2012 London Olympics

‘Ka-yakking’ commentator Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier Eric and Rebecca Giddens have brought us the Kern River Brewing Co., the Olympic Pita, an Olympic silver medal in kayaking and a gold medal for Citra Double IPA from the American Beer Festival in Denver. Tysun McMullan/NBC And now, Eric Special to the Courier Giddens brings us, from accross Eric Giddens the pond, the Summer Olympics from London. This will be Giddens sixth Olympics. He is too far over the hill to be an athlete but he will be announcing the Canoe/Kayak events for NBC. Giddens has previously competed, coached and judged in the Olympics and will be drawing on all of these past experiences to help viewers understand the event and get them excited about the competition. Gidden’s wife, Rebecca, won a silver medal in Kayak Slalom in the 2004 Athens Olympics and was World Champion in 2002. The Whitewater Slalom competition will be held at the Lee Valley Whitewater Centre, nine miles north of Queen Elizabeth Park, the main venue in London. In this competition athletes must negotiate a series of gates through challenging whitewater rapids with their final score being a combination of their running time and any penalties they incur if they touch or incorrectly navigate through a gate. Team USA men’s Kayak athlete Scott Parsons has frequented the Kern River Valley for training and past competitions including the 2005 National Championships hosted at Miracle Hot Springs. Qualifying events at the Olympics will take place on July 29-30 with medal rounds on July 31, August 1 and 2. The competition begins with the men’s people

Kayak and the men’s Canoe Single. Men’s Canoe Double and women’s Kayak take place on July 30, with medal events each day from July 31 to Aug. 2. Randy Moss will do the play-by-play with Giddens serving as the analyst for NBC. The 2012 London Olympics marks the sport’s 20th anniversary as a permanent fixture on the Olympic program. The first Canoe Slalom competition was held in Switzerland in 1932 but was not a permanent part of the Olympic program until Barcelona 1992. This year, 82 competitors will take part; 61 men and 21 women, with each country limited to one boat per event. Once the slalom competition is com-

Lee Valley Whitewater Centre The Lee Valley Whitewater Centre is an international and Olympic standard 300-meter canoe and kayak slalom course. The 300-meter course has a drop of 5.5 meters (18 feet), for an average slope of 1.8 percent (18 m/km or 95 ft/mile) and a pumppowered streamflow of 13 cubic meters per second (460 cubic feet per second). The intermediate/warm-up course is 160 meters long with a drop of 1.6 meters and flow of 10.5 cubic meters per second.

Five local 16- to 17-year-old Kern Valley High School students -- Shasta Christensen, Elisa Munoz, Daniel Szymanski, Destiny Walker and Austin Yunt -- are investing eight weeks of their summer vacation assisting the Forest Service on the Kern River Ranger District. The program’s objectives are to help with necessary conservation work on public land; provide gainful employment of 15to 18-year-olds from diverse backgrounds and to help youth develop a deeper understanding of land management projects and their impacts on the natural environment. “I am always happy to see young folks ready to roll up their sleeves and work hard to achieve rewarding results,” District Ranger Rick Larson said. “I hope they carry this experience with them the rest of their lives, and maybe even consider land management as a future career path. We are very thankful for their participation and hard work.” The Youth Conservation Corps students on the Kern River Ranger District have worked hard on multiple projects and learned a great deal about the Forest Service this year. They performed fuels reduction around the historic Beach Cabin. The group has picked up trash around the Kern Plateau, Greenhorn Mountain, Upper Canyon, Lower Canyon, and Lake Isabella. They have painted signs, bathrooms and picnic tables. At the Blackrock Trailhead, the crew cleaned fire pits, corrals, and campsites, making the site visitor friendly for the season. They performed more noxious weed eradication around Basket Pass and Alder Creek. While performing these services, they also learned about Ecological Restoration and what it means. The crew went on a field trip to the Sequoia National Forest Supervisor’s office in Porterville, where they witnessed forest planning at a Forest Leadership Team meeting. These educational trips are meant to be a learning and growth experience for the students, aimed at provoking thought and discussion, and hopefully sending them out into the world more knowledgeable about the environment.

Things I have noticed...

