Valley sites nominated for Sierra guide Mike Devich Kern River Courier Several local sites have been nominated for the new Sierra Nevada Geotourism MapGuide project being undertaken by the National Geographic in conjunction with the Sierra Business Council and the Sierra Nevada Conservancy. As the Courier reported in January, local people were asked to nominate KRV sites: places to eat, activities and events for inclusion in the guide by logging on to www.sierranevadatourism.org. Chuck White, of Kern River Valley Revitalization (www.krvr.org), is on the Sierra Nevada Geotourism Council, which has the responsibility of guiding the project and developing additional components. “During 2012 a printed Map Guide will become available, and smart phone apps will be introduced which can update information as visitors explore the Sierra, including here in the KRV,” he said in a letter to the
Courier. “My goal is for this project to be as beneficial to the Kern River Valley as possible, as we work to promote and sustain tourism in this area consistent with the values and principles of geotourism.” The project’s web site is already live. It is packed with Sierra attractions from the Oregon border on down to the KRV, which is at the southern end of the iconic mountain range. It is an ongoing, ever-changing site. National Geographic project manager, Jim Dion, said, “Site visitors can add comments, read what others have posted and connect to Facebook or Twitter accounts to share what they’ve found. Also, it’s never too late to add unique attractions to the Map Guide; nominations are continually reviewed for possible inclusion.” Among the KRV attractions listed so far on the Map Guide are A Stone’s Throw art gallery in Kernville, the annual Isabella Lake Fishing Derby, Audubon’s Kern River Preserve in Weldon, and the annual Whiskey Flat Days celebration.
Southern California Edison Special to the Courier Taking safety shortcuts can result in unwanted outcomes. So Southern California Edison is asking its customers to take an extra 10 minutes to check for overloaded wall plugs, frayed light strings and other electrical safety and fire hazards. “It seems like there’s never enough time to get all the preparations done for the holidays,” said Bill Messner, of SCE “But this year, we hope people will take a few moments to make sure their equipment is in good working order, and that there are no unsafe situations in the home. Most ‘accidents’ are preventable.” National Fire Protection Association statistics indicate: Thirty percent of all home fires and 38 percent of home fire deaths occur during December, January and February. On average, 260 home fires begin with Christmas trees each year, resulting in 12 deaths, 24 injuries and $16.4 million in property damage. Candles start 45 percent of home decoration fires. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that each year about 4,000 injuries associated with electric extension cords result in emergency room visits. Thirteen percent of these injuries involve children under 5; electrical burns to the mouth accounted for 50 percent of the injuries to young children. Use only lighting and cords approved by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL), an independent, nonprofit organization that tests electrical components and equipment for potential hazards. For more tips on lighting and safety during the holidays, see www.sce.com/holidaylighting.

Things I Have Noticed...
Want to show appreciation to Good Samaritan At 10 p.m. on the night of Saturday, Sept. 10, we were driving west on Highway 178. At the corner of 178 and Sierra Way, a Dodge Ram, heading south, failed to honor the stop sign at Sierra Way and slammed into our small blue Smart car. We were spun around and all very much bruised up. A white truck with a tall young man wearing a cowboy hat and boots stopped to assist us and call 911. He was in a hurry, since he was late for work. He was going east on Highway 178 toward Onyx when stopped to help. We would like to find this young man to thank him for assisting us until help arrived. We hope this young man reads The Courier. Or if anyone knows him, please contact us at 760-887-3436. The Nicod Family Weldon

Our Casa de Lotsawork Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist One day as my wife and I were returning from Delano by way of Greenhorn on State Route 155, we decided to look at a cabin that was for sale in Alta Sierra. What we Middleworth wanted was something we could use as a get-away: a place for rest and relaxation. After we saw it we loved it, wanted it and bought it. Within a month we were spending our weekends at the cabin (which was built in 1919.) Before the first month was over we realized that what we had, was not a get away for rest and relaxation. It was, instead, a constant stream of “why isn't that working,” “what blew the fuse,” and “what are those noises and that smell?” The first weekend we stayed there, we noticed an evil smell coming from our kitchen oven. I took it apart and found a nest with three dead mice in various stages of decomposition. That’s where the odor came from and I deduced that lighting up the oven to warm the kitchen, had baked the three blind mice. Next we heard attic noises which turned out to be family of racoons. It took three months and a case of catfood to get rid of them.
Only
About the time they were evicted, a family of skunks moved into the crawlspace beneath our floor. We learned a lot about skunks in the next two months, mostly how to catch them, but found nothing on how to safely release them from the Have-a-Heart Trap used to catch them. Here’s what did (and still do). After catching the skunk and transporting it to away from the cabin, I held a blanket up (one I didn’t want to use again, ever!) between me and the trapped skunk. Then I opened the door of the trap, wedged it with a stick, and backed away quickly. This usually works if I don’t fall down while backing up. When I finally got rid of the skunks, then it was on to a war with mice, but that is a story for another time. As the years rolled by and the repairs and critter wars continued, we knew for sure that “rest and relaxation” at the cabin was not in the cards. Eventually I made a sign that we nailed to the porch railing that read: “Casa de Lotsawork.” And it was. We sold that cabin long ago, but drive by it from time to time. We notice that the porch needs replacement, the roof needs work and the chimney needs repair. But I’m sure that someday, someone will buy the cabin for rest and relaxation. Good luck with that! Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.
Great deals for the Holidays!

