Sierra Way repair is ‘high priority’ Kern River Courier

County and State agencies request storm damage facts Sean Collins Kern County Fire Department Special to the Courier
The Kern County Emergency Operations Center staff and representatives from the State Office of Emergency Services have been working hard to provide facts and figures regarding damages encountered by Kern County residents following the recent storms and subsequent flooding. As part of the damage assessment process, the team is urging residents to quickly report any significant damage to their residential or business property as a result of the Dec 2010 Winter Storm. This information is needed to determine what, if any, assistance from the Federal government will be made available to Kern residents. Damage should be considered significant if rain water or flood water has entered the structure damaging ceilings, furniture, flooring or personal possessions or if wind associated with the storms has caused damage to property either directly or from falling debris. To report this information, please contact: Terri Ollivier at tollivier@ co.kern.ca.us or by phone on (661)873-2602.
This road is believed to have suffered more damage than any other throughout the county during the recent storms. Recent visits to the site suggest the asphalt is still moving down the slope. According to Todd Wood in the County Roads Department, the fix for Sierra Way could still be as much as 8 weeks away. The major issue behind the delay is finding the reason for the road failure. Geo-techs are currently evaluating the soils but their report will not be ready for a few more days. Work could still take 4 to 6 weeks or longer to complete after reports are completed. This timeline of course will also be dependent on the weather.

Things I Have Noticed...
Wiggling my X-rated toes Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist
A few weeks ago I bought a new pair of shoes. They were on sale at Big Five and I needed a good pair of knockabouts. It was all self serve, I looked around and found a pair that looked pretty good. I sat down and tried them on. They looked Middleworth OK but the fit wasn’t quite right. My toes felt squashed. When I took the shoe off there was a wad of tissue paper still inside the shoe “No wonder,” I said to myself and tried them on again. They fit perfectly. I noticed they were priced at $19.99, marked down from $59.95. “Such a deal,” I said to myself and for a moment as I sat there shoes in hand, I let myself take a nostalgic memory trip to a time when there was a shoe person who actually sat on a little stool and helped you try on shoes. He would even go in the backroom to find your exact size and color and along with the shoes made sure you got a free shoehorn. I also remember a Shoe Store called GallenCamps. They had a gadget that looked like one of the old penny weighing machines. Except these were flouroscopic x-
Page 3
ray gizmos which actually let you see what your feet looked like inside new shoes. As a kid it was a real thrill to stand on the x-ray machine and wiggle my toe bones. I have no idea how many radiation roentgens my body absorbed but I know I jumped on the machine every time we were even close to that store (I probably glowed in the dark, but didn’t notice it). As a youngster many of my shoes came from the Sears catalog. They would come by mail in a sturdy box. These were the years when I went barefooted and seldom wore shoes, outgrowing them long before they wore out. But the box they came in was a different story. It was strong and could be used for all kinds of kid stuff. Storing things, making it a garage for “tootsie toys” (tiny potmetal brightly colored autos) or as a hanger for my toy airplanes. In my dotage and since retirement, my shoes now are mostly fabric types, easily washed and cleaned after outdoor activities. But I still miss the old x-ray machine and wonder how my ancient toes look inside new shoes, and of course any ambiant radiation that might incur would probably be good for my prostate!
There are numerous opportunities for compassionate individuals to share their time and heart with Kern County residents affected by terminal illness. The orientation will be held at 4700 Stockdale Hwy, Ste. 120, Bakersfield CA 93309, for anyone interested in becoming a volunteer or learning more about how volunteers help the hospice care team create a better quality of life for patients and families under hospice care. To reserve your seat, please contact the volunteer department at 661-716-4000 or email rfrankhouser@optimalcares.com for more information. Optimal Hospice Care holds new volunteer orientations throughout the year on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. beginning, Wednesday, January 19, 2011.

New Year, new license process Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier columnist
Here we are into the New Year. I am still adjusting to being visually challenged but I am hanging in there. I hope everyone has purchased your 2011 fishing license. For those who have not done so it is a bit different this year. You show your identification and its computer generated. Mike Mencarini I'm not sure of the details but my guess is it is a way to keep track of the applicants and make issuing duplicate licenses easier to obtain. Even though we have had record amounts of rain and the run-off has raised the lake level, it is still early into the season and the lake level should remain at mid winter level. I have not been able to get out on the lake lately but those who fish on a regular basis tell me the trout action around the lake is still very good with some nice fish being caught. The recent stocking of Alpers on the south side of the lake should keep the trout action good. Thanks again to the Chamber and those involved. I've noticed that the applications for the Derby are out, so sign up
early. At this time there are no plants planned for the river in January. My guess is Whiskey Flats will be the next time for planting. No reports on the crappie or bass bite this week. Hope to see you on the lake.

Salome’s Stars ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) Single Lambs looking for romance could find Cupid accommodating this week. Paired partners also find their relationships benefiting from the chubby cherub’s attention. TAURUS (Apr. 20 to May 20) Keep your keen Bull’s eye focused on your target, and shake off any attempt to turn your attention elsewhere. You should get some news later in the week that might answer some questions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your enthusiasm for a project might have been somewhat premature. Although you feel positive about it, you might need more information to make an informed decision. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking on a new responsibility might seem like the politically correct thing to do. But even with the promise of support, was it the wisest? Consider reassessing your upcoming decision. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Apply yourself to completing your task despite all the distractions that might be interfering with your work. Then reward yourself with a weekend of fun shared with people who are close to you. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept.22) A business agreement from the past might need to be looked at again. Use this unexpected development to check out other matters related to it.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Don’t ignore that uneasy feeling about making a commitment. It could be a case of understandably cold feet, or a warning that something isn’t as right as it should be. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) A colleague could be more supporting of one of your efforts. But it’s up to you to make the case for it, and that could mean opening up a secret or two, which might be a problem for you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Expect some good news about a relative you’ve been worried about. But don’t expect the full story to be told — at least not yet. A workplace matter might face shifting priorities. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Despite some anxious moments, you could have reason to be pleased with how things are turning out. An end-ofweek call might hold some interesting information. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) A long-overdue expression of appreciation could be offered soon. But admit it: You never really expected it would happen, right? Meanwhile, keep your weekend options open. PISCES (Feb. 19 to Mar. 20) It’s a good time to dive right into a new challenge, whether it’s learning a computer program or how to drive a stick shift, or making a new friend. Whatever it is, good luck. BORN THIS WEEK: You see the wisdom in honesty, and you help others appreciate your vision. c) 2011King Features Synd., Inc.

