Fred Roach holds an Alpers trout during a lake stocking of the prized fish recently. Alpers trout will be part of the Isabella Lake Fishing Derby coming this spring, which will feature a quarter of a million dollars in prizes. See Mike Mencarini’s fishing column on page 5 for news about recent planting of truckloads of trophy trout on the upper Kern River.

With the countdown at only 60 days, the planning for the 22nd Annual Isabella Lake Fishing Derby sponsored by Berkley is in high gear. According to event organizers, cash and prizes at this year’s April 16-18 event will total more than a quarter of a million dollars. The biggest award on the line is the $20,000 tagged trout sponsored by the Kern

So you have bought CFL light bulbs and plan to install them all over the house. Good for you; you are helping to save energy. But take particular caution installing the bulbs. While breaking one won’t exactly necessitate calling out the Hazmat Squad, you must exercise more than normal caution to clean up and dispose of the broken CFL parts. This is because CFLs countain mercury, a toxic substance. In order to limit exposure to yourself and your pets, the white dust and the broken glass must be taken care of in a special way.

The big news right now is, of course, Whiskey Flat Days. For the complete scoop on the Feb. 18-21 festival, make your way to the Whiskey Flat Days information booth in Kernville and snag a copy (it’s free) of the Whiskey Flat Claim Jumper. The Courier staff puts out the Claim Jumper every year for folks like you to learn all about Whiskey Flat Days – why we celebrate it, what goes on during the festival, why it has that name, and all about Whiskey Flat’s longtime gold mining history. Here is the nutshell version: In the 1850s, gold was discovered in the Kern River Valley. Prospectors heard about it and poured into the valley from all directions, hoping to strike it rich. They soon started a settlement here, which they dubbed Whiskey

Flat. The rough and ready town got civilized after a few years and was renamed Kernville. Now every year on President’s Day weekend the residents of Kernville and nearby towns celebrate the days when Kernville was known as Whiskey Flat with an Old West-style celebration. We have shoot-’em-up skits, a parade, a gold mining camp recreation along the river, a real rodeo, a carnival and heaps of fun. Enjoy this copy of the Courier. If you like it, we publish it every week. It’s free to pick up in the Kern River Valley area; if you want it mailed to you, we can do that, but we do have to charge you postage. It works out to $3 for four issues a month ($36 a year). It’s a bargain. You’ll get to find out what’s happening all year long in the Kern River Valley, a wonderful vacation destination at all times of the year.

Before you attempt cleanup, take heed of guidelines from the Environmental Protection Agency:

wipes (for hard surfaces) Glass jar with a metal lid (such as a canning jar) or a sealable plastic bag(s)

Before Cleanup • Have people and pets leave the room, and avoid the breakage area on the way out. • Open a window or door to the outdoors and leave the room for 5-10 minutes. • Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning (H&AC) system, if you have one. • Collect materials you will need to clean up the broken bulb: Stiff paper or cardboard Sticky tape (e.g., duct tape) Damp paper towels or disposable wet

Cleanup Steps for Hard Surfaces Carefully scoop up glass fragments and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place debris and paper/cardboard in a glass jar with a metal lid. If a glass jar is not available, use a sealable plastic bag. (NOTE: Since a plastic bag will not prevent the mercury vapor from escaping, remove the plastic bag(s) from the home after cleanup.) Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up

Recipes for Dummies by Bodfish Bob against the core, about ¼ inch thick. In a heavy skillet, heat a thin layer of lard or dripping until apples will sizzle in the pan. Add the apples in a single layer, turning frequently until golden brown. Serve hot, sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. Bodfish Bob's Hardtack 2 cups stone ground flour 1 cup water

Bodfish Bob's Ash Cakes 1 cup white cornmeal 1/2 cup flour (optional) 1/2 tsp. Salt Water

Mix dry ingredients. Add enough cold water to make a firm dough. Form the dough into thin cakes. Clear coals from an area of the campfire and lay the cakes on the hot earth. Rake coals and ash over the cakes and let them bake for about five minutes. Test for doneness by thumping the cake with a spoon handle or stick. A hollow ringing sound indicates doneness. Bodfish Bob's Fried Camp Apples Apples Sugar Cinnamon Lard or meat drippings

