Special to the Courier Next month will mark the first year of operation of the Kern Valley "Safe Spot", a grass-roots program launched by community leaders after a rash of teen suicides.

Experts say such suicides are often “Safe Spot” the result of bullying window sign and harassment.

The Safe Spot Program has so far attracted sixteen local businesses who have pledged to provide a "safe spot" for people of all ages who believe they are at risk for bullying or other crimes.

The group created a logo which participating businesses place at their entrance. "It lets people know that business is a safe spot to go in time of perceived danger," said Jason Houston, a civil and family court mediator.

The next SSP training is scheduled for Monday, March 5 at 6 p.m. in Lake Isabella.

The "Screaming Mimi," helicopter that was used in the TV action series Riptide (1984-1986) was called into action this past week for a Southern Califoria Edison pole replacement project.

Riptide was about two Vietnam buddies who become private investigators.

The show co-starred Joe Penny as Nick, the pilot of "Screaming Mimi," an old Sikorsky S-58T helicopter. Painted pink with a garish mouth on front, it was the shabby, unreliable US Army surplus part of the show.

Southern California Edison sent out notices to Riverkern residents about planned power outages that began February 3 for the replacement of poles. Eight wooden poles were replaced with galvanized steel poles last Friday between the KR3 Power Plant and the Kernville Substation as part of scheduled capital maintenance.

"The project will improve system reliability," said Cal Rossi, SCE East San Joaquin Regional Manager. The plan is to replace seven more poles in March.

According to the notice, Edison says that planned power outages give the utility opportunity to complete ongoing maintenance and upgrade the grid with new materials and technologies.

Edison says it is part of their long term plan to help revitalize Southern California's power grid.

Summit Helicopters Inc. of Pacoima, CA, that does aerial crane and firefighting work was contracted for the project. Summit Helicopters has been assisting Southern California Edison since 2007 when they were called into service during the Santa Catalina Island fire where helicopters were used to bring in and replace burned poles.

Edison also states that they use the opportunity to install smart grid technology that makes the power grid better able to handle the increasing demand that a growing population requires. According to Edison, "a smart grid moves electricity around the nation more efficiently. It draws intelligence from millions of technology components embedded in our generation, transmission, storage, and distribution systems, and it communicates in an ongoing flow of real-time information. With its advanced monitoring and control capabilities, the smart grid can identify problems instantly, and route electricity around them. In other

Lakeshore Farmers Market, February 11 The Lakeshore Farmers Market is holding a Grant Money Bake Sale on Saturday, Feb. 11 to raise money for a grant program for local entrepreneurs.

Grants will be awarded to local residents who can prove they have the skills to start up a small business associated with a farmers market, but do not have the funds to pay for permits. The Kern Valley Growers Association, which operates the Farmers Market, will guide approved participants through the permit process with Kern County Environmental Health, and use the bake sale proceeds to cover permit fees. The Market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This Market features locally grown certified fruit, produce, eggs and honey, along with certified organic produce. No such critter as ‘Dark Sky Ordinance’ I keep seeing references to “Kern County’s Dark Sky Ordinance” and about it being passed Nov. 8. I am a stickler about the truth, and the truth is: there is no such critter. Not only is there a need for one, it seems we need a Veracity League as well.

What was passed was a most sorry set of revisions to the zoning rules and regulations that will only increase troubles and costs to taxpayers and home owners. It will not reduce existing or future light trespass by one photon. It is actually anti-green, anti-property rights and struck out the few protections already in code.

Additionally the revision codified exclusions, exceptions and exemptions that take the cause for Dark Skies backwards, not forward. I will gladly debate anyone on this but they know better. They take potshots through newspapers that will not allow a response. If there was a workable ordinance why does the Museum’s astronomy club go out of county for its star parties and why does a fellow claiming to have worked on the zoning change and living in this county use tourism websites to promote those out of county tours?

My photos of Local Dark Skies were used in newspapers locally since 2001 (“Meteor Shower Over The Canebrake”) and the 2007 Comet Photo in your paper. I would be doing handstands in Circle Park if we had protected skies.

Evolution weekend in the KRV Kernville United Methodist Church will join with hundreds of congregations from 10 countries and discuss the compatibility of religion and science.

Chuck White, in response to an invitation to preach during Evolution Weekend, on Sunday, February 12, is bringing a sermon entitled "Evolution and interfaith dialogue: both contribute to a contemporary Christian life of faith." All those who are interested in a positive understanding of the relationship between religion and science, and in particular evolution are invited to the 9:30 a.m. worship service at Kernville United Methodist.

Volunteers jump into icy waters for a good cause Next month volunteers will once again plunge into the arctic waters of the South Fork Middle School pool to benefit this summer’s Kern Valley Aquatics Program. Last winter, several hardy souls dressed in costume or just in swimsuits and braved the chilly water. This year, the program is looking for more folks from the community to jump in and help raise money to provide swim lessons, a summer safe camp and Junior Lifeguard camp opportunities for the Valley’s youth.

