Here’ an idea that will make your Christmas shopping a lot easier. If that special person in your life is an angler, make it easy for him or her and purchase their 2012 fishing license for them. Many stores in the Valley sell fishing licenses, but you can also buy them online now. Just go to www.dfg.ca.gov/On lineSales. Remember, you’ll need the person’s date of birth, address, phone number and physical description when you buy the license. But if you don’t have all of that required information, you can also purchase a gift license voucher online that the recipient can exchange for their fishing license. A California sport fishing license offers a full year of more

This Mule Deer spotted just above Riverkern is just one of many that are near or crossing the roadways this time of year. By being aware of the risks and following precautionary measures, you can reduce the likelihood of colliding with a deer. Deer collisions are more likely to occur in the early morning or evening hours. In fact, 50 percent of deer related insurance claims occur between 5 p.m. and midnight, and another 20 percent of claims occur between 5 and 8 a.m. according to www.auto.erieinsurance.com .

Kevin Elliott Special to the Courier

My first two months as the new Forest Supervisor of the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument have been amazing. I asked for this job because I was ready and anxious for a new set of challenges in land stewardship, and greater complexity. It is clear that this job will meet that expectation. In 2012, we will complete a collaboratively developed Monument Management Plan at the Giant Sequoia National Monument. This Plan will have an ecological restoration theme to counteract the effects of fire suppression and logging. It will also provide for visitor enjoyment and understanding in ways to protect the very objects President Obama so keenly identified needing protection. I am also struck by the tremendous opportunities that abound outside the Monument: developed and dispersed recreation; wildlife and fish habitat restoration; restoring the effects of fire suppression; the identification, protection, and interpretation of our cultural resources; and the need to maintain a viable vegetation management program as a tool for ecological restoration. When I think about decisions we make in the short or long term, I frame my thinking around three elements. First and foremost, is the natural resource itself. I want to make sure we are making a difference on the ground. Second is connecting with the employees that accomplish the very things that make the Sequoia the successful Forest it is. And third, the reason we exist is you, the very people who so passionately care about and use this tremendous resource. The Sequoia has a reputation for being responsive to people’s needs and providing for multiple-uses in a manner that demonstrates good land stewardship.

Natural re s o u rc e management is not without controversy. There are many public interests, and often they are in conflict with each other. Not everyone likes what we are doing and that is okay. I welcome folks to challenge us to do a good job, to implement our plans, Kevin Elliott, Forest Supervisor and meet people’s needs in a sustainable fashion. Some will continue to disagree with our mission as a multiple-use agency. Debate is healthy and an integral part of being a democracy. I am committed to the wise use and careful management of the forest for the use and benefit of present and future generations. I am committed to seeing us complete the Monument Plan. I am committed to seeing us maintain a viable vegetation management program. I look forward to working with the people who use and love the forest. Our challenge and responsibility as land stewards is to involve more people, incorporate science, and make decisions that sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of our natural resources. Hence, I encourage those who have been involved in the Sequoia to continue their involvement. I also invite those who have not been involved to become part of the process, and share your voice.

paper chain to be placed on the tree. Then, reaching as high as I could, I helped hang the glass ornaments and lots of tinfoil icicles. About then, Dodda would hoist me high in the air and let me put the angel on the very top of the tree. One year I received a present of a toy train that had Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck riding on a flat car circling the tree. Of course, after Christmas, I had that train running all through the house. And according to Nonna, “always under foot!” We lived some distance from our nearest neighbors, the Sturtevants, but during the holiday season we would hike through the snow to take them cookies that Nonna made. While we were there, we had cider, and while Mrs. Sturtevant played the piano, we sang Christmas Carols and munched on cookies. Later, each of us had to say a Christmas prayer (even me). They always had a present for me too. Usually it was something homemade like the time I got knitted wool socks. (which I didn't like, had to wear, and lasted forever). Later we would go home across the snow-covered field and sometimes the moon was shining so bright, we didn’t need a flashlight. It was a great time to be a boy living with folks who shared their love and spirit of Christmas with me.