Slice the apples, peel, core and all,

Combine the flour and water. Knead until smooth. Sprinkle some flour on a smooth surface and roll the dough flat until it is 1/4 inch thick. Cut biscuits out with a can or a glass making each biscuit about 3-4 inches in diameter. Poke holes into each biscuit with a fork. Place on a floured cookie sheet. They should come out hard and dry. Bake at 400 F for 35-45 minutes. Bodfish Bob's Ranch Pickles Fill a large jar (about one gallon) with small to medium cucumbers. Add two tablespoons of salt, and a large bunch of dill. Fill the jar with boiling water, put the lid on, and set in the sun for about two weeks. After the pickles were gone, the cook would sometimes add some hard boiled eggs to the pickle juice and let it set for a week or so, and offer the cowboys another treat.

Previews of new DVDs by DNA Smith New DVDs reviewed in this column will be available in stores the week of March 1. PICKS OF THE WEEK "Bambi: Two-Disc Diamond Edition" (G) -- Disney's 1942 tale of one year in the life of an orphaned fawn is not only one of the best animated films from Disney's Golden Age, it is without a doubt a timeless classic that has enthralled audiences for generations -- and will continue to do so for generations to come. Like all children, Bambi is a bit gangly, uncoordinated and innocent. But following the tragic death of his mother, the young fawn must quickly learn to survive in a forest fraught with peril. Thankfully, he is James Franco befriended by Thumper the bunny and Flower the skunk. Together, they learn valuable lessons (often with the help of a wise old Owl) as they take their first tentative steps into young adulthood. "127 Hours" (R) -- Director Danny Boyle ("Slumdog Millionaire," "Trainspotting") pulls out all the stops in this based-on-atrue-story account of Aron Ralston (James Franco, in his best performance to date), a young canyoneer trapped in the Utah desert. In 2003, while climbing a remote canyon in Utah, Ralston tries to cross a gap that is bridged by a boulder. As he crosses, the boulder comes loose and Ralson -- still holding onto the massive stone -- falls about 20 feet to the canyon floor and finds that his hand is inextrica-

L

bly wedged between the boulder and the canyon wall. For five days, Ralston tries to free himself from the rock, but to no avail. He has flashbacks and hallucinations. Severely dehydrated, he drinks his own urine. He uses the small blade from a multi-tool to carve out his birth and death dates into the canyon wall. Finally, he summons the courage to do the only thing he can if he wants to survive: use the blunted, tiny knife to cut off his arm, and muster what little strength he has left to hike the tens of miles to safety. "Dr. Black, Mr. Hyde: 35th Anniversary Edition" (R) -- Awww yeah ... If you're in the mood for some funky, low-budget '70s blacksploitation, then look no further, my little possums. Courier Fishing Report

Trout bonanza is here! Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier columnist

If you read my column last week, I mentioned that a super surprise could happen for Whiskey Flat weekend. Well, it’s happened. The upper Kern River was stocked with rainbow trout on Wednesday. Mike Mencarini That’s good news! Well, let’s bump “good news” up a notch – several truckloads of rainbows in the 1 pound class have been stocked. That’s great news! Well, let’s bump “great news” up a notch – there have also been several truckloads of locally grown trophy rainbows planted! Yes, those beautiful multi-colored, line-breaking lunker trout. Let me tell you, these fish are awesome. These trout average 4 to 6 pounds each and are ready to challenge even the best of anglers. That’s not just great news, it’s fantastic news! So now you might be wonder-

ing where all of these wonderful fish have been stocked. I have that answer for you. These fish were stocked from Riverside Park in Kernville to Brush Creek, excluding those campgrounds that are closed or not accessible. In my humble opinion this is a trout bonanza! Very special thanks go to Marvin, Danny and Bret, the staff at the Kern River Fish Hatchery and Planting Station. *** Here are a few tips: make sure you and everyone over 16 has a 2011 current license. Read up on the DFG fishing regulations. Make sure you have good line. Small children, for safety’s sake, should wear life vests. Should you have good luck, send me a picture at --Mike Mencarini

