentary series "First Person." One of the episodes is devoted to Temple, and she tells her story in her own words as to
how her autism gave her a unique insight and empathy toward cows, and how it gave her the ability to design the slaughterhouses so humanely and efficiently. DOG OF THE WEEK "Furry Vengeance" (PG) -Sometimes I imagine that Brendan Fraser's idea of a perfect evening is having someone jangle a set of car keys just out of his reach whilst chiming, "Oooo! Shiny-Shiny!" It's the only way I can justify in my mind why he makes such stupid movie choices. "Furry Vengeance" is about a guy (Fraser) who takes a job overseeing the development of a subdivision in Oregon. The wee woodland creatures aren't too happy about having their forest mowed down, so they band together and find ways to attack Brendan Fraser's crotch. By the end of the film, Fraser's character learns Important Lessons About Family and The Environment. You, however, will want to hunt Fraser's crotch down and finish the job. Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A previous misunderstanding continues to taint the atmosphere to some extent in the early part of the week. But cooler heads prevail, and the situation eases by week's end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While the artistic aspect of the Divine Bovine is well-served this week, that practical side is also getting the sort of recognition that could lead to a well-deserved opportunity. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) With home-related matters taking on more importance this week, now could be the time to make some long-deferred purchases. But shop carefully. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Congratulations. While that family problem might still rankle, it should be easing thanks to your efforts to calm the waters. Also, a workplace situation seems to be moving in your favor. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat's energy levels should be rather high these days, and you might do well to tackle any tasks that still need doing. This will clear the way for those upcoming projects. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone's criticism might not be as negative as you perceive. Actually, it could be helpful. Discuss the matter with your critic. You both could learn something valuable. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business matter could cause some friction among your col-

leagues. But once again, that logical mind of yours comes to the rescue. And the sooner it does, the better! SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) There might still be some heated temper flare-ups out there. But your sensible self should advise you to stay out of these situations until things cool down and calm is restored. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Changing your mind could be the right thing to do if you can't resolve your doubts. Discuss the matter with someone whose advice you trust. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Sea Goat's merrier side dominates this week, and this means that, despite your usual busy schedule, you'll be able to squeeze in parties and all sorts of fabulous fun times. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An educational opportunity could lead to something other than what you had planned. But keep an open mind, and before you decide to turn it down, check it out. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The Piscean wit and wisdom helps you work through a situation that might have been accidentally or even deliberately obscured. What you unravel could prove to be very revealing. BORN THIS WEEK: Loyalty is important to you. You demand it, but you also give it generously and lovingly. ) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

California Joe’s Storytelling Corner
Holliday and Earp legends California Joe Kern River Courier Columnist
Doc Holliday was born in Griffin, Ga. in 1852. By 1872, fully qualified, he set up a dental practice in Atlanta. But California Joe his coughing fits took him southward to Dallas. He hung out at the faro tables there. In Dallas he rapidly acquired a certain wizardry with both revolver and derringer plus an ability to handle a bowie knife, which led to him becoming a full time faro dealer. In September 1876, having moved to Ft. Griffin, Texas, he moved in with Big-Nose Kate. By 1879, Doc had tried his hand again as a dentist in Las Vegas, New Mexico. But it didn’t last long and soon Doc had bought himself a saloon. There he had a Main Street shootout with a hard case named Mike Gordon. He was acquitted and moved to Tombstone, Ariz. where his friends the Earp brothers lived. He quickly became caught up in the local situation there. Holliday had a fight with a loud, boastful hombre named Ike Clanton. Clanton and his friends eventually went up against Holliday and his friends the Earps. The inquest cleared Holliday yet again, and the Earps too, of any
Water Wells Pumps
wrongdoing. The gunfight was at the OK Corral, and it became a legend. But it sure wasn’t OK for the Earps. First Virgil Earp was ambushed and maimed. Then Morgan Earp was ambushed and murdered. Wyatt Earp, Warren Earp and Holliday took off for California with the wounded Virgil. And then as they were being chased, the vendetta began. Nobody knows for sure what happened, but a lot of Ike Clanton’s friends got killed. But it is known that Doc and Wyatt Earp ended up in Colorado. They had a parting of the ways soon thereafter. Doc Holliday had won a lot of battles, but he must have known he was losing the main one. In May, 1887 he entered a sanitorium in Glenwood Springs, Colo. He survived for six months, dying on Nov. 8, shortly after he downed a toothglass full of whiskey. Wyatt Earp himself lived a lot longer, surviving all the way to 1929. For years only a few close friends knew where his grave was. But on the night of July 6, 1957 thieves stole the headstone from the plot – all 560 pounds of it. So now we know where Earp is interred. You see, the publicity had turned the Hills of Eternity Park in Coloma, Calif. into a western buff’s paradise overnight. California Joe is the storyteller persona of Stevenson Phillips, an actor and singer living in Kernville. You may reach him at sscaljoe@aol.com.

