The December solstice is also known as the "summer solstice" in the southern hemisphere. It is the winter solstice only in the northern hemisphere. This year it takes place at 3:12 a.m. PST today, Friday December 21. The December solstice occurs when the sun reaches its most southerly declination of 23.5 degrees which is when the North Pole is tilted 23.5 degrees away from the sun. Depending on the Gregorian calendar, the December solstice occurs annually on a day between December 20 and December 23. On this date, all places above a latitude of 66.5 degrees north (Arctic Polar Circle) are now in darkness, while locations below a latitude of 66.5 degrees south (Antarctic Polar Circle) receive 24 hours of daylight. The sun is directly overhead on the Tropic of Capricorn in the southern hemisphere during the December solstice. It also marks the longest day of the year in terms of daylight hours for those living south of the equator. Those living or travelling south from the Antarctic Circle towards the South Pole

will see the midnight sun during this time of the year. As with the June solstice, the December solstice's varying dates are mainly due to the calendar system. The Gregorian calendar, which is used in most western countries, has 365 days in a common year and 366 days in a leap year. However, the tropical year, which is the length of time the sun takes to return to the same position in the seasons cycle (as seen from Earth), is different to the calendar year. The tropical year is approximately 365.242199 days but varies from year to year because of the influence of other planets. The exact orbital and daily rotational motion of the Earth, such as the "wobble" in the Earth's axis (precession), also contributes to the changing solstice dates. For an observer in the northern hemisphere, the December solstice marks the day of the year with the least hours of daylight. Those living or traveling north of the Arctic Circle towards the North Pole will not be able to see the sun during this time of the year. It is important to note that Earth does not move at a constant speed in its elliptical orbit.

Therefore the seasons are not of equal length. The consolation in the northern hemisphere is that spring and summer last longer than autumn and winter (when the December solstice occurs). The relative position of the Earth's axis to the sun changes during the

cycle of seasons. This phenomenon is the reason why the sun's height above the horizon changes throughout the year. It is also responsible for the seasons through controlling the intensity and duration of sunlight received at various locations around the planet.

I can’t help but comment
Things I have noticed...
It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine
Sandy Klotz
Accordig to the Mayan calendar, December 21, 2012, it’s the end of the world as we know it. And when you read the lyrics of the song with the same name written by the rock group Batelaan R.E.M. of the early 90’s you could become a believer: ‘It's the end of the world as we know it’. That's great, it starts with an earthquake. Birds and snakes, an aeroplane and Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn. World serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs feed it off an aux speak, grunt, no, strength, no, ladder start to clatter with fear. Fight down height. Wire in a fire, representing seven games,. A government for hire and a combat site. Left of West and coming in a hurry. With the furies breathing down your neck. Team by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered, cropped. Look at that low playing! Fine, then. Uh oh, overflow, population, common food, but it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs. Listen to your heart bleed. Dummy with the rapture. And the revered and the right, right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light,.
Feeling pretty psyched It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine. Six o'clock-TV hour, Don't get caught in foreign towers. Slash and burn, return. Listen to yourself churn. Locking in, uniforming, book burning, blood letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate. Light a candle, light a votive. Step down, step down. Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh-oh. This means no fear cavalier. Renegade steer clear! A tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline. The other night I dreamt of knives. Continental drift divide. Mountains sit in a line. Leonard Bernstein Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs. Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom! You symbiotic, patriotic, Slam book neck, right? Right. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it It's the end of the world as we know it and.... should this be the last issue of the Courier, I feel fine. “Its been a good ride”. Q: A:
Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist
I'm so fat, those darn cookies have a lot of calories in them. You know it's not easy being Santa Claus." "Santa Claus!!! I exclaimed, "I thought you said Sandy Klotz Is it really you?" "Yep." he said, "wait a minute I'll turn on my video camera and if you turn to channel 453 you can see me". So I did and noticed he was wearing a Brooks Brothers suit, a cowboy hat and Mukluks. "Hold it", I said, "that's not the way Santa is supposed to look. Where's the red suit and stuff?" "They're at the cleaners," said Santa, "I want to look sharp for my visits on Christmas Eve. I gotta keep up my image. Also my toy and presents bag is being modified so it can hold all the Eye pads, and cell phones for the little tykes." "Do you text while driving your sleigh?" I asked. "Heavens no," he exclaimed. "That would be dangerous and a bad example for the little shavers." Right now my biggest problem is my smart phone. It's acting kind of dumb and I've got a call in for AT&T repair. In the meantime in case I have trouble contacting everyone by morning, would you wish everyone a merry Christmas and happy New Year for me?” And I said I would, so "Merry Christmas to you all and the very best New Year ever from Santa and Mrs. Claus, the Elves, the Reindeer and Rod and Vicki Middleworth!”
Just yesterday I was dialing my phone to call my brother who lives in Crestline. The phone rang a couple of times and some guy with a deep voice said "Hello, Middleworth Sandy here!" I was shocked, this was not my brother and I was sure I hadn't misdialed. So I said, Sandy who? And the deep voice said, "I thought everyone knew me. I am Sandy Klotz." "Wait a minute" I said, "Where do you live and what are you doing at my brothers house?" "I'm not at your brother's house" he said. "My phone is on the fritz, because of all the calls I get this time of year. Anyway, to answer your question,, I live at the North Pole in a gingerbread house with a big workshop and lots of small workers. Yep," he said, “in just a few days I'm going to visit every child in the world working from dusk to daylight on Christmas Eve.""Oh right," I said. "You can't really do that.” "Au Contraire" said Mr. Klotz “I have done it for many, many years and this year should be no different. My biggest problem is the cookies and milk that so many kiddies leave for me. That's why