RAC calling for forest proposals Kern River Courier

The Kern and Tulare Counties Resource Advisory Committee has begun accepting applications for forest projects. The RAC committee will have nearly $400,000 to spend on projects, made available to Tulare and Kern Counties through the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act. This is the second, and will be the last opportunity the RAC has asked for proposals. The Act expires in September, 2012; however, all proposals recommended by the RAC for Forest Supervisor approval must be submitted

by September 2011. The last date for accepting proposals is June 1, 2011. A workshop will be held in Bakersfield on March 17 at the County of Kern Administrative Office, 1115 Truxtun Avenue, from 5 - 8 p.m. to offer assistance to the public on completing the application process. The February meeting will also be available by videoconference at the Kern River Ranger District, 105 Whitney Road, Kernville, CA 93238. New RAC Project Proposal application forms and instructions are available on the Sequoia National Forest Website: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia/projects/rural-schools/index.html

Pass required for certain areas Mike Devich Kern River Courier

Recreational visitors to Lake Isabella need to purchase a pass to be able to take advantage of certain high-density recreational areas here. The Southern Sierra Pass is available at Golden State Surplus in Lake Isabella, Riverside One Stop Shell in Kernville, and at either of the two U.S. Forest Service offices in the valley (see page 2). The Southern Sierra Pass is required for recreational use within the Auxiliary Dam, Old Isabella Road and South Fork Recreation areas. Ninety-five percent of the revenue from pass sales goes directly back to these three sites to make improvements such as new restrooms, upgraded water systems, picnic tables, fire

rings, and increased Forest Service presence. Southern Sierra Passes include a $10 daily pass or, for more frequent users, a $50 annual pass. When purchasing an annual pass, an optional second vehicle (yearly) pass is available for $10. Another option, for people 62 or older, is the America the Beautiful (interagency) Senior Pass, honored nationwide at any Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service site. The Senior Pass costs $10 and is valid for the lifetime of the pass holder. A pass for persons with disabilities is also available at no charge. The Southern Sierra Pass has been sold since November 2008 for a small, particularly highusage area on the shore of Isabella Lake.

Laura Cunningham, artist and author of “A State of Change,” will give a slideshow presentation and sign copies of her book on Saturday, Feb. 19 at the South Fork Woman’s Club in Weldon, corner of Highway 178 and Fay Ranch Raod. A potluck begins at 5 pm with the slideshow 6:30 pm, followed by the book signing at 7:30 pm. Admission is free but donations to help offset the cost of the woman's club rental are welcome. Please contact Ellen for more information at 760-6089143 “A State of Change” is the journey of artist and naturalist Laura Cunningham, whose discovery of the loss of California's wild places and her artistic reconstruction of what once was is documented in the book. Laura also shares some surprising places where change moves at the pace of nature. “The Audubon wildlife sanctuary in Weldon, the Kern River Preserve, is one of these magical places where nature dictates most of the changes,” Cunningham says. Cunningham went on to say, “The earth has had an ever-changing landscape since it was created over 4 billion years ago. What it has never seen is the wholesale destruction of so many habitats at the hands of one species.” Come explore the visions and

Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Whatever decisions you're faced with this week, rely on your strong Aries instincts, and base them on your honest feelings. TAURUS (April 30 to May 20) You’re pained by what you feel is an unwarranted attack by a miffed colleague. But your sensible self should see it as proof that you must be doing something right. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) More fine-tuning might be in order before you can be certain that you're on the right track. Someone close to you might offer to help. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The week continues to be a balancing act 'twixt dreaming and doing. But by week's end, you should have a much better idea of what you actually plan to do. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Changing your plans can be risky, but it can also be a necessary move. Recheck your facts before you act. Tense encounters should ease by midweek. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might still be trying to adjust to recent changes. But things should improve considerably as you get to see some positive results. An uneasy personal matter calls for more patience. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Congratulations. Your good intentions are finally rec-

ognized, and long-overdue appreciation should follow. Keep working toward improvements wherever you think they're necessary. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 2) Try to look at your options without prejudging them. Learn the facts, and then make your assessments. Spend the weekend enjoying films, plays and musical events. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Someone might want to take advantage of your sense of fair play. But before you ride off to right what you've been told is a wrong, be sure of your facts. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might be surprised to learn that not everyone agrees with your ideas. But this can prove to be a good thing. Go over them and see where improvements can be made. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) After taking advice on a number of matters in recent months, expect to be called on to return the gesture. And, by the way, you might be surprised at who makes the request. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Reassure everyone concerned that a change of mind isn't necessarily a change of heart. Letters to the Courier

