If you only have time to partake of one event on your visit to Whiskey Flat you’ll want to be sure to stop by the Encampment across from the rodeo grounds this weekend. The camp is expected to have more than 100 reenactors, 30 horses and many period structures erected just for this event. The Whiskey Flat Encampment is comprised of separate camp groupings: a C o w b o y Camp, the Mountain Man Camp, the Indian Camp, Miners Camp, and new this year is a Mounted Civil War Confederate Unit from Fort Tejon, the 1st North Carolina Calvary. The Camp opens to the public at noon on Friday and Saturday and 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. The reenactors can be seen participating in the parade Saturday morning. The Encampment features many period correct interactive events for the public, that will include ax throwing at the Mountain Camp; bow and arrow shooting at the Indian Camp; mining and sawmill demonstrations at the Miners’ camp; Old Whiskey Flat stories and gun fights around the Cowboy Camp. A special treat for the public is a real old-fashioned outdoor church service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, with circuit rider Jesse Lee Bennett presiding. The Encampment was originally produced to add authenticity to Whiskey Flat Days and to educate the public as to what this Valley was like 150 years ago, giving them a first -person glimpse of what life was really like. Much of the gunfight routines are taken from historian and book

author Bob Powers and other stories of the Kern River Valley. This is the ninth year for the encampment and they are gearing up for a 10th anniversary producing Whiskey Flat Encampments for next year. “This is our "dress rehearsal for next year,” said Mike Woodward, Encampment coordinator. “So we hope the word will get out that everyone needs to visit the camp and enjoy the action. This will be a Whisky Flat Encampment to remember.”

Things I Have Noticed...
So long, old pal Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist Last week there was a memorial service for Glen Smith, a good friend of ours. He was the hardest working man I ever knew. Whatever Glen did, he kept at it Middleworth until it was done. He owned a mobilhome park and several of the units he completely refurbished. He rebuilt a Bed and Breakfast on the road to Johnsondale. It was a disaster when he bought it and a beautiful inn when he sold it. Most of you remember the McNally fire a few years back. That fire swept up and over the mountain to the south of Glen’s units. The fire parted and swept by on each side of his property and continued up the hill above him for several thousand acres. But the flames and heat melted the uphill tank that furnished water for his B&B. Shortly after the fire, Glen stopped by my house with a 1,000gallon water tank that he had scrounged from someplace. He asked for the help of Jim Whiteman myself and a third party whose name escapes me We met the next day on Mountain 99 about a quarter of a mile up from the B&B. From the road, the tank and trailer would have to be released down the hill about 100 yards. The
highway had been closed to traffic, so using the whole road, we put a pulley and rope on one of the trucks. Then we hooked the other end to the trailer and slipped it over the side to let it creep down the hill. We signaled Glen, who had hooked the rope through a pulley on one vehicle and fastened the end to his truck. Suddenly, the CHP arrived along with the Forest Service and the Sheriff’s and Road Departments. They had reopened the road and we were blocking the way. The CHP wanted us to leave the trailer down where it was so they could release traffic. But silvertongued Glen sweet-talked the officer in giving us five more minutes to get it done. We finally got the trailer up the hill and fastened to Glen’s truck. As he drove off we noticed the trailer had no licence, no taillights and no safety chain. But down the hill went Glen, lickety split, to park it out of sight (just in case). Over the years there were lots of things like this for Glen to overcome and he always did. He kept track of all the bad stuff he encountered and fixed, in a red note book. Glen is gone now and we’ll miss him. There is but one page left in the red book and we’ll fill it in as we say goodbye to an old friend, husband and father. So long old Pal! ‘Hugo’ is 3-D success By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “Hugo” (PG ) — Underneath an elaborate and awe-inspiring look, fine machinery powers this adventure with a love of cinema. Martin Scorsese’s first foray into 3-D movies shows that the right filmmaker can make the technology more than a gimmick. At the hometheater, where 3-D equipment hasn’t quite saturated the market, “Hugo” still holds up as a dazzling journey with a heartfelt story. Asa Butterfield plays Hugo, a young boy in 1930s Paris who is fascinated with clockwork. His late father (Jude Law in the flashbacks) left him a mysterious gizmo that he’s determined to understand. While looking for clues, Hugo must enlist the help of a toyshop owner (Ben Kingsley) and outwit the bumbling station inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen). The script can move slowly in the beginning, but it’s well worth the patience to see where the movie goes once the gears start spinning. “The Myth of the American Sleepover” — The title may fool you into thinking this is a teen sex romp, but while adolescent longings are at the heart of the film, it’s more “American Graffiti” than “American Pie.” The story follows the intersecting stories of suburban
Director Martin Scorsese’s cameo in “Hugo” youngsters on the last day of summer. “Sleepover” manages to take the audience back to that teen mindset when every action and waking thought seems just on the edge of something profound. “How the Universe Works” — Starting with the big bang and delving all the way into dark-matter, anti-matter and supernovas, this Science Channel set narrated by Mike Rowe is a solid fix for anybody who wants to look through a telescope and see more than just dots. With wondrous visuals and a whole host of experts (including a “black-hole hunter”), popping in one of these discs is a reliable way to relax while massaging your brain with the mysteries of the cosmos. © 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Courier Antler, Fin & Feather Report
Plenty to keep the sportsman busy Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier Columnist Well, Whiskey Flat Days is upon us and only a week away from the Central Valley California Sports and RV show at the fairgrounds in Bakersfield. Also, the Isabella Lake Fishing Derby is Mencarini in six weeks. So there are quite a few events to keep us busy and by the time they’re in our rear-view mirror, Spring will be here again. Isabella Lake has been in a stable environment pattern for the better part of three months. Let me explain. So far, there has been no excessive rain to raise the lake’s water level in large increments. The day and night temperatures have been above normal, which has raised the lake’s temperature a couple of degrees. The snow pack above us has not had many periods of snow and melt prior to the normal spring melt, which lowers the river temperature, which in turn lowers the lake temperature. Might I remind you that by this time last year the December rains had raised the lake to about twothirds capacity.
The reason for laying out these scenarios is to explain that the lake is primed for an exceptional year of fishing. I am not a biologist, but these conditions, along with the heavy feeding on the shad by both fin and feather are further proof of positive lake conditions. The shoreline anglers are catching lots of trout and really nice ones too, as they get the trout to shore they are belching shad. On Sunday, I caught some really nice crappie at the docks. Along with being full of eggs, they were also belching shad. The fellow fishing next to me caught a poundand-a-half catfish, and we were both amazed about how fat it was. In fact, I expected it to explode! Let’s collectively cross our fingers and if you pray, say a little one. Those prayers also help so these conditions don’t change drastically. If they don’t, expect the big bass to start the spawn at the end of this month. The crappie will be right behind the bass. We shore anglers should be able to fish for crappie in our usually hot spots this year. Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and a volunteer at the Kern River Fish Hatchery. For questions or comments you can reach him through the Kern River Courier, office@kernrivercourier .com.

