Green fest garners Western attention Mike Devich Kern River Courier
This year’s Kern River Valley Living Green festival, to be held March 17-27, is getting some major publicity in regional magazines. First of all, the fest will be in the March/April Westways magazine’s "Things to Do" column. Nominate local places, events for tourism site Special to the Courier
National Geographic, in partnership with the Sierra Nevada Conservancy and the Sierra Business Council, recently announced the opening of the nomination period for the southern Sierra phase of its Webbased Sierra Nevada Geotourism MapGuide project. From January through the end of April, locals can nominate unique and interesting KRV sites, activities, places to eat, events and much more. They can do this by logging on to the web site www.SierraNevadaGeotourism. org. “The Sierra Nevada region has many iconic symbols that attract millions of visitors annually from around the world,” said SNC Executive Officer Jim Branham. “The Sierra Nevada Geotourism Web site is now making it possible for visitors to learn about hundreds of other less well-known destinations in
the Sierra that will enrich their next visit here.” Such things that the KRV might nominate are events such as festivals, places such as historical points of interest, and unique restaurants and businesses. SBC geotourism project manager Nicole DeJonghe said they’re looking for "the type of information you would get through having dinner with locals." The MapGuide has been sweeping across the Sierra, after successful nomination periods in the Yosemite gateway area and the Tahoe Emigrant Corridor in 2010. Since the MapGuide was created, more than 800 nominations have been highlighted, which have generated more than 45,000 “cyber visitors” to the Sierra. There was a special meeting about the project yesterday, Jan 20, in the Kern River Ranger District’s Kernville Office. The notice of the meeting came in too late to include in last week’s issue.

Welcome to the KRV! Mike Devich Kern River Courier
If you’re visiting the Kern River Valley, you’re wondering what’s to see and do. Well, here is a primer on that very subject. If you love the great outdoors and a slower place where you can relax, enjoy a small-town atmosphere and just breathe easy, this is the place for you. But if you’re looking for excitement, and if you start exploring, you will find a number of the great things we have to offer. If you haven’t noticed yet, the valley is a mecca for water lovers. Fishing is a given. Where can you get a fishing license? At just about every convenience store, marina and even some of the supermarkets.
Boating licenses? Same thing. River rafting? Best to go with a professional service, in season. There are many in the valley. Want a destination to go to? Here are some great ones – Kern Valley Museum in Kernville, Silver City Ghost Town in Bodfish, nice parks such as Riverside and Circle Park in Kernville, Wofford Heights Park and Lake Isabella Park, Reel Cinema in Wofford Heights (brand new big-city movies in an old building with modern movieprojecting equipment), the delightful Old Onyx Store (built in 1861), the Nuui Cunni Indian Cultural Center at French Gulch, and the big sequoias at the Trail of 100 Giants (summer only). Or just take your camera and photograph the old buildings or the fabulous scenery.

Previews of new DVDs by DNA Smith New DVDs reviewed in this column will be available in stores the week of Feb. 1. PICKS OF THE WEEK "Let Me In" (R) -- Chloe Moretz stars as a preteen vampire in this American remake of the cult Swedish original "Let the Right One In." The story revolves around a boy named Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee), whose parents are divorcing Chloe Moretz and who constantly gets picked on at school. He befriends a girl named Abby, who just moved in next door. Little does Owen suspect that Abby is a vampire, and the man claiming to be her father goes out every night killing people to bring back their blood to feed the girl. "Never Let Me Go" (R) -Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield star in this poignant and chilling love story set in a dystopi-