You must bring in at least $25 in order to join the plungers. You can do the plunge yourself, or create a team with your family, friends or co-workers. If you choose to wear a costume, it must be appropriate. The event takes place on Saturday, March 10 at 10 a.m. The water will probably be close to what it is now -- a bone-chilling 42 degrees. Prizes will be awarded for best costume, most money raised and for someone foolhardy enough to swim the entire length of the pool.

McCarthy accepting internship applications Congressman Kevin McCarthy announced he is accepting internship applications for his Summer Internship Program.

Summer Internship applicants must possess good writing and computer skills, be enrolled in college or recently graduated, and should have a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Preference will be given to residents of California’s 22nd Congressional District (which includes most of Kern and San Luis Obispo counties and part of Los Angeles County). However, all applications will be considered. Summer interns are responsible for their expenses, including transportation and lodging costs, but will receive a $1,500 stipend, before taxes. The summer internship program will be an 8week session; interns typically spend two weeks in the Bakersfield or Atascadero district office followed by six weeks in Washington, D.C. Things I Have Noticed...

Hole in the Ground Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist It was 1973 and almost Christmas in Delano.

The wife of my best friend, Gerry, the city manager, asked me to hide and store the Honda Trail 90 that she had bought as a Christmas pres- Middleworth ent for him.

She asked me to ride it a bit and make sure everything was working and I did. After that first ride I wanted one. So much so, that a month after I took that ride I bought a Honda Trail 90 for myself, and one for my son Glenn.

A few months later, Glenn, Gerry and I decided to trail ride to the high country for a weekend of camping. We invited the Bank of America manager, Jim, to ride with us on his trail 90 which he had won in a Chamber of 'Commerce contest, but had yet to ride any appreciable distance.

We loaded Jim’s bike with all the food, and ours with the fishing poles, tents, spare parts, warm clothes and a first aid kit. We followed an old trail, using an ancient map to get to a place next to the Kern River called Hole in the Ground. Getting there meant going up steep, steep hills and down canyons.

Because Jim was such a neophyte, he kept falling over and run-

ning into rocks and bushes. We finally got to Hole in the Ground late Friday afternoon. Looking around, we began to appreciate the beauty of where we were and the fun we had getting there. All of us except for Jim, who had bruises and scratches all over his body from his various trail wrecks.

We caught a few fish, but only stayed one day, leaving early because Jim had ruined or lost much of our food during his crashes.

As we were riding out, we realized again that we were missing Jim. So we stopped, shut off our motors and waited.

Faintly we heard him coming down the trail getting closer.

Suddenly, there was a crash, followed by silence and then multiple curse words.

Jim had ridden off the trail into a manzineta bush. We ran back to help him and laughed while we got him out of the manzineta and back on the trail and eventually home.

Jim sold his battered Honda not long after, and wouldn’t talk to us for a month. He said he was disappointed that we laughed at him in his time of distress.

Eventually he forgave us but never rode any kind of a motorcycle again. It’s been 39 years since that trip, but for us the memory remains of the “Hole in the Ground Caper.”

By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “Puss in Boots” (PG) — Before you throw this one into the heap with the Shrek sequels, know that this could, by all accounts, be considered a successful spinoff. Antonio Banderas returns to voice the titular Puss, the suave, swashbuckling cat who eventually befriends Shrek. This story focuses on his background, so the supporting cast and sagging quality of the Shrek franchise is thankfully absent, clearing the way for family fun with a talking, dancing, sword-fighting cat.

There isn’t one of those timeless Pixar-style narratives, but Puss makes for a fine animated adventure. Humpty Dumpty (voiced by Zach Galifinakis) plays the cat’s bumbling co-conspirator, and Selma Hayek voices Softpaws, a fellow cat/thief who runs with idea of a feline femme fatale.

“J. Edgar” (R) — This bloated biopic comes off as more of a dispassionate history lesson than a delving portrait of an enigmatic figure. Directed by Clint Eastwood with Leonard DiCaprio in the leading role, the film follows J. Edgar Hoover from his early 20s until he’s way past 70, mostly focusing on his career. The performers labor under heavy servings of age-makeup, but there’s little payoff in the long story

There are hints and little teasers of the personal drama of Hoover — whom people still argue about to this day — but no revelations.

Hoover’s career is meaty enough to fuel a whole film, but Eastwood uses bits of Hoover’s personal life to propel the drama, only to jump back to career highlights before anything comes to a head.

“Martha Marcy May Marlene” (R) — Newcomer Elizabeth Olsen plays Martha in this psychological thriller about a young woman who recently escaped a dangerous cult.

Olsen’s performance hits the mark, as Martha’s paranoia and trauma keep her a complicated character.

Then those who feared the Lord spoke with one another.

The Lord paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name. "They shall be mine," says the Lord of hosts, "in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will

spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. Then once more you shall see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him." Malachi 3:1318.

Of those eight times the particular word variously translated as jewels and treasured possession, here are three: Deuteronomy 7:6 KJV: "For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth"; Psalm 135:4 KJV: "For the Lord hath chosen Jacob unto himself, and Israel for his peculiar treasure"; and Ecclesiastes 2:8 KJV: "I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts."

