The annual fireworks show over the lake is on Saturday night, July 3. The bursts are reflected in the water, as seen in this shot from last year. The show starts about 9 p.m. It’s sponsored by the Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce and is funded through donations from the public, so please put money in the canisters you see in local businesses. The fireworks are shot off from Engineers Point and the show can be seen from many areas. Fees at the Auxiliary Dam campground area will be waived from 7 p.m. until the end of the show.

If a nice healthy lake level has any kind of a negative side at all, it may be that the parking and camping areas are reduced.

This lake is really a reservoir, so the level goes up and down. Right now it is a little higher than it has been in a while.

In order to accommodate anticipated crowds, the Sequoia National Forest has decided to open up a couple of additional camping areas for the big Independence Day weekend.

Forest Service fire units, in conjunction with Kern County Fire Department and BLM, will be on an alert standby during the fireworks show, which will start at about 9 p.m. Saturday.

Larson said, “The agencies look forward to helping the public attend a wonderful show while minimizing the risk of wildfires. To aid in this task, fire officials ask residents and visitors to acquire a campfire permit and follow the regulations if they plan to build a fire or barbecue or operate a camp stove.

“Ensure cigarettes are completely out before disposing of them and do not bring fireworks of any kind, as they are illegal to discharge or possess in the Kern River Valley.”

Things I Have Noticed...

Some years back, before we moved to the Kern River Valley, we were avid motorcycle enthusiasts. Whenever we could we would ride. There is a certain feeling that comes with biking. The smells of the countryside, the breeze of the ocean, the sensaMiddleworth tion of speed.

Our bike was a GL 1000 Honda Goldwing, big and fast.

Over the years we visited Yosemite, Mexico, Canada, Death Valley, Yellowstone, Tahoe, and all of the coastal places along California’s Highway 1. In fact we toured 15 western states in a twoyear period. We never had problems, but we did have some great adventures and unusual happenings that we've never forgotten.

For instance, we had one trip down the Baja Mexico Transpeninsular Highway (which runs the length of Baja, mostly along beach towns.) We stayed at this one beautiful hotel near Cabo San Lucas and had dinner. While visiting their gift shop, I bought a pullover sweater made of flax. It was unusual, warm and definitely a Mexico souvenir. I was pleased with it and immediately put it on as the evening air was a bit chilly.

noticed the store’s trash bins overflowing with empty boxes. On the outside of each it said what had been inside. Many were stenciled “Made in China.” One of the boxes said “Corded Pullover Sweater” and had a picture of the one I was wearing. So much for my Baja Mexico/Chinese pullover.

On another trip, this time to Yellowstone, we had planned to stay one night in a small cabin near the lodge. No inside plumbing, just lights, an electric heater, and a bed for our sleeping bags.

The bathroom was an outhouse (that was quite an adventure) in an area common to four other cabins and 50 feet from ours.

Next morning we opened the door to 24 inches of snow and a blizzard. Motorcycles don't drive well in the snow, so we were stuck there for three days until the roads were cleared. This was August!

For those three days we went to movies, read, walked in the snow, watched Old Faithful blow uncounted times, and attended lectures about the valley. It turned out to be a great experience, well worth the delay.

Reality finally settled in when we got home and were met with temperatures over 100 degrees.

Vacation was over!

AARP car insurance discount program to be held July 15 The next AARP 55/Alive Program will be held Thursday, July 15 from 8 to 5 p.m. (an all day class) at St Peters Church, 11900 Sierra Way, Kernville, across the street from the Hi Ho Trailer Park. Participants must attend the entire day. The course does not involve driving, but does emphasize safe driving procedures for older drivers. In California, a certificate of course completion usually entitles the student to a reduction in their auto insurance for three years following the date of the class. Valley history: Kernville Power Plant The official name for the Southern California Edison power plant in Kernville is KR3, meaning “Kern River No. 3.” KR1 is at the mouth of the lower canyon, and Borel Power Plant is near Bodfish (it was completed before KR1 and is No. 2 in the series, although it has retained its original name).

KR1 and Borel were operating to provide electricity for the city of Los Angeles by 1905. Meanwhile, a spot just above Fairview was filed upon to become the intake site for the long pipeline to feed river water down into the KR3 turbines.

By 1910, the Edison Company had a rough wagon road upriver as far as what is now known as Road's End (and it was the end of the road at the time). The camp that was set up at this spot later became called Camp 8, and was the uppermost in a series of camps to be used in construction of KR3.