Voices of Faith
Be not the bearer of bad Clarence Semonious, pastor Prince of Peace Lutheran Fellowship, Kernville
I often feel as if I want to point out the trouble I see approaching. The accumulated years have taught me not to try such foolishness anywhere. Uninvited ideas may be met with Semonious politeness or hostility, but the dangerous, inner emotional response is described by Queen Esther, “All the king's servants and the people of the king's provinces know that if any man or woman goes to the king inside the inner court without being called, there is but one law--to be put to death, except the one to whom the king holds out the golden scepter so that he may live.” Esther 4:11. Let me introduce you to the Preacher. “Besides being wise, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge, weighing and studying and arranging many proverbs with great care.” Ecclesiastes 12:9. “The Preacher sought to find words of delight, and uprightly he wrote words of truth.” Ecclesiastes 12:10. Put another way, the preacher worked to find words so welcome that even the king would
extend the golden scepter. Now there is a bright idea. Work to express thoughts that are seen by the hearer as relevant. “In the thought of, one who is at ease there is contempt for misfortune; it is ready for those whose feet slip.” Job 12:5. This is not the modern way of speaking, but we can understand that whenever one who has a high position is in danger of falling from that status, he is regarded as becoming as useless as a burned out light bulb, contemptuously trashed. Learning from the Preacher, can lead one to enlightenment; “…speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. Ephesians 4:15-16. This does take work since the dark side of love would be called spin. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35.

Tons of medical bills not fun When Scott didn't feel right, he knew something was really wrong, and went to the hospital emergency room right away. He was having a heart attack. After he was home, the hospital, the emergency room physician, his own physician, a surgeon, anesthesiologist, radiologist and several sent Harry Thal their paperwork. The mail was overwhelming. Scott was in no condition to deal with the mail, and basically set all of it aside. He was still home from work, taking medication with names he couldn't pronounce and feeling that there was no relief in sight. In an act of desperation, Scott called me and asked for advice, as he really didn't understand what was going on, and what the process was. As he lives in Orange County, I suggested he mail me the stuff he had accumulated and I would review and make recommendations. One of those extra large Priority Mail envelopes arrived a few days later, weighing in at almost 5 pounds. He had a lot of bills. In all honesty, it sat on my desk for almost a week before intimidated me got up the nerve to tackle it. When faced with this kind of task,

I first sought out the mail by types. Most were Explanations of Benefits (EOB's) from the insurance company. Then I sorted the remaining mail by the senders; mostly doctors and labs, and a few collection agencies. Once this sort was done, I opened the mail. Many were statements, typically duplicates of the prior month's. These I put in date order and stapled together, with the latest on top. If there was a collection agency notice for the bill, I added this to the bottom of the stack and stapled again. Next comes the EOB's. His Blue Cross EOB statements had as many as two bills per page, and occasionally it was for two different providers. The next step was to match the bills to the EOB's. And so on. Well, Scott's paperwork is back in the mail. I discarded the notices of language preference which was in every one of the EOB envelopes, and discarded much of the other "stuffers" which came in every mailing. Only about two pounds were returned, and Scott can now sit, write some checks, and put this all behind him. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker.