Talking About Real Estate
Tips on successfully flipping Flipping a piece of Real Estate is a great way to make a buck in this country. Always has been, that’s the American Dream, to buy low and sell high. Even in the market we are in right now, Flipping is a good option for a lot of folks who are tired of the stock market or getting a 1% return on CD’s. However, as with any investment, you have Freeman to be smart about it. Here’s five ways to help ensure that you make a good decision on a property. 1: Do your inspections. So many people when they purchase something for speculation don’t want to spend the money on inspections. They just want to get the property for as cheap as possible and put as little work into it as they can before they sell it for the greatest profit. Not a good idea. Spend the money on at least a Termite, Septic and Home Inspection. Escrows are contingent on the buyer being happy with inspection results. Know what is right and wrong with a property. It is the only way to be able to budget accordingly for repairs. 2: Be patient, especially in this market. Don’t jump on the first property you see, look the market over, talk to professionals in the area, and see whom is buying what. Figure what locations are better than others. A great deal on a great house in a horrible area is a lot worse than an ok deal on a house in a great area. Spend time on research. Find a Real Estate Agent that is honest, trustworthy and works hard, someone who has been working in the area for a few years. 3: Do the repairs right. On a flip, you want a property to be ready to move into, something where a buyer just has to bring their clothes and a
tooth brush. If there is something wrong with the house, fix it. Not only fix it, put it in writing with proof…pictures even. Buyers dig that, they want to see what has been done to a home; it helps them take ownership and makes them feel good about the purchase. More importantly, you are doing right by them and by you. Honesty is not the best policy it is the only policy. 4: Use good materials. I have seen so many houses, especially when the market was really rocking, where a seller had put in sub par materials and workmanship. That flew sometimes in the old market, but not in this market. Buyers are fewer in number and they have more buying power and lenders are more picky about the condition of a home. Don’t go overboard on the very best materials for everything, but use quality stuff that makes sense. Stick with calm paint colors and floors, use cheaper appliances that look good, make sure the home is clean and tidy on the inside and out, etc. 5: Don’t get greedy! Many people lost their shirts when the market collapsed because of greed. Buying a home for 100K and trying to get 300K. Look for fair profit. If a home is worth say 100K at market value, try to get it for 65K, and sell it for 95K. Price it to move so your money turns fast. Making a bit less but selling relatively fast is much better than shooting for the moon and letting your money sit while at the whim of the market. Don’t take anything personal when it comes to a home, this is a business decision. Make sure that decision makes sense for all parties. Quiet expectations Jack Duitsman, pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary still sat in the house. John 11:20 It is a wild misassumption that activity equals value - in other words, the more exhausted we are, the more important must be our pursuit. This misnomer is not only given wide circulation by the frenetically driven culture in which we live, but is also full supported by the human soul in its Duitsman desperate attempt to find worth and meaning in life. If you are not certain of the truth or value of what is being related here, just try sitting silent and inactive for the next sixty minutes. While initially this might sound tantalizingly delightful, we will very likely be driven to distraction and ultimate failure by the thought that such exercise is a total waste of precious time. Because these calm qualities of character are neither valued nor developed, we are often at a loss to see of what worth they might be. Besides, the fault is not ours, for how can we find any quiet in such a noisy world? How sorrowful . . . really. Given the word of the Lord to our hearts in the year 2011, you and I are invited to figure out a way to wade through the merciless demands upon us and quiet our hearts. The beautiful call of quiet expectations may go against all the grain of our present experience, but it is wonderfully in keeping with the heart of the Father Who knows what is
best for the soul health of His children. Notice from the above verse of Scripture, that even in the midst of the most distressing of life's experience, there can come a place of calm assurance and quiet expectation that Jesus is present, and that His presence brings the miraculous in ways that we can not comprehend. The circumstance that surrounded Mary and Martha's responses to the coming of Jesus was the untimely death of their brother Lazarus, and while we may know this narrative ends with a phenomenal resurrection, neither of these women could possibly have dared to even think of such a reality. And so the call comes to us in 2011 - can we find our way to a place of quiet expectation in keeping with the working of the Lord in this season of life? Whatever would seek to shout out the still small voice of the Holy Spirit within us can be declared to stand in direct opposition to the Lord's desires. If we remain driven to exhaustion, distraction, and unbelief by a never ending search for validity (even financial), then the Lordship of Jesus, and His desires to be both our provider and sole source of personal fulfillment will continually be frustrated and missed. How remarkable that Jesus walked into Mary and Martha's circumstance, how amazing that they found a place of trust in His timing and purpose, and how spectacular was the miraculous outcome of His working. Similarly for you and I is the commitment of the Lord to walk us through whatever circumstance we presently face, speak quietly of His ability and willingness to work the miraculous, and all the while show us again and again how loved and cared for we are. Let's find the place of quiet expectation!