The hub of the KR3 job was located just above the town of Riverkern and was known as Headquarters Camp. The U.S. Forest Service later built a recreation campground there, keeping the same name as the original Edison camp.

It was not until March of 1919 that construction work finally began on the power plant itself. After the foundation was in, the major construction of the plant – including installation of the generators – centered around a crane rated at 65 tons. The main arm for this crane weighed 20 tons, and it was quite a job to haul it over the rough dirt roads from Caliente and get it installed at the powerhouse. (The Kern River Canyon road was not a reality yet.)

As soon as the major portion of the powerhouse was constructed, the forebay and penstocks were constructed. A hoist that pulled cars loaded with materials and supplies, located a half-mile above the plant, played a big part in this phase of construction. It was a tough job, but the plant opened in 1921 and has been a landmark in Kernville ever since.

The Southern California Edison Company and hydropower have played a huge role over the years in the history of the Kern River Valley.

Rescue calls hopeless upriver Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier Columnist

The river flow is up a little this week, still hanging around 2,800 cubic feet per second. The hatchery crew, including myself, stocked the upper and lower Kern River, upper and lower Peppermind campgrounds, the Tule River, Camp Nelson, Cedar Slope, Coy Flats, Belknap, Wishon, and Coffee Camp.

While I was a couple miles north of the county line, I heard screaming.

A couple was stranded in the middle of the river. I immediately dialed 911 on my cell phone to find no service. I had to drive to Riverkern to call. I kept getting the runaround as I was routed around from Kern County 911 to Tulare County 911. It took 15 minutes just on the phone to get some help!

There doesn’t seem to be any 911

service in that part of Tulare County, on a very fast and dangerous river!

There should be an overlap. The couple was very lucky and was rescued, but it took a long time.

The lake has risen a little, hardly noticeable. The lake clarity is excelent. This week the fishing has slowed way down. The full moon may have had some effect. The bass bite is slow, some topwater action reported. I noticed the crappie are not schooled up yet. I got one fish here, two fish there. They’re catching small catfish on red and white jigs.

It’s a great time to learn to fish for carp as the lake has lots of them.

I’ll try to give the best way to fish for these “aquadillos” in the next issue.

Recipes for Dummies by Bodfish Bob plate. Discard cooking liquor. Pour BBQ sauce into a bowl. Brush ribs with sauce. Pour any remaining sauce over ribs in the slow cooker.

Cover and cook for 1 hour on low setting. 4 servings.

Bodfish Bob's Burrito Casserole 1 lb. Ground beef 1 sm. Onion, diced Salt, Pepper Garlic salt 1 pkg. Dry taco mix 1 small can tomato sauce 2 16 oz. Jars salsa 3 C. Taco cheese, shredded 2 cans refried beans 6 large flour tortillas Black olives, sliced

Bodfish Bob's Cola Slow Cooker Ribs 3 1/2 pounds Baby Back ribs 1/4 cup packed Brown Sugar 1/2 tsp ground Black pepper 3 TBSP Liquid smoke flavoring 3 clove Garlic (chopped) 1 tsp Salt 1 med Onion (thin sliced) 1/2 cup Cola 1 1/2 cup favorite BBQ sauce

Spray inside of slow cooker with vegetable spray. Remove membrane from back of ribs. Cut and pull with a paper towel to remove. This makes ribs St. Louis style and improves the transfer of tastes. Mix brown sugar, pepper, liquid smoke, and salt. Rub mixture into ribs. Cut ribs to 4 bone sections. Layer ribs and onions into slow cooker. Pour cola over ribs.

Cover and cook for 8 to 9 hours on low or until tender. Remove ribs and

Layer 2 large tortillas on top of this, cutting pieces off sides to fill in corners, if necessary. Spread meat mixture on tortillas and sprinkle with 1 C. Of the cheese. Cover with 2 more tortillas. Spread with warmed refried beans and sprinkle with 1 C. Cheese.

Cover with 2 more tortillas. Pour remaining jar of Salsa over this.

Sprinkle with remaining cheese.

Garnish with olives. Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes. Let set 10 minutes before serving.

"Twilight at the World of Tomorrow: Genius, Madness, Murder, and the 1939 World's Fair on the Brink of War"

Writer James Mauro was intrigued when he discovered a half-buried plaque while visiting Flushing Meadows Corona Park one afternoon. The plaque was dedicated to two bomb-squad detectives who lost their lives on the Fourth of July in 1940 while trying to defuse a time bomb that had been planted in the British Pavillon at the World's Fair.

