Serving the Kern River & Isabella Lake Communities
weekend weather Friday low 69° Slight chc TStorm
Reuters News Service reports that more than 24 people have died as a result of the heat wave blanketing much of the Midwest and eastern states. Now the heat wave is moving to the west coast and into the Kern Valley with temperatures above 100. According to the National Weather Service, heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year. In fact, on average, excessive heat claims more lives each year than floods, lightning, tornadoes and hurricanes combined. There are several hazards in excessive heat. When the body heats too quickly to cool itself safely, or when you lose too much fluid or salt through dehydration or sweating, your body temperature rises and heat-related illness may develop. Studies indicate that, other things being equal, the severity of heat disorders tends to increase with age. Conditions that cause heat cramps in a 17-year-old may result in heat exhaustion in someone 40 years old, and in heat stroke in a person over 60. Sunburn, with its ultraviolet radiation burns, can significantly retard the skin's ability to shed excess heat. Children, adults and pets enclosed in parked vehicles are at great risk. Each year, dozens of children left in parked vehicles die from hyperthermia, an acute condition that occurs when the body absorbs more heat than it can handle. The temperature inside a parked vehicle can rapidly rise to a dangerous level for children, pets and even adults. Leaving the windows slightly open does not significantly decrease the heating rate.
Cooling centers to be made available Senior citizens and others at risk from heat can find relief at cooling centers across Kern County. Residents using the centers should bring their own books, puzzles or games to pass the time. The Kern River Valley Senior Center/Veterans Building at 6405 Lake Isabella Boulevard, Lake Isabella is the cooling center for the Kern River Valley. If you need transportation to the cooling center, call Kern Regional Transit at 800-560-1733. In addition, Kern County Libraries will be open during their scheduled business hours. The criterion for opening cooling centers is the National Weather Service forecast temperatures as of the previous day. The San Joaquin Valley / Kern River Valley Centers criterion is 105 degrees. For up to date information, call 800-510-2020 or log onto www.co.kern.ca.us and click on the cooling center link. dining

Sequoia fire restrictions begin July 14 Mary Chislock, U.S. Forest Service Special to the Courier In response to the increasing potential for a wildland fire start, Sequoia officials have announced fire restrictions in the Sequoia National Forest and the Giant Sequoia National Monument until further notice. Beginning July 14, 2012, the following forest restrictions will be in effect: ■ Visitors must have a valid California Campfire Permit in their possession for any type of fire use. (Permits are available free of charge and not required in a developed recreation site or campground.) ■ Wood campfires, charcoal fires and barbecues are prohibited outside of developed recreation sites and campgrounds and only allowed in developed recreation sites or campgrounds. ■ Smoking is prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle, building, or developed recreation site. ■ Lanterns and portable stoves using gas, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel

outside of developed recreation sites or campgrounds, are allowed only with a valid California Campfire Permit. ■ Forest visitors must clear all flammable material five feet in all directions from their camp stove, have a shovel available, and ensure that a responsible person attends the stove at all times when in use. ■ Within the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument internal combustion engines may be operated only on designated roads and trails. Make sure your engine is tuned, operating properly and has an approved spark arrester. There are no exempt areas outside of campgrounds or developed recreation sites from the above restrictions within the 1.2 million acre Sequoia National Forest. These restrictions will remain in place until the end of the fire season, normally in late autumn. Further restrictions may be imposed if the fire danger increases. Anyone causing a wildfire could be liable for all costs associated with suppressing the fire. For additional information visit the Forest Service website at: www.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia. nature