Giving Continued from page 1 Kern River Valley collected a record 1,140 shoe box gifts this year, an increase of 450 over last year. Many packed a shoe box, gave monetary donations or donated their time at one of the many shoe box packing parties around the Valley, or at the Collection Center this past week, impacting the lives of children in extreme poverty and need around our world. On a larger scale, Kern County collected more than 13,000 shoe box gifts, an increase of more than 2,500. National Collection Week 2011 for Operation Christmas Child is now officially complete. Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse.

Vampires, apes and pandas...oh my! By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK: “Fright Night” (R) — This ’80s classic had to be resurrected to cash in on the vampire trend, but at least this supernatural thriller’s undead heart is in the right place. Charlie (Anton Yeltsin), a high school senior, thinks he has it all. When people in the neighborhood go missing, a trail of evidence indicates that a mysterious neighbor (Colin Farrell) is actually a vampire. While the movie isn’t especially scary, viewers will be drawn in by talented performances and a script that drums on the raw nerves of the psyche. Farrell’s vampire radiates the right level of predatory seduction that congeals into a memorable and multidimensional monster. Whether it’s Charlie’s desire for maturity, his single mother’s desperation or his girlfriend’s youthful beauty and vulnerability, “Fright Night” knows how to get under the skin and add weight to the climactic conflict. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (PG-13) — This out-of-the-blue reboot sticks to the good old “We’re the real monsters” theme, but manages to win the war against the stale flavor of another out-of-the-blue franchise reboot. Smarty-pantsed apes decide being used as test subjects isn’t so great, and an army of primate anarchists is formed.
Caesar, the computer-animated ape with super smarts, is a wondrous achievement made from computer wizardry and the best motion-capture actor in the biz, Ape: Caesar Andy Serkis (Smeagol in “Lord of the Rings” and the big guy in the 2005 “King Kong.”) The story and the themes are predictable, but the emotional bond between James Franco and a super-sympathetic CG ape is a true surprise. “Kung Fu Panda 2” (PG) — After realizing his potential and achieving his dream of being the Dragon Warrior, Po the Panda (voiced by an emphatic Jack Black) learns his Kung Fu adventure is just beginning. When an evil force using a new weapon threatens the realm and the future of Kung Fu, Po and the Furious Five engage on a mesmerizing series of action sequences to save the day. This spectacle is less of a touching morality tale and more of a wild action-comedy for the kids. While the storytelling lacks discipline, Dreamworks earns a black belt in visual splendor and creative combat. © 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Courier Antler, Fin & Feather Report
No end to fishing at year’s end Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier Columnist 2011 was just a blur with only December left until the end-ofthe-year. Deer season is over, some of you may have even had a chance at a wild fall turkey, but for most of us we had the dom- Mencarini estic equal, not as challenging but both taste great. Upland game birds, ducks, rabbit and squirrel are still in season so go out and have some fun. Here is some news for you Derby fisherman: the nets are in the water at French Gulch Marina and the fish have arrived. The Derby fish will get an extra feeding this year, which will make three meals a day. This should beef them up a bit With the Jet Stream dropping down to its winter location, it
brings lots of low pressure fronts, changing the moods of the fish every few days. This has the bass fishermen pulling the hair out of their jigs trying to put together some sort of a pattern. The crappie, it seems, are where you find them. Or better yet, where you find them hungry. Speaking of crappie, they should have a belly full of eggs. It is their time for the winter spawn. I think minnows are what they want to eat these days. The lake’s shoreline trout bit’s that time of year. This is a perfect time to grab your camera and your hiking shoes and get some exercise while taking some pictures of the lake while the level is low. It really is a great way to spend a couple of hours. Remember: a dry line catches no fish.
Special to the Courier 1,000 lbs. of trout were delivered on Monday by the California Department of Fish & Game. Marvin Waters (left) and Danny Zide from the Kernville Hatchery weigh the fish as they are being delivered to the holding pens in preparation for the 23rd annual Isabella Lake Fishing Derby, which will be held March 31 to April 2, 2012.

