Group against teen suicides holds huge inspirational meet

Kirk Turnipseed of Wofford Heights caught these fine Alpers trophy trout recently, the largest being 2.2 pounds, at Tillie Creek Campground. He used a spinner with salmon eggs. Trout fishing is reported to be very good. See Mike Mencarini’s fishing column on page 5.

The Hear Us Movement gathered strongly on Jan. 27 at Kern Valley High School’s Fine Arts Building to share feelings about teen suicides. From the moment of arrival, it was clear that the meeting was by and for the students of the Kern Valley. Prior to the designated start time, only students were allowed into the building. Then at 6 p.m., adults were allowed to enter. There were two tiers of seating. The student seating was in the front and the adults were invited to sit on the back tier. About 120 students and 120 adults attended the meeting. Besides parents, the adults included teachers, school staff, local counselors, Sheriff’s deputies, local firefighters, and senior citizens. Extra chairs had to be set up to accommodate everyone. The Hear Us Movement started on Dec. 2 after a community meeting sparked by two local high school student suicides. Those who wanted to speak found that meeting to be very disappointing because they were not heard. That inspired the "Hear Us" idea in the minds of Neal and Amie Preston. Preston shared the idea with Scott Siddle, and Neal and Scott shared it with five students, who loved the idea. The first meeting was four weeks ago, on Jan. 6. They meet after school every Thursday. Each meeting is a little different, but always includes at least one student with prepared remarks about how they are feeling, and all in attendance are invited to share their feelings on “Thought Cards.” This evening's question was,

There is no word yet as to whether or not Alta One will reopen its Lake Isabella branch in that building, but it has announced in a letter to account holders that a temporary service site has been secured in Lake Isabella, at 5640 A3 Lake Isabella Blvd. Until it opens, however, the Kernville branch will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
KR Preserve presents birding program Feb. 5 The Friends of the Kern River Preserve will hold another free monthly family nature exploration on Saturday, February 5 from 9 to 11 a.m. Birds are one of the most fascinating groups in the animal kingdom, magical jewels that fill our yards with movement and color. Come learn how to identify the dozens of species of birds in Kern River Valley backyards from Alison Sheehey, Outreach Director at the Audubon Kern River Preserve. This will be an interactive three-part workshop. 1. Binocular use (please bring your binoculars if you have them... we have some to borrow if you don't own a pair). Many people find it frustrating to see through binoculars. There are four simple yet critical steps to make it a joyous experience. You will be taken through these steps. 2. Watching birds and seeing field marks are two different things. Many of us learn to see the whole bird and put a name on it. That works but takes a long time. Learn how to observe different parts of birds to create the whole picture and then use a field guide to find the bird. 3. After learning how to use a field

guide, take a walk with an expert, learn birding etiquette and get help identifying any species seen. For those interested, after a lunch break we can visit some of the hot spots around Isabella Reservoir to see more species. Please RSVP for this part of the session. Monthly events are free and appropriate for ages 5 and up. All interested persons (children are welcome but those under 14 must be accompanied by an adult). All of the Friends of the Kern River Preserve events are held outdoors at the Audubon Kern River Preserve headquarters. Please dress for cold to warm weather, bring drinks, a picnic lunch, sunscreen and bug spray. Binoculars, camera and a field guide are always a good idea if you have them. For more information please contact the Friends of the Preserve at 1-760-3782029 or krpfriends@audubon.org. The Kern River Preserve is at 18747 Highway 178 in Weldon. Look for a large Audubon California sign at the entrance to the Kern River Preserve. The entrance is 100 feet west of Kelso Valley Road. Turn on the dirt easement road and drive 0.2 miles to the parking area inside the forest.

strong, but I have the same feelings and fears as our students. But I leave with a little less fear and a little more hope. We have amazing children in our community; let them be amazing." Alyson Borthick spoke about peer pressure on teens. She said that Hear Us helps us to crush the walls of separation. She summed it up by saying, "Little acts of kindness will keep the hope alive. You never know how something so simple can change someone's life." Dugan Whistler, who is also a local California Highway Patrol officer, then came back up to explain his feelings. One thing he noted was, "We need to respect fear, and learn from fear, but not let fear define you." He believes that we all need to try to do something nice each day, to say a positive word or offer help. It will make you feel good and help the other person and just be an inspiration. He admonished that we just need to take the time. This prompted Neal Preston to tell a story about being a 5'4" freshman 16 years ago and being rescued from the trash can by a then-senior named Jason Williams. A video of Kern Valley students, parents and friends was shown. The theme of the video was hope. They answered questions like, "What do you think about suicide?" One student summed it up: "Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem." Other students noted how Hear Us is a place to be heard and to hear others. Dugan Whistler reflected that after it happened, "We decided as a family we had to let it make us better, we were a good family before,