California Joe’s Storytelling Corner

Dear Kern River Courier, I also remember "Rosie the Walker" (Courier, Feb. 11). I believe she might have been Ginny Ledbetter's mother, but I'm not certain on that fact. Ginny would bring Rosie into our beauty salon, Curly Tom’s Hairstyling, for her haircuts. From those times I do have an interesting little story about Rosie. I can't remember if it took place in our first location next to the Shoe Box business or after we moved to our present location: One day while Linda was cutting Rosie's hair and I was cutting Ginny's, a beauty supply salesman from L.A. stopped in on his rounds to take a supply order from us. He looked terrible. Linda asked him what was wrong and he said he was all wore out and exhausted from lack of sleep for the last week or so. He and his wife just had the birth of their first baby, and it had been suffering with constant colic pains and nonstop crying for the last 10 days. They'd been to the doctor but nothing they'd tried had solved the problem. The doctor didn't know what to try next. Rosie popped up and said, "Oh, what do they know?!.... I can fix that little baby so that colic will never come back!". Garth says, "Oh, please tell me, we'll try anything to stop this!". Rosie says, "Bring two cups of water to a boil, through in two bay leaves and turn off the heat and let the bay leaf water come to room tempature. Then put the bay leaf water in a baby bottle and give only that water to the baby for its water until the water is gone. And that little baby will never have colic again." Two weeks later Garth walks back into the beauty salon belting out, "THANK YOU!, THANK YOU!!, THANK YOU!!! You tell that little lady thank you from my wife, my baby and from me! We have our lives back! Since then, we have used Rosie's formula for our grandchildren and have past it on to many, many customers for at least the last 25 yrs or better and have received many thanks for the tip. I say, "Thank you Rosie the Walker for walking into our lives... You have been a blessing for many." Tom Schwass Lake Isabella Dear Kern River Courier, I read that the Sierra Way is going to be closed for a total of about seven months. This is a prime artery for several events between now and then and is going to cost the valley dearly during this hard economy. If I had a financial interest in Kernville and had my dozer and backhoe up here there, I would be inclined to open the road. If I were a Kernville Chamber member I would be pounding on some doors to get it done even if I had to organize some volunteers. I suspect the delay is to be used as leverage to raise taxes and appease unions. Instead we need to embrace the times when men were real men and got things done! I was told old man Mallory (Bud's dad) cut the road between Nine Mile and 178. That is what I am talking about. Rick Crockett Canebrake Dear Kern River Courier, I'm going to try to put a request forward without "harping" too much on the upheaval that's going on in Kernville. By "upheaval" I mean: The Bike Park wars; the "ousting"of good people; the boycotting of good businesses. Now, here's my request: Any ideas as to how we can establish a viable organization that will support and promote Kern Valley commerce and our beautiful valley in general? An organization with a clear mission: A local organization of businesses whose goal is to further the interest and promote the commerce of their business community. This organization would be Non-Profit; Open to all Valley businesses; Non-Political; Community Oriented; Civic Minded; Frequently Audited; With Board term Limits; Not an owner of large parcels of land. I could make another list of what this organization would NOT do, but that would go back to harping and I really don't want to prolong the past or add salt to the many wounds that have been inflicted. I just want to learn from past mistakes and move forward. I'm serious about working together with anyone interested in taking a new and constructive direction. Nancy Walker Kernville

Traveling time California Joe Kern River Courier Columnist

We're going back to Alameda for the memorial service for Miz Sue's brother. Six hours on Amtrak. Jack and family will be coming from Camarillo, Conrad and Joy from Seattle way, California Joe Art and boys from Studio City. Anna's in Puna, India at a yoga institute. I'm just lucky that Miz Sue is taking it all so easily. Grant was her only brother and they were close. So ol’ brother-in-law Grant is gone. He made 78 and then he hung it up. Took a break from living, so to speak. I knew him for some forty years or so. He forgave a $5,000 bill I owed him. He just said, "Don't worry about it!" So I didn't. I'm gonna miss him for sure! He was a rare bird. *** My tenant just called me from Eagle Rock. Seems there's an underground water leak and the water won't shut off. My plumber is on the way. Time to think about selling the Eagle Rock house. We've