Since Mauro had never before heard about this foreign act of terrorism on American soil, he decided to research it. The result is a fascinating readable book that documents the 1939 World's Fair -- "The World of Tomorrow" -- in New York just before the outbreak of World War II. Although 1939 found Nazi Germany on the move and the threat of war just over the horizon, America was enjoying a brief time of peace. On opening day, the April morning began sunny and mild, but by early afternoon the weather had turned ugly. Shortly after an opening address by President Franklin Roosevelt, rain began to fall, power outages occurred and bomb threats were made.

The fair promised a glorious vision of the future, complete with wondrous architecture and exhibits representing 62 nations. From April 1939 until it closed in October 1940, 45 million people came to see such innovations as the fax machine, 3-D movies, television and fluorescent lighting, along with GM's popular "Futurama," all staged against the dramatic backdrop and unforgettable symbols of the Trylon and Perisphere, a 700-foot spire and 180-foot diameter sphere at the center of the fairgrounds.

The 1939 Fair's colorful characters -- including Albert Einstein, Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, Parks Commissioner Robert Moses and Fair President Grover Whalen -- are so vividly portrayed, they seem to leap from the page. In 1867 a new settler of the West was born who would recall those times for a new generation in the 20th Century.

California Joe She didn’t know it at the time but Laura Ingalls Wilder would convey the pioneer experience by turning her memories into stories.

She was born near Pepin, Wisconsin. In her childhood she lived in Indian territory in presentday Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota.

In 1878 an illness claimed the sight of her older sister, Mary.

Laura grew up, became a seamstress, and wed Almanzo Wilder in 1885. Their first four years were an emotional roller coaster ride from the birth of their first child until the death of a newborn son in 1889.

They also experienced a succession of crop failures and then a fire that destroyed their home.

The years passed. Laura’s daughter Rose became a staff journalist at the San Francisco Bulletin.

Rose encouraged her mother to write down her memories.

In 1932 “Little House in the Big Woods” was published, followed by “Little House On the Prairie” in 1935. A long series of books followed until 1943. The books were

instant classics.

Laura Ingalls Wilder died in 1957 at the age of 90. In 1974 a long-running televison show based on her books began, “Little House on the Prairie.” It made millions aware of the unique American gift that was the Wilder West.

People are always asking me why I live here. They say I could live in San Francisco, run a boarding house in New York, run a river boat in Seattle or run a brewery in New Orleans. Well, I’ve been here almost 40 years now and another 40 should see me clean out to the end of things pretty well.

Except I need me a hat, a cowboy hat.

I want a Stetson hat. Ever wonder where those came from? John Batterson Stetson (1830-1906) went on a 700-mile walk to the Pike’s Peak gold rush. Along the way he saw tents made from the untanned hides of rabbit, muskrat, coyote and the like. He fashioned an allweather hat out of cloth made from fur. The rest is cowboy history. A bullwhacker rode into their camp, took a fancy to the world’s first Stetson and paid $5 for it.

By the time of his death at 75 his 3,500 workers were producing 2 million hats a year.

Now that’s a hat with some history to it.

Letters to the Courier Dear Kern River Courier, I have lived on the Kern River for over 60 years and it never ceases to amaze me how visitors feel they have the right to leave their trash on its banks! It was bad enough back in “the good old days,” but it is getting to the point where it has become intolerable and really gets my dander up! There isn't much said about this except at the kitchen table, but the time has come to take some action!

How hard is it to put it in a trash can, Dumpster or simply take it home? I am wondering how those who choose to leave an unsafe and unsightly mess here would like it if I went to their yard and dumped all my trash! How about a dirty diaper in the kitchen sink, toilet paper on the couch, plastic bottles in the bedroom, cans and bottles covering up the new carpet, spent fuel containers in the fridge, cigarette butts on the coffee table, fast food containers in the linen closet or a load of dog feces in the bed. Would that be a wake up call to those who abuse this beautiful land?

Ron Bolyard is a retired geologist and has developed an “acute interest” in the geology of the southern Sierra Nevada since he moved here in 1999.

This area is a haven for visitors and the valley welcomes all who come, however the trash that is left and the obvious disrespect for its beauty is totally unacceptable. It is not my responsibility to have to fill a trash bag or two every time I want to go fishing, swimming or just hang out on the river or the lake. Maybe one of these days, I will just follow someone home with their trash and politely dump it in the driveway when they arrive.

If anyone questions my observations, go down to the lake and take a look at what is floating or lodged in the beautiful willows and cottonwoods where the river comes into the lake. Take a walk in one of the campsites after everyone goes home. Try to find a place to enjoy the day or even an hour where there isn't trash strewn about. Or just drive up or down the river and look on the roadsides. It is disgusting to say the least.