"What do you hope for, and how do we get there?" Previous questions have been "What's on your heart?" "What inspires you?" and "What are your fears?" Thought Cards are read at each meeting so everyone gets heard, even if they are too timid or embarrassed to share out loud. Robbie Fisher, a Kern Valley High School senior, introduced the meeting. Included in his remarks, Fisher stated, "We don't want to feel like that ever again." There was a student-led skit, showing two student friends, and one becomes surrounded by depression, anger, heartbreak, drugs and alcohol. The friend tries to set the other student free, and is unable. Then the friend enlists the help of his mother, counselor, pastor, coach, officer and teacher. Fisher then went on to explain that kids talk through their clothes, music, and some things they do. He used a ping pong ball as an example and said that when teens don't have anyone to talk to and stomped the ball, demonstrating what can happen. He said that Hear Us is a place where kids can talk and ignite hope. Neal Preston introduced Dugan and Jennifer Whistler, parents of one of the students who committed suicide. They have attended three of the four Hear Us events. She said when she heard about the first suicide, she thought about how terrible it was and cried, and then when it happened in her home she thought that she could never go on. She said, "This isn't the parents, siblings, friends or the community's fault." She said the students that killed themselves, or attempted to, just forgot how much they are loved. She said Hear Us showed her that "I am

Recipes for Dummies by Bodfish Bob Bodfish Bob's Franks and Beans Casserole 1 large can Bush's or B&M original baked beans 8 all beef hot dogs, sliced penny size (I prefer Kosher ones) 1/4 cup Heinz Ketchup 1 tsp. Gulden's Mustard or any spicy brown will work 4 slices bacon cut in half
In a large bowl mix all ingredients except bacon. Pour mixture into casserole dish which has been sprayed with cooking spray, top with bacon slices and bake in 350 degree preheated oven for about 1 hour or until bacon is cooked and the franks are done. Bodfish Bob's Creamy Potato Soup 8 slices bacon 1 can Cream of Chicken Soup Dash pepper 3 medium red potatoes, peeled and cubed 1 cup sour cream 1 cup chopped onions 1/2 tsp salt 1 1/2 cups milk
In a 3 quart saucepan place cubed potatoes, onions, salt and pepper. Add water to the top of potatoes and cook slowly until potatoes are tender. While potatoes are cooking, fry bacon and set aside until cool. Crumble when cool enough to handle. When potatoes and onions are tender, add chicken soup, milk, bacon and sour cream. Stir well after each addition. Heat to serving temperature. You may sprinkle shredded cheese on top if you like.
Previews of new DVDs by DNA Smith New DVDs reviewed in this column will be available in stores the week of Feb. 8. PICKS OF THE WEEK "Unstoppable" (PG-13) -- If you like movies about runaway trains and the determined Choo-Choo Boys charged with stopping them, then Boy Howdy, have I got the perfect film for you. In "Unstoppable," an unmanned train carrying tons of deadly chemicals is barreling across the countryside. Engineer Denzel Washington and conductor Chris Pine are the only two people who can save Scranton from going up in flames and being awash in steaming toxic death -and never have I wanted two people to fail more. "Waiting for Chris Pine Superman" (PG) - In "Waiting for Superman," Davis Guggenheim, director of "An Inconvenient Truth," the Academy Award-winning documentary on climate change, turns his sights on America's ailing education system. In this controversial documentary, Guggenheim suggests that one of the major problems with education today is teachers unions, which protect bad teachers all for the sake of perpetuating tenure agreements. He also is a proponent of the charter school system, which hasn't been proven to be substantially better than public schools. The lottery system used to pick the students is absolutely soul-crushing to watch.

