Santa Sightings

Laughing all the way Santa arrived at the Lake Isabella Christmas parade last Saturday with elves Austin Bowman and Kyliee TerBeest in tow.

Courier Extra Nobody knows how he does it, but Santa will still be making appearances in the Kern Valley up until Christmas Eve. ■ Santa's debut will be at 3 p.m. at Circle Park atop the "Santallac."

Saturday, December 7th, with a gift run throughout Kernville.

■ He will be at "Santa's Village" in Circle Park on Wednesdays and Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 3 to 7 p.m. With more demand we may even see him more!

Season brings out area needs nearly 200 families with their Christmas dinner basket program consisting of all the fixings for a splendid Christmas dinner plus five to seven more meals. To help God's Storehouse, drop off your canned food donations at God's Storehouse 14432 Hwy 178, South Lake or next door at Frank's Tires.

There is also a drop off location at The Furniture Store in Lake Isabella. To get a list of the food items they are in most need of, contact them at 760-3782725 or 760-378-2880.

■ Be an Angel The Angel Gift Program is for children 11 to 18 years old, who are no longer eligible for "Toys for Tots" due to their age. "Angels" are placed on the KRV

■ God's Storehouse For over 25 years God's Storehouse has been blessing families with Christmas dinner baskets as well as supplemental food through our various programs for families, individuals and seniors. This year they anticipate serving

■ Food Pantry Your local Food Pantry is having a bake sale to raise the needed money to buy toys for their Christmas give-

Now that this part of the settlement has been reached, the Administrative Law Judge will issue a proposed decision to the Commissioners who will either adopt the

California Water Service Company, known as Cal Water, the California Public Utilities Commission's Office of Ratepayer Advocates and other involved parties have reached a tentative settlement agreement on the company's 2012 General Rate Case.

The Public Utilities Commission must approve the settlement agreement as part of the eighteen-month review process. If people

Residents Against Water-Rates, known as R.A.W., has been in negotiation with Cal Water Service, Office of Ratepayer Advocates, TURN, Kern County and advocacy intervener groups for other Cal Water districts over the past year. According to

R.A.W. spokesperson, Darlene Studdard, the group has saved the residents of the Kern Valley close to two million dollars in proposed capital improvements for the 2012 GRC. Cal Water proposed a 42 percent water rate increase but settled for a 26.9 percent water rate increase, which they say represents a savings of close to two million dollars.

Cerro Coso Community College Saddened by Loss Cerro Coso Community College is deeply saddened by the loss of Rev. Dr. Charles White. Known as Chuck to family and friends, he was the founding father of the Kern River Valley Education and Cultural Foundation in partnership with the late former Cerro Coso Dean, Clayton Witherow. A visionary leader with a compassionate heart, Chuck cared deeply about the people of the Kern River Valley.

"It has been a great privilege to have worked with Chuck in recent years," stated Cerro Coso President Jill Board. "Chuck was one of the most prominent and respected voices in support of education in the Kern River Valley. He strongly believed that higher education opens doors and opportunities to a better future. His leadership and support helped shape the KRVEC Foundation into what it is today. I will miss his tremendous contribution to the community, exemplary leadership, and dedication to the college."

The KRVEC Foundation is a vital support system for Cerro Coso's KRV students, providing valuable resources to help students complete their programs and succeed in their particular areas of study. Dr. White led with integrity and a strong commitment to academic excellence and student success. He was a trusted advisor and has been in the forefront as an advocate for the college.

We have lost not only one of the Foundation's founders and most faithful benefactors, but we have lost a most gifted leader whose success, generosity, service, integrity, and zest for life well lived should be an example for us all. Our hearts go out to his wife, Liz, and to the extended community of family and friends who held him dear.

I have noticed that as I get older, things are getting smaller. I don't think it has anything to do with my size or perception. I don't think Middleworth it has any think to do with my age. I am almost certain that there is a movement afoot to keep the price of things the same, but to make the product smaller. The result is that you get less for the same.