Christmas in July, Bell Ringing Fund Raiser The Salvation Army has just two major fundraising drives each year. This year the need is greater than in previous years. The Army is asking for volunteers to help raise funds during the annual “Christmas in July” fundraiser. The local Salvation Army Service Unit is trying to assist as many local families and individuals as possible. The requests for prescription, medical, food, utility and transportation assistance is rising. Volunteers are needed to help with “Christmas in July.” Bell ringers are needed around the Valley. All funds raised here remain in the Kern River Valley to help local friends and neighbors. As a 100 percent volunteer unit, more than 90 percent of the funds raised reach the needy. Current funds are getting low and the Salvation Army will not be able to continue at the current level of assistance through this fall, into the Christmas season and on through winter if funds are not forthcoming. Contact your local Salvation Army office at 6105 Lake Isabella Blvd., in Lake Isabella or call 760-379-4600. Open Monday and Wednesday for services and Tuesdays and Thursdays for special needs. Contributions may be mailed to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 2786, Lake Isabella, CA 93240.
Non Profit to host low cost “Fix Your Pets” clinic “Animal overpopulation is a tragic problem everywhere, but especially in many rural small towns near Bakersfield, primarily because low income pet owners can’t afford the high costs to fix their pets and don’t have access to low-cost clinics,” said Ha Adolfo, founder of the Basic Needs Foundation. That’s why the organization is hosting a low-cost “Fix Your Pets” mobile clinic for low income pet owners in the Kern River Valley. The clinic will take place on Saturday, August 25 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of Vons, located at 5610 Lake Isabella Blvd., Lake Isabella. Up to 49 animals will be spayed or neutered at this event. Low-cost vaccinations and microchipping will also be available from 9 a.m. until noon. “Our main focus is to fix medium or large dogs weighing 40 pounds or more. Big dogs have more puppies per litter than smaller dogs,” said Adolfo. To schedule an appointment, call 1-888-504-SPAY (7729). The event is sponsored by Basic Needs Foundation.

Salome’s Stars ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) You’re wise to let your skepticism question a former adversary’s request to let bygones be bygones. Time will tell if he or she is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. TAURUS (Apr. 20 to May 20) Congratulations. Your hard work soon pays off with some welldeserved recognition. Meanwhile, that important personal relationship needs more attention. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) That new person in your life seems trustworthy, but don’t turn him or her into a confidant just yet. Remember: The secret you don’t reveal is the one you won’t lose sleep over. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your kindness makes a difference in someone’s life. But by week’s end, a touch of envy could create a problem with a colleague. Take care to keep it under control. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) A new spurt of energy sends you back into that challenging work situation. But be careful not to overdo it, or your sizzle could fizzle before your task is completed. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Your practical sense helps you see the logic of being a bit more flexible with a workplace colleague. But you still have a ways to go before there’s a true meeting of
the minds. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) A surprise situation could cause you to spend more money than you feel you can afford. Careful budget adjustments will help. Your fiscal picture soon brightens. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) That decision you made might still have its detractors, but your supporters are growing. Meanwhile, your personal life takes on some welcome new developments. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Matters of the mind intrigue the sage Sagittarian through week’s end. By then, you should feel more than ready to make room for pursuits of the heart. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) The canny Capricorn can offer good counsel to others. But how about taking some advice yourself from a close friend who is able and ready to help? AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) A new workplace opportunity offers a variety of challenges that you might find intriguing. Best advice: Take things one step at a time so that you don’t feel overwhelmed. PISCES (Feb. 19 to Mar. 20) A bid to revive a relationship that ended on a bitter note needs to be carefully thought out before you can even begin to consider plunging into a new emotional commitment. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “Silent House” (R) — What could be a more boring, safe, non-terrorizing experience than cleaning out an old lake house? How about a lake house that hasn’t been used in years, and has had every possible entry and exit nailed shut? This remake of a low-budget flick from Argentina puts Sarah (the ascending Elizabeth Olsen) in just such a creaky old home, trapped, in the dark, all alone except for the shadowy figures lurking just out of sight. The whole movie is in real-time, seemingly done in a single shot that follows Sarah. No convenient intermissions, no scene transitions or alternate locations, just the audience trapped along with the victim. Those aching for terror and suspense can rent a room down at Silent House, where you can’t scream or the bad people will find you. “The Deep Blue Sea” (R) — This tragic and romantic film tells the story of Hester (Rachel Weisz), a woman trapped in a loveless marriage and powerless to stop her passionate romance with another man. All beautifully shot in the rich tones of post-war London, the movie hands Weisz a serious role, and she hands back a serious performance. Hester’s husband is a stuffy, wealthy old judge who supplies her
Elizabeth Olsen in “Silent House” with a life in the upper-crust, and not much else. Hester’s other man is Freddie (Tom Hiddleston, Loki from “The Avengers”), a veteran pilot from the war now looking for work. You may not like Hester, but you will feel something for her as she swims in a sea of passion and conflict. “Jiro Dreams of Sushi” (PG) — You don’t have to be a fan of sushi to get the appeal of this unique documentary. Jiro Ono is revered as the best sushi chef in the world, and a national treasure to the Japanese. He also works in a tiny restaurant in a subway station where people make reservations months in advance to see the master at work. The film is an engaging portrait of a modern ascetic, somebody who’s dedicated to a singular craft. It also shows the complicated relationship between the 85year-old Jiro and his oldest son, Yoshikazu, who is expected to fill his father’s shoes one day. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Bodfish Bob’s Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers fresh jalapenos (about 2 inches in size) cream cheese, softened regular bacon, sliced into thirds Bodfish Bob’s Bacon Wrapped Weenies 10 hot dogs, cut into thirds 15 slices bacon, cut in half 1/2 cup packed brown sugar Wrap 1/2 slice of bacon around each piece of hot dog. Secure the bacon with a toothpick. Place hot dogs into a slow cooker on low heat. Pour brown sugar over hot dogs, let cook for 5 to 6 hours; until the bacon is cooked. Bodfish Bob’s Hogs and Kisses 8 slices bacon 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips Cut bacon in half. Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet, and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain the bacon slices
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cut jalapenos in half, length-wise. Remove seeds. Fill each jalapeno half with cream cheese. Wrap each jalapeno with a slice of bacon (1/3 regular slice). Secure bacon by sticking a toothpick through the middle of each jalapeno. Bake on a pan with a rack in a 375 degree oven for 20-25 minutes. (You don’t want the bacon to shrink so much it starts to squeeze the filling out of the jalapeno) If after 25 minutes the bacon does not look cooked, turn your broiler on for a couple of minutes to cook the bacon (keep a close eye while you’re using the broiler!) Tastes best when served hot. Visit Bodfish Bob on the internet at www.bodfishbob.com or email him at bodfishbob @hotmail.com