owned it since 1979. Been thirty some years. They won't buy it – the tenants, that is. Best folks I ever had as renters! Could sell it this summer. Or wait it out for better market later. Re-rent it once again! *** Next month we'll go to Lake Casitas for three days and then on to Camarillo for two more. In April i'm going fishing with Bill Diaz and in May, time for New Orleans and the Rotary Club doings. It should be great fun to see that old town once more. I'm also hoping to drive over to Leesville on the other side of the state and go through Alexandria once more as well. So once again I'll see Louisiana and the towns I grew up in. And go through Baton Rouge and stop at LSU. I've seen ‘em all. I spent four years at LSU and I never knew anything about the town of Baton Rouge. I just went to school and lived in the campus dorm and hung out in the village little town. And ran off to New York City the minute I could!

TROUT continued from page 1 trout derby. A major part of the success of this annual event is the contributions of the California Department of Fish & Game. Annually, the DFG provides approximately 5,000 trout for the derby, which community volunteers feed twice daily, seven days a week for almost five months until the start of the derby. The Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce has an order in for yet another load of Alpers trophy trout. This should make the Longest Trout Contest a very exciting competition. As long as you are a registered entrant in the derby, you qualify for the prizes offered in this contest. The trout presented for this contest can be tagged or untagged. If you have not already heard, there will be an Early Registration drawing for those who enter the Isabella Lake Fishing Derby on or before March 15, 2011. The lucky entrant will win a $500 cash prize. The early registration drawing is sponsored by Cedar City Area (Utah) Chamber of Commerce. One of the other big events is a drawing for a fully-equipped fishing boat from Galey’s Marine Supply in Bakersfield. To get information on ticket locations, please contact the Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce for ticket availability and locations, at (760) 379-5236 or via email at info@kernrivervalley.com. The drawing will take place on Monday April 18, the final day of the 2011 derby. (Winner need not be present.) For additional information, please visit the Isabella Lake Fishing Derby website http://www.isabellafishingderby.com or follow the derby on twitter @fishing_derby

Things I Have Noticed...

Haul out the ancient bus Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist

Some bus rides are smooth and trouble-free, but once in a while you get one that is straight from Hades. Returning from Tennessee on Southwest Airlines the other day, I was deposited at the LAX terminal just in time to Middleworth miss my bus to Bakersfield. This meant a four-hour wait until the next bus arrived. If you have ever waited in the hard seats of the baggage area of LAX for four hours, you know what it’s like. Your tush becomes paralyzed and numb and your brain turns to mush as the bustle of incoming and outgoing passengers flows over you like a waterfall. Trying to read or do a crossword puzzle doesn't help and just adds to the agony of the wait. When the next bus finally arrived, we headed into the 5 o’clock flurry of Interstate 5. From my seat I could see four solid lanes of 10-mile-an-hour traffic. Half an hour into the trip the driver got on the intercom and said that there was a fire on the Grapevine and we would have to make a detour on the 101 freeway towards Ventura and then back across to merge with Interstate 5 again. (About 60 miles out of our way.) As we climbed a hill on the

101 freeway, suddenly the bus’s motor began to cough and I noticed smoke billowing out. The driver pulled over to the side and announced that the motor was “kaput.” He called ahead for a bus from Camarillo to come out, pick us up, and take us to Bakersfield. (Via Camarillo.) We sat there for two hours until the other rig finally arrived. Then we got off our bus and onto the other as freeway traffic thundered by five feet away. The replacement bus was evidently one that had been sitting around. It needed dusting and bug spray to get rid of the flies, fleas and spiders. We started home, but unlike the modern bus we had been on, this one was an old stickshift rascal (most likely last driven on the Oregon Trail.) Creaking and groaning, we finally got to I-5, where naturally, we had to wait for a traffic accident to clear. The toilet on the replacement bus was only sporadically working, so we crossed our legs and thought of other things as we inched our way to Bakersfield. Fortunately I was able to call home on my cell phone and let my wife know about the delay. Needless to say, as we pulled into the station and I rushed to their bathroom, I was ecstatic that this bus ride from hell was finally over. Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.

