Kern River Youth Outreach recognized U.S. Forest Service Special to the Courier The Kern River Ranger District has won the Engaging Youth category of the first Pacific Southwest (Region 5) Regional Forester’s Honor Awards. Regional Forester Randy Moore presented the award to representatives of the Kern River Ranger District at a Forest Service function in Sacramento on Nov. 30. District Ranger Rick Larson said, “I am very proud of the planning and extra effort my staff and their folks on the ground put into all the events that educate these young minds on what the Forest is, all the gifts it offers, and how important it is we, as individuals and as a nation, continue taking care of it.” Deputy District Ranger Brenda Ehmann added “We will continue our youth education programs into the future, and are honored that these efforts are

regionally recognized.” The Community Service Program has continued for 18 years in cooperation with Kern River Outfitters and the South Fork Middle School to teach students citizenship in the laboratory of their own backyard. District firefighters, resource personnel and recreation staff use events such as the Kern County Fair, Kids’ Fishing Derby, Junior Pheasant Hunt and the Turkey Vulture Festival to educate thousands of children. Region 5 created the awards program to pay special tribute to those who demonstrated outstanding professionalism, excellent customer service, and exemplary leadership in advancing the Forest Service mission. “Many accomplishments achieved during 2011 are the result of the dedication, hard work, and commitment of all our Forest Service employees,” Moore said. Region 5 cares for more than 20 million acres including 18 National Forests in California and the Pacific Islands.

Kern River Courier This is the year to make a local differance, giving gifts of genuine concern for the local community. With many small businesses’ financial lives on the line due to a poor economy, it’s time to think outside the box. Everyone gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local hair salon or barber? Or give a gym membership? It’s appropriate for anyone looking at health improvement. Who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car detailed or oil changed? And the local merchant would love to sell you a gift certificate. Perhaps the grateful receiver would like going out to see a movie at the hometown theater? Or play a game at the local bowling alley or golf course? There are many owner-run restaurants, and they all offer gift certificates. What about a couple of meals at the local diner? Remember, when we care about our local communities, the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn’t imagine.

Malone Continued from page 1 Army Air Corps during World War II, serving in Okinawa, Japan, where he contracted a parasite which affected his health for the rest of his life. Harvey worked for Southern California Edison, Hydro Division, from 1946 to 1983. He developed procedure manuals for power plant operations. He was also a Kern Valley VFW charter member. Remembered for his ability to pitch softball, his career was lengthy. He pitched until he was 57 years old, when others would run the bases for him and they called him "grandpa." Harvey could pitch an 80 to 90 mile an hour ball and was scouted by professional teams. But his career with Edison had started and it seemed more stable to him to pass on baseball. He played with

the Kernville Merchants, who were known as the areas most winning team. He volunteered at the Kern Valley museum where he was well known for his story telling. He was known to make up a story if he did not know the answer to a question. He also volunteered at the Indian culture center, and Fish Hatchery. He affected many lives, old and young, always dedicating his time. Harvey was a people-magnet. Harvey was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandpa, and friend. He was gentle, the kind of guy you meet and want to get to know better. Services by Sierra Valley Mortuary were held on December 2 at the Family Life Center in Wofford Heights, officiated by Tom McKinney. The graveside service included a military salute and ended with a traditional Native American ceremony.

In a large saucepan, combine turkey, carrots, celery, onion, bay leaves and thyme. Pour over chicken broth and set pan over high heat. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and simmer five minutes, until liquid reduces slightly. Remove bay leaves. Remove from heat and stir in peas. Transfer turkey mixture to a deepdish pie plate or shallow casserole

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 10-to-11-inch spring form pan with cooking spray and set side. In a medium bowl, combine sugar, pumpkin pie spice and pecans. Stir until everything is well combined. Lightly flour a surface and roll out both pieces of pizza dough, side by side. Brush each piece of dough with melted butter. Sprinkle sugar/pecan mixture over each of the pieces of dough, leaving a 1- inch border around the edge. Roll up both pieces of dough into a log, jelly-roll style. Trim off the ends of each roll to make them neat, and then cut each roll into about 15 (1 inch pieces). Place each piece of dough side by side in concentric circles into the prepared pan. Courier Antler, Fin & Feather Report

Celebrating two years of writing Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier Columnist This month I’m celebrating my second anniversary penning this column. I would like to thank the owner and the staff of the Courier for the opportunity, and the free hand forMencarini mat they have allowed me. As important as the newspaper is to our community, without you, the readers, and the merchants that advertise faithfully every week, and to those of you who read my column. I would like to express my gratitude, and thanks for your support. As a matter of fact all of us at the Courier thank you for your support. According to the Department of Fish & Game website, there will be no planting in the Kern River this week. My guess is the water temperature in the river is below the

criteria. I am sure the river still has lots of fish for those who seek them. The farther up river you go, you will find less pressure on the fish. The trout bite from the shore is heating up with nice fish being caught at Camp Nine, Boulder Gulch and French Gulch on this side of the lake which means the south side should be good also. The only info I have on crappie is the marina at French Gulch in 30 or so feet of water. The bass action started to heat up this week as the “Fishing Father” scored a 6 ¾ and a 5 ¾ this week. Nice fish, PastorJames. As the holiday shopping season is in full swing, I would ask you to spend as much as possible in your community. The local merchants do appreciate your business.

ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) You don't like anyone trying to take charge of one of your projects, but try to be a bit more flexible. A new idea could help hasten a positive result. TAURUS (Apr. 20 to May 20) You’ve probably done much of your holiday shopping. But don’t relax yet. Wrap those gifts now to save yourself lots of unwanted pressure. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be receptive when a family member or friend asks to confide in you. Your positive reaction could ensure that they will have a happy holiday experience. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Don’t be rushed into wrapping up that workplace problem. Consider leaving it until after the holidays. This way you’ll have the facts you need. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) You’ll get news that will make you happy. Be sure to use what you learn both carefully and kindly, to avoid giving the wrong impression. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) That frayed relationship could be mended in time for the holidays if you are more flexible. Give a little, and you could get back a lot more than you imagined. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Things might not

seem to be settling down as quickly as you would prefer. But it might be just a little holiday time flutter. You'll soon get news that will lead to more stability. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Stop getting so involved in everyone’s personal problems that you lose precious time with loved ones. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) All signs point to a bright holiday, with all of those pesky problems finally resolved in your favor. Share the good times with people you love and, of course, who love you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Your plans should not be set in stone and cemented over. Leave some openings in case you need to make changes. Spend the holidays with your nearest and dearest. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) This holiday finds you on the receiving end of the generosity of those who are usually the recipients of so much that you give so freely and lovingly. PISCES (Feb. 19 to Mar. 20) That piece of good news assures that you’ll be swimming in clearer, calmer waters this holiday season. There might be a storm or two ahead, but you’ll weather it all in fine style. © 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Living Green

Talking About Real Estate

May all your Christmas lights be green

Keep those utilities on

Light Emitting Diode (LED) holiday lights are a best bet this year. They are more available and in an astounding variety at very good prices locally and when you Rowe visit the “Big Box Stores” in Bakersfield. Big bulbs, small bulbs, colored bulbs, white bulbs: LED Christmas lights come in a wide variety of styles, so there’s truly something for everyone. You can even find snowflake-shaped lights, rope lights and net lights. I didn’t even see the old-fashioned, big incandescent glass bulb Christmas lights available at some places I checked earlier this year. No wonder! LED lights use just one-tenth the energy that the old lights did. And they last 10 times longer too. Most LED sets are rated at least 50,000 or more hours. So you are a lot less likely to lose the whole set when one bulb burns out. Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric and other utilities are starting to offer free sets of LED lights for trade-ins from the older type inefficient lights.

Mesa 760-379-2681

Another big reason to go LED for holiday lights is safety. The National Fire Protection Association says 30 percent of all home fires and 38 percent of home fire deaths occur during December, January and February. Christmas tree and holiday decoration fires result in twice the number of injuries and five times more fatalities per fire than the average winter holiday fire. On average, 260 home fires begin with Christmas trees each year, resulting in 12 deaths, 24 injuries and $16.4 million in property damage. A recent survey found that 42 percent already use LED holiday lights; another 42 percent are thinking about it. Just 12 percent of people don’t bother to consider changing. Maybe that 12 percent are holdouts who love those bubbling candle lights. Online, I found a set of five multi-changing color LED battery Christmas mega 6-inch bubble lights that use two D-cell batteries but they were almost $25 a set. Maybe next year, there will be less expensive and more clever LED bubble lights more in my price range. Richard Rowe is a retired city planner living in Wofford Heights. We all know the best way for a property to sell is for the property to “sell" itself.” First impressions are everything, especially in a market where buyers are calling so Freeman many of the shots -- like right now. A first impression can make or break when it comes to a sale. Oftentimes that first impression on a home is sorely lacking if utilities are not left on by a seller. Yeah, I know, it costs money. But a cheap utility bill each month or a sold home -- which is better in the long run? When buyers and Realtors walk into a house in the summertime and it is hot, stale and smelly it’s hard to sell that home. Here are some tips to help that home sell in the summer or winter and keep those utility costs down at the same time. • Keep the thermostat set at 80 degrees in the summer and 60 in the winter. Those are comfortable enough temperatures and it won’t cost much in utility use. Even better, put the

AC or coolers and the furnace on a timer to only maintain those temps during regular showing hours. • Keep the lights on at night. Put them on a timer. Just a couple of fluorescent bulbs at night makes the place look occupied and helps keep the property both safe and inviting. • Keep the water on as well. I know the idea of a person using your bathroom that you don’t know is kinda weird and it takes some trust, but often times the call of nature necessitates bathroom availability. Also, to demostrate the kitchen and baths, the facets needs to be turned off and on. I once sold a house that way. The people bought the place just because it showed well and all services were on. • Have someone check the place out every now and then. That person should be the listing agent of the property as the seller is paying them to list the place. They should come by at least every couple of weeks to make sure all is well. As Realtors, that is the least we can do: have respect for the folks that we represent. Matt Freeman, #01714782, is a Realtor with Freeman’s Lakeside Realty.