Turtle,
Continued from page 1 longer prevail in the area. Volunteers, under the leadership of Bill Foster, constructed two ponds at the Preserve's Sprague Ranch, which were fenced and covered with shade cloth to protect the young turtles. Solar heating units were installed to help keep the water above freezing during the winter months. A number of turtles were collected from locations in the Kern River Valley in May-June each year, measured and given identifying numbers. The females are separated out, taken to a veterinarian where they are xrayed to determine if they are carrying eggs and the vet induces egg-laying. The eggs were then were taken by volunteers and placed in incubators at their homes to hatch. It takes 64 to 80 days for the eggs to hatch. Once they begin to hatch it takes about 18 hours for them to emerge from their shells. Once hatched the turtles were hand raised by volunteers to a size large enough to be safely returned to the ponds. Baby turtles are raised to 4-5 inches in size to help them become predator-proof, raised in ponds at the Preserve to reach that size.
Adventures >
As the turtles grew they were taken from the Sprague Ranch ponds and returned to the natural ponds where the adult females had been collected, about 6-8 were returned to the Prince Ranch Pond and the remainder to Alexander Ranch Pond. Over the program’s six year duration about 60 turtles have been raised and released. This year's transfer of the 16 young turtles completes the project. It is hoped that this increase in the turtle population will continue to grow in nature, and once again make the Western Pond Turtle a local sight in the Valley. The Western Pond Turtle is the only native turtle on the west coast ranging from Baja California, to British Columbia, Canada. Project volunteers walked in to release the turtles, through a salt grass and lizard tail plants path. When they arrived there were 5-6 adult turtles in the Alexander pond that came in appearing curious, seeming to know why they were there or maybe just remembering their past. The adult turtles are now 8 -10 inches. More information can be found at the Kern River Preserve Visitors Center at 18747 Hwy 178 in Weldon. The Preserve is open every day of the year from dawn to dusk.

