In the Land of the Lake, near the hills of the Kern We notice the houses, where the road starts to turn.
To want all the best that life has to bring. Cry “Peace to the world” and many good things.
It’s home to the families, who have love for this land Surrounded by mountains, and water and sand.
That makes our life happy, and gives it a plus, When friends come around, and join in with us
As this year passes and comes to an end, We wish a great Christmas To this Valley of friends.
To wish that the New Year brings peace and good will To the world and its people, and us on the Hill!
By writing these verses that wishes folks well. Good tidings to all. It’s not a hard sell.
“Merry Christmas to all. Have a great Twenty Twelve,” Says Rod, Vicki, Santa and all of his Elves.

Carmen lived through the Long Beach earthquake. Carmen’s husband said he married her because she was the only one who could get the tar out of his pants: he was a roofer. They had three daughters: Merle, Chris and Barbara. Carmen worked at Newberry's Department Store, and at a Mexican restaurant making tamales. Carmen's hobbies were making artificial flowers, baking and gardening. She sewed all of her children's clothes. Carmen has lived at Kern Village in

Cop comedy captivates By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Guard” (R) — In the small, stony grey part of Ireland, a murder becomes the single thread that could unravel a big wool sweater of crime. It’s the kind of oddball setup and sinister conspiracy that can be tackled only by a mismatched duo from contrasting worlds: a doughy, sardonic small-town Irish cop (Brendan Gleeson) and a straightlaced, authoritative FBI agent (Don Cheadle.) The two proven actors handle the lowered-brow comedy like a brain surgeon handles a game of Operation. Gleeson’s quips and character-acting carry the comedy well and precipitate chemistry with Cheadle’s straight man. “The Guard” shows that the buddy-cop comedy is still good for a laugh, provided moviemakers are handy with the right setting, script and talented performers who can have fun with it. “Contagion” (PG-13) — This fast-paced, broad-scoped and paranoia-inducing disaster flick follows a deadly plague and its effects on human life as we know it — while ending a lot of it. Gweneth Paltrow picks up a new super-bug in Hong Kong, then spreads it all over the place on her way back home to her Matt Damon husband. A star-lined cast adds gravitas to the lives of the various folks feeling the impact of the epidemic, including Marion Cotillard,

“I Am” — Director Shadyac made his millions directing Jim Carey in movies like “Ace Ventura” and “Bruce Almighty.” After an accident left him with a long, painful recovery to think about life, he decided to put together a small crew and talk to experts about what’s wrong with the world and how to fix it. Some segments are shallow and saccharine-sweet, but the majority are charmingly optimistic and at least a little thoughtprovoking.

Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet and Jude Law. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the story ably shifts focus from wide-angle to up close and intimate. The film really shines with its examinations of the many points of contact we have with each other in everyday life. When shaking the wrong hand or eating the wrong bar nut could end your life, people try to adapt to a new, sterile way of life.

ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) The New Year brings challenges that can change many things in your life. You need to be prepared not only to confront them, but also to deal with what happens afterward. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You have what it takes to set your goals quite a bit higher this year. Learn what you need to know and put what you learn into your efforts. A partner offers loving support. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) In true Gemini Twin fashion, you’re conflicted about a decision you know you’ll have to make in this New Year. Best advice: Get the facts before you make any commitment. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A friend offers you an exciting opportunity for the New Year. Although your positive aspects are strong in most respects, caution is advised. Investigate before you invest. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) You can make this New Year a roaring success. Start by readjusting your goals to reflect the changes in the economy. Your den-mate offers both wise and loving support. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) The New Year brings new opportunities for change. But you need to be ready to move from the comfortable status
quo to the challenging unknown. It’s up to you. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Your most important New Year’s resolution should be to work out problems with a family member in order to avoid continued misunderstandings. Do it soon, for both of your sakes. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) The New Year has much to offer the intensely determined Scorpian, who isn’t afraid to take on challenges and stay with them until they surrender their rewards. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) You’ll have many fine opportunities in this New Year. But be warned: Reject offers of “help.” You work best when you’re free to be your own creative self. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) The New Year offers changes that you might feel you’re not quite ready for. Best advice: Deal with them one step at a time, until you’ve built up your self-confidence. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Travel is a dominant aspect of the New Year. This could mean relocating to another city (or even another country) in connection with your education or your career. PISCES (Feb. 19 to Mar. 20) This New Year brings news about a change you’ve been anticipating. You might have a problem persuading a loved one about your new plans, but he or she will soon go along with them. © 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Looking into the eyes of Eternity Jack Duitsman, Pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville “Then he took Him into his arms, and blessed God” – Luke 2:28 The prophetic, by its very nature is other worldly, yet it affects our lives in the natural order of affairs. Duitsman According to the Levitical command, Mary and Joseph brought the Lord Jesus to the temple with the prescribed offering to present Him to the Lord. Quite a picture of the spiritual and physical meeting together, as the Light of world coming to bring salvation, held in the arms of another as the physical requirements of dedication were being fulfilled according to the Mosaic law. At this point we are tempted to turn such occasions into the routine and religious, overlooking the deeper aspects of what might be taking place at the spiritual level. It may be easier to take this approach, living life on the one dimensional plane of only the physical, but we are missing the point in a couple of ways: 1) life is happening at the spiritual level whether we are interested or not; and 2) the real reasons we feign dis-
interest in things spiritual has everything to do with our human pride that is desperate to maintain control of its own destiny. Simeon certainly could have taken this approach on the day Jesus was presented in the temple. Just another day, just another family, just another sacrifice in dedication of just another baby. This was a no-brainer, rev up the old ritual machine, offer up the sacrifice, and Simeon would be in and out of this in no time. Except Simeon was looking at life through eyes that held spiritual understanding, and he saw something in the baby Jesus that was far beyond what appeared on the surface. In holding Jesus in His arms, the prophetic whisper of the Holy Spirit revealed a truth that here was the embodiment of the Eternal God, the long awaited Messiah that would deliver salvation to all humanity. This certainly brings the correlation between the physical and spiritual into fantastic view! What Simeon experienced in holding Jesus in His arms was not other worldly to the point where we can not expect similar in our own lives. While the birth of the Savior was a once in history event that impacted Simeon’s life, the interaction of the Lord in each of our lives is an ongoing work that we can expect and embrace. What may