Come and enjoy your getaway time…but doggone it…DON'T use it for a dumpsite or a toilet! If you are not willing to PACK IT OUT…then don't PACK IT IN! Barbara Hinkey Kernville

The diagram shows some representative types of fossils that are found in marine environments. The Trilobites occupied the Cambrian seas, 570 MYA, while the others Ron Bolyard are still present in the modern oceans of today in varying forms. The extensive oil, gas, coal, and oilshale deposits that are present in the mid-continent province further proves the marine source of these hydrocarbon fossil fuels and thus supports the notion of the inland seaway in our past.

The drilling for these hydrocarbon resources by explorationists has develop the highly sophisticated science of Paleontology, which is the study of the fossil record through geologic time and the equating and the age dating of fossils found in one area to other worldwide areas of search. Thus armed with this information, the Relative Geologic Time Chart has been developed. This chart has been seen in past articles and is utilized for age-dating rocks and formations globally. Information gathered from the studies using

atomic deterioration data has substantiated the usefulness of the Geological Time Chart to age date the rocks.

MORE ACTIVITIES continued from page 1 and preservation projects underway on site. Silver City Ghost Town is made up of historical buildings from around the area, rescued from destruction. Admission is $4.50 for adults; kids 6 to 12 are $3.50; kids 5 and under are free.

• Another event to check out on Saturday is at the Nuui Cunni Indian Cultural Center at French Gulch (between the towns of Lake Isabella and Wofford Heights.) It will be a fundraising barbecue with low-cost traditional treats like hot dogs, corn on the cob, Indian fry bread and watermelon.

There will be kids’ activities and music, and it’s all from 4 p.m. until the end of the fireworks show. Food is served at 6 p.m.

• Sunday, July 4, our actual Independence Day, has activities to offer as well. Local pastor C. Preston North says, “The 11th Annual Freedom Sunday Celebration will be on July 4 at 11 a.m. at Tank Park in Lake Isabella. We will be celebrating our nation’s freedom and Christian heritage and honoring those who have sacrificed to preserve that freedom.

The main speaker will be Phil Kell, president of the California Baptist Foundation and expert on the U. S. Constitution. All who serve or have served in the military are urged toattend in uniform. An All-American hot dog and apple pie picnic will follow the service. The lunch and activities are free, but donations are accepted to help with the expenses of this event.” He also reminded everyone to bring their own chair.

• In Kernville on Sunday, July 4, Kernville United Methodist Church will be having an ice cream social and patriotic singalong at 7 p.m. Enjoy the music of the Jazz Tones and local children who will play and sing for you.

There is no charge, but donations are accepted. The church is at Sirretta St. and Big Blue Road.

NEW BEGINNINGS Parenting Classes to start NEW BEGINNINGS parenting classes will begin on Thursday, July 15. Classes will be two hours in length, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and will run weekly for 10 weeks. All classes will be held at the KRV Family Resource Center in Lake Isabella (next to NAPA).

Participants will learn about controlling anger, seeking new behavior methods, talking to your children about problems, and how to provide a safe and loving home. Charge is $60 for ten 2-hour classes.

Course is limited to the first seven people to enroll. Weekly parenting classes meet court and CPS requirements.

Prayer meeting set

Fifty years is a jubilee Clarence Semonious, pastor Prince of Peace Lutheran Fellowship, Kernville

This may not be notable news to many, but on June 25, 1960 I became the husband of Darlene Eppler.

June 25, 2010 marked the jubilee year of our wedding.

Leviticus 25:10 says, “And you shall consecrate the 50th year, and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, when each Semonious of you shall return to his property and each of you shall return to his clan.” Modern customs make my jubilee pretty much ineffective in proclaiming personal, civil liberty throughout the land. But the word we translate as jubilee is pronounced “yo·bale” in Hebrew and several commentators explain the significance as a continuous note blown on a ram’s horn.

Since I do not have the support of civil custom, and want the world to know about this jubilee, maybe the Courier will make a sort of “joyful noise” as I thank God for the last 50 years of blessing. As far as the proclaiming liberty throughout the land, there is one with the authority to proclaim liberty throughout the land – and He has. “…you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8. A dear friend gave us a copy of a devotion titled, Write The Name Of The Day, based on Acts 2:1, “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.”

Included in the last line is the question, “…have you had your day of Pentecost?”

