As soon as the New Year’s Eve streamers and party poppers have been swept away, it’s full steam ahead for those working on Kernville’s big annual Old West celebration – Whiskey Flat Days. Whiskey Flat Days has that moniker because Kernville’s original name from 1860-64 was Whiskey Flat. Late valley historian Ardis Walker named the event (this year Feb. 18-21) when it was started over 50 years ago. It was timed to take place in the winter to bring visitors here in the off-season. The Honorary Mayor of Whiskey Flat contest is one of the big deals of the fest. This year, two teams are running for the title. They will sell $1 “bribe” tickets during the weeks leading up to the celebra-

With Highway 178 through the Kern River Canyon being closed for the last couple of weeks (it’s open again now), many locals have had to take the long way to Bakersfield, over Walker Pass and around through Mojave and Tehachapi. The Courier was no exception, with the paper being printed in Bakersfield. Last week, passing through Red Rock Canyon, this scene was too tempting for Courier co-publisher Michael Batelann to resist stopping and taking a picture.
Why Sierra Way collapsed This photo shows the “slump” that took out Sierra Way at Stine Cove last week.

As the Kern River Courier’s geology columnist, I thought this might be an appropriate time to give Courier readers a brief analysis of the geological aspects of why the land slump occurred last week on the east flank of Stine Point, which took out a 60-foot section of the Sierra Way roadway. The diagram shown, which was previously published with my column in the March 26, 2010 issue of the Courier, is the definition of a slump landslide. It is distinguished from the other types of landslides by a few characteristics. • The Slump Blocks are typically tilted back and broken, but remain as blocks, as they slide away from steep embankments.
• They will stop moving when the slope flattens. • A toe forms at the base where most of the soil, rocks and debris accumulate. • High catastrophic consequences. • Activated by the presence of water within the soils and bedding planes. You can see in the photo above, taken from the Mt. Mesa side of the lake, that the characteristics shown are somewhat similar to those pointed out in the diagram. The exception is the arcuate nature of the up-slope slumping, where some of the sediments have flowed from above the roadway. This is more typical of rockslides. The reader is probably asking why it happened at Stine Point and not elsewhere. The explana-

What’s here ... and what’s near Mike Devich Kern River Courier
If you’re visiting the Kern River Valley, you’re wondering what’s to see and do. Well, here is a primer on that very subject. First of all, you are visiting a place that is refreshingly behind the times. No Walmarts, no new car dealerships, no Olive Gardens, no casinos, no Best Buys. If you love Nordstrom’s, you’re out of luck around here. But for those who love the great outdoors and a slower place where they can relax, enjoy a small-town atmosphere and just breathe easy, this is the place for you. If you need something or just like shopping, try the local stores and see what they have. You’ll be surprised. Kernville has a number of antique and collectible stores, if you do that sort of thing, only without the tourist-trap high price tags. If you haven’t noticed yet, the valley is a mecca for water lovers. Fishing is a given. Where can you get a fishing license? At just about every convenience store, marina and even some of the supermarkets. Boating licenses? Same thing. River rafting? Best to go with a professional service, in season. There are many in the valley. Want to find out all about camping, campfires and the like? Go to one of the two Forest Service offices in the valley. Addresses are in the box at left. Want a destination to go to? Here are some great ones – Kern Valley Museum in Kernville, Silver City Ghost Town in Bodfish, nice parks such as Riverside and Circle Park in Kernville, Wofford Heights Park and Lake Isabella Park, Reel Cinema in Wofford Heights (brand new big-city movies in
an old building with modern movieprojecting equipment), The Old Onyx Store (built in 1861), the Nuui Cunni Indian Cultural Center at French Gulch, and the big sequoias at the Trail of 100 Giants (summer only). Or just take your camera and photograph the old buildings or the fabulous scenery.

A bit of history Two towns, Kernville and Isabella, had to be moved out of the way during the forming of the lake in the late 1940s and ‘50s. Isabella was moved south and renamed Lake Isabella, and Kernville was moved north. The town of Wofford Heights is closest to the location of Old Kernville; Old Isabella was near where the Auxiliary Dam is today. After the dams came in, realization came that although the water in the dam was not ours to keep, we may use it while it’s here. The area was promoted as a recreation destination and as a perfect area for retirement, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Later on, in the second half of the 20th century, whitewater rafting became a huge sport here. Recently, the valley has become known as a premier mountain biking area, and a mountain bike manufacturer has relocated here. Recreation choices in the area are many. Dry land sports vary from dirt biking to hiking to climbing to dark sky viewing to birding and observing nature at its finest. Be sure to visit all the towns here. Ringing the lake are Kernville, Wofford Heights, Lake Isabella/Bodfish, Mt. Mesa and Southlake. In the South Fork Valley are Weldon and Onyx. Each has its own unique personality and its own story to tell. Leave your big-city ways behind; this is not the city. And we’re kind of proud of that.