While it's clear that Guggenheim has an agenda, "Superman" isn't one of those Michael Moore-style films that are long on propaganda and short on facts. No matter where you stand on the issue, this film is sure to provoke thoughtful and passionate discussion. "Dr. Who: A Christmas Carol" (Unrated) -- It's Christmas Eve, and honeymooners Amy Pond and Rory Williams are aboard a luxury cruise ship that becomes disabled by a mysterious cloud formation above the surface of an alien planet. They and the ship's 4,000 passengers have less than an hour before they crash. Filled with whimsy, pathos and humor, this Christmas special is a delight for adults and children alike. Courier Fishing Report
Trout are still the way to go Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier columnist
The past few days have seemed like semi-spring, but let's not get lulled into a false season. The warmer weather has been beneficial to the crappie bite. This past week has been pretty good at French Gulch Marina, on the Mike Mencarini docks. My good friend, Pastor James, and I fished the docks several times this week, catching lots of really nice crappie, some weighing in the 1 pound class. The best day was the worst weather of the last front. With 13 crappie averaging 1 poind, these fish are ready to spawn and were caught in 20 feet of water. A few places that you could try fishing from shore would be the rock point just north of North Fork Marina, Piney Point. If fishing from a boat, Rocky Point, the trees between Camp Nine and the marina at North Fork are good places to start looking. Everyone I had contact with around the lake over the weekend that were fishing all had at least a few trout on their stringers. This included all the usual places -Boulder Gulch, Auxiliary Dam, B.S.
Beach, Paradise Cove, Red's Marina, Main Launch. My best tip would be to look for those fishing on sandy beaches, or where there are several people fishing in a particular area. This time of year, the weather patterns change every few days. The most effective way to keep catching fish is to fish as often as possible and keep in mind that all fish do not feed at the same time, so there is always someone hungry. Weather conditions have subdued most bass fishermen this past week. Those who braved the winterlike conditions reported little or no action on the largemouths. The overall consensus seems to be that if you want to catch fish, trout fishing from shore is your best bet. After talking to the warden, and most of us know who I'm referring to, you would be best advised to obey all Fish & Game laws. Here is some very good news for you Derby hopefuls. The trout that are being raised for the Derby in April are much larger this year. If all things go right, they should be in the 1 pound or better class by the middle of April. A final note -- thanks to all who sponsor the Derby. Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and a volunteer at the Kern River Fish Hatchery. For questions or comments you can reach him through the Kern River Courier, office@kernrivercourier.com.

Letters to the Courier Dear Kern River Courier, Your reporting on the (bike) park of recent (Courier, Jan. 28) is exceedingly flawed. It is obvious that due diligence to get the facts have not come into play here. In fact, before you lie about the ABA verses NBL thing, you might want to get the facts straightened out. I’m sure ABA would take serious issue with you reporting without at least asking them if any of that rubbish were true. You are basing your reporting on a bias that leans towards Chris Brayman and the CRF. You are obviously taking what they are feeding you as fact without doing your homework. This is not true reporting and is quite sad. I just hope the ABA does not hold you liable. By the way, I have a contract in my possession that was signed by Chris Brayman and Jill Sloan (as chamber president) with the ABA that supersedes any other contracts (dated 4-1-10 which was also prior to the CRF coming on board). I that contract they made it clear that there were mountain bike skills courses and pump tracks. Guess what? ABA was fine with that and the contract was excepted and signed on 4-10-2010 by the ABA CEO. But then, you didn’t ask anyone for facts regarding ABA did you? Also, it is not 99.00, it is 130.00 for NBL! Also, it is not free, it is typically 5-6 for practicing and 5-6 for races (to pay for awards) with NBL. If you do a proper comparison of 9 weeks of racing it would like this – ABA 45.00 for membership and 9 x $10.00 a race is 90 bucks = $135.00 NBL is 130.00 for membership and 9 x $6.00 a race is 54 bucks = $184.00 OH wait a minute, you didn’t do any fact checking! Brad Alexander (via e-mail) Kernville Dear Kern River Courier, Charlies Market Is Open, someone is spreading a rumor about Charlies Market closing. This is not true. Charlies Market in Wofford Heights is open and he’s looking forward to seeing you all so stop by and see him and try some of his amazing food and do a little shopping. To whomever is spreading the rumor, please stop, you are messing with people’s livelihood; that is not right. FROM A LOYAL CUSTOMER AND HER FAMILY. Charlie will also be celebrating his 25th anniversary sometime in February. Theresa Kulsicavage and family Wofford Heights Dear Kern River Courier,