Some examples come to mind.

Kleenex, for instance. I don't have any old ...things are Kleenex to meassmaller... ure it by, but I am certain that there is less paper in each tissue that comes out of the box. I know that I am not blowing my nose any harder than I did as a younger person, but a good snort, usually blows a hole in the paper and makes containment of nose droppings difficult. I usually take two Kleenex sheets to do the job that one used to do.

Coffee is next on my list of things getting smaller. Do you remember when you went to the store to buy a pound of coffee??

Jell-O is another product that has changed the content, and the amount of product, and even raised the price, I am sure that they think we didn't notice!. In many boxed product there are large signs on the boxes that say it is new and improved. Does that mean we have been eating inferior stuff until now?

And who says it is getting new and what panel says it is - Middleworth improved.

No one has asked me and I have some really strong opinions.

That sends me off on another tangent on all kinds of things that have happened or are happening we are told that the public is either enraged or want justice. I'm the public and no one asks me or has ever asked me what I think or anyone else I know. Who are the knowledgeable folks that always know what to do and what we're mad about and that remains a mystery! Go figure!

Kern Valley Museum Artist of the Month Each month, in the Art Room at the Kern Valley Museum, the work of an outstanding artist from this area is displayed. This month's display is the work of Margaret Smith. Margaret has worked with oils and water colors and is now concentrating on painting using gourds. Her work has been influenced by the "Nuui Cunni" cultural center. Come by and see her work using gourds, along with dream catchers and pine needle work. It is a fabulous display. Magic, saints and the future

By Sam Struckhoff Pick of the Week “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” (PG-13) — Percy Jackson is the heroic son of Poseidon, the Greek sea god -and his human parent must be related to Harry Potter. In this sequel, Percy attends a magic training camp, where he drills alongside other magic teenagers.

(If that sounds too much like Potter, then just replace "magic" with "mythical," and you'll get the Percy Jackson flavor.) They need the same Magic Macguffin that the bad guys are after.

Eventually, Percy and his pals must brave a large body of water teeming with terrifying creatures.

Much like its predecessor, the movie serves as a flashy adventure that will thrill the kids without leaving much to remember. 2 eggs 3/4 c. milk 2 slices dried bread 2 tsp. salt 1 c. cheddar cheese, diced 1 onion, chopped 2 lb. ground turkey 1/4 c. catsup 1/4 c. brown sugar 1 tsp. mustard Bodfish Bob’s Turkey Buffet Casserole 4 oz. med. white noodles, (2 c.)

1 pkg. frozen broccoli spears 2 tbsp. butter or margarine 2 tbsp. flour 1 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. prepared mustard 1/4 tsp. pepper 2 c. milk 1 c. (1/4 lb.) grated American cheese 2 c. cut up cooked turkey 1/3 c. slivered toasted almonds Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In separate sauce pans cook noodles and broccoli as labels direct just until tender. In saucepan over low heat, melt butter; stir in flour, salt, mustard, pepper and milk. Cook, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat, stir in cheese until melted. Drain noodles and broccoli. Dice broccoli stems; leave flowerettes whole. Arrange noodles, broccoli stems, turkey in shallow casserole or 8 inch square baking dish; pour cheese sauce over all.

Arrange broccoli flowerettes on top, pressing them lightly into sauce; sprinkle with almonds. Bake uncovered 15 minutes or until bubbling hot.

Beat milk and eggs together, then mix in onion, bread and salt. Add cheese, catsup, brown sugar and mustard. Line loaf pan with wax paper. Put meat loaf mixture in pan and bake 1 hour at 350 degrees.