For God so loves us! Jack Duitsman, Pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. - John 3:16 The above verse Duitsman is without doubt the most oft-quoted verse in the New Testament (only outmatched by the 23rd Psalm), and because of this familiarity, we run the risk of holding this passage in a kind of spiritual contempt. Another quick scan may reveal what we are talking about, for even in this writing, I find myself lulled into near trance-like state by the time I reach the end of another reading. What a tragedy of epic proportions! Within this verse is the linchpin truth upon which the purposes of God hang within each of our lives. Should we miss what is contained herein, we will forever be thwarted from coming to terms with Who our Heavenly Father is, and as a consequence, who we can become as His children. Conversely, should we but grasp even the smallest of portions of the love of the Father that is poured out upon us in Jesus our Lord and Savior; we stand to gain

access into kingdom understanding in ways only dreamed. A lifetime could be spent probing the deep mysteries of the Scriptures, yet at the end we would return to the truth of this verse and realize that in understanding the fathomless love of the Father we find the key to understanding all other mysteries. With such being the case, we are invited again to ponder that which is so familiar to us, and like children, acknowledge our utter dependence upon our Father to reveal His great heart for us. Unrelated to our performance - either historic or current we are embraced solely for who we are, and invited to revel in what we could never earn even through the most perfect of performances. Unrelated to our understanding, and capacity to return love similarly, we are wooed by the Holy Spirit to return love as we are able, and believe that the Father is deeply touched by our childlike simplicity. While our minds may find reasons to disbelieve the love of the Father, yet the deepest places of our heart thrill at the truth of what has been eternally known. While our circumstances or the shape of the world’s history may paint a far different picture than that of a loving Father completely committed to His children’s wellbeing and blessing, let us embrace the truth of John 3:16 as the declaration that has set us free, and will continue to set us free for an eternity.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on the notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgages, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 661-945-5525 using the file number 12-2210. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet web site. The best way to verify the postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. David Ramsey Kern River Courier Columnist Dear Dave, My husband and I would like for me to be able to quit my job and stay at home with our kids. We’ve got a little money saved up, but we’re not sure we could Ramsey make it on just his salary. The money would be very tight. In your mind, how do we know the difference between being financially responsible and relying on God to provide? -Michelle Dear Michelle This is a great question! I admire the desire to be at home with your kids, and that you realize you can’t just act impulsively and call it faith. This is a concept that’s misused and misunderstood a lot. If you can’t make it on just your husband’s salary, then you’ve got to develop a plan that involves a written monthly budget and some lifestyle changes. If you do this with diligence and sacrifice, chances are you’ll be able to make this happen. You could also start a small business on the side something you could do from home to offset the difference. Having faith that God will provide requires study of the Scriptures. But God also tells us that you need the maturity and wisdom to plan your direction. The Bible says, “The diligent prosper. He who is impulsive exalts
folly.” Folly is a fool in action. It’s kind of like the guy who closes his eyes, jumps in the pool, and hopes there’s water in there - and calls that faith. I love the idea of you coming home to be with your kids, Michelle. Just make sure you develop an intelligent plan, and mix intellect with faith. -Dave Dear Dave, One of my husband’s credit card bills was turned over to a collection agency. They’ve offered three different payment options. If we accept one of the options, does this mean the original creditor accepts the agreement as well? -Cheryl Dear Cheryl, In a situation like this, the collection agency either owns the debt outright or they’re directly representing the credit card company. This is pretty much standard operating procedure when someone has defaulted on a loan. I’d go ahead with the deal they’ve offered that makes the most sense for you. You’ll have a ding on your credit report, showing settlement on a defaulted credit card, but it’s really no big deal since you’ve already got a mark against you for having it turned over to collections. -Dave Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers.