I would like to publicly give a deep, heartfelt thank you to Bob Burkhart and all of his kitchen crew, as well as the many volunteers connected to the Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) of The Kern River Valley for all the cheerfully given work they put into our spaghetti dinner fund-raiser on Saturday, January 22 at the Senior Center in Lake Isabella. We began serving meals at 4 p.m., and by the close of the evening at 7 p.m. we had served over 120 dinners. Throughout the evening names were drawn for door prizes of goodies prepared by our volunteer, Pat Edwards, and at the end of the evening names were drawn for nine raffle prizes. Those in attendance had a wonderful time of good food and fellowship, and there was a lot of laughter and visiting the entire evening. Once our final bills are paid, we will have cleared more than $1,000.00; this will go a long way in helping us to obtain supplies for the center, which in turn will enable us to help those in our community who find themselves in situations that may involve an unplanned pregnancy. It will help us obtain equipment for training others to be volunteer peer counselors. It will help us to plan and present classes on parenting, abstinence, and post-abortion Bible studies. It will help us to be that safe place for someone to go when they simply need a loving and attentive ear to listen as they sort through their feelings and figure out how they should proceed with their life. So to the kitchen crew and all other volunteers: thank you: it was a job very well done! We are proud to be associated with you, and couldn't have done the fundraiser without you. To those who attended or gave a donation: Thank you for supporting the Pregnancy Resource Center, as together we can make a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in learning more about the PRC, please call the Center at 379-8893 and leave a message…we will return your call! If you'd like to receive our monthly newsletter, email me at prckrv@yahoo.com, and I will add your email to our list. If you don't have email, call me with your mailing address, and we'll be happy to send it to you each month. Myrtle Pierce Executive Director, PRC Dear Kern River Courier, As we enter a new year, the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Hatchery would like to thank the following businesses for their support in 2010. First we would like to thank Sierra Gateway Market for their generous contribution of hot dogs and buns, without which we could not feed our visitors during the Trout Festival and the Cartwright–Hays Special Needs Fishing Day. Additionally, we would like to thank the True Value Home Center, Primo’s Liquor and Deli, Johnstone’s Stationery, and El Jacalito Mexican Grill for their non-monetary donations. Last but not least, thank you to the management and staff of the Kernville Hatchery for providing the fish for the Whiskey Flat Days fishing pool, support during the Special Needs Fishing Day, and the fish that keep our visitors returning to the Valley. Saul McGarity, President and Linda Kubisiak, Secretary Friends of the Hatchery

Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) St. Valentine's Day magic rules the entire week for romantic Rams and Ewes. Music, which is the food of love, is also strong. The weekend offers news. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your aspects favor the arts -- which the Divine Bovine loves, loves, loves. Also, for those looking for romantic love, Cupid is available for requests. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Loving commitments continue to grow stronger. Ditto budding relationships. A recent move to help start up a new career-linked direction could soon begin to show signs of progress. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Single Moon Children might be eager to take that proverbial chance on love. But your more serious side will feel better if you take things slowly and give your moonstruck self more time. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It's a love fest for Leos and Leonas this week. And with matchmaking friends, single Simbas searching for romance shouldn't have too far to look. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) More understanding on both sides can work miracles in restoring ailing relationships to health. Make the first move, and you'll be closer to your much-wanted reunion.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Accept the fact that you are worthy of being loved, and you'll find proof in what is revealed to you over the course of the week. Also accept a compliment offered with great sincerity. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Planning to take a new direction in life is exciting. And so is a new awareness of someone's special affection. Expect a slow and mostly steady development. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although you might still feel you weren't treated quite right in a recent matter, all that will work out in time. Meanwhile, enjoy the week's special qualities and potentials. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Deciding not to give up on a troubling romantic situation helps start the healing process. Expect to find some valuable insight into yourself. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The week is filled with positive potentials, but it's up to you to make the right choices. The advice of someone who truly cares for you can be priceless. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It's a good time to make yourself available to possibilities of the romantic kind. Already paired? Good. In that case, be sure to reassure that special person of your feelings. BORN THIS WEEK: Your generosity gladdens the hearts of others, and you bask in their joy. c) 2011King Features Synd., Inc.