Bodfish Bob's Bratwurst Potato Skillet Dinner 2 teaspoons vegetable oil 2 medium potatoes, sliced 2 fully cooked bratwurst links 1 small onion, chopped 1/3 cup chopped green bell pepper 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon orange juice 1/2 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper
In a heavy skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Cook the potatoes until they are lightly browned and crisp-tender, about 6 minutes. Add the bratwurst, onion, and green bell pepper. Stirring occasionally, cook until the vegetables are crisp-tender and heated through, 5 to 10 minutes. Combine the soy sauce, orange juice, basil, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Stir the sauce mixture into the meat and vegetables, and heat through.
Sauté the onions in butter and oil in a heavy skillet over medium heat until they are soft and begin to take on color. Add boiling broth and wine and blend over medium heat, about 5 minutes. Serve in heated bowls with the Parmesan cheese and the crisp slices of hot toast.
Previews of new DVDs by DNA Smith New DVDs reviewed in this column will be available in stores the week of Jan. 17. PICKS OF THE WEEK "Buried" (R) -- Hands up: Who wants to see Ryan Reynolds buried alive? Yeah, me too. Well, in "Buried" we get our wish. Reynolds stars as Paul Conroy, a truck driver who wakes up to find himself buried in a coffin under 6 feet of earth with nothing but a cell phone that's running out of juice, a lighter and about 90 minutes of oxygen. With time running out on him, Ryan Reynolds Conroy needs to piece together enough clues to determine his location so he can call for help (that is, if the cell phone doesn't go dead first). Demonstrating an almost Hitchcockian finesse, director Rodrigo Cortes does a remarkable job not only in finding impressive ways of shooting in such a confined space, but in keeping the dramatic tension taut as piano wire throughout the entire film. Well, director Roel Reine (yeah, I never heard of him either) has managed to make this direct-to-DVD production a complete snooze-fest. Worst of all, he cast Danny Trejo, one of the most badass actors on the planet, as a wise-cracking mechanic. Save your money and avoid this abomination. Time for a new 2011 fishing license Kern River Courier
It’s that time of year again. Anglers must buy a new fishing license. A California sport fishing license offers a full year of more fishing opportunities than any other state in the country. California has 1,100 miles of ocean coastline, 4,172 lakes and reservoirs, 29,664 miles of streams and rivers, and 1,800 miles of bay and delta waters. A sport fishing license is an angler’s passport to these amazing opportunities. In addition to native fresh and saltwater fish, the DFG trout hatcheries will plant roughly 7 million rainbow trout in 2011 and salmon hatcheries annually release more than 20 million young salmon.
Anglers 16 years or older are required to have a valid sport fishing license to take any kind of fish, mollusk, invertebrate or reptile (except for rattlesnakes). Along with a sport fishing license, the DFG California Fishing Passport Program challenges anglers to fish their way around the state in search of 150 different fish and shellfish species. And like a traveler’s passport book, for each successful catch, participants will receive special stamps in their books to mark their accomplishments. For more information about the Passport Program, please visit www.dfg.ca.gov/fishingpassport. To learn more about fishing licenses, go to www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing.

Floods temporarily close Preserve Kern River Preserve
Every 50 years or so the Kern River Valley gets walloped with a period of extended rains that wash out lots of roads and culverts. It seems this winter might be that winter. Kern County was declared a state disaster area by Governor Schwarzenegger after the December 17-19 storm. Although damage to buildings around the preserve thankfully has been minimal, the damage to road infrastructure is a bit more intense, so the Kern River Preserve will be closed to vehicle traffic while we wring out and our staff can replace culverts. Anyone is welcome to walk in as long as it is safe. Beginning Friday, December 17th, the rain gauge at the Sprague Ranch section of the preserve recorded over 9" of rain over 4 days. The rains began to fall in the wee hours of December 17th and Kern Valleyites would normally expect them to taper off by mid morning and
stop, but this was no ordinary rainstorm. Never a deluge but a steady tenth-inch by tenth-inch, the rain kept falling. By the end of Day One just over an inch had fallen. By day two, the rains increased to over two-tenths an hour delivering a whopping 2.75" by the end of the day. This continued on day three with a similar steady amount falling. We watched the South Fork gauging station go from the 52 cfs recorded at midnight to an astounding 5120 cfs. This overtopped the road at Fay Ranch Road with a raging flood within nine hours. The pavement was ripped away with large holes silently waiting to trap unsuspecting motorists in unseen chasms. The bright spot on the preserve was the buildings remained intact. However, all roads, culverts and canals suffered serious damage or were destroyed. A lot of work is ahead for our small staff. Please help our general fund to help with the repairs.

Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Aspects call for care in preparing material for submission. You might find it bothersome to go over what you've done, but rechecking could be worth your time and effort. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The week is favorable for Bovines who welcome change. New career opportunities wait to be checked out. You might also want to get started on that home makeover. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might have to be extra careful to protect that surprise you have planned, thanks to a certain snoopy someone who wants to know more about your plans than you're willing to share. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Family ties are strong this week, although an old and still-unresolved problem might create some unpleasant moments. If so, look to straighten the situation out. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although the Lion might see it as an act of loyalty and courage to hold on to an increasingly shaky position, it might be wiser to make some changes now. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be open with your colleagues about your plan to bring a workplace matter out into the open. They'll want to know how you'll pull it off. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Trying to patch up an unraveling relationship is often easier said than done. But it helps to discuss and work out any problems that arise along the way. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While your creative aspect remains high this week, you might want to call on your practical side to help work out the why and wherefore of an upcoming decision. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Dealing with someone's disappointment can be difficult for Aquarians, who always try to avoid giving pain. A show of sympathy can work wonders. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting a jobrelated matter past some major obstacles should be easier this week. A personal situation might take a surprising turn by the week's end. Kern River Courier
From vintage postcard
The bridge over the Kern River near Old Kernville is shown, date unknown, but pre1949.
Valley history: town of Kernville The beginnings of Kernville started in 1860. The story is that a man named Lovely Rogers found a rock with flecks of gold in it on a hillside overlooking the Kern River. He picked up the rock to throw at his recalcitrant mule, when he saw the flecks of gold in it. Instead of throwing it, Rogers took the rock to another miner and was told it was well-paying ore. Gold miners started to pour in, coming from the west over Greenhorn Mountain or through the Keyesville area, from the south through Walker Basin or from the east over Walker’s Pass. An entrepreneur by the name of Adam Hamilton heard about the gold strike and came over Greenhorn Mountain, his mules laden with barrels of whiskey. He set up his barrels near Rogers’ gold find, and started a saloon. By mutual agreement his saloon was quickly moved down the river about a mile on a little flat spot by the river, and the town of Whiskey Flat quickly grew up around it. Four years later, in 1864, the townspeople opted to rename the town Kernville. Kernville existed in that location for almost 100 years, long after the gold played out. It was located just northeast of the modern-day town of Wofford Heights. Kernville saw a lot of changes happen to the Kern River Valley. Cattle ranching started to become important in a big way. In the early 1900s electrical engineers from the city of Los Angeles came looking at the Kern River for hydropower harnessing. Then Hollywood came calling, and Kernville became a popular place to make Western films. In the late 1940s, the decision was made to put a government flood control reservoir in the Kern River Valley, and Kernville residents were told they had to move to higher ground. They decided to form a New Kernville a few miles north, and that’s where the town still is today. Old Kernville is still remembered fondly by many longtime residents of the Kern River Valley. —– Kern River Courier

