Lightning-caused fires have been burning for weeks on the Kern Plateau, causing smoky skies in the Kern River Valley, the Indian Wells Valley and even the San Joaquin Valley. As of Tuesday, the July 8 Lion Fire in the Golden Trout Wilderness on the Kern Plateau had grown to about 3,000 acres. Sequoia National Forest officials say they have met with area air pollution control districts and plan to work with them as they monitor the smoke impacts from the fire. As part of the fundraising efforts for this year’s annual fireworks show sponsored by the Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce, a drawing was held for a vacation at the South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa in Las Vegas. The winner was chosen in that drawing July 13. She is Wanda Drinkard from Weldon. Drinkard bought the ticket from Laura Alford, who sells insurance for Drinkard State Farm. Alford also sold the most tickets for the drawing. Drinkard plans on giving the South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa Getaway to her grandson as a wedding present; he will be getting married this fall. The prize was a two-night, threeday stay at the South Point Hotel, which is located right as you come into the Las Vegas valley from the south. The hotel features suites with 42-inch plasma televisions and Wi-Fi throughout.

There is an awful lot of misinformation and disinformation out there in cyberspace. Here at the Courier, we get bucketloads of forwarded e-mails that turn out, once vetted, to be bogus. For instance, another one that we got says breathlessly that if you

take the last two digits of the year that you were born and add the age you will be this year, the results will be 111 for everyone in the whole wide world! Wow, it’s magic! Actually, it’s not. It’s just basic math. The age you are going to be plus your birth year will always total the current year. Besides, the 111 thing is really not true

Horseshoe club makes pitch Help needed for big tourney Mike Devich Kern River Courier

The Kern River Valley will have 500 horseshoe players and their families here from all over Southern California for next year’s Labor Day weekend, if we pitch in now and start improving the facilities. A few new courts (five or six) are needed at the Lake Isabella Horseshoe Club’s pitching site in the back of Lake Isabella Park (affectionately known locally as Tank Park because of the decommissioned military tank out front.) The improvements must be made or the Southern California meet will not be brought here. Terry Duthridge, president of the Lake Isabella club (which is affiliated with the Southern California Horseshoe Pitching Association), said, “We were able to take it away from Bakersfield (in a recent vote). (But) we gotta have donations or they’re going to give it to someone else.” The area finals have been held every other year in Bakersfield, and Duthridge hopes to bring the estimated 500 players here instead. Duthridge has been trying to work with local motels for lodging for all those people, and has worked out some dry camping arrangements near the courts for those in need of a place to stay. The improvement costs are not huge, but the

Dear Kern River Courier, In the past several years I have enjoyed the Kern River Courier. Even though I live elsewhere, it has provided me with such small town comfort, humor, compassion, and just plain ole info about your community, cast of characters and ongoing events. I have to say, the thing I have missed visually this particular year, however, is the photography of one Murdoc Douglas. I hope to see more of his take on life and events and beautiful scenery that make up the Kern River area. His photos have a particular artistic bent. Otherwise, keep up the good work. Bodfish Bob's Chocolate Gravy Bodfish Bob's Fried Corn with Bacon 6 ears corn, husked and cleaned 6 slices bacon 1/2 large green bell pepper, chopped

Slice corn off of cob and set aside. Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Crumble and set aside. Retain 2 tablespoons of the bacon grease in the pan and fry pepper until just softened. Add the corn and cook until tender. Stir in the crumbled bacon and cook 1 minute more. Bodfish Bob's Creamy Swedish Cucumbers 2 cucumbers large, peeled and sliced 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons red onions chopped

4 tablespoons flour 4 tablespoons cocoa 1 1/2 cups sugar 3 cups milk 1/2 stick butter 1 tablespoon vanilla

In an iron skillet combine flour, cocoa and sugar. Cook over low heat, gradually adding milk and stirring to thicken. Add butter and continue to stir as it melts. Add vanilla and stir. Serve over hot biscuits. Chocolate Gravy is served often at breakfast buffets.

Other smaller fires are still burning on the Plateau as well. The Beach Fire at a half-acre and the Church Fire at six acres are being managed by the Forest Service and are not contained. I’m at the books again. Each year, those of us who work in health insurance sales are required to get a certification to sell Medicare Advantage (aka Medicare Part C) and Prescription Drug Plans (Medicare Part D). The task was made easier a few years ago when a nationally recognized five-part exam was Harry Thal developed. Each insurance company may use this process, or, with approval, create their own training on the rules and regulations concerning the basic information and marketing regulations. (I served on the National Association of Health Underwriters committee that instigated this.) Each company selling a prescription drug plan or a Medicare HMO or PPO must provide training to every agent who sells their products each year. After the training, which can take many hours each, there is again an examination. Some plans require 100% before you are certified for sales. Also, every company must, by law, have a class and examination on Fraud, Waste and Abuse. Much is redundant, but as the internal policies differ between companies, it is a chore. The public should be able to pick the plan that is the best for them, not the one or two plans that an agent