Being without words while feeling pressure to speak invokes sudden anxiety. At the The Transfiguration, Peter said, "Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three Semonious tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." (Mark 9:5). Except for verse 6, scholars would be writing volumes: "For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified." My question is not how, but why did God put on that display for Peter and James and John? Why was it included in Scripture? I love the concept of being changed by God. I love the passage in John 3:1-21. It speaks of being born again; of becoming a

new creation. The word, "transfigured" which is in Greek, metamorphoo combines the two words, "change" and "form," a deep and fundamental process is described. One illustration of the process, I learned in a song as a child. "Bullfrogs and Butterflies, They've Both Been BornAgain," written in 1929 by Albert E. Brumley. I knew the song spoke of tadpoles and caterpillars being born again. Since change is hard and scary, the song helps me prepare to be developed in a way I've never imagined. If I am not conformed to the pattern of this world, but by metamorphosis, the renewing of my mind, I will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will (To paraphrase Romans 12:2). I think that, first of all, the Transfiguration was included to give a glimpse of a time that was expressed by these lyrics: Some glad morning when this life is o'er, I'll fly away; to a home on God's celestial shore, I'll fly away.

Jack Duitsman, Pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instrucDuitsman tion, that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. – Romans 15:4 It is an axiom of life that choices really do matter. There is a definite cause effect aspect of our experience that brings with it the power of positive choice, and our willingness to embrace the Scriptures on a disciplined basis brings this truth to light. The above passage proclaims this encouragement as the promise of the Father to us, and then awaits our choice to bring fulfillment to pass. Consider with me the following ways the Word impacts us: The Written Word - This is the promise of the Father to work encouragement. In the willingness to spend time in the eternal Word, we are allowing the Holy Spirit to strengthen our inner being for what life has brought us as well as what lies on the horizons of our experience. Understood or not, seemingly applicable or not, the time spent in the word is a choice that pays dividends of encouragement and hope as noted in the above passage from
the epistle to the Romans. The Spoken Word - The profound nature of the preached Word ought never to be taken for granted or minimized. A thirty minute sermon does not become the Word, but the proclamation of truth that expounds, explains, and applies the truths of the Scriptures brings with it the power of the Holy Spirit in remarkable ways. As we gather on a regular basis with like minded believers, we embrace the heart of the Father in ways that we will never fully understand, and open ourselves for freedoms worked by the anointing of the Holy Spirit. This never takes the place of our own time spent in the Word, for spoken Word ought to serve as a confirmation of our own conviction, and an enlightenment to what we know as truth. The Remembered/Meditated Word – The choice is always ours whether we will embrace God’s Word as encouraging or hopeful, but the passage brought to mind and heart will enhance the possibility by a great amount. It is in these moments that natural tendencies and responses can give way to Spirit-led responses that work a sense of the Divine in our lives. How blessed we are to be called children of God, and to be those who in ongoing ways begin to embrace the eternal nature of our lives. For eternity we will hopefully wait, and for the present we will hopefully embrace the Word as it comes to us.