Those who fear the Lord today are blessed and counted,

by God as His jewels, His treasured possessions.

"For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?"

It is paralyzing to our faith when we attempt to compare and contrast ourselves to the supposed experience of those around us. Yet we measure ourselves by what we think we see in others, and in so doing, cripple the effect that faith is intended to have on what the Lord is working in us.

Some comparisons seem to let us off the hook, as what appears to be weakness in another brings an illusion of strength to our own experience. Other comparisons leave us feeling small and insignificant as we shrink underneath the magnificence of other pillars of faith. Whatever the outcome, we err in this approach to spirituality, and ought rather to look longingly into the Word of life that is able to bring real freedom to our souls, and work powerfully and eternally within our spirits.

Just about every glance we take at what we believe are the expectations of the Christian life, all draw the

same conclusions: Impossible!

So we relegate our own perceived failures to be all we think the Father requires to alleviating our guilt through trying harder, or finding comparisons to others that will make us feel better.

Of course when we do resort to comparisons, this often leads to a worsening of our condition when we fall under the unintended shadow of someone outstripping our own spirituality. So why not rather simply take the Word as the heart of the Father revealed to us, and embrace truth that is intended to set us free?

In Jesus, we have died to the penalty of the law! The beauty in Christ-likeness is in its simplicity, and while the application might be a lifetime in the perfecting, the message of merciful grace is applied to our lives in unswerving diligence by the Holy Spirit. We don’t need to try harder, for serving the Lord in “newness of the Spirit” reveals a willingness of the Holy Spirit to bring about the Father’s image deep in our hearts. Comparisons too are fruitless as we are each on an individual journey and each on personal timetables that make comparisons moot.

Taking the word of the Lord to us that 2012 is a year of “faith filled embrace,” we can be encouraged to hold fast to the Father’s love and promise to us, and grow into the people of faith we are called to be.

Don’t fall for same as cash offers

Why isn’t my medication covered?

David Ramsey Kern River Courier Columnist Dear Dave, My wife and I bought some furniture a while back on what we thought was a 24months-same-ascash plan. The original purchase price was $1,600.

The other day, I Ramsey got a call from a collector saying that it was actually a 12-month plan, and the balance is now $2,800. We looked at the contract, and it was our mistake on the length of the plan. Still, that makes the interest rate about 30 percent. Is there anything we can do about this? Robert Dear Robert, This is one of the reasons I tell people to stay away from “same as cash” agreements. You may not have agreed to a specific percentage rate, and I’ll bet it’s something less when you factor in the time before and after the 12month period ended. When you signed the contract you probably did agree to have this thing convert to a financed contract if you didn’t pay it off in 12 months. These kinds of deals are really scummy. Not only have they charged you interest since the 12month period ended, they’ve also back-charged you interest for the entire length of the contract!

These same-as-cash contracts are designed to mess you over big time.

You can try to dispute it, but I've got a feeling you'll lose and have to pay

about $1,200 in stupid tax on this one.

Lots of people think they can pull one over on a company with the “same as cash” deal, but stuff almost always comes up, even if you don’t misread the contract. I’ve said it a million times, Robert, If you play with snakes, you will be bitten!

Dennis Dear Dennis, I don't know if there's necessarily a specific percentage for this kind of thing. Since you guys are already debtfree you need to make sure that you've got a fully-loaded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in place, along with retirement funding.

In your case, anything else you have sitting around is simply wealth. If you've got $50,000 sitting in a savings account in addition to these things, and you'd rather have $50,000 worth of dirt instead of a bank account, I'm cool with that. It's really more a matter of ratios than percentages.

An interesting fax, with a telehone call followup came in this week.

John has been taking Uroxatral, a drug that helps reduce the swelling of the Thal prostate. He received a letter from the insurance company advising him that he was allowed to refill his prescription this time, but the medication is not on the plan’s formulary (list of approved drugs) and he should talk to his doctor.

Plans are allowed and do revise their formularies each year. By law, if you refill a prescription in the first 90 days of the year, the insurance plan must provide you with a 30-day supply to transition.

As John’s insurance agent, I researched alternative medications in the same drug classification, and was able to suggest three medications which were on his plan’s formulary. While the Uroxatral would cost him $141.61 if he continued to buy it without the insurance coverage, the three alternatives have a co-pay of $0 at certain “preferred” pharmacies, or no more than $7 at “participating” pharmacies on his insurance plan.

If no other drug will work for his situation, or if we learn that

other medications had either adverse side effects or didn’t resolve his problem, there is a process to get coverage in what is called a “formulary exception.”

Each insurance plan has its own forms which are available online.

The physician must complete it and fax to the company, and they must respond back within a few days maximum. An expedited response is in the law for emergency situations.

When you do the math, John wants to know why his drug is so much more expensive. I told him that it takes a brand name drug.

The pharmaceutical company has representatives talking to doctors and distributing free samples to get people started on the medication. Generic companies do not market their product that way, but offer a much lower price point. It is often advisable to discuss with your physician alternatives.

Perhaps there is a lower priced medication which will reduce your cost, and even save the insurance company money. That in return keeps the monthly premiums down.