Wonderful performance - Since the middle of October, 19 children from the Kern River Valley practiced for their musical performance of "Star Of Wonder". There were several big stars such as: Superstar (Mya Nelson), Rock Star (T.J. Sanders), Falling Star (Brooklyn Gallis), North Star (Kalith Cushman), Lucky Star (Kasey Lassen), and Shooting Star (Alex Martinez). The big stars were accompanied by lots of little starlets, along with "Wee Three" Kings, an angel, a moon and lots of "Big Band Shepherds". The performance was held on Dec. 9 at the Kernville First Baptist Church.

But as for you Bethlehem, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of Duitsman eternity. - Micah 5:2 It is typically the Everest that commands our attention and tickles our fancy. The Grand Canyon; the Empire State Building; the 105,000 packed into the Rose Bowl to watch the "Grandaddy of 'em all." The majestic California Redwoods are stuff of legends with holes in their base big enough to drive cars and sell postcards; and the 1492's of history sweep us up in the largeness of impact they brought along. The blast of jet fuel propelling nations into outer space has been a headline grabber for this generation, and before these high flyers took the spotlight, majestic solo flights over the vast oceans of the world drew the attention of the masses. It's the Big Top, the really big show, big business, and bigger is always better!

And then came Jesus, the long awaited Savior of the world. The splash He made on the world's scene was majestic only in its obscurity, and the attention commanded by this gift of all gifts given on this day of all days is forever shrouded in the heart of the Father's unwillingness to display His grandeur in sending His Son among us. How humble in His approach to providing humanity with salvation, how inauspicious in the unfolding of a plan that would be extended to all people . . . everywhere . . . for all time. Oddly, it appears this underwhelming entrance into the affairs of humankind was exactly the plan, for the above verse is descriptive of all that can be found in Scripture where Messiah's coming is prophetically foretold. From too-small-tobe-on-a-map Bethlehem, to the noroom-in-an-inn manger, Jesus the Savior was not missed by the masses, for there was hardly anything to see. Angelic pronouncements and angelic choirs singing in the night are about as close a big deal as can be found, and it appears even these were not meant to draw the attention of the masses as they were to affirm the faith of those few to whom they were sent that indeed something of God's power was occurring. It appears if the grandiose is being looked for, we will be disappointed over and again, and as such, the Father's plan remains intact.

Antler, Fin & Feather Report
‘Crappie’weather makes good fishing Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier Columnist This week in December marks my third anniversary writing this column for the Courier. The phrase, "Time flies when you are having fun," is true in this case. Thanks to all who Mencarini have read and supported me. It's been fun and I will do my best to make my future columns as interesting and fun as they have been in the past. With that out of the way let's get back to business. If you have been on or around the lake lately you would have noticed that there are quite a few species of fish eating birds gorging themselves on the shad in the lake. Pelicans, Kormarants, Grebes, Mergansers, and Seagulls are all gathered in the main launch and French Gulch area for the winter shad fest. The birds are not the only ones feasting on the shad. The bass, crappie, trout, and catfish are also getting their stomachs full. This week I was able to get some time to fish. If you think that the fish won't bite when the wind is blowing and it's raining and cold, you might rethink. I can't tell you about the rest of the fish world but I can tell you that unstable weather
doesn't affect the winter time crappie bite. The crappie bite is doing well right now with the females full of eggs and ready to spawn. Crappie will spawn twice a year, late fall and spring. The crappie that I have caught this year are the best I have seen since 2008. So dress warm and dry and get out and enjoy your lake. And I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.
‘Crappie” photo Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and a avid fisherman. For questions or comments you can reach him through the Kern River Courier, office@kern rivercourier.com.

Your BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) is the percentage of your blood volume that is alcohol. The more you drink, the more your BAC increases. As BAC increases, alcohol's effects become less pleasant and more dangerous. The rate at which a person's BAC rises varies depending on: ■ The number of drinks consumed. The more consumed, the higher the BAC. ■ How quickly drinks are consumed. Alcohol consumed more quickly raises the BAC higher than when drinks are

consumed over a longer period of time. ■ Your gender. Women generally have less water weight and more body fat per pound than men. Because alcohol doesn't go into fat cells as easily, more alcohol remains in a women's body. ■ Your weight. More weight equals more water; water dilutes alcohol and lowers the BAC. ■ Food in your stomach. Food slows down alcohol absorption. The best food to eat is protien. It takes the longest to digest. A drink is 12 ounces of beer, or 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of hard liquor. ■ Remember if you drink, drink responsibly.