an world where people live into their 100s thanks to the organ farming of their clones. It's kind of like the premise of "The Island" -- only without the explosions and Scarlett Johansson prancing around in a skin-tight cat suit. The film, based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro ("The Remains of the Day"), follows the lives of three clones from their sheltered childhood at an English boarding school, up until young adulthood, where they learn they are meant to be harvested for their organs. When they learn of their fate, the three use what little time left to them to embrace life and love. Kern River Valley Hiking Club issues new 2011 schedule Kern River Courier
http://www.lakeisabella.net/hiking/ The Kern Valley Hiking Club was started in 1987 by Bill and Ruby Jenkins of Kernville to help people explore the splendor of the Southern Sierras and to promote and assist in trail development and maintenance. The group is nonpolitical and nonaffiliated. Most of the hikes are taken from the books "Exploring the Southern Sierra" (which are updated versions of "Selfpropelled in the Southern Sierras", written by their son, Jim Jenkins when he was in his 20s. Jim was killed by an erratic driver in 1979. Ruby took on the job of keeping the information as accurate as possible, hiking the area and making notes until her death in October 2007. Bill recently moved to Thousand Oaks, Calif. to be near family.) Each hike is rated for its difficulty, and each scheduled event is subject to change, depending on weather, snowpack, etc. It is your responsibility to become aware of any changes by accessing the Yahoo group site or the Web site listed at the beginning of this article and calling a club member. The club’s semi-monthly hikes are usually on Saturdays. You need not complete hikes, but always tell someone that you are turning back. Bring lunch and 2+ quarts of water. Sandals are not recommended. Children must always stay with their parents or guardians. Dogs must be leashed. Only physically fit people should try the moderate-to-strenuous hikes. Anyone capable of walking for several miles on rough terrain with elevation gain, regardless of pace, is welcome on all of the hikes. Conventional cars can be driven to trailheads unless otherwise noted. Rain, snow, or lack of a trip leader cancels trips—please check the Yahoo group site and your email if a hike is questionable. RH=Roadhead, where we meet. TH=Trailhead, start of the hike. RT=Round Trip, total length of hike. If you plan to drive directly to a trailhead, bypassing the roadhead, please first confirm the trip is as planned. Roadheads: Greenhorn Summit: Junction of Highway 155 and Rancheria Road in the Greenhorn Mountains. Lake Isabella Park: (with war vehicles)—Lake Isabella Blvd. south of signals. Courier chuckle of the week: “Whose cruel idea was it for the word ‘lisp’ to have an “s” in it?” -- George Carlin
See Page 10 for answers to puzzles
Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The week continues to encourage the forming of new personal relationships and the shoring up of those that might be weakening. New contacts also dominate. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While the bold Bovine might want to move quickly to deal with sudden plan changes, it might be best to wait until you can come up with some solid facts behind the unexpected turn of events. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It's a good week to consider how you'll move on matters both personal and professional. In either case, the more you know about them, the more likely it is that you'll make the right decisions. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Although you might find more colleagues ready to support your plans, some of them could ask for changes you don't approve of. Be ready to defend your position. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This is a good time for Leos and Leonas to think about opportunities that might be outside your usual interests. You could be surprised to find something worth considering. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You can turn a troublesome workplace issue to your advantage by prompting that Virgo penchant for preciseness to take over where all else has failed. An old friend
Kern River Courier
makes contact. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A friend's unexpected work-related news could be a wake-up call to get you to reassess your position. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might want to review a decision to work alone on a project. You might see it as efficient and prudent, but some might see it as unnecessary secretiveness, even for a Scorpio. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don't be put off by a lukewarm response to a recent effort. Perhaps you didn't present a strong enough argument. Rebuild your case with more facts, and try again. Good luck. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A surprise development in the early part of the week could be linked to an ongoing situation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your sensitive side helps you work through an emotionally difficult situation with a minimum of bruised feelings all around. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) While the week still favors new pursuits, some things from the past also make a claim for your attention. The weekend is open for good times with some of the people closest to you. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a wonderful gift for seeing the best in people. c) 2011King Features Synd., Inc.

