Instead of sending your old Christmas tree to the dump when you are finished with it, go green instead – donate it to the lake for fish habitat. Just bring it to the Kissack Bay parking lot, just west of Mt. Mesa. Be sure to tarp or cover your load or you may get a ticket. Also, remove all ornaments, tinsel, etc. Douglas E. Landon, Director of Kern County Waste Management, said, “Whole trees are used in wildlife habitat improvement projects by sinking them into the lake as a haven for small fish.” Volunteer workers will take the trees, wire them together and place them so that the rising lake this spring will cover them up. Then young fish can hide among the submerged branches to escape being eaten, thus growing into big, healthy fish.

Cemetery to be closed? Mike Devich Kern River Courier

As two new members, Jeanette Rogers and Ron Gillentine, join the Kern River Valley Public Cemetery District’s board of trustees, the district is considering some tough options – including closing the cemetery. The district is funded through tax approprations established in 1954, but the funding has never changed. Burial income is no longer sufficient. Cemetery manager Randy Kyt and the board of trustees recently met with Supervisor Jon McQuiston to discuss options, including applying for grants, but the step was made to contact Kern County Counsel to research the legalities of closing the cemetery and the handling of pre-need and endowment funds currently on hand. The KRV cemetery district is asking for tax-deductible donations. Mail to KRVPCD, P.O. Box 215, Wofford Heights CA 93285.

Tubatulabals want input to be considered The Tubatulabal tribe of American Indians has sent a letter to Col. William J. Leady, District Commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to ask for a consultation with agency representatives. They say they were never contacted by the Corps regarding the environmental assessment. The Tubatulabals of Kern Valley are asking that their historical maps and ethnographic studies be incorporated into the EA. They say that “there are many cultural sites downstream and upstream of the (dams) that will be impacted” by the dam repairs. The letter was signed by Dr. Donna Miranda-Begay, Tribal Chairwoman of the Tubatulabals of Kern Valley, and copies were sent to the Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other agencies and experts.

County calls board to declare disaster The Kern County Board of Supervisors will hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 4 p.m. to ratify a proclamation that recent heavy and prolonged rainfall has caused a flood disaster and state of emergency to exist within the County of Kern. At that time, the board is also scheduled to ratify a request for a gubernatorial disaster proclamation and a request for state disaster assistance.

Things I Have Noticed...

A special message Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist

I noticed it was getting close to Christmas. What made me notice? My first clue was the radio. It suddenly played nothing but sleighbell, mistletoe, and Santa songs. My next clue was the pages of wants from the greatMiddleworth grandchildren and the hints from the grandkids. A third clue was the smell of snickerdoodles, little fruitcakes, and cookies of every kind wafting from my wifes oven. Still another clue was the sudden lines of people at store counters and the parking lots full of cars, and folks loading them with stacks of Christmas giftss. It's a time when even the meanest humbug grump has a hint of smile in the corner of his grizzled face. It's a time to remember other Christmases and the images that come to mind as that special time of year approaches. It's when many of us think of others not so fortunate and hearts open to give some kind of help to those in need. The decorations on the houses, in the parks and around the shops are especially brilliant and cheerful. In the evening take a drive up the higher streets of Kernville, Wofford Heights, Bodfish or

Isabella and see the panorama of lights painting our valley. It’s breathtaking. Go up Hooper Hill, stop at a pullout and look out across the landscape of Lake Isabella. Note the lights of the Wofford Heights Christmas Tree. Feel the Christmas Season as we celebrate the birth of Christ. It's a time to renew old friendships, to have evening get-togethers. It’s time to hold dear the closeness of loved ones and to let others know that you care for them. It’s time to forget the bad stuff, to enjoy the moment and to share the joy of the Christmas season. This might be a good time to open up the e-mail file, the address book and the Christmas list and take today to call someone and give a special hello. Get out the cell phone and use up some of those minutes you've been hoarding. What better time, what better place than from your living room, as you reach out to someone out there in the somewhere. It’s Christmas in the Kern River Valley. Smell the air, savor the warmth, note the love, and revel in the cheer of the holiday spirit that surrounds us. Let Vicki and me wish you all a Merry Christmas and a splendid New Year. Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.

the first place. The city of Bakersfield has had major floods several times in its existence – until the dams were installed. It has been said that the dams saved Bakersfield from $10 million in damage in a big flood in 1966 that took out the Kernville bridge. That figure would surely be much higher today. Coincidentally, the dam safety siren had its usual weekly test on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., at the height of the flooding, causing some to think the dam had failed. The county was quick to reassure the public that had not happened. To find out if there are traffic restrictions on roads in and out of the valley, call the 1-800-GAS-ROAD CalTrans automated line and enter the highway number when prompted.