Bodfish Bob’s Turkey Hash 1 tbsp. canola oil, divided 1 lg. onion, chopped fine 2 c. cooked potatoes, cubed 2 to 2 1/2 c. cooked turkey, cubed 1/4 c. finely minced fresh parsley 2/3 c. chicken or turkey broth or leftover gravy Salt to taste Ground black pepper 1 1/2 tbsp. dry unseasoned bread crumbs 2 tbsp ketchup In non-stick skillet, heat 2 teaspoons of oil. Add onion, sauté over medium or low heat until onion begins to brown. Stir in potatoes, turkey and parsley. Season to taste. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Brush 9 to 10 inch round baking dish with oil and spoon in turkey mixture. Sprinkle with bread crumbs. Bake 30 to 40 minutes until top is brown. Serve with ketchup.

How to hire a good real estate agent Matt Freeman Courier Columnist Sometimes it is just hard to get good service. It seems like no matter where you go, how much you pay, or how much thought or research Freeman you put into the process, there are just some folks that do things more effectively than others. The real estate industry is no exception.

The fact is, some real estate agents are real go getters, who work hard for each of their clients and do their very best to provide the best customer service experience they possibly can. Other agents seem to struggle, just like any other profession.

Some agents are only part-time, and often a real estate agent in a slow market will work another job to help bring in some steady money giving them limited time to spend with clients. Others are new to the area or new to the industry and will struggle for a while with the nuances of their local market until they have a few transactions under their belt. Others, unfortunately, are just not motivated.

So how do you navigate the market to find yourself a good agent?

Here are simple tips and suggestions to help you find a great real estate agent that will work hard for you.

First, look for someone with local knowledge, who has lived in the area for a while. It is hard to sell something you know nothing about. Find

somebody that knows the local neighborhoods, the type of housing, the availability of land, the local customs and traditions of the area.

Second, look for an agent that has a good solid track record, who has solid experience and good sales numbers over time not just recently.

Better yet, look for an agent that sells a lot but is still able to take the time to address all of their clients’ concerns and needs without getting overwhelmed. I have seen good agents decline business before, or refer that business to another agent because they just don't have the time to effectively help their existing clients if they take more on.So look for thst type of person, someone who truly cares for you and wants to work hard for you.

Third and I believe most importantly, look for a real estate agent that has a good reputation in the community. Reputation, honesty, integrity and work ethic mean a whole lot in an agent. After all, you are hiring someone who is basically a stranger to be intimately involved with some of the most important monetary transactions in your life. Hire someone you are comfortable with, hire a company you are comfortable with, hire someone ready to work hard for you and not just see you as a paycheck, a very important distinction there.

3. Pay cash. Put the total from your budget in an envelope, and when the cash is gone stop spending. This will help keep you on budget because if you overspend on Aunt Sue, Uncle Harry won't get a gift!

4. Avoid debt. If you're running a little short on cash, talk to your family about spending expectations.

Draw names, set price limits or get creative. Whatever you do, don't go into debt. It's not worth it!

Dear Dave, I'm getting married soon, and we plan to open a joint checking account. Keeping a register accurately will be difficult because I travel two weeks out of every

month. Do you have any suggestions for keeping track of things, or should we just rely on online access to the account?

Ed Dear Ed, I would set up a second checking account, one to which you both have access, that's only for travel.

Giving you both access allows you to track what you do and her to see what's going on and act as your backup when it comes time to balance the register.

Here's an example. A few years ago we were remodeling our home.

My wife and I opened a separate checking account and put all of our remodeling money in there. It was easier to keep the money separate, but we both had access and were involved in the account.

Understand, this wasn't a "his" and "hers" arrangement. It was merely for the purposes of keeping our everyday activities separate from the remodeling budget. When you get married the preacher proclaims you as one. That means throughout life and everything involved, including your finances!

the proposed settlement allows KRV residents the increased average CCF usage from seven CCFs to ten CCFs, which will allow residents to use more water for less money since the greater CCF allowance will offset the WRAM charges. Studdard believes that the Kern Valley will be able to enjoy three extra CCFs of water usage for half price. But Studdard warns KRV residents using over ten CCF water use per month will pay full price for excess water usage over the allowed ten CCF. Studdard also noted that service charges were also addressed in negotiations and will go down slowly over the next four General Rate Cases unless the ALJ Judge rules otherwise.