A 50-year jubilee, as also Pentecost, is a juxtaposition (a concurrence) of two momentous events. Both recognize the end of a worrisome time and the beginning of a public statement of joy. Public worship is an opportunity to engage in both activities. Just as does marriage, worship will not be satisfying if one’s participation is as a spectator, a judge or a disinclined member. When God spoke to Israel, He began by saying that He was the one who did something for them. At this point you either know of something God has done for you – or you are unaware that He has. Of course, it helps if you haven’t joined the religion of evolution. If you are still reading, it is my joy to share my year of jubilee and declare you liberated from all that would eternally harm you. Yes, you can return to the bondage of where you’ve lived, but why?

Many who have turned their worries over to God have snuck back to retake those worries because they were habit forming. When you worship, look for the joyful. The worriers need your joy, not your attention. Pray intently and repeatedly for God to show you how He has helped you and about what does He want you to make a joyful noise. In His time, He will answer your prayer. Remember you have accumulated a lot to get through.

My travels have taken me to Chicago this week, as I represented Kern County and California to the National Association of Health Underwriters national convention. The trip started out from Long Beach airport Harry Thal on Jet Blue.

Stephanie and I were in row 2.

Typically when on the ground and a pilot makes his announcements, it is from the cockpit. This pilot came out and spoke to the passengers from the front of the cabin. This personal service will make a lasting impression on

us, and I will recommend Jet Blue to anyone who needs to fly on their routes. Later in the flight, we were diverted to Milwaukee due to the temporary closure of O'Hare due to weather. Again, he came out of his cockpit to explain what was happening. The flight crew was equally helpful, and made each passenger comfortable as we sat for three hours on the tarmac.

Great customer service did not begin at the airport. The Holiday Inn at Long Beach airport was staffed with personnel who made us feel as if we were at home. Not that we have a doorman in Kernville, but it felt more like arriving home than in a hotel.

The next morning, the van to the airport continued with the driver going the extra mile.

Not to belabor the point, but the service continued on the ground in Chicago. The staff at the Hotel Blake

greeted us as if we were old friends returning, although we had never been there before.

Each year, insurance companies that participate in the Medicare Part D prescription drug plan are allowed to change the benefits, prices and drugs covered. Most people do not like change and just continue on with the plan of the prior year. Then shortly after January 1, when they get a new bill, find their medicine is no longer covered or that the co-pays have gone through the roof, they have no recourse. The plans can only be changed between November 15 and December 31. So, superior customer service in insurance would be to advise people that they need to review their plan. Offering the review as a free service provides seniors with the opportunity to have a professional review.

So, why is customer service so

important? I would not be a bit surprised if a reader books a flight on Jet Blue, or stays at the Long Beach Holiday Inn. When a person needs health insurance, will they use a broker who you never hear from again, or one who follows up to make sure you keep the best plan, regardless of commissions?

Referrals are the lifeblood of any consumer product, whether it is a flight to Chicago, a night in a hotel or financial protection to cover the cost of health care.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I started treatment for asthma for the first time at age 80. At first I took prednisone and albuterol. Then I had a Pulmicort inhaler. Now I am on Symbicort. The material that comes with this medicine advises that this LABA (long-acting beta agonist) may increase the chance of death from asthma.

Exactly what is this telling me? -E.S. ANSWER: With asthma, there is a sudden constriction of the breathing tubes (bronchi), along with the production of thick mucus. Both block the flow of air into the lungs, and both cause asthma symptoms -- shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing.

Asthma changes are reversible.

Asthma medications come in three major categories. One is quick-action medicines, the kind that get to work fast to open the breathing tubes. Many of these medicines are SABAs, shortacting beta agonists. Albuterol is one example. Beta agonists dilate bronchi.

control. They should be used only for an acute attack, and attacks should be infrequent.

The second category is cortisone drugs, the potent suppressors of inflammation. They calm airways and prevent their constriction. They also decrease mucus production. Taken by mouth, cortisone drugs have unpleasant side effects when used for long periods in high doses. Taken by inhaler, the side effects are few.

Pulmicort is a cortisone-inhaler drug.

The third category of drug is longacting drugs, drugs that keep the airways less twitchy for prolonged periods. Long-acting beta agonists, LABAs, belong in this category. LABA drugs have been noted to increase the risk of serious asthma attacks, which ended in fatalities for a few. That was in the days when they were used alone. Now they have been incorporated into preparations combined with cortisone drugs. Since these dual preparations have come to the market, no drug-related asthma fatalities have been reported. The warning still exists because a LABA is part of the drug.