Blades lose their edge Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist
As each winter arrives and I grow older, I’ve noticed that I'm not as sharp as I was the year before. Instead of counting time from my birthdays I use January 1st as my judgment day. Let me give you an example of the dulling of Middleworth my sharpness. Around the first of the year my wife said to me, “I've noticed that the hot water is not very hot.” Well, I said, I can fix that, I will turn the adjustment knob on the water heater to a higher position and it should get hotter. (Unless the thermostat is on the fritz.) Well, the water didn't get any hotter. In fact, she said it was even cooler. I went out to the adjustment knob and determined that it was turned as far right as it could go. But the water wasn't getting any hotter. In fact, the heater wasn't even heating. So I called a plumber (at $45 an hour). When he arrived I asked for his advice; would I need a new thermostat valve or a new heater? "Well, let’s see," he said. Both of us got down on our knees with flashlights in hand and looked at the thermostat valve. While I'm looking, he takes the little red adjustment
knob and turns it to the LEFT. The heater kicked on and started heating. I said. "What was that? What did you do?" He said, "I just turned the adjustment knob to the higher heat position". I knelt there, stunned. Obviously I had been turning the knob the wrong way. Every time I thought I had adjusted it to a higher heat it went even lower. In my defense, I had to stand on my head with a flashlight and look at the thing again. The knob does look like it should adjust higher by going to the RIGHT. But it’s the opposite. I was stricken and the plumber just looked at me. He was nice and tried to make me feel better by saying that at least I didn't need a water heater or thermostat ... yet. As I wrote out a check for a 10-minute 45 dollar visit, I was mentally kicking myself in the tush. I can assure you that the next time he comes, I will really need him. And that's why in my later years, my wife no longer looks at me with adoring eyes and thinks I can fix everything. And frankly, I no longer think so either! Obituary notice Thomas Ratican Nov. 19, 1926 – December 12, 2010 Thomas Ratican was born in Hollywood, Calif. He inherited his love of actiing, directing and writing scripts from his father, who was involved in the motion picture industry. He also worked for the L.A. Metro Water and Power Co. for 21 years. Tom and his wife, Naomi, moved to Havilah in 1995. Naomi passed away in 1997. They had a great love for the little community of Havilah. Tom served as the president of the Havilah Centennial Group for nine years. He was well-known for his artwork, especially his pen and ink drawings of famous old-time cowboy movie actors, which for many years were published in the monthly Fencepost publication. Tom had a great sense of humor, and a sweet-natured disposition. He devoutly loved animals, especially dogs (his own and everybody else’s!) He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Rose Ratican of Arizona, and a niece in Poway, Calif.
Death notices are $5. Full obituaries, as shown above, are $20, or $25 with a photo. For more information, call the Courier at (760) 3762860 during office hours weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
tion is fundamental to the geology of our valley. You may recall from my column how the “Roof Pendants” of our valley were formed. Briefly, in review, they are thousands of feet of sedimentary layers that were laid down through millions of years of oceanic deposition. Then the Sierran Batholith of granitic material began to rise, pushing these sediments upward as erosional forces began cutting into the softer sediments, slowly shaping our valley through the millennia. What remains at Stine Point (as well as at Robinson Point) are vertically standing metasediments. This is the essence of the weaknesses of these vertically standing, “incompetent” shales, sandstones, siltstones and mudstones. When these rocks are moistened by water (in this case excessive amounts of water!), the “platety”
clays present within these rocks become water-lubricated, swollen and very slippery, and lose the ability to withstand the force of gravity. They then slip along the nowvertical depositional bedding planes like the leaves of a book, resulting in a landslide called a slump. (If these rocks had been horizontally-oriented, it would have been more difficult for them to move across the more resistive bedding planes, thus landslides would be less apt to occur – but not impossible.) In summary, any of the areas within our valley where the metasediments are vertically-oriented are extremely vulnerable to this type of mass land movement, under the right conditions. It is prudent that the reader be aware of the dangers and observe safe reticence when locating structures that could be destroyed by the forces of gravity and water.

Tasmazia is in Tasmania Clarence Semonious, pastor Prince of Peace Lutheran Fellowship, Kernville
My goal was to understand Isaiah 42:2-3, “He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice.” The usual commentaries offered worn out and outof-date percepSemonious tions. Not that they are untrue; they might be compared to 1Corinthians 10:23 “‘All things are lawful,’ but not all things are helpful. ‘All things are lawful,’ but not all things build up.” Then I found a minister, Richard Schwedes, who wrote about his visit to Tasmazia, a series of eight mazes in Tasmania. He described the experience as an exercise in frustration. Does not life include exasperating circumstances from which there appears to be no satisfactory way out? In fact, amazing originally meant “To bewilder; perplex.” Bewildering, perplexing and frustrating is what life today often appears to be. In fact, chapters 40-42 appear to be written to the exiles, encouraging a trust in God, and an assurance of His rescue. The read-
er is amazed – in the original sense. I tell you now, we do not know a life where a very large portion of Americans have been killed or taken to another country as captives. The maze that has Americans bewildered, perplexed and frustrated is the idea that our behavior makes us good. Isaiah gave Israel God’s judgment before he gave God’s comfort. St. John’s letter says, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1John 1:8-9 As a teen, a teacher explaining Bible study methods suggested letting a Bible fall open, closing one’s eyes, placing a finger on the page and reading that verse. My verse was, “How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.” Luke 6:42. St. John’s and Isaiah’s words may provide a way out. Is this a way out of your maze in 2011? Happy New Year.