Salome’s Stars ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) You won’t be disappointed with taking on a new challenge, despite some initial misgivings. Look for this move to open other opportunities down the line. TAURUS (Apr. 20 to May 20) Let that beautiful smile not only put you at ease, but also show that you’re ready, willing and more than able to confound the naysayers around you. A new admirer has important news. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be careful how you handle a relationship that you’re hoping to save. You already have the facts on your side. Avoid weakening your position by embellishing it with unnecessary dramatics. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking definitive stands isn’t easy for you. But you not only need to stay with your decision, but also reassure others it was the right thing to do. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) You’re right to be upset about those who might be lying about you to others. But the best revenge is proving them wrong by succeeding at what you set out to do. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Caution is still advised before making a financial commitment to a “promising” project. Look for the facts behind the fluff. Devote the weekend to loved ones.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) A romantic situation creates some chaos for single Scorpions. But it’s well worth the effort to work things out. A trusted friend can offer some helpful advice. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Expect to make new friends as your social circle expands. Also, remember to tell that family member how proud you are of his or her achievements. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) New ventures continue to be favored. And with your selfconfidence rising all the time, you’ll want to see how well you can do with a new challenge. So, go to it. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) This is a good time for the usually “serious-minded” Aquarian to let loose and enjoy some fun times. Expect to get good news about a workplace issue. PISCES (Feb. 19 to Mar. 20) Changed plans might upset some people, but your needs should be respected. Offer explanations when necessary. Senior Dogs for Senior Citizens Critter Sitters Pet Resort is introducing a Senior Dogs for Senior Citizens program. Aged dogs need love, too. We would like to offer seniors the opportunity to be a companion home for these wonderful dogs until such time that you feel you no longer require a companion or until you can no longer care for the dog. Critter Sitters maintains the immunizations and provides food for each dog monthly. Home visits are possible if you require or desire us to check in on you and your dog companion. You can have compassion without the expense of owning a dog. If a deposit is required for your companion where you live, Critter Sitters will pay the cost so you can keep your dog. For more information, call 760-378-3101 and ask for Trish or Jesse.

Dave Says
Health Insurance Matters
Take your time
Retirement? What about dependents?
David Ramsey Kern River Courier Columnist Dear Dave, My boyfriend has a lot of debt. The other day a creditor called, and he wouldn’t answer the phone. Then, he told me it would be easier for him Ramsey to pay off his debts if we were married because I could act as his accountability partner. I don’t want to be the money cop, and I wonder if he would truly be more motivated. What do you think? —Janine Dear Janine, Someone who isn’t making any headway in getting out of debt while they’re single probably isn’t going to do a complete turnaround just because they get married. You can act as his accountability partner if you want, but you don’t have to get married to help him. In fact, dating is probably a better way to do this, because you can determine whether he’s really changing, or if he’s just trying to get you on board to help pay the bills. Debt, in itself, doesn’t keep someone from being marriage material. But you’re definitely not marriage material if you don’t work, you’re irresponsible or haven’t taken control of your life. These kinds of people are going to stay in debt and not be able to pay their bills. I’d say date this guy a little longer,
just to see if he’s serious about changing. But don’t get engaged yet, and don’t pay one penny of his bills for him! —Dave Dear Dave, My son is a sophomore at a local college, and he wants to transfer to a prestigious university. If he did this he would incur more than $100,000 in student loan debt, and that’s with us picking up half of the cost. What do you think I should tell him? —Will Dear Will, I’d have a hard time telling anybody that one school is $100,000 more valuable than another. The fact is, unless he has $100,000 lying around somewhere, he shouldn’t go to that other school for one simple reason – he can’t afford it! We hire people every week at my company, and where they attended college is a very minor deal. There will always be a few corporate types out there who play games and try to turn the office into some kind of snooty country club, but most employers don’t care where you went to college. It’s what you learn and being able to use that knowledge in the marketplace that’s really valuable. —Dave Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers. He offers financial advice as host of a nationally syndicated radio program, The Dave Ramsey Show, and created Financial Peace University. For more financial help visit daveramsey. com.