CFL continued from page 1 any remaining small glass fragments and powder. Place the used tape in the glass jar or plastic bag. Wipe the area clean with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place the towels in the glass jar or plastic bag. Vacuuming of hard surfaces during cleanup is not recommended unless broken glass remains after all other cleanup steps have been taken. [NOTE: It is possible that vacuuming could spread mercury-containing powder or mercury vapor, although available information on this problem is limited.] If vacuuming is needed to ensure removal of all broken glass, keep the following tips in mind: Keep a window or door to the outdoors open; Vacuum the area where the bulb was broken using the vacuum hose, if available; and remove the vacuum bag (or empty and wipe the canister) and seal the bag/vacuum debris, and any materials used to clean the vacuum, in a plastic bag. Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials, including vacuum cleaner bags, outdoors in a trash container or protected area until materials can be disposed of properly. Check with your local or state government about disposal requirements in your area. Some states and communities require fluorescent bulbs (broken or unbroken) be taken to a local recycling center. Wash your hands with soap and water after disposing of the jars or plastic bags containing bulb debris and cleanup materials. Continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the H&AC system shut off, as practical, for several hours. See the EPA’s web site for cleanup steps for carpeting or rugs, and also for future cleaning of carpeting or rugs. It

requires airing out the room during and after vacuuming. Disposing Of The Debris Kern County Waste Management has special guidelines and requirements for disposal of residential hazardous waste. Residential hazardous wastes are products, purchased for use in or around the home, that when improperly discarded, may threaten human health or the environment. These products include household cleaners; deodorizers; personal hygiene products; pesticides; herbicides; insecticides; pet care products; paint products;and automotive products and fluids. Even though a product can be easily purchased at the local store, it can still be harmful to you, your family and the environment. Disposing of residential hazardous waste in your trash can be dangerous to your health, the health of others and the environment. Thrown into your trash can, residential hazardous waste can pose a threat to trash collectors and workers. For legal, safe disposal of residential hazardous waste, there are two options. Take it to the Kern County Special Waste Facility in Bakersfield or wait until there is a One-Day Hazardous Waste Collection Event in the Kern River Valley. The Metro Kern County Special Waste Facility is located at 4951 Standard Street, (southwest corner of Standard and Foster Streets) in Bakersfield. Hours: Thursday, Friday, Saturday 8 am - 4 pm. The next one-day Hazardous Waste Collection Event here in the Kern River Valley is on March 5 from 9:00 a.m. until noon at the Kern Valley Transfer Station in Cyrus Canyon.

Health Insurance Matters

Doing something about it Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist

A day doesn't go by when there is not something in the news regarding health care and the recently passed federal legislation. Most prominent of late is the varHarry Thal ious Superior Court rulings declaring the law unconstitutional. The legal battles to date of been around that part of the bill, referred to as a coverage mandate, where the majority of people would be required by this new law to carry health insurance. This requirement may cause additional financial strains on families, and most certainly will cause greater cost to employers and business. It is very understandable that the best intentions went into the drafting of this legislation, but there are many unintentional consequences. The legal minds that wrote the 2,000+ pages of legislation basically outlined what they would like to see happen, and then left the actual "operational manual" to the various government departments. This week, a delegation of health insurance agents from the Kern Association of Health Underwriters went to Washington, D.C. to learn and offer their expertise to our government's officials. We met on

Tuesday with House of Representative Majority Whip, Hon. Kevin McCarthy to discuss the health care legislation and offer assistance in fixing this flawed legislation so it could work for all Americans. Licensed health insurance agents are most qualified to act as resources, as they work with the insurance companies as advocates for the American consumer where they navigate the consumer through the often rough waters of understanding the health care system. The trip was in conjunction with the National Association of Health Underwriters 21st Annual Capitol Conference. I introduced McCarthy to the audience of over 900 insurance agents and media to a standing ovation. Kevin is recognized as a very pro-business legislator who wants to modify and improve the legislation to provide affordable health insurance to all Americans. While not entirely out of the question, repeal of the law is not anticipated, so the Kern AHU members have vowed to assist our residents in navigating the trouble waters. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker. He is President of the Kern Association of Health Underwriters and on the National Association of Health Underwriters Medicare Advisory Board.