The KV Garden Group held a bake sale at the Lakeshore Lodge’s Farmer’s Market last Saturday as a benefit for Terri Gallion of Weldon. Gallion has a service dog, Jenna (shown above), who ingested some antifreeze and racked up some major vet bills. Gallion is disabled and lives on a fixed income, so the Garden Group went to work. The first person at the bake sale was a retired Marine living in Squirrel Valley who donated three crisp $100 bills. If all promised checks come in, all of the vet bills should be paid with some left over for some doggie treats for Jenna.

‘Machete’ a guy flick

Vanessa is accepted

Previews of new DVDs by DNA Smith New DVDs reviewed in this column will be available in stores the week of Jan. 6. PICKS OF THE WEEK "Machete" (R) -- "Machete" started out as nothing more than a fake trailer in the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino flick "Grindhouse." But fans of the film clamored for more, and so Rodriguez went ahead and made it into a feature-length "Mexsploitation" opus that will thrill any fan of lowbudget '70s drivein cinema. Danny Trejo stars as Machete, a former federal agent whose family was Danny Trejo murdered by a samurai sword-carrying drug lord (Steven Seagal). Machete is hired by a guy to assassinate an anti-immigration senator (played with scene-stealing relish by Robert De Niro). What follows is a series of hilariously over-the-top action set pieces and brilliant stunt casting (Don Johnson, Rose McGowan, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba and others make cameos). It's just an awesome series of hot chicks and stuff blowing up and cheesy dialogue that adds up to two hours of guilty-pleasure entertainment. If you liked "Grindhouse" or "From Dusk Til Dawn," you'll love "Machete." "Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends: Complete Series" (Unrated) -- Eighteen discs, 62 hours of fun from all five seasons, plus a slew of great special features and an 80-page book. Watch Rocky pull a rabbit out of his hat! AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN! See our heroes thwart the evil machinations of Boris and Natasha. Thrill as Mr. Peabody and Sherman travel through time in the Wayback Machine. Delight

That's what I'magonna do. "Howl" (R) -- James Franco delivers a riveting performance as legendary Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in this ambitious production chronicling the writing of, and obscenity trial surrounding, "Howl," his most famous poem. The film is broken up into segments: an interview with Ginsberg about the poem; his first public reading of the work; the trial; and the highlight of the film -- an animated interpretation of the entire poem. The supporting cast of Jon Hamm, Treat Williams, Mary-Louise Parker, David Strathairn and Bob Balaban give brilliant performances -- leaving us with the impression that they and the entire production were composing a love letter to a beloved literary work. Health Insurance Matters

Deadline coming up Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist

When Congress and then the regulators started the Medicare Advantage program, they established Nov. 15 to Dec. 31 as the dates for the Annual Harry Thal Enrollment Period (AEP). They must have forgotten that people have many other things to do this time of year. This same law required in October for insurance companies to send our required documentation telling about how your plan will change from the prior year. This, called the "Annual Notice of Change", has grown into a very thick, overwhelming mailing, with some companies weighing in to close to a pound! Who is going to read all that? A few weeks ago, I had a lady send me a list of her medications stating she would prefer to stay on her current plan, as she was very happy with it. I did the research anyway, to discover than of the three medications she is taking, none will be on the 2011 formulary for her plan. She would have paid about $20 more a month for a policy which covered none of her drugs! Time is running out. It is essential that people who have either a "stand alone" prescription drug plan (PDP)

or are part of either a Medicare HMO or PPO check their ANOC documents, and look up their medication in the 2011 plan formulary. If you don't have the formulary, call the company, go to their website or www.Medicare.gov and do your homework. If your medication has restrictions such as "Prior Authorization" or "Step Therapy" you may find it almost as close as not being on the formulary. Your physician will need to contact the company to get authorization to write the prescription. Without the authorization, your pharmacy will not fill the prescription at the insurance company's expense. Once it’s Jan. 1, it is all over. What you have is "locked in" for the entire 2011. People with a Medicare Advantage plan, in prior years had one additional opportunity to change from January to March 15, but the new health care laws eliminated that. Now from Jan. 1 to Feb. 15 you can leave the Medicare Advantage plan (HMO and PPO) and then go back on Original Medicare. You will have the ability to purchase a PDP plan, but must medically qualify if you want to get a Medicare Supplement to go with your Medicare. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker. He is President of the Kern Association of Health Underwriters and on the National Association of Health Underwriters Medicare Advisory Board. The “NORAD Tracks Santa” program began in 1955 after a phone call was made to the Continental Air Defense Command Operations Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The call was from a local youngster who dialed a misprinted telephone number in a local newspaper advertisement. The commander on duty who answered the phone that night gave the youngster the information requested – the whereabouts of Santa. This began the tradition of tracking Santa, a tradition that was carried on by NORAD when it was formed in 1958.