This time of year I get the Christmas spirit and like to think back to the first Christmases that I can remember. Those would be the ones I spent at Big Bear Lake when I was living Middleworth with my Grandma Nonna and Grandpa Dodda (when I was 5 to 9 years old). I remember going into the forest and cutting down our own tree. I would help saw it down (under the watchful eye of Grandma Nonna). She would also collect fir boughs to make wreaths for gifts. We usually had a thermos of hot chocolate which always tasted oh so good! We would take the tree home and Grandpa Dodda would make a stand and we would put the tree in the living room just to the right of the fireplace. It brightened the house and we’d notice how good it smelled. Nonna showed me how to make tree decorations. She gave me a needle and thread, and I strung popcorn until I had a garland several feet long which I placed around the tree. I also took magazine pages which had lots of colored ads and would cut them in strips that I glued in a circle around another circle and so on, making a colorful

The Food Pantry and Santa invite the public The Food Pantry is inviting the community to the yearly event where food boxes and toys are given out to the less fortunate families in our community. This event takes place Saturday, Dec. 24 at the Valley Thrift Store and Food Pantry located at 4621 Isabella Blvd. in Lake Isabella from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The best time to come and see what it is all about is around 9:30 a.m.. There will be cookies, punch, coffee and goodies for munching while you watch the kids talking to Santa and getting a picture with him. You will see how the money and food and toys you have donated is used. The Food Pantry is still in need of holiday food and toys for the children. We try to give out two or three toys per child. The food box will either have a ham or turkey and all the trimmings. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. For more information, call Phyllis Brewer at 760-379-4925. Ghost Town Relics marks 23 years Kern River Courier It is the oldest operating all antique and collectibles store in the Kern Valley and it opened Dec. 6, 1988. “It’s hard to believe it has been that long ago,” said owner J. Paul Corlew. “We originally had just two rooms. Today, we have expanded to six rooms with thousands of collectibles.” The store, located at 3829 Lake Isabella Blvd., in Bodfish, out front of the historic Silver City Ghost Town in Bodfish, specializes in cowboy, Indian, mining items, artwork, glassware and curios. It also offers for sale furniture, mid-century items, toys, artifacts, fossils, glassware, old photos, knives and swords, jewelry, historic documents,

antiquarian books, advertising items, antique bottles and much more. “There are thousands of items for sale or trade. We have the largest selection of collectible items in the Valley,” Corlew said. “We also buy estates and antiques, one piece, or a houseful.” The shop also offers free market value analysis appraisals and is the only source in the valley for free copies of “Antique West” and “The Sun Runner” magazines. To celebrate the 23rd anniversary the shop is having a sale with every item 10 to 30 percent off of the marked price each weekend for the remainder of December. “Come help us celebrate and enjoy great savings at the same time,” said Corlew.

The Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce wishes to thank all those who made the 34th Lake Isabella Christmas Parade a huge success. The spectacular weather brought out a record number of spectators and we thank you for your support. There were 73 parade entries and 47 total sponsors. We presented 17 Trophies and Keepsake Ornaments to the winners of the parade. The chamber considers all entries as winners, as they came to support our community. A big Thank you to the numerous volunteers who did such an outstanding job! Thank you to all businesses and individuals who helped as sponsors of the parade. Good girl, bad boy By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “Brighton Rock” — A handsome hoodlum murders a man at the Brighton Boardwalk, and the only loose end is a pretty young witnessing waitress who says she never forgets a face. Pinkie (Sam Riley) then seduces the naive Rose (Andrea Riseborough), figuring that even if he has to murder or marry her, it beats getting the death penalty in the last year before it’s outlawed. What follows is a smoldering — if a little slow and melodramatic — story of a good Catholic girl who falls hard for the wrong bad boy. Riley’s brooding Brit feels a little too one-sided. He knows what game he’s playing and doesn’t seem all that conflicted about it. The themes from the source novel by Graham Greene are well-preserved, and that adds the necessary weight to the story. Is Rose’s faithful nature her secret strength, or is it leading her to the slaughter? “Apollo 18” — It’s found-footage madness from the dark side of the moon! It turns out that there was one more top-secret moon mission in 1974, and the classified footage collected by the astronauts tells the real story of why we never went back. Budgetary concerns and shifting policies had little to do with it — creepy crawlies hiding under moon rocks is what scared mankind away from our greatest symbolic achievement.

If we have inadvertently left you off our list, we sincerely apologize. Please know you are greatly appreciated!

Sam Riley, Andrea Riseborough All the parts are in place — isolation, unfamiliar terrain, claustrophobic settings and a premise that suspends enough disbelief — but the second-phase rockets never kick in, so this not-so-scary dud never makes it into orbit. What’s missing from the mission checklist is suspense, characters we care about, sufficient thrills and a script. This one shoots for the moon and somehow lands among the “Blair Witch” sequels. “Final Destination 5” — Like so many decent horror franchises before it, “Final Destination” embraces repetition, and it works. Once again, a lone nobody gets a clairvoyant glimpse of massive freak accident (this time it’s a bridge collapse) just in time to save a few people, forming a diverse cast of folks who will die one by one in their own, personalized freak accidents. No monster, no psychopath, just the raw malice of fate and gruesome occupational hazards. © 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Courier Antler, Fin & Feather Report