At the reqest of our readers, the Kern River Courier is publishing responses to the most frequently asked questions of the Corps of Engineers regarding the Isabella Dam safety Modification Study. For additional information see: www.spk.usace.army.mil/missions/civilworks/isabelladam.aspx

Q: A:

How would one describe what encompasses Isabella Dam?

Forty miles northeast of Bakersfield, Calif., and less than one mile from the confluence of the North and South Forks of the Kern River in Kern County, California, the Isabella Dam facility includes a 185-foot rolled earthfill Main Dam across the Kern River, and a 100-foot rolled earthfill Auxiliary Dam across Hot Springs Valley about a half-mile east of the Main Dam.

‘Lorax’ misses the mark By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Lorax” (PG) — The classic tale by Dr. Seuss has been reimagined in 3D, for reasons that have little to do with defending trees from the voracious book industry. The whimsical story of the lonely creature who looked after the environment has become a colorful musical with a host of celebrity voices. Even as a kid, I can never remember going through a Dr. Seuss storybook and yearning for a big-budget, drawn out hyper-color adaptation for the big screen. “The Lorax” has the technical ability to make something pretty to look at, but misses the mark when it comes to making something affecting or memorable. “Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale” (NR) — Don’t let the title fool you; this unrated Taiwanese import (reportedly the most expensive Taiwanese production to date) is a violent tale of rebellion taken from a little-known piece of history. In 1930, the aboriginal Seediq Bale people of Taiwan mounted a revolt against the Japanese occupation. The film offers incredible visuals — the natural landscape is gorgeous, and the battle scenes are jarring and elaborate.

Some viewers may not be able to handle the grim, gut-wrenching scenes that depict the horrors of war or the 2 1/2-hour runtime. DOG OF THE WEEK “Bel Ami” (R) — Petticoats and bodices and silk fans and that guy from “Twilight” — it’s enough to make even the most avid lover of soap-drama gag. Robert Pattinson plays (since he doesn’t really act) a broke veteran who’s landed in 1890s Paris. An old army buddy gives him money to buy a suit, and the next thing you know this pasty dullard is seducing every married woman in town. Somehow, these well-off, intelligent Parisian women just can’t wait to fall into bed with this guy who can scarcely crack a smile or form a sentence. Pattinson isn’t playing a vampire, but he’s just as pale and pretend-broody. Instead of a rakish, manipulative Casanova, the leading ladies have the challenge of falling for a chiseled bar of soap. Robert Pattison in “Bel Ami”

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place potatoes in saucepan with water to cover. Bring to a boil. Cook until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain, and mash until smooth with one teaspoon butter, and milk as desired. Season with salt and pepper. In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat until heated through. Remove from pan. Set aside. Add remaining butter to the skillet, and fry onions over medium heat until tender. Mix gravy mix and water as directed on the package, and add to the skillet with the onions. Simmer, stirring constantly, to form a thick gravy. Pour half of the gravy into a square casserole bottom. Place sausages in a layer over the gravy then top with mashed potatoes. Bake uncovered for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, until brown.

Courier Antler, Fin & Feather Report

Bass ambush For the most part, people who know me know that fishing for crappie is my preference. So when I say I catch more bass by accident than on purpose, it’s Mencarini the truth. The last few days are evidence of this and I have done nothing different as far as my fishing technique. Lately every time I try to land a crappie I get ambushed by some very large bass. Saturday morning was a perfect example. My first six crappie were mauled by “Ole Bucket Mouth.” But don’t worry. The score at the end of the day was bass 6, unlucky me 0. My reels are loaded with 4-lb. test line and these bass were at least 7pounders. And one of them even

tipped the scale in the double digits. Needless to say I had fun but I was left frustrated and out of red and white jigs. I had much better luck landing nice catfish on a night time trip to the French Gulch Marina area. Those two kitties weigh-in at 18 lbs. total. The catfish bite seemed to get going around 10 p.m. and lasted until midnight. I didn’t get a lot of bites but made good of the ones I got. Here is a hint: use smaller pieces of bait. The cats tend to nibble on bigger pieces and tend to gobble up the smaller ones. Don’t let the low lake level discourage you from fishing. Fish still have to eat and they all don’t eat at the same time. Dry lines don’t catch fish. Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and a avid fisherman. For questions or comments you can reach him through the Kern River Courier, office@kern rivercourier.com.