Things I Have Noticed...
Now that’s really rich Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist
Guess what came today? An official notice from Publishers Clearing House! It said that inside this official envelope was an official document that says my official numbers are there in the official office and need only to be officially drawn! Middleworth Then I win a million dollars a year for the rest of my life. I noticed that the envelope says "Do not discard." Well, of course I won't do that! Not with a million dollars sitting there waiting for me to send in my numbered entry. They say that I don't even have to buy anything. (But they hint that I would be considered a cheapskate by sending only the confirmation sheet and numbers and not ordering something.) Also, I no longer have to buy just books. They have other things, like an enhanced mouse pad, which does all kinds of cyber things for the computer. And if I consider its $12 cost too much, I can send in payments of $3 for the next 4 months. I am all a-twitter, because they are telling me that they won't just send me the million dollars, they will come out to my house, ring my doorbell and hand me my first check personally. (I don't have a doorbell, but today I went to Archie’s Hardware and
bought one and will get it installed tomorrow.) I am also looking forward to the look on the face of my bank person when I tell her I have an account there and could she cash a check for me. She'll say yes and then I'll hand her the Clearing House check for a million dollars and tell her I want it in fives and tens ... no singles. When she's able to talk, I'll relent and tell her that she can deposit it in my account (which currently has about $1.37 in it.) There is lots of other stuff in the envelope. I can play cash bingo, or order adult DVDs (I'm told they come in a discreet package!) The whole contest makes me giddy with anticipation. I did notice some fine print on the back of the entry that says: "This contest closes on February 15th of the year 2015 and the odds of winning are estimated to be One Billion, 215 million, 500 thousand." That's more entries than there are people living in the U.S. Where are they going to put all the return paper? No doubt they have a really big storage shed! But I'm not worried. The envelope says the winning number is in the office waiting for my entry. Too bad about the other 1.3 billion entries. They don't have a chance! Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.

News from Whiskey Flat Kern River Courier

These horses don’t eat much Here’s a humorous entry in last year’s Whiskey Flat Days Parade, a major highlight of the Old West festival held in Kernville each Februrary. Other features are a carnival, an Honorary Mayor contest, street dancing and more. Over 50,000 visitors are expected this year.
Parade Grand Marshal for the dogs Mike Devich Kern River Courier
The Grand Marshal has been named for the 2011 Whiskey Flat Days parade. In keeping with the parade’s theme, “Going to the Dogs,” he is Fred “Bud” May, animal control officer for Kern County. According to the Kernville Chamber of Commerce, riding with him might be Kimberly Mullins, Special
Projects Manager for Kern County Animal Control. Plans are still being worked out. Animal population control is a huge problem not only here in the Kern River Valley, but everywhere. May said they would try to have animals on the float, and maybe they could get some of them adopted. He added that he was very honored to be named Grand Marshal for this year’s parade.
Dagnab it, we wish folks wouldn’t say “Whiskey Flats.” Whiskey Flat Days is an annual celebrashun in Kernville about when the place was called Whiskey Flat, not Whiskey Flats. Anyone who keeps sayin’ Flats belongs in the hoosegow. Ennyways, the big four-day Whiskey Flat Days blowout is Presidents Day weekend, Feb. 18-21 this year. That’s when everybody puts on their Western duds and straps on their Colt .45s and pretends it’s the 1860s all over again. The 1860s was when Kernville was called Whiskey Flat, from 1860 to 1864 – that’s when they changed the name of the town, kinda downplayin’ the whiskey part. Rotgut is what them gold miners wanted after a long day at their claims or workin’ in the Big Blue Mine, something to slake their thirst. Well, the Old West tradition carries on even if the law nowadays doesn’t exactly allow for bein’ falling-down drunk in the streets. One of the biggest things about Whiskey Flat Days is the Honorary Mayor’s race. That’s when some good-natured local folks sign up to make some money for charities (and for the Kernville Chamber of Commerce, of course, so’s they can put on the big festivities every year.) This year there are two teams of people running for the office (it takes more than one

person to steal a high-falutin’ office these days). They are, in no particular order: One Team“Mercantile Frank” Vargas and his wife Sheila, who is running as “Millinery Dolly;” and Another Team - “Whitewater (Lucien) Whitman” and “Mean River Gene” Hacker. Join in on some of the great events the candidates are putting on (see the box on page 3 for a list). There’s a lot of hilarity going on – and fund raising for some great causes.