Fishing put on hold Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier columnist As Christmas quickly approaches -with the shopping and the decorating and cleaning to do -thoughts of going fishing are put on the back burner. This leaves me a little Mencarini short on information, probably for the next couple of issues. The Fish and Game website shows only the Bakersfield lakes and Brite Lake in Tehachapi being stocked this week. The bass fishermen who have braved the weather conditions are catching and releasing some nice largemouths. Most of these fish were reported to be in the six- to nine-pound class. The tossing of medium to large jigs seems to be the ticket. The crappie this year are very nice but a lot harder

to catch and fewer in numbers. For you shore anglers, Boulder Gulch, B.S. Beach and Tillie Creek areas are good places to catch rainbows. Garlic, rainbow, and egg-scented Power Bait work well. I have been asked what the deal with the crappie is. This is only my best guess, but I believe the loss of habitat could be a reason. With the lake now being 58 years old, a lot of the standing timber has rotted and either washed over or just fallen down. During a walk around the lake in the South Fork, I saw a ton of small to medium cottonwood tree hulks hugging the last high water mark. This loss of structure year after year has to have an effect on school fish that depend on this type of cover. Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and a volunteer at the Kern River Fish Hatchery. For questions or comments you can reach him through the Kern River Courier, office@kernrivercourier. com.

ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) With the new year’s opportunities almost within reach, your courageous aspects are raring to go. And don’t be surprised if a lot of people follow you. TAURUS (Apr. 20 to May 20) Change lies ahead for those ready to shuck off the tried and true to try something new. But appearances can be deceptive. Check it all out before you charge into anything. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This week promises a peek into what the new year holds for the you, both in love and careers. Family matters continue to be a factor in decisions you’re going to be facing. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) As you move into the new year, your travel aspects grow stronger, and you might find yourself making decisions about a destination and a traveling companion sooner than you’d expected. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) The new year holds both glitter and gold. This means you should begin getting the facts you’ll need to separate the real thing from the sham in order to make important decisions next year. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) A good way to start the new year might be to arrange for a visit to someone you haven’t seen in a long time. You also might want to pick up that project you put off a while back.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) As you contemplate the new year’s potential, you might want to talk things over with people who are or have been where you want to go. Their experience and advice can be helpful. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Someone close to you might feel you have no more room for him or her in your life. This calls for immediate reassurance of your love so you can start the new year on a high note. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) The coming year will bring more people into your life. Some situations might not work out as well as others. But overall, everyone earns something, and that’s always a good thing. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) The new year could find you indulging in one or more of the hobbies you’ve always wanted to take up. And don’t be surprised if they ultimately direct you toward a new career. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) The artistic Aquarian should find more opportunities in the new year. You might even make some potentially helpful contacts as you gather to ring in the year 2012. PISCES (Feb. 19 to Mar. 20) The new year offers challenges for those who want to make better use of the skills they now have and learn new ones. © 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Greener ways to heat your home Richard Cayia Rowe Special to the Courier Wood is a great renewable heating option. It is widely available and clean burning (in EPA-certified stoves). But for some of us, handling the firewood and tending the fire Rowe require too much time. If a wood stove isn’t right for you, you might want to check out pellet stoves, which burn pellets made of compressed wood by-products and other biomass. Easy to run, a pellet stove can run for more than a day and keep the temperature controlled by a thermostat. Google “turn waste wood into home heat: buy a pellet stove” for a great detailed article http://goo.gl/ 6x0sb. Another reason to consider switching from fossil-fueled heat sources to a pellet stove: it can reduce your carbon footprint. Wood pellets produce almost no net climate-changing carbon dioxide if they are used as fuel (although some fossil fuels typically are used in the manufacture and transportation of pellets). When I moved to the Kern River Valley in 2004, my house was heated by 220v electric resistance wall heaters and had two

hearths, one for a wood -burning stove and one for a propane stove. I put in a fancy Canadian pellet stove (enviro.com) I bought online. These stoves are now available locally. If I were buying a pellet stove now, I suspect I’d opt for an American-made stove. If you buy/install one before Jan. 1, 2012, you might get a $300 federal income tax credit. The tax credit is 10 percent (up to $300) for the purchase and installation of a 75 percent efficient heating appliance in 2011 (see http://goo.gl/xemje). One drawback of a pellet stove is that they need electricity to run (fans, feeder mechanisms). So, when the power goes out, the stove stops working and can leak smoke into your house. So, I added an efficient Lennox woodburning stove I bought on closeout sale from Fireside Stoves on Lake Isabella Blvd. In winter, I alternate between the wood stove and pellet stove. I use mica-panel electric heaters for spot heating in my bathroom and computer/TV room. And I use an electric mattress pad heater to warm up my bed before my doggies and I retire for a good winter’s night sleep.