Full of Grace & Truth Jack Duitsman, Pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth . . . For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth were Duitsman realized through Jesus Christ. - John 1:14,17 One of the beautiful aspects of truth is that it is always truth. There may be a great deal of evolving parts to the makeup of cultural shift, but a constant in this process is the bedrock of truth. Simply spoken, truth is what it is, and it impacts each generation with a similar choice to be embraced or rejected. To the extent that it can be made chic, glamorous, hip, pithy, or cute, the end result of truth cutting across the grain of human willingness to welcome will always be the same. By our very nature we do “love darkness rather than light.” Revisit the pair of Scripture quoted above, and let’s move together to the Father’s heart in sending Jesus to restore relationship with humanity whom He loves. In and of itself, truth becomes a powerfully unattainable force that rips through our experience like a weapon of mass destruction. This undeniable reality is brought into full focus by the Mosaic law given on Mount Sinai, and the utter failure of humankind to tow the line of truth laid down by God’s 10commandment invitation to return to Him through this method. Remember, truth was and always will be truth, and the fault did not lie in the commandments, but in our inability to live accordingly. To such a conundrum Jesus came, and John records His coming as an advent of truth incarnate, but in a wrapping of grace. Perhaps
simple words can never convey the power of God in adequate ways, but the folding together of truth and grace makes all the difference in the world. What once was unattainable even though true, became embraceable while not diminishing the truth one whit. We may attempt to muddy the waters of understanding and application with our self-willed desire to live life according to our dictates, but the Father’s willingness to walk us out of our own rebellion is attested to by the never ending work in us by the Holy Spirit. Two times the Apostle John described the coming of Jesus as the perfect marriage between grace and truth. Too much focus on grace and we become sloppy in allowing the truth of God to work continued freedom in our souls. Too much focus on truth and we become locked into legalism and a life process that relies upon our own ability to work out what only the Father can make alive in us. Even here we are tempted to throw up our hands as though this perfect balance is simply too much to ask of such imperfection as we live with on an ongoing basis, but we need not give in to this deceptive lie of the flesh. Notice that in sending grace and truth in the perfect combination, the origin was heavenly, and the application was earthly. It is the desire and work of the Father to restore relationship to Himself, and the outworking of this desire is the transformation that comes to our hearts by the work of the Holy Spirit. Certainly there must be a willing cooperation on our part, but the energy to become the perfect blending place for grace and truth is the Father’s work. How remarkable to be set free by the eternal nature of truth within a culture that abhors such ancient landmarks, and yet to be changed in an environment of grace that forever fosters praise and thanks from hearts that understand the amazing nature of what is happening within us. Let's be reminded this advent season that this is who our Savior is, how He came to bring us the love of God, and how we are now invited to live.

Help the needy this holiday season Your local Salvation Army, Lake Isabella Service Unit, is requesting your help. Many families in our community will not be able to celebrate Christmas this year because of the ever increasing cost of auto fuel, propane for heat and food. The local Salvation Army unit provided their annual Holiday Dinner for the needy. They need help to help those who need a hand up this Christmas. There are many ways you can help. Cash donations are always welcome. Cash will be used to assist with food, utilities, medical, transportation and other assistance through the year 2012. Donations of non-perishable food for our pantry will also be accepted. Cash donations may be mailed to Salvation Army, Lake Isabella Service Unit, P.O. Box 2786, Lake Isabella, CA 93240. Your personal involvement in bell ringing for funds to help the needy in 2012 would be of help, or if you have administrative or office experience, you may want to work in our office. If you would like to help us help our community, please call today 760-379-4600, or drop by the Salvation Army office at 6105 Lake Isabella Blvd., Lake Isabella on Mondays and Wednesdays, or e-mail commchristianservicecenter@gmail.com.
Local water provider seeks customer feedback Local water provider, California Water Service Company, is conducting a survey to better understand customer attitudes, interests and preferred means of communication. Cal Water is offering an incentive for customers to complete the survey: a drawing for one $1,000 Visa gift card and 25 $100 Visa gift cards. “We are committed to providing excellent service, and one way to do that is to know how customers prefer to receive water-related information from us,” said Shannon Dean, Director of Communications. “Would customers rather get emergency notifications via door hangers or text messages? Would they prefer to get water conservation information on our web site or on Facebook? We need the answers to these and other questions in order to use our resources most efficiently. With the holidays around the corner, the gift card drawing will hopefully be an incentive for more of our customers to take the survey.” The survey is being offered online to save printing and postage costs. Customers can access the survey at www.calwater.com/survey. Customers without computer access may call (877) 768-7741.
Death notices are $5. Full obituaries are $20, or $25 with a picture. For more information, call the Courier at (760) 376-2860 during office hours weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