Celebrating Jesus’ birth Clarence Semonious, Pastor Prince of Peace Lutheran Fellowship, Kernville
Sunday, Dec. 25 is the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Anointed One of God. Only by understanding Jesus’ love is the event awesome. The Bible begins, “In the Semonious beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1. The Gospel of John begins, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1. Proverbs 25:2 states that, “It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.” “And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.’ And it was so.” Genesis 1:14-15. What these diverse passages tell me is that before the fall of mankind into the darkness of sin; before God created, His plan was to create mankind to be part of His family in the literal sense. God’s being included everything that mankind is or was or ever will be. Of course, there is more to God than what mankind has, but God in the person of Jesus – blood flesh and bone – paid for our sins. All who trust that good news and are born again, (“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3) will see the kingdom of God. Celebrate that!

seem a purely physical endeavor (i.e. shopping for groceries, or cashing a check at the bank) is in reality interwoven with the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives to restore the image of the Father on our souls. At any and every moment the spiritual (prophetic) can propel itself into the forefront of our understanding, and turn an ordinary event into an extraordinary moment of the Father’s revelation of His heart of love. As another Christmas is upon us, let’s be encouraged to enjoy the special sights and sounds, while at the same time looking beyond the holiday trimmings to see what the Holy Spirit would work in our hearts.

Farewell to 2011 Matt Freeman Kern River Courier Columnist
Well here we are, almost at the end of another year. How the time flies! 2011 has been full of real estate news, both good and bad. Nationally, it looks like the economy may at Freeman least be growing at a small pace, and recently a new report came out concerning new construction, which is up for the last two quarters. This coupled with recent local trends indicate that 2012 may be bringing some market stabilization to both the state and our local market here in the Kern River Valley. Here is a quick synopsis of the local data that has changed for the better within the last few months. • Overall the Kern River Valley real estate market remains depressed, but we are seeing some "signs of life," as they say. Recently, the average sales price of a stick built home has ticked up in certain parts of the Valley. Kernville, Squirrel Valley and Bodfish have all seen recent sales that have been higher than the year before. Even though this is true, the majority of the sales for the year are about even with or under the sales price of transactions for 2010. • Another sign that the market
may be stabilizing on a local level is the fact that even though foreclosure properties are still coming up for sale in the Valley, the overall price of the foreclosures has increased slightly, and the amount of foreclosure properties hitting the market have gone down. Both of these factors are an indication that the local market is not yet going up, but is hitting a bottom, especially for stick built homes. However, this is unfortunately less than true for both manufactured/mobile homes and for vacant land and lot sales. Both of those categories of the market remain depressed, especially vacant land sales which over the past 24 months have been few and far between and the sale prices have been in some cases up to 80 percent less than the market high. This is due primarily to the fact that there is very little building here locally, so land and lots are sitting, which is common in extreme buyers’ markets. More on this topic next time. Merry Christmas all, have a great week and if you are looking for a place to buy, do it now before this market starts to recover, because there are some truly awesome deals out there right now!