Obituary notices Noah Daniel Noble Sept. 11, 1982 - Jan. 26, 2011 Our wonderful son, friend, brother, grandson, mate, belayer and beautiful human passed from this earth on Jan. 26, 2011. Noah, always sure on his feet on snowboards or mountaintops, slipped on some stairs, lost consciousness and died immediately. Noah was born in Bakersfield, son of Lee Noble and Elizabeth Szymanski. Noah lived in Wofford Heights for most of his boyhood. He enjoyed working in Grandma Lucia’s back yard and eating fresh peaches. Noah and his mom moved to Colorado where Noah graduated from Sand Creek High School and then went on to college at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in natural resources. Through selected internships, he solidified his career decision to carefully manage earth’s resources. Noah’s ability to communicate as well as his passion and commitment would have made him a vital force in that chosen career. Noah lived life as an adventurer on all fronts. He took wonderful journeys to Australia, Fiji, Thailand, Malaysia, India and Cambodia. Everywhere Noah went he turned strangers into friends. So enthralled in travel, surely in the land of endless smiles, his was one of the brightest. Noah also rode his bike through Vietnam, tackling as many as 120 kilometers a day, loaded with all his gear. He journeyed over a thousand miles and wanted to go more, but was called home by family matters. He met fellow kindred spirits on his journey, making connections that should easily have lasted a lifetime. Noah met a sweetheart on his trip to Thailand and Josephine came over here from Sweden to spend more great times. They climbed together throughout California. Love and trust are great things to build hanging from 160 feet of rope. Noah is survived by his parents Elizabeth Szymanski and Lee Noble; his brothers Aaron and Victor; and sisters Ali, Yetlanezi and Amalinalli. His cousin, Lyman Petersen, was like a brother and a twin, born just a month after Noah. His grandparents, Lucia and Stan Szymanski and Veronica Noble, also loved Noah very much. Other family members devastated by his passing are stepmoms Lisa and Fabiola; Uncle Stan and Aunt Rosa; Aunt Lucette; Aunt Rita and Uncle Paul; Uncle Dan and Aunt Gina from Nebraska; Uncle John from Washington; Aunt Linda of Palo Alto, Calif.; Uncle Dan and Aunt Tina and Ceasar and Sophia Lanzi from Vancouver. We all love you, Noah. No flowers, please, but a kind donation to your local food bank would be great. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, at St. Jude Catholic Church in Wofford Heights.
Robert Anthony Cauley Dec. 22, 1966 - Jan. 13, 2011 In Loving Memory Robert was born on Dec. 22, 1966 to Anthony M. and Lynn D. Cauley in Bellflower, Calif., and passed away in Lake Isabella on Jan. 13, 2011. Robert was raised in Long Beach, Calif. and graduated from Jordan High School. He is survived by his father, mother and brothers Steven and Gregory. A mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Jan. 24, 2011 at 1 p.m. at All Souls Mortuary Chapel in Long Beach with Fr. Francis Ilano officiating. Interment was at All Souls Catholic Cemetery.

MOVEMENT continued from page 2 but this had to make us better." He also noted, "We may not have all the answers but we have hope." Preston then introduced Jim Ranger, a Bakersfield worship leader (some in the crowd recognized him as a Season 9 “American Idol” contestant.) He said that he and about 40 others in Bakersfield people were affected by the Hear Us Movement, and it has touched their lives. He sang some songs that he wrote. One line that was memorable was, "When I face the night, at least I have the stars." Scott Siddle said that the students have a vision to see Hear Us move beyond the Kern Valley and that people in New York and Colorado already want to do something like this. He then asked those in attendance if they could financially help the group. Robbie Fisher led the crowd in a Hear Us Movement chant to close out the meeting.

Flight of the Fleeing Flies Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist
I've noticed that they are so common we we tend to ignore them. But they're there. Flies, lots of them, all kinds of them. Tse Tse flies, house flies, horseflies, fireflies and many more. They fly, they buzz, they land, they're everywhere. Middleworth But have you ever given thought as to the real story of the hapless flies? Nobody loves them, or likes them, when they get pesky we take a fly swatter and splat – they're toast! No remorse on our part, no guilt, and no regret concerning the life we've taken. Now, think about it from the fly's point of view. Suppose the fly is you and you're out on your daily flight, looking for stuff to wallow around in, when suddenly you see a coffee table that looks like a great landing field. You glide in, make a perfect eight point landing and start brushing your legs together, preparing to spread some germs. Suddenly you hear a swishing sound, feel the air pressure difference and you look up. There, descending at about100 miles an hour, is a great big flyswatter. Your little fly life is doomed. As you look at the weapon hurtling downward, your life flashes before each of your multiple eyes.
(This takes a while.) Finally, you start your escape, but it’s too late. Splat! Your next stop is fly heaven, or some lesser place depending if you're a bornagain fly or not. Church flies feel there is an afterlife for flies and “splat” is not the end of it all. There has to be a place for little flysouls to go! At least they hope so, I’m sure. Meanwhile, the killers (humans) have left squashed little fly bodies on the coffee table and everywhere. There is no crying at the altar, no wailing at the wall, there is no funeral service and later you're swept off the table into a trash can. There is no investigation, no posters with rewards for the apprehension of the serial killer of innocent flies. You don't live long anyway, and it seems a shame to cut short your tiny span of existence by some weapon (flyswatter) wielding homo sapien. So... we humans might keep the above in mind as summer approaches and the fly population begins to swell. Knowing we will probably continue our wicked ways, at least we can think about what we're doing and be selective, remembering the famous words of Mowshe the Master Fly: "Let my people go, or at least some of them!” Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.