Poor Sparky By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK "Frankenweenie" (PG) -Victor Frankenstein is a boy who loves his dog, Sparky. When Sparky is tragically killed in an accident, Victor is distraught. So Victor gets the idea to stitch up the dead dog and use science resurrect his best friend. You see, Victor is an oddball character in a creepy, stop-motion animated, black-and-white world created by Tim Burton. This story is sort of a pet project for Burton. He made a live-action version of this same idea in the '80s when he worked at Disney--it didn't get much of a release. With experience, lots of money and the creative control that comes with making lots of money, Burton makes "Frankenweenie" a clever, creepy flick with an entertaining escalation. "Dredd" (R) -- In the grim, gray future, much of the U.S. East Coast is combined into a single, crime-ridden mega-city. The Judges are supercops with authority to be judge, jury and executioner all at once. Dredd (celebrated B-level action star Karl Urban) is the best Judge in the force -- he excels at deciding to kill bad guys and then killing them right away. In this movie, Dredd and his rookie sidekick get trapped in a giant super-slum full of drug pushers.
Karl Urban in "Dread" It doesn't have the legendary lousiness of 1995's "Judge Dredd," so you might not get as many laughs. This new Dredd has a different sense of humor, and enough to add a few chuckles to the ceaseless violence. There also are plenty of nifty visual flourishes (and it's convenient that the movie's fictional drug makes users see the world in slow-motion. "Hit & Run" (R) -- This is one of those movies with just a godawful mess of plot, but there's lots of snappy dialogue, car chases and onscreen chemistry to keep it going. Charlie (Dax Shepard, writer and codirector) is a former getaway driver, now in witness protection. His girlfriend, Annie (Kristen Bell) is beautiful and smart and unaware of his past. Bradley Cooper shows up as Charlie's former partner in crime, come to take revenge (that must happen a lot). © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It's a good time for reunions with those very special people from your past. You could be pleasantly surprised by what comes to light during one of these get-togethers. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The new year gets off to an encouraging start for the Bold Bovine who takes that demanding workplace challenge by the horns and steers it in the right direction. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The clever Gemini will be quick to spot the telltale signs of workplace changes that could open up new opportunities for the right person. (And that's you, isn't it?) CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The Moon Child's post-holiday letdown soon lifts as you begin to get back into your comfortable routine. Someone from your past extends a surprise bid to reconnect. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You've been the ultimate social Lion over the holidays. Now it's time to relax and recharge your energy so you can be at your best when you pounce on that new project. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A relationship could be moving in a direction you might not want to follow. Step back for a better overview of the situation. You might be surprised at what you see. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Emotions
rule at the start of the week, affecting your perception about a decision. Best advice: Avoid commitments until that good Libran sense kicks back in. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A longtime friendship could take a romantic turn early in the new year. While this pleases your passionate side, your logical self might want to go slow. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Someone might make a surprising disclosure about a trusted friend or workplace colleague. Stay cool and reserve judgment until you get more facts. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might think you've found what you've been looking for. But appearances can be deceiving. Don't act on your discovery until you know more about it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You're no doubt anxious for that confusing situation to be cleared up. But don't press for a quick resolution or you might overlook some vital facts. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Now that your holiday distractions are easing, you need to apply yourself to getting those unfinished tasks done so you can begin a new project with a clean slate. BORN THIS WEEK: People respect both your wisdom and your deep sense of loyalty and compassion. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Richard Rowe Courier Special The Kern River Valley Education and Cultural Foundation held a successful Holiday Gala Fundraiser at the Lodge at Painted Rock on December 11, 2012, chaired by SCE's Deborah Hess. More than 75 people attended. Mike Thomas introduced his childhood friend Stuart Witt as the speaker for the evening. Raised in Onyx, Mr. Witt is a member of the Board of Trustees of Kern Community College District. Drawing upon his experiences as a Naval Aviator, business executive, and General Manager of the Air and Space Port in Mojave, he spoke about the importance of the role of community colleges in helping to strengthen the community and enabling individuals to realize their dreams, through classes relevant to the needs of the students. Cerro Coso Community College President Jill Board attended with other leaders from Ridgecrest. The 2012 Clayton A. Witherow $1,000 Academic Achievement Award was presented to Lake Isabella resident, Paula Nelson. She is a full-time Cerro Coso KRV student.
At the Holiday Gala, KRVECF announced the establishment of a Scholarship Fund with an initial donation of $2,500 from Southern California Edison augmented with $1,250 in additional donations from those attending the Gala. KRVECF will earmark this fund to help Cerro Coso KRV students continuing their education at 4 year institutions elsewhere. The Gala's Silent Auction included many items, including a free week in Cancun, a guitar with Carlos Santana's signature, and a picture by Fr. Bob Woods. It generated $1,596 which will help cover expenses of the River Rhythms free concerts at Riverside Park in Kernville on the five Friday evenings in August 2013. KRVECF expresses thanks to all who contributed to the success of this fund raising event; including table sponsors: SCE, KVHD and Robert Rusby who raised an additional $1,143 benefiting KRVECF's General Fund. KRVECF's mission is to provide encouragement and support for public education and community cultural activities serving the Kern River Valley.