Do you love Jesus? Jack Duitsman, Pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me . . . ‘John 21:15a If I could point to one part of the Duitsman Christian walk that consistently gives me reason for pause, it would be the great white throne of judgment described in the book of Revelation. Standing alone before God with eternity hanging in the balance somehow undoes all my well-polished faith, and if I ponder the scenario long enough, I am left a quivering heap of uncertainty. The omniscience of the Eternal God, who at His very core is holiness, somehow doesn’t seem consistent with the ultimate welcome into His heavenly kingdom of one such as me. The scenario that unfolds around the above passage is well known to us, and by way of a memory jog, is Peter’s face-to-face meeting with the risen Jesus following his monumental denial of the Savior a few days previous. As egregious a sinful response as any contained in the pages of

Scripture, Peter’s four-letter-laced exclamation that culminated a triple denial of even knowing Jesus of Nazareth must have been fresh on his mind when met by Jesus. This passage should not only be familiar to us through its being oft told in the Church, but in its déjà vu like quality that reminds us of our own shortcomings where this walk of faith is concerned. The reason the first paragraph is so unsettling in its reality has much to do with what you and I consider to be the inadequacy of our own faith, and our abject inability to do anything about it. Like Peter, we have the best of intentions that are much more often than not steamrolled by the realities of our personal sinfulness. Yet in this meeting between the Savior and His dear disciple comes nothing of an angry, judgmental, or you-let-me-down response, for Jesus’ invitation was a simple offer to sit and have breakfast together. Imagine that! An honest and self examining look at how the grace of the Lord dealt with a less than perfect disciple (sounds much like me, and perhaps you too), can draw us into an embracing understanding of the love of Jesus for us in spite of our sinful propensities. The invitation to experience holiness in our own lives should never be confused with the grace that wraps us in the eternal love of the Father given through His Son Jesus.

Talking About Real Estate

Have we hit the bottom? Matt Freeman Kern River Courier Columnist

An interesting economic report came out this week concerning real estate sales nationally. It said the nation’s residential real estate has ticked up in value by 0.3 percent; the Freeman first time since 2007. Sounds like good news but the report is based on national averages, taking into account all real estate markets, those that are currently up and those that are still depressed. In the short term it doesn’t affect our Valley, but long term, if the numbers keep looking good, we should start to see market stability in our area as well. Our local market is in flux right now, with some market segments doing better than others. So far this year, as a whole, sales are slightly better than last year for us. In a quick market breakdown for the Valley, Kernville real estate has seen somewhat of a rebound with the number of sales down compared to a couple of years ago, but the average price of each sale has increased. Inventory is still up so the typical Kernville listing is still sitting on the market for 8-12 months. Wofford Heights has seen a slight rebound in stick-built home sales but manufactured and mobile home sales remain depressed, which is true for the whole Valley. As always happens in Wofford Heights, properties that

have good views sell first. Lake Isabella and Bodfish are both experiencing a bit of a bump in the volume of sales, but there’s been no price appreciation yet this year. Currently stick built homes less than $100K, in good condition, are moving the quickest, followed by manufactured homes and then vacant land and lots. Average time on market for vacant land and lots is 12-18 months and most of those listings have multiple price reductions before they are finally sold. Squirrel Valley has held its values pretty well but has yet to see an average property value appreciation. Weldon and Onyx remain depressed and are the slowest selling zip codes in the area with average marketing time for most listings being close to a year. The predominance of manufactured and mobile home housing as well as flood zones in Weldon and Onyx are also factors to consider when looking as sales trends for those areas because lender guidelines on manu housing and homes in flood prone areas are very strict if loans are even available at all. So the news is mixed. It usually takes some time for national trends to hit the Valley. But stay tuned. Bakersfield currently is experiencing a shortage of inventory so prices are going up, and the Ridgecrest market is relatively healthy right now in certain areas. Hopefully these trends will continue and come up on the canyon! Matt Freeman is a Realtor with Freeman’s Lakeside Realty (760) 3795915 or cell 223-0880. His column is not intended to replace legal advice.