contracts with. Worse are the plans that have in-house agents who go out and discuss their plan's benefits. They only needed to take one company's training. They may know their plan, but is it the best for the consumer? There are many agents who learn one or two plans, or the singular company rep. You as a consumer need to attend many presentations as possible to learn which plan will offer the most coverage for your insurance dollar. Or, seek out an agent who represents a great variety of plans to make sure you are getting the best deal possible. The Medicare annual enrollment period begins Oct. 15 and will run until Dec. 7. In another month you will receive in the mail an annual notice of change. Each company, by law, must send this out. Read it carefully. No matter how happy you are with your current Medicare HMO or PPO or Part D prescription plan, these plans will be different next year. Take the time and read and shop early. In the John Wayne movie “Red River,” played all the time now on Turner Classic Movies, Abilene was where the cowboys and their cattle were headed. Abilene was a town filled with saloons and music, whiskey, gambling and prostitutes. Its California Joe frontier debauchery sustained many a saddle bum. One, in the movie, was John Wayne, who crossed the Red River on the way to Åbilene with 9,000 cows and a need to sell his cattle. How he managed that is the screen story that unfolds before your eyes. Abilene as a cow capital was the brainchild of Illinois stockman Joseph G. McCoy, who decided the business needed a Kansas rather than a Missouri stop. In 1867, he purchased 250 acres near the Kansas Pacific tracks. He built corrals, and then did a little word-of-mouth advertising around Texas. The word spread that Abilene was cowboy-friendly, and by 1870, some 300,000 head had been driven there. (The establishment of a railhead at Ellsworth, 60 miles southwest of Abilene, reduced some of the traffic around

Abilene. Abilene had laws against cattle carrying diseasebearing ticks, and Ellsworth didn’t. In 1872, its first year as a cow town, 100,000 cattle arrived in Ellsworth. There were also eight murders. To deal with that problem, Ellsworth hired a family of celebrity peace officers – the Earp brothers.) Wichita offered a location further south on the Chisolm Trail. Settled briefly by the Osage tribe during the Civil War, the Wichita area was left open to land speculators when the Osage departed in 1867. When the rails hit Wichita, so did the Texas cowboys. In its first year, Wichita shipped 70,000 cattle to the eastern markets. The last of the great cow towns was Caldwell, 50 miles south of Wichita, offering an even shorter trip on the Chisolm Trail. Town promoters hooked into the major railroads with an independent line in 1874. By 1880, after vigorously courting major rail lines, Caldwell snagged the Santa Fe Railroad. For about six years, Caldwell attracted Texas traffic, until the trail drivers had more railroads to choose from in the Lone Star State. See “Red River!” Perhaps the greatest Western ever made!

Five ways to NOT sell your home

Whenever a property is put on the market by a seller it is always with the best intentions of selling. However, that being said there are some things that a seller can do that can really reduce the chances of that sale happening. As my dad says, "Do you want to sell your home, or just have it for sale?" Matt Freeman Here are five "donot's" for sellers. 1: Overprice. This is by far the worst thing you can do as a seller to hamstring the sale of your property. Once a real estate agent could recommend a price and the seller could still sell for 100K over or something. Not so anymore. Get a good real estate agent who is experienced in estimating property value and price aggressively. 2: Underpay. The days of being able to put a listing up for 2% commission and seeing it sell in a week with multiple offers on it are gone. Pay the going commission rate; pay more! Real estate folks work hard, and we don't get a steady paycheck. We only get paid when we sell. So a lot of real estate agents will not even show a home at reduced commission. Don't cost yourself an opportunity to sell your

home to save a buck or two. 3: Keeping clutter. It is important to have a clean, presentable home. We all have a lot of personal stuff; you should see the room where I am writing this article right now! Make sure people can see the house through the stuff. Light and airy is the thought here, wide open spaces in every room. 4: Not picking the right agent. Picking someone with a good reputation is important and a good record of sales. Living in the area a long time is a really important trait as well, as is whether they do this professsion full-time or not. Remember, selling a house is a lot more than just putting a sign in the front yard and a couple of pictures on the MLS. Some agents don't even do that. Get someone who will work hard for you. 5: Spending the money before you have it. Don't! Remember, your home is not valued based on a seller's needs, it is valued based on its value in the market at the time of the sale. An appraiser won't care that a seller needs 400K for their 150K house because they have to move to a place where houses are 400K. Price aggressively based on your needs and desire to sell. After last week’s column where I mentioned that I had spent four years in the Navy standing in lines, I got to thinking about more about those years. I spent an interesting 48 months of naval service. About half that time I was on a destroyer escort (DE), and the secMiddleworth ond half on a submarine. On the DE we spent lots of practice time trying to locate and make practice hits on submarines. Later when I was on a submarine, we spent lots of time locating and making practice hits on destroyers. I got to see it from both angles. My DE, the Edmonds, operated out of Pearl Harbor. It was pretty good duty, and our DE was involved in a number of interesting missions. I remember one operation with a sub called the K1. There wasn't a lot of love lost between us and the K1. In previous exercises we had come out the victor more than they and it didn't sit well with them. This latest mission was for us was to act as a slow moving target for the K1 as they fired one of their new torpedoes which had a new tracking device on it. The torpedo's warhead was replaced with

a non-lethal unit and was rigged to be fired from the sub. When it was about 1,000 yards from our ship, its motor was to shut off and it was supposedly to bob around on top of the water in a big splash of yellow dye. We would locate, secure and tow it back to Pearl Harbor. That day I was operating the sonar. Just as I located the sub, I noticed the torpedo leave the K1 and head toward us. I told the bridge that the K1 had fired its torpedo and it was coming toward us. At 1,000 yards I hurriedly told the bridge that it wasn't slowing down and we were going to be hit. And we were. At about 40 knots it nailed us right in the stern, collecting both propellers, bending the heck out of both shafts and spreading yellow dye over everything.We were dead in the water. I could hear our captain cussing clear down in the Combat Information Center. (I learned some new cuss words that day). Our entire crew thought the K1 did it on purpose, but nothing came of it. The worst part of the repair was trying to remove the big gobs of yellow dye and living down the notoriety of being towed into port. Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.
